ESPN " The Huddle" good recap from 3-17-07 (1 Viewer)

I cannot listen and would appreciate any of the comments posted ....
some comments from Clayton on the Huddle:rumors: Az Cardinals looking at possibly picking ADPLions hoping to flip picks (plus some other considerations) with Cleveland so they can choose B Quinn.

Clayton:'doubts' the Moss to GB deal will work out. GB is only willing to give up a 3rd or 4th round pick, Oakland doesn't really want Aaron Rodgers. Taking 3-4 roudn pick for Moss would mean Oakland admitting they were wrong about getting him in the first place.

more Clayton:GB's rb's are up in the air. Maybe Morency could take the lead spot. Herron's really just a backup. No guarantee that M Lynch will be there for them in the 1st round (Buffalo may take him).

thank you for the updates ... keep 'em coming
Todd McShay:Thought that the J Russell pro day workout was the best QB performance he's ever seen (10 years of scouting). Clayton:Other scouts have said Russell's throwing was awesome...compared to Elway and Favre re: arm strength, fitting the ball in tight spots, accuracy.McShay:On Russell the person: very laid-back, but at the same time poised. The right coaching will be able to turn perceived negatives into positives.

thank you for the updates ... keep 'em coming
McShay on Pro Days:engineered to make every player look good; pro day results are often used to confirm what was seen at the Combine. Pro Days help the lesser-known players (2nd string and/or non-invitees to the Combine) get noticed.

Clayton:

Indy has to hold on to what little cap $$$ they have available for later dealings with Freeney and Sanders.

L Briggs says he's 'not a malcontent'

Clayton agrees. Also says that Briggs will play for Chicago this year. His threat to hold out is strategy that won't work.

Briggs says he is the 'CEO of Lance Briggs'.

Clayton reminds everyone that Briggs turned down contract last year and was told that he'd probably be franchised next year (2007).

Clayton:

weak side linebackers are readily available in drafts, so that doesn't help Briggs position.

Also why Cato June took so long to sign (and he probably will end playing SS LB)

John Clayton and Jeff Dickerson on now talking FB.

Next hour Thomas Shay (sp?) on the draft.

Then click on listen. Right after the speaker symbol.
I think you are talking about Todd McShay, ESPN's lead scout. Judging by his other appearances this week, I am sure he will be talking about Russell's pro day workout. Thanks for the updates. Very helpful! :lmao:
Yea. My hearing ain't that great. Then again today is St. Pattys Day, so doesn't everyone in the media add an O or Mc to their names?

Four Downs:

1st Down:

Will Pacman play for Titans?

Clayton: No, will probably be suspended for the year. 10 incidents will mean no play for Pacman. Will help set precedent for future player off-field issues. He can't be cut per CBA.

[the ESPN host calls Pacman a 'magnet for trouble' but magnet comes out sounding like 'maggot'! lost my soda across the room on that one]

2nd Down:

What is biggest impact signing for NE?

Clayton:

New England's acquisition of A Thomas best signing of the offseason, and will make the biggest impact in NE.

Host disagrees, says D Stallworth is the bigger impact. Clayton disagrees; Stallworth is a gamble.

Third Down:

Is J Russell the right choice for Oakland?

Clayton: Yes. Oak starved for QB, and after Russell's pro day amazements, he should be the choice to move the Raiders vertically down the field. Not the best choice for Russell (no kidding..heh).

Fourth Down:

Will drug bans be on the rise in NFL for next season?

Clayton: NFL's not overly concerned; maybe 12 suspensions. [12 sounds scary high to me]

Since there's no test for HGH, hard to suspend, unless they have corroborating evidence. Could be a few suspensions for HGH, though the usage will likely be much higher.

Tampa Bay qb 'controversy'....

Clayton: no controversy; Garcia will win the job. Gruden likes playcalling for lefthanded qbs. Simms will have an opportunity to compete for job, Garcia will win it. Gruden needs to win this year, and Garcia gives him the best chance to do so. Gruden could be expendable dependent on next season's team performance.

Chicago Bears QB situation:

Clayton: Grossman will be in last year of his contract, will have to prove himself to Lovie Smith.

ESPN host thinks Grossman will greatly improve.

Clayton sees limitations in Rex's game and in the playoffs, they will lose any chance at the QB edge.

ESPN host: Bears don't need a top tier QB to win, they need consistency 'middle-of-the-road' QB.

Clayton: But can Rex? He has yet to show level performances. Bears are like the early 2000s Philly Eagles regarding QB situation.

ESPN host: Bears can win Super Bowl with Rex

Clayton: 'Are you drinking the NFC koolaid?' The days of winning Super Bowls like Bmore Ravens did are gone. THe AFC qb's are far superior than NFC counterparts.

Clayton is taking vacation next week [so mark all your calendars...oy]

End of the Huddle...

Hope I paraphrased correctly; I think it's pretty close. Not bad for a 2-fingered typist, eh?

identikit that was awesome. 2 fingers?

I have posted a thread on "The Huddle" and bumped every week until Sept for atleast 3 years now.

I will start another thread later this year. Today I just clicked on ESPN to see if it was on yet, sure enough it was. I had to post it because they really sounded good today. Usuall this time of year it'n not as much info, but when he previewed the show. I thought wow, today could be good and it was.

identikit made this the best 1 day Huddle ever.

Thank you.

Heard a lot of this driving around yesterday and a couple things I didn't see above (apologies if I just missed them)...

Calvin Johnson's broad jump was the longest anyone can recall "in 30 years".

Ohio States #4 WR (forget his name) made a big impression. Great size and speed and caught everything. They talked about how at the big programs (USC, Florida, etc) there are sometime NFL-caliber guys who don't get on the field for whatever reason. Cited Pats drafting USC backup to Palmer and Leinart (Cassel?).

Also mentioned that the Pats set up shop for a couple days to do more player research after Florida's pro day.

Kiper and the other guy from Scouts Inc talked a bit about how agents try to influence them. Pretty much expected except for Kiper's comments about how once an agent doesn't rep a player any more the story can turn 180 degrees.

Same two guys said they couldn't remember a year when the top couple guys on the board might fall as far as the fourth or fifth pick.
