Kelley Washington (1 Viewer)

I just turned on the radio and I think I heard that he signed with the Patriots, 5 years. I may have heard it wrong. Was anyone listening to NFL radio a minute ago? not that this makes huge news, FF or otherwise....

I remember hearing about this a few weeks ago. Another guy I was keeping my eye on when he was in Cinci. Never really panned out for him. It will be fun to see him do something in NE but I doubt it will be much.

The Patriots and free agent WR Kelley Washington have reached agreement on a five-year contract, his agent told the Boston Globe.

Washington would add size to New England's receiving corps and could become a fantasy factor as a red-zone target. This will make it tougher for Jabar Gaffney to make the club in 2007, and it seems like the Patriots are not planning on having Chad Jackson (knee) healthy by the season. Mar. 12 - 2:21 pm et

Washington agrees

The Patriots and receiver Kelley Washington have agreed to terms on a contract today, Washington's agent confirmed in an email.

Washington's agent, Chad Speck, Founder/President of Football Operations of Allegiant Management, LLC, noted the deal is for five years.

Speck included a comment from Washington in confirming the deal via email: “I happy to be a part of such a great franchise and to have the opportunity to help them get back and win another Super Bowl. The privilege to play with arguably, one of the best quarterbacks of all time, Tom Brady, and to be coached by someone like Bill Belichick is a blessing. I am very excited about contributing to the New England Patriots."

I don't understand why the Patriots are trying so hard to replace Jabar Gaffney. He was awesome in the playoffs, and was finally getting used to the system/gaining Brady's trust. This is dumb :lmao:

Didn't hear, but he was talking to NE, MIA and TEN last week.

So who is getting the short end in New England?

They have a huge number of WRs right now.

Caldwell, Gaffney, Brown, Stallworth, Washington, Jackson... I know I'm forgetting some....

Thanks man :lmao:

First stallworth and now this, the pats must love talented, injury prone wrs. But that combo would be scary if they can both stay on the field

Brown is a free agent and may or may not be back (or may retire) and Jackson is not expected to be healed up by the start of the season. That leaves . . .StallworthCaldwellWelkerWashingtonGaffneyJackson (injured)

Oh, OK. How many did they go with on their active roster last year?NFL radio just clarified they agreed to terms, not signed.....

Welker. But Brown may retire. Plus Jackson, and now Washington, have injury concerns (to say the least). Gaffney will probably not be back. Welker is a third wr/kr. Caldwell is better suited as the second wr.

Just thinking out loud here, but I could see Caldwell being a candidate for maybe being a cut either soon or June 1.

Im not quite sure how much $ he counts against the cap, but he made a number of vital errors in the playoffs that may have costed them in the long run, so he may have either soured Belichick, Brady, or management with his poor performance...

Anyone else think of this possibility.

It looks like Brown will probably retire and Jackson may not play this year after tearing his ACL in the AFC Championship game. That explains the move to sign/trade for Welker and get Stallworth.Washington is a buy low reclamation project as I see it.. He showed flashes early in his career and he obviously has the size/speed thing going for him, but he never panned out and ultimately Houshmandzadeh passed him on the depth chart and never looked back. Maybe he does something on the Bengals. At the very least, he's an upgrade as the team's #4 WR assuming the pecking order looks something like this:Stallworth, Caldwell, Welker (slot/#3/KR/PR - Brown replacement), Gaffney/Stallworth..When Jackson returns to health, it's all gravy.

What these moves say to me is that the Patriots are not going to use the draft to fill needs. They will use the draft to take BPA.

And for that, I'm really excited.

I bet someone would end up being cut, but from other folks here, it may not happen. Does anyone have the contract #s of the current WR group?

He's due $1.55 million in base salary in 07. His total cap hit is scheduled to be around $1.87 million.

For BostonFred or other Patriots homers.. Is Bam Childress still on the team? He's another young kid with some potential that the coaches liked during the preseason. He may not stick, but he's good for training camp fodder at least. A couple other guys who have been on/off the team are Matt Shelton and Kelvin Kight. I'm not 100% sure if they're still on the roster now or not (I have them listed on their DC until I confirm either way).

2007 PROJECTED SALARY CAP INFO:Stallworth $2.77 million

Caldwell $1.87 million

Welker $1.7 million

Jackson $913,000

Gaffney $751,000

Plus whatever Washington's numbers are.

This is just a ploy to motivate Donte Stallworth.

Seriously, I don't think Gaffney's necessarily going anywhere. That's just speculation at this point. The real questions are whether Brown will retire and Jackson will be placed on IR after injuring his ACL in the AFC championship game. I haven't heard anything definitive on Brown, but the Welker signing sure seems like an attempt to replace him or at least groom a replacement for him and minimize the pounding Brown takes on special teams and going over the middle. I haven't heard anything suggesting Jackson will go on IR, either, but signing another WR sure seems like they're keeping that option open and may pursue it. Signing quality depth across the board like this should mean lots of competition at the position, which should be good, and should motivate Stallworth to not just play well enough to start but to get the incentives in his contract and get a big payday, and motivate Jackson to rehab or risk losing his job, too.

To me, it reads that they will go defense with those two first rounders. Probably a LB and a S/CB or some combo of two of those...

I believe he is still under contract through 2007 although he does not count against the cap because he is not one of their 53 regular roster players.

Another thing on this too is that Stallworth's contract calls for a big payday next year. Something along the lines of 8mil to keep him. The Pats could be covering their bases here in case they don't want to keep Stallworth. If they don't, in '09, they would have Washington, Jackson, and Welker as the base three. Not too bad..

Belichick has been interviewed over the years and has indicated that he believes that investing a first round pick in a LB for their system is not generally a great investment based on the fact that they need to groom someone. He's also said that they can find someone with the tools in later rounds and that they would be better served looking at established free agents than drafting someone to try to mold into their system. That was his feelings in the past, not sure if they still feel that way now.

I don't think they're looking to cut him, but I think they realized he wasn't enough. He's going to go into training camp fighting for a job just like everyone else, though, so it's entirely possible he'd be the odd man out.

Bam is a hard worker but he's not that talented. The Pats love guys like that, but I think that saying he has potential is pretty optimistic. I haven't heard anything about him getting cut at this point, but if I had to guess I'd bet he's on the practice squad this year.

I'm surprised he didn't go to Atlanta. Hugh JJackson was his position coach in Cinci and is now the offensive Coordinator for the Falcons. Just seemed like a perfect spot for Washington to get his chance at staring.

Hope he likes to block because Maroney will be coming around the outside looking for a downfield...

I really like Washington, he was stuck behind some pretty talented guys in Cincy.
His talent is no-doubt NFL starter caliber. But he's an extreme knucklehead. Even guys like Chad Johnson thought Kelly Washington was too much of a :bag: "Leon". He's a few wrenches shy of a full toolbox. I never underestimate a change of scenery, but Kelly Washington is one weird bird.

Ohh... I did not know that, thanks

Didn't Stallworth, and Washington have some sort of beef at the end of thier days at U of Tennessee?? Kinda ironic that they'd sign on the same team now. I thought it was something along the lines of them both coming out early for the draft, and then Stallworth IIRC changed his mind, and went back to school. Washington got mad. Not sure. Anyone else remember that??

IIRC, Kelley Washington convinced Donte Stallworth to come out early on a dare, and then Washington went back to Tennessee.

I don't think Gaffney will get whacked, although this may signal retirement for Troy Brown.

 :lmao: Man, its daily with the Pats. I'm going to have to run down the roster to see how many open positions they actually have. Is Hartwell tomorrow or Wednesday? This has been a very busy and fun offseason for Pats fans.

Stallworth and Washington were both guys that the Dolphins were trying to sign. Looks like the rivalry exists even off the field. Wonder if BB would have chased these guys if Saban was still in South Florida?

I hope its him too...

From KFFL:

Patriots | K. Washington signedMon, 12 Mar 2007 11:39:48 -0800Len Pasquarelli, of ESPN.com, reports the New England Patriots have signed WR Kelley Washington (Bengals). The contract can be for as short as one year and as long as five. It includes a signing bonus of $300,000 and can be worth $22 million if the team keeps him for the full term of the deal. If the Patriots wish to keep Washington beyond 2007, they'll have to pay him an option payment, believed to be $4 million.

I agree, Hank.

Stallworth then Washington, guess getting high character guys isn't part of NE's game plan anymore.
Is Stallworth low character? I thought he was well received in Philly. Has he been arrested? He's in the substance abuse program but it is not clear for what.I know Washington is an ex Bengal but what is his crime? Has he been arrested too?

So what if Stallworth likes to smoke a little crack cocaineevery now and then, it doesn't make him a bad guy.
