Report: Pats, ex-Dolphin Morris agree to deal

The Patriots have reportedly reached agreement on a contract with former Dolphins running back Sammy Morris.

The Pats, active as ever, have in Morris a versatile vet who should help keep pressure off Laurence Maroney but not necessarily take goal-line carries. Morris averaged a sound 4.3 yards-per-carry after coming off suspension last season and caught 21 passes. Terms of the deal aren't yet known. Mar. 3 - 2:04 pm et

Dillon has already been released.

IMO, this is the best kind of signing for Maroney owners since Morris can spell him, but likely won't take significant touches.

I agree. I'm a Maroney owner and this is exactly the kind of signing I was hoping for.

Sammy Morris is a very good backup RB. He will be able to do the job in case Maroney gets hurt or needs a breather.

Maroney is a big-time #1 now.

Maroney, Morris, Faulk and Evans is a fairly well rounded group. Add a young guy in the draft and your RB group is complete.

I would just like to see NE upgrade their OL now. I have Maroney but the running game was too inconsistent last year. If they don't get better up front then I'd rather have another RB.

He played better than I expected last year.

BEFORE that I'd have him pegged for Faulk's replacement so I like the versatility he brings.

Morris is a guy they tried to land a few years ago. They like the fact he's versatile and can help on special teams. I look at him more as an upgrade over Patrick Pass than a replacement for Dillon although he definetly helps in that area. I still think the Pats bring in another RB and that will be the one that ultimately will dictate Maroney's value. Right now my guess is it's a 3-5 round draft pick and if that's the case Maroney owners can probably breathe a sigh of relief.

A RB that is drafted in rd 3-5 will be behind Sammy on the depth chart. He's a decent backup.

Sammy Morris is a guy I've followed a bit since his rookie season. Never a world beater, always a guy that would go in a give his utmost.

Seems like a Patriots kind of guy. I agree he is a Patrick Pass kind of guy rather than a Kevin Faulk kind of guy.

When he signs with the Jets next he'll have completed playing for all of the AFC East

I think the Pats will try to find the replacement to Kevin Faulk this year in the draft.

Interesting, I never think of the Pats O line as anything but good?

Top of the league in pass-blocking; mediocre in run-blocking.(just opinion; not stats based).
Here are the team's rushing ranking the past 6 years (basically since they started winning).Attempts, rushing yards, ypc, rushing TD06 6, 12, 18, 405 18, 24, 30, 1104 5, 7, 18, 1003 12, 27, 30, 2402 28, 28, 27, 2601 8, 13, 24, 7Those are not ground breaking numbers. Normally when a team ranks a lot higher in attempts than in the other categories that means the production is not where it should be. Other than the year Dillon went nuts, IMO the Pats ground game has been pretty average.
