2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Brett Favre, QB, Green Bay Packers

Player Page Link: Brett Favre Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

Used to be one of the best QBs in FF. Now is one of the best values in the draft year in and year out. He is always drafted later and he is a lock to finish in the top 12. Has 2 very good WRs to throw to but the depth behind Driver & Jennings is not good. Also, losing one of the best screen RBs in football cant help matters especially considering he is being replaced by 2 green RBs. Finally the Packs defense seems to be much improved meaning alot less bombing away for Favre. All that said I still expect him to put up QB10-12 #s.

3500 yds, 20 tds, 18 ints

Favre's passer rating was on par with guys like Brad Johnson, Charlie Frye, and Jake Plummer last season. I know that isn't necessarily fantasy related but it shows he far he has fallen.

He's lucky to toss 20 TD's this season, probably more like 17.

I have a feeling that Favre is going to implode this year.

Around the 5-6 game mark Favre will say how tired he is, and that this will be his last season, and how hard it is to get up for every game now.

That would be quite a shock, and he may already be thinking that, but the one constant with Favre is his competitiveness on the field. Old age may have taken some of his physical skills, but he is just as competitive as he ever was once it's game time. It will take a major injury for Favre to sit out a game, and even then he'll still want to play.

How long till he gets whatever career record he's whoring for? Soon as that's done, I'd say so is he.

Cmon he had 2-3 big weeks last year and at least 7-8 bad ones. I wouldn't even want him as my QB2.

You must not follow FF football, he was the #8 QB in my league last year right behind Brady. Since he was drafted 4 rounds after Brady you tell me where the value is. He will be top 10 again this year.

Green Bay's receivers are not that bad behind Driver and (a healthy) Jennings. Martin and Holiday got some playing time and were making some plays late in the season. Jones has looked pretty good for a rookie in camp. Then there are the two really big questions in Ferguson and Koren Robinson. If Ferguson stays healthy and can produce like he should (in training camp) the Packers will have a very good #3 receiver. If he tweaks anything and misses time though, Martin is ready to go as the #3 and Fergie will be cut. Robinson has never really lived up to his hype, but he's gone 9 months on his program now without drinking and that's a good sign. Was that the reason he was underacheiving? No one knows, but there's the possiblilty to have a very nice WR there for Favre.

As far as RB goes. Cutting Henderson hurts as Favre loved to dump off to him a couple times a game and he usually was able to get the first down. I don't know if the FBs they have now have that ability, but they drafted Korey Hall to move him to FB, but after OTAs they realized they have good talent there and moved him back to LB.

At RB, Brandon Jackson has shown he can catch out of the backfield and Morency is OK at it. They are not as good as Ahman Green was, but even Ahman was dropping a lot of passes last season so I think it's a wash.

Then there's the O Line. They are young inside, but they have been together for a year now and there is also a little depth at all the positions now with Moll getting experience and Barbre being drafted. Favre should have more time and the running game should open up a little more passing options.

Finally, the TE position. If you think Favre is going to regress, this is the position that will cause it. However, last season Favre didn't have any real weapons in the red zone and it affected his ability once they moved down the field. The loss of Martin isn't going to be a true loss, since he wasn't anything special in the first place. TE is a wash this year unless somebody steps up which is a possiblity but very unlikely.

Basically, the offense has improved. Not greatly, but enough that Favre will still be a solid top 15 QB this season. I even expect him to have 2-3 more TDs and 2-3 less INTs so he may move into the 10 spot maybe.

My guess:

3750 Yards 23 TD 15 INT

Thx. Frankly I wasn't into wasting the keystrokes.
I don't know if Phurfur is saying he wants Favre as his FF QB1, or not. But, what he is saying, and what seems undeniable, is that Favre presents good value this year.As of late, Favre has been selected around QB20 in drafts, and can probably be picked in round 9 or 10 in most leagues. Seeing as he's never finished below QB13 in standard scoring (as a starter), and guys like Alex Smith, Matt Schaub, J.P. Losman and Chad Pennington are going around him (guys who have never finished above QB14), I'd say Favre is :fishing: as a FF QB2.

I could see 3800/20/20 and 40/0 from Favre this season.

Favre has thrown for over 20 TD passes in three of his past four seasons....he's averaged 25 TD passes a year in that time frame. Marino threw 68 TD's in his last four seasons (average of 17 a year) and only threw for 20 or more once in his final four years. Two things:1) If anyone can be accused of record whoring, its not Favre. As his past four seasons have shown, Favre is still playing at a high level. He'll break Marino's records by playing far better than Dan at the twilight of their respective careers.2) Surrounding talent and father time have taken their toll on him, but for the 2007 season, the Packers are improving as a team and Brett should have one more 20+ TD year in him.

Brett Favre is yet another example of why grabbing value at other positions and waiting on a QB generally produces a better team. FBG projections have him at QB #16 (Dodds), staff has him ranked 15th. By FBG scoring, he has finished 11-10-6-13-8 over the past five seasons. I actually believe that he will play better this year as Green Bay's team continues to improve, but even if no improvement, he has averaged 3775 yards and 25 TDs recently.

Brett Favre 340 completion on 600 pass attempts for 3800 yards and 22 TDs and 16 ints with negligible rushing

Yes you have draft per your scoring system. The league I am quoting is a Fanball (Ext42) league.

He's (and McGahee) are the reason why I didn't make the playoffs in my league.
i guess YOU had nothing to do with not making the playoffs?favre does represent great value. if you're in a 12 team league, and depending on scoring, favre ranked 8 - 13th, wouldn't that be QB1 numbers? duh! so as a QB2, he would have fantastic value. especially when you factor in his durability.600 360 3800 22 22

er 18 TDs/18 INTs last year isn't exactly what I'd call a "high level." I'm sure breaking another record has nothing to do w/him hanging around though. :banned:

er 18 TDs/18 INTs last year isn't exactly what I'd call a "high level." It is when you compare it the level of play by the guy with the record....That guy threw for over 18 TD's just once in his last four seasons. Now that was an embarrassment to watch.

I'm sure breaking another record has nothing to do w/him hanging around though.

Maybe, maybe not. The indisputable fact is that he has played at a much higher level than the guy who's records he'll break at this point in their respective careers. If you want to throw stones, you are aiming at the wrong house.
