The Holland Grill (1 Viewer)

I've been grill shopping, and today I found a rather unique grill that I've never heard of - The Holland Grill.

Here's a link to the one I was looking at, and here's a link to an overview of how this grill works.

Does anybody have a Holland Grill, or know someone who does? If so, what can you tell me about your/their experience with it?

I'm intrigued and I'm hoping some people around here know something about these grills.

Never seen or used a Holland, but before you make a purchase go check out a Big Green Egg. Benson Pool & Patio in Middleton sells them.

One of the finest grills on the face of the planet! If you're lookin it ain't cookin.

I have one and absolutely love it. Would not have any other grill on the face of the planet. It may take a time or 2 to get used to cooking on it as it is different than your conventional gas grill. As the article says the outer edges are the hottest spots. There are no flare ups at all. So, there are no "hot spots" on the grill. Cooks large items very well. I used it to cook a lot of deer, steak, chicken etc.

I have one too and really like it. It does take some getting used to. Burger in a hurry? Nope. I can put a whole chicken on it, go out on the lake for three hours and when I get back  the chicken looks like a picture in a cook book. For some reason all foods cooked on it seems more moist.

My dad has one. But he recent bought a new Weber as well to have.

He likes it for cooking whole chickens, roasts, hams...bigger things. But did not like that you cannot really adjust the temp much. There was no high or low...just an on or off.

Yeah. From what I've read, one of the biggest adjustments comes from learning to cook purely based on time because the temperature is constant.I'm still not sure if I want to pull the trigger on one of these. It seems that those who have them really love them, but why, if they are so awesome, have I NEVER heard of them before?

They are made in North Carolina. No real mass marketing like Weber or the other major brands. If you own one you love it. Only having on/off was kind of weird at first. You do have to learn to cook solely on time because you do not want to open the top - "if you're lookin it ain't cookin." Kind of a cult following for these things.

Yeah, this could be a problem. I'm a little over-attentive when I'm grilling. I'm thinking this could be a hard habit to break unless someone convinces me this thing is really that much better than a regular gas grill. So far, it just sounds like I'd be drinking the kool aid in order to become a member of the cult. There have to be more FBGs who've heard of this...

Haven't used one personally. The concept is intriguing, but I'm waaaay too much of a fiddler to get one. If I were spending that kind of $$ on a grill, I'd go for a Big Green Egg. Thermodynamically, it makes sense and people I know who have one rave about the thing.

I looked at the Big Green Egg. I'm pretty sure I won't be able to convince myself to buy a 1 ton green ceramic egg. I'm having enough trouble deciding between a weber kettle and a weber smoky mountain for a smoker, and between a traditional gas grill and a Holland Grill for my main cooking machine. I'll stick to green eggs and ham, thank you very much!

Two of my brothers each have one both love them.

If you have kids and do a lot of stuff like burgers, brats, hot dogs - don't bother.

If you want to do bigger stuff like whole birds or tenderloins frequently they are great.

Seriously? Why?This could be a problem, because at least 50% of my grilling is burgers, brats, chicken breasts, spuds, etc for the family.

I was heading to the hardware store in about an hour to buy the Holland Grill, but now I'm not so sure. Guess I need to over-analyze some more.

I don't know about all that. I still do a bunch og burgers, dogs and brats. The deal is that it does not cook as quickly as your weber grill does for burgers etc. That is due to the fact that you don't get all the flare ups. It is a very even cook. Your burgers end up without all the crazy charring you get on a regular gas grill. Go for it I say. Report back after your first grill session with it.

Update ?? Did you buy it tonight???
I did! And I just finished eating an excellent steak that I grilled on it. It will take some getting used to because it does take longer and you certainly don't want to open the lid very often, but I'm very pleased with the results. Tomorrow night I think I'll be grilling shrimp and another steak. I will also be ordering my new Weber Smoky Mountain (bullet) tonight, and hopefully I'll be smoking some ribs next weekend! I love summer!

That's awesome!! Glad you went that route. Welcome to the club!

Grilled another steak tonight on the new Holland Grill, along with 7 skewers of shrimp and some baked potatoes. I may never cook inside the house again! This thing rocks. Of course, everything is taking longer than it should to cook because I open the lid WAY TOO OFTEN! I'll keep working on that.

I need to try steaming something on here this week. Any suggestions?

I made hamburgers last night. I thought they were done, took them off the grill, and found that they were a little pinker than I like, so I had to put them back on for 10 minutes. This timing thing is going to take a LOT of getting used to, but I'm taking good notes so hopefully I don't make the same mistakes again.

I took the night off from grilling tonight so I could assemble my new Weber Smoky Mountain smoker that arrived today!

Here it is fully assembled.

Here it is next to the new Holland Tradition LS grill.

Thanks to everyone for answering all my questions and for your advice. I'm gonna be a grilling and smoking machine this summer!
