1.20: Who Should The New York Giants Take? (1 Viewer)

Just to be different, I'd say Aaron Ross. They reportedly really like him, too.

There are rumblings around Giants boards that are saying Tanard Jackson. WTF? I don't know if that's a rumor for the 1st or 2nd (or even higher), but if it IS in the first, new GM Reese will have some 'splainin' to do.

I have read some of those same things about the Giants liking Jackson.

I sure hope it’s as a 2nd round pick.

It seems like they need help at LB more than any other position. I would be happy with Posluszny, Beason or Timmons with the 20th pick.

1 reader, 2 answers.

Posluszny or Beason. Beason or Posluszny.

I'll take Posluszny. He's done nothing thus far to suggest he won't be very good.

I think whichever of the two they don't pick will end up in New England or Indy.

The glaring need is lb, followed closely by cb, wr and o-line. The Giants are in the same boat as about a third of the teams in the draft including Dallas, Atlanta, NE etc. It will be interesting to see where the teams target value in the first round. I gues a longshot would be Lynch if he slides ( I can hear the Jacobs owners already  )

Boring Draft

1- Aarron Ross - Solid not Spectacular

2 - Steve Smith - Solid not Spectacular

3- Jay Alford - Bad Pick - Should have picked DeMarcus "Tank" Tyler if they were going for a DT

Wish they had picked Michael Bush ... They need a RB and they will probably not get another chance at him.

Ross is already the best DB on the team...not saying much, but it's true.Smith could be the guy Eli needs. Should learn from Toomer and replace him eventually. I like that pick a lot.I agree that Alford wasn't the best player available when he was picked, I'm sure they could have picked him today, but he fills a need and is a blue collar type who will push Joseph for playing time right away. There is a LB or 2 that I hope are available when they are on the clock today. That will make this draft a solid B, IMO. Right now, I'd give it a B/B-.

I really agree with the bolded part. I would hate to think the Giants took Alford because he is a Jersey guy.Are the Giants going to address the offensive line at all in this draft?

4 - Zak DeOssie - Another Not Spectacular pick - Special Teams, Long Snapper helps but doesn't project to anything more than a decent player. Doesn't help for this year.

Denver just picked Marcus Thomas who has a lot more talent than he Giants waisted 3rd round pick

Thomas has some serious off the field issues.

As for OT who are the best players available?

Yanda from Iowa or maybe Free from Northern Illinois?

Passing on the trade with CLE and missing out on getting their 2008 first round pick was a big mistake IMO. Taking Ross in the 1st was also a mistake and a reach. The Ross pick had a ripple effect since the much better value for a CB after Revis and Hall were gone was in the 2nd round. Poor draft strategy IMO. Considering that, the Smith pick is decent, although I would have really preferred that they traded the 1st round pick to CLE and then traded up slightly by using a later pick to get Pozluszny or Branch or stayed at CLE's 2nd rounder and taken Ugoh. If they had done that, they could have gotten a CB who is pretty much the same as Ross with the 2.19 pick, such as Wilson, plus there is a possibility that Ross could have fallen since he is a 2nd round talent, not a first round talent. Alford was a big reach and I agree that Tank Tyler would have been a much better pick. Mario Henderson would have also been a good pick instead of Alford. With Ian Scott still available in free agency, DT is a position that could be addressed that way, but there aren't any OT's so I think Henderson would have been the best pick for the Giants in the 3rd.

Overall I think the first day did not go well due to poor strategy, but taking that out and judging each player individually I think Ross and Smith can help the team and both should become starters, although in Ross' case that really doesn't say anything since they need 2 new starters at CB. They are extremely weak at CB. However, I don't think you can take out the strategy and the fact that they passed on a great trade opportunity, they haven't addressed OT, and the fact that they reached on a couple of picks already, I don't think they got what they could have in this draft.

DeOssie has nice upside as an OLB, so I like the way the 2nd day has started. Not addressing OT and now losing out on Barbre is going to hurt this team, though. I really hope they can dig up an OT in the 5th, or maybe take Mason since they really need a kicker as well. The fact is this team has tons of big holes, so it's going to be hard to fill them all no matter who they take.

I sure hope the guy the Giants drafted last year from ECU (Whimper?) is ready to play this year.
So do I. I haven't heard much about him lately, though. And yes, his name is Guy Whimper. He was pretty highly rated coming in and has nice upside, so hopefully he is ready.

Thanks. I also edited to add that Mario Henderson would have also been a good pick instead of Alford in the 3rd. I have not read anywhere that the Giants were offered the same deal from Cleveland.

They said it on ESPN that CLE started calling around and talked to a lot of teams once Quinn got past MIA and started falling. Also, a lot of people were talking about the possibility of the trade for a while before it happened, so the Giants could have been proactive as well if they wanted to be. It wasn't hard to see coming. :P

Jack --- Reese batter take Mason Crosby-K in the 5th, if he's still there....I hate him so far. Should've taken Leonard in Rd 2 instead of Smith, who is average at best.

I agree. If Mason is gone I wouldn't be against taking Troy Smith. Even though backup QB is a secondary need compared to OL, another CB and a RB I think Troy Smith could be very good value for a 5th round pick. Plus, he can probably play a slash type of role, so he is versatile.
