Kyle Brady to sign two-year deal with PatriotsTight end critical of Jaguars' decision not to sign him; he played eight seasons in Jacksonville.By GENE FRENETTE, The Times-UnionAfter being asked to take a salary cut by the Jaguars, it didn’t take long for tight end Kyle Brady to find the payday or the Super Bowl contender that he was looking for on the free-agent market.Brady came to terms on Friday night with the New England Patriots on a two-year contract worth $5.3 million, including a $2 million signing bonus that was worth more than the 2007 salary that his old team had offered. On the first day of the NFL free agency period, Brady flew up to New England, passed his physical and reached an agreement on a contract after terms were discussed earlier in the day with his agent, Michael Clouser. It brings to a close Brady’s eight-year run in Jacksonville, the third-longest among current Jaguars behind only Fred Taylor and Donovin Darius.“My whole thing was to go out and find a team that wanted me and would show that by the contract they were offering,” Brady said in a phone interview from a Boston restaurant. “Plus, a team that’s within reach of a Super Bowl, and this one always seems to be among the AFC elite.“I wasn’t looking to ascend the salary ladder, but you never know what the market is going to bear.”Under his new contract, Brady will earn a $1.2 base salary and $100,000 roster bonus in 2007 on top of his signing bonus. In 2008, which could be Brady’s final NFL season, his base salary goes up to $2 million.Brady, 35, was miffed that the Jaguars, whose blocking skills were lauded by coach Jack Del Rio, only offered him a $1.5 million contract with no signing bonus for the upcoming season. Last year, he made a base salary of $2.1 million and earned another $400,000 in incentives.“That was frustrating, and so was all the [contract] restructuring each year and the feeling I had to keep lowering my [salary] numbers,” Brady said. “This is satisfying to go to a team that really values me.”Brady, who missed just five games over the last years and made 110 starts, saw his role as a pass-catcher diminish severely in four seasons under Del Rio. He caught only 66 passes for 578 yards and three touchdowns, compared to 175 receptions for 2,022 yards and 10 TDs from 1999-2002 under coach Tom Coughlin.“My role in the offense changed completely the last four years and I didn’t feel it had to be that way,” Brady said. “The Jaguars had me pigeonholed where all I was was a blocking tight end. It was frustrating because I had worked so hard to prove I could be effective catching the ball.“I would have loved to end my career in Jacksonville, but I don’t think I was given a serious thought as a complete tight end. When they asked me to take a pay cut, that made my decision [to go into free agency] pretty simple.”Brady, a first-round draft pick of the New York Jets in 1995, is reunited with head coach Bill Belichick, who served as the Jets defensive coordinator during Brady’s final two seasons in New York. The Patriots, who play a lot of two tight-end sets, were eager to lock up Brady after Daniel Graham elected to become a free agent. New England’s primary tight end, Ben Watson, is a prolific pass-catcher and Brady remains uncertain how much his role will change with the Patriots. He’s happy to make what appears to be his final NFL stop with a franchise that has won three of the last six Super Bowls, and narrowly lost 38-34 to the Indianapolis Colts in the recent AFC championship game.“You can’t get a better combination of stability in terms of the quarterback [Tom Brady] and the head coach [belichick],” Brady said.
Still not sure why the Pats dumped a boatload of money on a guy who has stone hands, rarely gets YAC when he does catch but can block like a lineman. Are there o-line issues that I am not aware of in Foxborough?

I think you answered you own question. He is one of the best blocking TE's in the NFL.The Patriots O-Line is solid. But now with a RB who has more speed, opening the offense and running laterallywill require an outside blocking scheme and the TE could be a big part of this overall scheme. This signing tells me thatthey may not be running brtween the tacklesas much as they used to.just my

3.3 and 2.0 million is a bucket load now  isn't that like 3% of the salary cap of the team for a vet with solid blocking skills and decent knowledge of the rest of the NFL. They've got the other TE's locked up for a couple years...

I agree it's more money than I would have expected for KB,but we all know that SP and BB always go after players thatfit the system. I think this is another one of those tough playersthat will buy into the Belichick system 110%.

Dont bank on it. I love with Brady brings to the table but keep in mind he is almost 36, has some injury concerns and cannot be relied upon to make catches. I realize that wont be is primary role in the offense but all Im trying to say is that, generally speaking, you just dont pay that much for a one-way guy like he is. Perhaps the Pats have the cap room but their FO's decision to pay Brady more in a Signing Bonus than the Jaguars offered as a base salary seems like a blunder. Might just be a nitpick here or perhaps a gripe- the way that Brady trashed the Jaguars after 8 years seems a bit immature. Hes got to realize he just cannot be a featured TE anymore.Dont let the door hit you on the way out, Kyle. :excited:

Disgruntled Jags fans views aside...

I like this signing. My big concern with losing Graham was that none of the TEs on the roster could replace him in his role as a blocker. Brady is basically a 3rd tackle at this point in his career, and he'll compliment Watson and David Thomas's pass catching ability nicely.

 Watch out for Dave Thomas this year. He may see an increased role in the New England offense. :lmao:

Decent signing, but it will be really stupid/weird seeing Tom Brady be forced to put

"T. Brady" on the back of his jersey.

This adds 200 yards to my projections for the New England running game
Now the question is,"Who do the Patriots sign to replace Dillon ?"
One player the Boston Globe cited today that the Pats are looking at is Sammy Morris.

The Patriots O-Line is solid.

But now with a RB who has more speed,

opening the offense and running laterally

will require an outside blocking scheme

and the TE could be a big part of this overall scheme.

This signing tells me that

they may not be running brtween the tackles

as much as they used to.

just my :banned:
The key to Daniel Grahams role as a blocker was not on the outside to get the edge. The blocking TE in the Pats scheme is essential to their "WHAM" block which is a trap between the tackles. The Pats love this play and I see them continuing to feature it with Brady blocking. Also, Brady will be an asset pass blocking against some of the better pass rushers that the Patriots face.

Won't happen...there is only one real Brady on the team. They will add the K on Kyle's though. The Pats needed a Blocking TE, and they got one. It is a two year contract and he is done. Sounds like the right kind of deal for the Patriots.

I believe it may be league rule, not a team rule.

As I said in Pats thread, radio by me has them chatting with Fauria.

Might wind up being a tryout for who gets to play and who has to retire.

That's not a boatload of money. The Pats use two TE's extensively, and just lost their blocking guy, who will sign for something in the neighborhood of 5 mill per year. They can get the same blocking, an occasional catch, for half the money, and only commit for 2 years.

Just wait till T. Brady finds out that K. Brady is making more money than him.

I'm kidding, but there is a serious point here. Brady's contract is below market value because of his commitment to the team. That's OK if he's taking a hit so the team can pay other superstars. I suggest it might not be so OK for him if they're paying $$$ for backups.

Really a low risk signing. It's not like they signed him to a 5 year deal. Small signing bonus, and he is one of the best blocking tight ends in the game. This was a nice signing to replace Graham.

someone who is going to block to save Tom from being planted on the ground...I don't think he will complain too much about it! :bag:
