Banta_Cain to the 49ers? (1 Viewer)

Looks like it's almost a done deal. With that they have really improved their defense in the last week. Plus lots of draft picks, I could see them making some real strides.

That being said, I haven't seen anything from alex smith to make me believe he will be their qb in two years time.

Niners free agency update for Tuesday

Niners free-agency quick-hitters

(I'll put updates on here, so check back throughout the day)

Tully Banta-Cain's agent, Jim Sims, was getting ready to leave his Oakland office at 9:30 a.m. to make the drive to Santa Clara with the intent of finalizing the contract for his client.

"I'm heading down there right now," Sims said. "So that's a pretty good sign if I'm heading down there, right?"

He was supposed to visit the Steelers tomorrow. Why would he sign without even talking to another team that's interested?

'Cause he doesn't want to play there? Because 'they made him an offer he couldn't refuse'? Because he played for Cal and wants to go back to the West coast? Pick one.

Edit:

lol @ silvergold and I channeling Brando at nearly the same time.

I think smith made some tiny strides, but I just don't see it in him. You know how with rookie qb's (and he wasn't a rookie) you see flashes of brilliance. I just never thought I saw that from him and I'm a 49ers homer who watched every game. I think, if he's lucky, he'll turn into a trent dilfer. For a guy who's most outstanding quality was supposed to be his intelligence, I watched him make a ton of stupid decisions.

Granted he hasn't wowed me, but you didn't see flashes in the second half at Seattle in the monsoon?

Schefter reported their interest back in February:

Feb. 27 - NFL Network's Adam Schefter believes the 49ers will be in the market for free agents Tully Banta-Cain and Nate Clements.Coach Mike Nolan considers linebacker one of his team's best positions, but the Niners need another 3-4 OLB to play opposite Manny Lawson. Clements could pull in the top price tag on the free agent market.
BTW - He just signed in SF.

I'll give you a little there, but that was more his feet than anything. I mean I haven't seen him, in dire straits, step up and make that laser throw, or that perfect deep ball etc....

That seattle game he was able to hang in there, running around in the pocket and such and letting the defense break down. That's a great ability to have, but michael vick has loads of that and that isn't getting him anywhere. Plus that is one game out of 16. I would hope for more than that from a #1 pick in his second year. In my books Leinart, Cutler, Vince Young all played better than he did.

The key with Tully is that he's used correctly. He's a very solid pass rusher but he's limited in other areas. He's not a three down player. In a best case scenario he's the first OLB off the bench who can also help out at DE in 4-3 alignments. If San Fran signed him thinking he'll be a legit starter that maybe asking too much. If they signed him to be part of a rotation he'll be a solid fit who will be effective.

Nice pick-up by San Fran. TBC was a real fan favorite here in New England, we're going to miss him. He's a really nice for the 3-4 San Fran is running.

I would predict he is the new starting olb opposite manny lawson. The 49ers will probably bring in another lb in the draft but he may take time to develop.

Meh, he's going to really struggle to hold up in run support and coverage on the strong side of the 3-4. Situational guy at best. Really exposed in extended time late last season, so much so that the Pats moved Vrabel back outside and brought in Eric Alexander at ILB.

thank god, the voice of reason. This really is a MEH signing. he's stop gap at best.

Bingo! When you have 5-6 players trying to keep Wilfork, Warren, Seymour and Green off the QB, the lucky LB who is left uncovered is going to get some sacks. I am glad for TBC - hope he got some good $$, he worked hard for it.

SF is desperately lacking a pass rush. Our defensive line does jack, so we need that boost from our LB core. Banta-Cain is probably signing up for this reason. We not only have a bigtime need for depth at LB, but Banta-Cain is guaranteed to get onto the field for a lot of snaps even if he doesn't start just for pass rushing ability.
