Zoo York
2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Marc Bulger, QB, St. Louis Rams

Player Page Link: Marc Bulger Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

So many weapons to throw to. Holt, Bruce, Bennett, McMicahel, SJax, Leonard, the list just keeps getting better for him.

4,000+ yds

27 TD

8 INT

Bulger has a very good chance to be #3 or even #2 FF QB this yr.....

I can see him easily having a 30+ TD yr...

However; Bulger was sacked 49 times last yr.. that was 2nd most in the league for one QB.. If they protect him a little better, watch out.

Bulgar quietly produces terrific numbers year after year as long as he can stay healthy .. last season #3 in FBG scoring with over 4300 yds and 24 TDs his best numbers ever during a season that saw his worst completions per attempts ratio, in an Offence that was supposedly transitioning from the Martz era to a somewhat more conservative Linehan approach.

The offseason has seen the addition of D Bennett and R McMichael 2 more proven quality ball catching threats. I think if Bulgar can stay on the field he'll come very close to repeating last seasons outstanding numbers and again will outproduce his ADP

356/550/7.6/4180/26/10

:)

Bulger is a perennial top 5 QB. IMO nothing changes this year. He will still light up the offensive numbers. He may pass less to Jackson if the offensive line improves. But those numbers will just go to Holt, Bruce, Bennett, and McMichael. This is a top offensive team and Bulger will be a stud. The only thing that holds him back from top 3 usually is his propensity to miss a few games every year. But that shouldnt hold you back from drafting him and you can usually get him as the 5th or 6th QB off the board after all the big names are taken.

3800 yds, 26 tds, 15 ints, 100 rush yds, 1 td

I just wish he would put on some weight and grow an ### before he gets snapped in half. 3900 yards 28 TDs 17 INTS 75 rush yards 0TDs

Anyone predicting under 4000 yards has to be factoring missed games due to injury in their projections. He threw for 4301 yards last year in 16 games, had 2297 yards in less than 8 games in 2005 (on pace for 4600 yards), had 3964 yards in 13.2 games in 2004(on pace for 4800 yards), and had 3845 yards in 15 games in 2003 (on pace for 4100). My guess is that he stays healthy and plays all 16 games in 2007....

375/580, 4400 yds, 25 TD's, 11 Int's, 50 yds rushing, 1 TD

St. Louis Ram QBs have put up amazing stats the previous five seasons:

02 - 4480 yards 24 TDs and 27 ints

03 - 4210 yards 23 TDs and 23 ints

04 - 4615 yards 23 TDs and 22 ints

05 - 4351 yards 23 TDs and 24 ints

06 - 4328 yards 24 TDs and 8 ints - LESS INTS

Bulger himself has finished 6-3-23-3 in the past four years, playing 15, 14, 8, and finally 16 games last year. His ADP was risky in 03-05 due to his injury history. Some may still consider him an injury risk and he was sacked 49 times in 2006.

But if you can accept the injury risk, he is a reliable performer and has even more potential targets for the upcoming season. Holt and S Jax lead the way, but Bruce, Bennett, and McMicheal are also excellent options.

Bulger 370 completions 580 attempts (63.7%) for 4300 yards (7.4 ypa) 25 TDs and 12 Ints

Bulger regressed a good bit last season, despite the strong raw numbers.

Bulger led the league in fantasy points per game in 2005, and was almost as good in 2004 (although he ranked 4th behind the monster years out of Manning, Culpepper and McNabb). Bulger saw his FP/G drop by nearly 5 points last year.

Sure he ranked 3rd, but Manning and McNabb were way better than him last season. Brees and Palmer were a good bit better, too, but Palmer's greatness was minimized by his difficult schedule. Vick and Romo also averaged more FP per adjusted game last year, too.

I like Bulger a lot and have always been on the Bulger bandwagon, mostly because he's been awesome each year. His TD rate and his yards per pass rate went down by decent margins, probably because of the emergence of Jackson and the down year by Holt.

The Rams threw 30 more passes to RBs, 13 more to TEs and 53 fewer to WRs in 2006 relative to 2005. I think that's a big reason for the decrease in production by Bulger, and I'd be a little worried about him in 2006.

He's probably a lock to be top 10 when he plays, but his upside seems lower than in years passed, when he was a lock to be top 5 when he played.

he's dodged serious injury, far too long, for someone who takes such a beating under center..with all the sacks he takes, I wouldn't be surprised if goes down and out ,at some point this season. risky pick, imo. He's a sitting duck when he drops back to pass.. probably less mobile than Drew Bledsoe or Phil Simms...

Look for Bulgers #'s to drop slightly b/c they now have an idea how to run an offense (give the ball to SJax).

I would look at Bulger's #'s over the last 8 games last year to get an indication of what he's going to do this year. Average.

With Holt, Bennett, Bruce, McMichael, SJax, and Leonard who was drafted...he has 3 new weapons to exploit. How is any defense going to stop the Rams either thru the air or on the ground? I think he could see the jump to 30+TD...I didn't pencil him in for that but I posted what I thought were conservative numbers. The Rams have to be on a short list of offenses or teams that you want as many players from as possible. They should have a very strong pass attack and their defense is not quite rock solid yet so look for them to be in more than a couple track meets with teams.

I agree that the Rams have made some nice improvements in the off-season. I was specifically discussing how Bulger played last year. Although Bennett, McMichael and Leonard all come with several ???s.
