Patriots released Corey Dillon.

The veteran joins a crowded free agent market at running back. The 10-year veteran could be a fine short-yarage back for a team like the Jets or Ravens, but he may see himself as a starter. Dillon leaves New England with the franchise record for yards in a season with 1,635 in 2004.

They drafted Maroney in the 1st for the sole purpose of replacing Dillon, and he's done nothing to disappoint. Any addition will be mere depth.

IMO they might add another back in the 4th/5th round for depth, but that's about it.

They drafted Maroney in the 1st for the sole purpose of replacing Dillon, and he's done nothing to disappoint. Any addition will be mere depth.

That's not how the Pats operate. They are never afraid to add players at any position (well, outside of QB) regardless of who they currently have if they think they can help. If there's a RB available they feel can help them they will add him. They will not simply sit tight.Now, who they bring in is open for debate. Yet, with Faulk aging and getting injured two years in a row and Maroney not yet proven as far as being a 16 game/20 carry back I would not be surprised at all if they add a RB that's much more than a depth guy.

thats how pretty much every team operates, it just a matter of it working out. No matter who they bring in he won't know the system like dillon did and he probably won't be as good as dillon was, so that helps Maroneys ff value imo.

Dillon's best year was his first year...when he didn't know the system. Same with Antowain Smith.I'm a big Maroney fan. I own him in my keeper league. Yet, I think it's premature to put a value on him until you see who the Pats add. A similar scenario was a few years ago when the Pats had both Graham and Fauria but still used a #1 on Watson out of the blue. I'm not saying this will happen at RB but you just never know what this franchise will do and until I see who they add at RB I'm not willing to commit to Maroney's value.

 
Any chance the Pat's re-sign Dillon (with a substantially reduced salary) before TC opens? I'm sure he wants to test the market, but he might not get offers as high as he hopes. IIRC, he was scheduled for a big salary with NE next season. And it's seemed like he and BB have had a good relationship. It certainly would be easier to re-sign Dillon to spell Maroney rather than bringing in a new RB -- if he doesn't get a big offer and they can negotiate a salary.

Dillon strikes me as the type that has too much pride for that.

IIRC, Dillon cancelled the trip to Buffalo saying that he didn't think the situation was right for him.

Whether he actually cancelled it, or Buffalo lined up A-Train already, I don't know. But that was the story.

Dillon is going to wait until a "good" opp arises and not before. he will likely not sign befor ethe June 1st cuts, and even then he will want to look at teams that could be SB contenders with him on their team. I personally think Dillon should be talking to the Dallas Cowboys. Let him get 10-12 carries a game there and he would be perfect if they trade JJ away and go with MB III as their feature back.

If the best he can get is 10 carries a game he will revisit that after he's exhausted any chance of getting a bigger workload. I DO NOT think winning is the motivating factor for him at the moment.

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but Dillon said publically that he wanted to go to a team on the cusp of the championship. Thus his "decision" not to go to Buffalo. Do I believe that he is willing to let himself be a complimentary RB on a championship caliber team -- NO! He had that in New England and wanted out. He wants to be the main RB AND he wants to make $$$$$.THe only teams left that has such an opening is Tennessee and Green Bay:As for GB , (1) Dillon does not seem to be the type of RB that fits their system, and (2) that assumes that he could be the clear #1 in GB - which at this point in his career, I am not so sure about.As for Tennessee, Dillon is not a compliment to White. THey need more of an outside runner. And, I am not sure that they want to put White behind Dillon, but maybe. Still, the Titans probably would prefer a more complimentary back like Brown for a cheaper price.

I think he is already in the HoF David...11,000+ rushing yds, 13,000 total yds...89TD so far, SB ring...he's in IMO. He needs about 1,000 yds rushing to move into the top10 and pass John Riggins, THurman THomas, Franco Harris, Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk and perhaps Jim Brown.You might be right though David, its a good point. I only see a couple of teams that need a starter and I think those players will be addressed in the draft...he can sign somewhere and get all the goal line TD...he is at 16th on that list presently...10 more moves him into top10 on that list too. Maybe you're right.

IMO, Dillon's resume pales in comparison to many of his contemporaries. We've gone over this in many other threads, but I suspect that Dillon may not even be in the Top 10 RBs from his generation. I do not think that the HOF voters will induct that many RBs from the same timeframe. Dillon's career totals are on par (in some cases bettter than) Bettis' at the same point in their careers. I use Bettis as a barometer as many feel that Bettis is a lead pipe lock for the HOF. However, Bettis has more All Pro and Pro Bowl selections that Dillon does not have. Dillon has been a regular Top 10 RB but infrequent Top 5 RB statistically. At this point I suspect his HOF candidacy would fall short if he retired today. As many others have mentioned, if he played on another team the first 7 years of his career he might be a lock instead of a borderline candidate.
