Brandon Jackson will not be allowed to attend Green Bay minicamp because he has to attend a promotional event in Los Angeles for top NFL rookies.

Bizarre. One would think that the Packers wouldn't schedule their minicamp on the weekend. That said, the NFLPA is doing Jackson a huge disservice by making him pose for trading card pictures instead of attending the only mandatory minicamp of the off-season.

Thats the NFL for ya, you can conduct a Dog Fighting circut in your own time but you can't attend your first minicamp when they have a chance to make money off of you.

They're Pigs

Did Gonzalez attend the rookie camp? If so, he wasn't eligible to participate in camp again anyway until OSU's graduation. Rookies can only attend one team activity until after graduation.

As for anyone else affected (sounds like Brandon Jackson of the Packers is the only one), tough cookies. I seriously doubt that this event was planned a couple of weeks ago. I'm sure the Packers had plenty of time to make sure that their camp wouldn't be scheduled at the same time as this event.

:lmao: Jackson is the only player affected. :stalker:

John Beck and Lorenzo Booker will miss their team's upcoming workouts while attending a mandatory commercial endorsement.

:wall:Like Brandon Jackson, John Beck and Lorenzo Booker will miss their team's upcoming workouts while attending a mandatory commercial endorsement.Ted Ginn will be at the event but wouldn't have participated anyways because Ohio State's graduation is late and he can't work in Miami until June. Daunte Culpepper's progressing rehab isn't great news for Beck's starting chances.

Excellent use of the wedgie smilie sir. BTW, I agree - this seems really dumb...on someone's part.

Well and Ginn is in a boot still for his foot, no? But the 'bonding' aspect of minicamp is important too.

It's for all rookies.

Indy Star

The Colts' first-round draft pick has been prohibited from participating in the minicamp -- by the NFL, no less -- because he was one of 35 rookies invited to Reebok's NFL Player Rookie Premier. It's a major happening for the league and its sponsors, and begins today in Los Angeles.

Gonzalez initially declined the invitation, intent on participating in minicamp. When a few other players followed suit, the NFL's Management Council stepped in and sent memos to all 32 teams. The "invitation'' would be honored. Even if a player decided not to participate in the sponsor-related event, he could not attend his team's minicamp.

:) Then there are other stupid teams. Per PFT, there were teams (including the Lions) that had a mini-camp scheduled for this weekend but moved it when the conflict became apparent. Any team that is hurting because of this only has themselves to blame.

Hold On......... your an NFL Vet; your told that minis are the weekend of May 18 - 20th, you make arrangements to get into town that weekend.. oh wait; our newly drafted rookie has just been told that his "invitation'' voids any team ***tion that was planned for that weekend and we all have to do the minis another time.. :P come on dude; if the minis aren't gona to be moved for Brett Farve, then their not going to be moved for Brandon Jackson :lmao:

:lmao: The Dolphins are as dumb as the Packers, but according to PFT, the Lions were smart and moved their camp. It's got to sting for Dolphin and Packer fans knowing the the Lions are smarter than you.

Ah yes, because as recent success rate shows, the Lions are much smarter than those other two.

Smarter? In this case, maybe. But please note: smarter <> better. Maybe the Lions did it cause they need all the practice they can get.

LOL, I can't see why fans of the teams affected can't just admit that their teams made a mistake? As someone who collects football cards, I know that the football card companies pay a whole lot of money to the NFL to acquire the rights to the players and that the Rookie Premiere is a very big deal to them. It's actually a good place for the rookies to get together and hang out and friendships have developed in the past at them, like DeAngelo Hall and Larry Fitzgerald becoming buddies. They also do some appearances at card shops and free autograph sessions with kids. Here's a link of the festivities: Linky

Now is this more important than getting ready for the season? Of course not. But the NFL is a very image-conscious league and doesn't want the negative publicity of a rookie blowing off the weekend. So if you're a team with a top pick, don't you have to look at the calendar, see when this is, and recognize that if you schedule any team activity that weekend, your top rookies won't be there? Yes.

That's all good and well except the NFL never made it clear that it was MANDATORY until a few of the players declined their INVITATION.As for scheduling, many teams tried to avoid holding mini camps on Mother's Day.

What image does the NFL want to display that it is more important to reward their marketing partners than to allow their teams to be as prepared as possible for the upcoming season?

Got it!

Are you really that surprised that your last statement may be true? :bye: IIRC, there were a couple of guys that blew it off last year to practice. I want to say that Cutler was one. Maybe Marshall was the other and it was the Broncos that practiced. I thought that something was said at that time to the teams. Maybe not. But you have to admit, right or wrong, that most teams avoided practicing this weekend. That can't all be chance. It has to be that they knew their rookies had this obligation.

I'm not surprised at all. That doesn't make it okay though. Tony Dungy has been critical of the decision and has gone on record to say that next year he will change the schedule. They obviously didn't know it was mandatory.

My guess is the NFL heard crap from the card companies from some guys skipping last year and decided that it would be mandatory this year. Seems strange that they didn't convey that to the teams though. Maybe they dropped the ball in the transfer of commissioner stuff?

If the kid wants to be part of his team and not pose for some stupid Card..... then the kid should be able to do what he wants. Seriously, these rookies are Slaves to the system. Jump though this hoop, now jump though this one.

Don't understand how owners can put up with this.. Take Wolfe who is now signed by Chi, how can the NFL tell them that this player can not attend you mandatory mini because we need him to pose in front of cameras and makes us (the richest sport in America) more money.

:P
