Obviously, cell phones and text messaging are here to stay.

We've looked at possibly adding text mail options to the info we send our Footballguys Subscribers.

What I'd like to hear from you guys is how you think this could best be used and what type of information you'd like to see.

I mean a Daily Email Update in July is 18 pages long. I doubt anyone is going to scroll through that on their phone.

But a quick, "Jerry Rice Unretires" might be of value. But I wonder how many of those guys that get their text message aren't just as close to a PC where they'd see the alert via their email.

For submitting lineups and such, aren't most people online with their PC to do that? So a text message on their phone would also be seen in their email, right?

I'm open to this and I want to hear what you guys are thinking. But I'm also very sensitive to putting the resources we have to the best use. Every day there are 100 new things we "could" be doing. Most aren't worthwhile and would take away from the things we "should" be doing. Deciding what features are "coulds" and "shoulds" is always a big thing.

So let's hear it. What would you like to see and specifically how would you like to see text messaging used.

Thanks.

J

I would think that the big alerts that you all send out during the day might be of real value to people that do not work in front of a computer all day. There are people in here that actually work outside and not in a stuffy building all day long. I could see how those folks would want that info ASAP in case they needed to make a call to a friend who has access to a computer, etc...

It definitely has its merits and would be valuable to the right people.

I think breaking news on my phone is be very valuable. Would be great reason to join. Honestly though, what I do is forward my gmail to my phone when the email says breaking news.

this is something I'd like to see. Sometimes I'm not near a computer or a TV, but if something comes up, I'd like to know ASAP so I can get to a computer and act acordingly.

I would want you to make sure to restrict the quantity of messages though - too many messages would definately be a turn-off.

I voted not that interested just because I'm at the forum often enough that whatever breaking information there might be would end up being pretty redundant.

It could defintely be useful for a lot of people, I'm sure, I just think that the people that are likely to be taking this poll in the SP will tend to be the people who would have the lowest need for it.

I don't know how many more times I can raise this issue, but you guys should be offering RSS...if you organize it right I can choose the medium I want to receive information...maybe it's reading daily updates in my web browser, getting notified of player news in my inbox, and getting player alerts on my phone...

I'm trying to be patient here, but you guys are really missing the boat on this one...

I love the proactiveness. However, I get all my email on my phone anyway. As long as I get it one way or another -- I'm good. I just don't want to get an email AND a text that say the same thing.

What I'd REALLY like would be for you to figure out some way for us to enter in our lineup and have you text updates to us based on OUR players instead of us having to navigate through the entire NFL on our phones/pdas. That's GOLD, I tell ya'. Gold, Jerry!

I think it's a great idea... like another poster mention, it should be custimizable... players on my team... any cuts, trades, etc...

Not just all news

Though I'm sure we all want a flash if a Starting RB goes down...

I read some say they are always at the computer anyway.... well, now you can unchain yourself and go outside...

Its great, because it's that time you are away from the computer that you will miss something big.

Thanks code. Getting this right is something we've been working on. I agree it's an important thing.J

Hi Doc T,Can you elaborate on this?If I can do something on my end that makes it so people can easily set up their phones to receive just the breaking news, that would be something to look at.J

For me, text-messaging not a big deal. I would rather not have it.

I spend all day in front of a comptuer anyways. The RSS feeds is priceless for me, that would be great.

I would rather you commit your resources to continous improvement of your great products. It also sounds like many of your users have PDA/Smartphones/Blackberry and get email anyway.

i do the same... i also use opera mini browser and view my gmail, ala a "pull" type blackberry...Joe, a simple tag in the subject like "FBG:BN" would be a unique enough identifier for those using email filter to isolate the important messages.

I concur. The group of people that are big enough dorks that they'd want this minus the group of people that are big enough dorks to use their smartphones to access the webpage and their email already is bound to be a pretty narrow audience.

It'd be great.

The best way to set it up would be to offer several different options, as far as what people would like to receive for text messages. Injury updates, breaking news, scoring updates (This would be huge for people that are watching the games, but don't want to run to the computer to check other games: in other words, you'd get a text every time there was a scoring play in the NFL).

And people could choose which items they'd like to receive in a text message. Setting up as many different, specific choices would ensure that people could get what they want, and not be inundated with texts they aren't interested in.

Getting email from your phone is common, but in general not as convenient as a text message. Folks with Blackberrys wouldn't really need the service, but anyone with a regular phone, the text messaging would be much, much easier.

I couldn't vote because there was no "I would be interested if I wasn't the last person in North America who doesn't have a cell phone yet" option.

I realize you guys are *football* guys, not *webdev* guys...but, as a guy who's worked in this space for many years, trust me when I tell you you'll get a lot more bang-for-your-buck out of implementing a solid RSS strategy than a text messaging system...

VERY  Been looking to use this feature here..........would be golden

Been doing this on my own for three years. Anything that comes from FBG with "breaking news" in the subject gets fwded to my phone as a text. :banned:

So, I vote for not interested. Don't make it easy for everyone else.

Thanks arhn, How exactly do you do that? Is it the same for all carriers?Any details would be most appreciated. Thanks.J

I can't say what arhn is doing exactly but I can give you an example. If you have gmail you can click on CREATE A FILTER and a form will pop up. Here you fill out the pertinent information, ie. typing in "bryant@footballguys.com" in the FROM box and "BREAKING NEWS" in the subject line. Click on next step and choose "forward it to" and type in an e-mail address. For a verizon cell it would be 1234567890@vtext.com, with "1234567890" being the cell number. Then you click on create filter.

If you have outlook you can do something similar using Tools->Rules Wizard. I'm not sure about Yahoo or hotmail, but I would think they also have a similar feature.

As for other carriers I would assume they all allow for this and have a setup similar to what verizon uses.

Edited to add info for other carriers...(pulled this info from Southwest's website under Flight status messaging)

I would love to have the "breaking news" stuff sent as a text message.

But for the daily update stuff, I think unless it were breaking, the daily email would be great.

Thing is - I would love this but for only very important updates. I am talking "S. Alexander trips over wiener dog and is out for the season" type stuff. But gems like "Jim Sorgi stubs toe - downgraded to questionable" isn't something I would want to know about via this medium.

Exactly. I just don't want to be inundated with useless stuff. The first time I get a text message stating, "Miami signs 6 UFA's," I'm out!?!?!But something like, "Ricky Williams fails drug test. Reinstatement not an option until September," would be OK. Or even better, some sort of last minute NFL line up changes at the major positions right before game time would be great. Such as, "RBX who was listed as questionable all week will indeed get the start this week," or vice versa.

Yep, this is exactly what I do.

RSS and a PDA-version (e.g., WAP) of the site would be much higher priorities for me than text messaging, but I'll take what I can get. Right now, I use Google's WAP page to make it easier to navigate FBG. I think you guys can simplify the coding using XHTML to allow PDA users to see the site via Mobile Internet Explorer. I'm not expert, so don't take that as a given, but I know it can be done.

;) This is my thinking also. Could be very useful while tailgating
