Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

I like Cotcherry a ton this year. This guy is a playmaker and I think he can make the leap to stud WR. I love the Coles/Cottchery combo this year and see both guys going over 1000 yds each.

75 rec, 1100 yds, 7 tds

 
This guy has value written all over him and could be drafted as a WR 3 in many drafts and I feel he has a very good chance to at the worst repeat last years performance which was good enough for a WR2.

Positives:

-Coach likes him

-he is known as a hard worker

-is coming off of a very solid year in his first year as a starter

-proved he can be a good possesion WR with 82 receptions but hopefully his avg per catch comes up (the nice reception total is an added bonus in PPR)

-finished as a WR 2 last year yet he still has many nay sayers: value

-Is in the exact same situation he excelled in last season and they have upgraded on offense with a better RB

-he is only 25 years old and should continue to grow in his starting role

-his QB has a new found confidence in himself and his shown confidence throwing the ball to him

Negatives:

-his average per catch was not high. Only 961 yards, on 82 catches an 11.7 average per catch.

-was he a one hit wonder and will he be able to catch 82 balls again this year?

-Only 3 other teams had 2 WR's on the same team catch over 80 balls last season: Indy, Cincy, Detroit and NYJ gives the league a total of 4. (Arizona would have been on that list had Fitz not been injured). Therefore with Coles playing opposite him is it likely that they continue to put up those types of numbers or which one of Cotchery or Coles will regress? Also, there were only 11 out of 32 teams that had at least 1 WR to catch 80 balls last season. Some noteable teams with not even one WR catching 80 balls last season, include the Saints, Seattle, Pitt, and Den.

Projected Stats:

Cotchery 80 catches

1050 yards

7 TD's

-Very good WR 2 numbers

-Underrated and great value as a 25 year old in dynasty

 
Not buying it. He did well but is still 1B at most, plus will get more attention than last year and Jones will take away some of those short/mid gainers he had receiving, plus giving NY more of a true run threat, they'll pass less (% wise). He might repeat last year's #s but no more, IMO a bit less.

:no: 1st year in forever that Chad isn't learning a new system and/or Rehabbing.... Last year was a 1st year offense with 2 rookie OL and a rehabbing Chad and little running game doing the best they can.....I think TJ opens up the play action game for Chad and Jerricho should improve upon last year.

I agree he should be good, but I do think those numbers are his ceiling.
 
Cotchery was finally unleashed upon the league last season and proved to the league that he truely belonged; if you missed his 71 YD TD catch and run against NE in week 2 you missed one of the most increadable plays of the entire NFL season. Over the final 10 regular season games and the 1 playoff match he amassed 98 targets, so it appears he is a definate part of the weekly JET gameplan and has the confidence of not only his QB but the coaching staff as well; hes a surehanded reliable reciever who compliments Coles and the Mangini air attack.

I see a slight improvement on last seasons numbers

From being a homer and watching every play, I have to say that's Chad's fault, really. I think his arm simply got tired. A lot of six yard passes. I fully expect Chad to be stronger this year. Remember, save for a few games (2 or 3) early in the 05 season, last season was his first real action in quite some time. Bullish on Cotch - 90/1100/8. And a tough, young guy. A steal for a sixth to seventh round pick (which is where you'll be able to get him.)

But, notice how his ypc and longest catch are lower. Many catches in December, just not many yards.

 
The Jets will not run the same offense as least year with Thomas Jones in the fold. I don't think Cotcherry will better his 82 balls. That said, Jones is a credilbe running threat who should enable the team to get more out of the passing game too. Maybe:

75 catches

14 ypc

1050 yards

6 TDs

Still, there's nice upside - I could imagine him catching 8 TDs and getting 15 ypc without too much trouble, and maybe better than that if he really turns into a blossoming star. So far so good, I'd say, and he's available for cheap (for now).

 
People not being able to spell his name right despite what he did last year should be your first clue.

He's going in the 7th round of most mocks and I'd love having him as my #2. Yes, Thomas Jones could eat into his # of catches but it can also be argued that Jones will just make the offense more effective in general.

I see what he did last season as the low-end.

An awesome season in 06 for Cotchery. I see him sliding back to the norm some in 07 as the JETS running game improves mightily under Thomas Jones, Leon Washington and the improved offensive line. Cotchery plays well and is almost a 1B to Coles 1A.

Cotchery 105 targets 65 receptions for 780 yards and 5 TDs

I have to disagree on several points. People expecting a significant inprovement in the Jets running game will be disappointed. The offensive line wasn't improved at all, and in fact it may be worse as a run blocking unit. Ferguson, as scouted, is not a good run blocking LT unless he's pulling and blocking in space. Kendall, the LG is unhappy with no offer of a contract extension, and has talked about holding out, which spawned rumors he could be traded, and there is no proven backup to step in. Mangold at Center played very well, but also has a long way to go before he can be considered a good run blocker... like Ferguson, he is best when pulling. The right side of the O line returns... and they aren't very good. RT Clement was a FA who never found another interested team, and re-signed with the Jets. Moore at RG is a below average run blocker. I like the Thomas Jones trade, but he isn't LT either, and won't fix the Jets poor run offense (not in yards as much as YPC) but may help Cotchery by taking some of the short pass coverage off of him, because Jones is a threat to catch and run. Pennington may have a stronger arm and a better deep ball this year, but he'll never be a good home run threat in that regard either. Couple that with the fact the Jets don't have a viable deep threat WR, and the defensive coverage against the Jets will remain tight... no fear of any deep TD threats. DB's will continue to play tight. The only long TD plays the Jets had last year were because of broken tackles and a lot of YAC. Still, I think Cotchery can improve on last year's numbers. Second year as a starter, second year in a new offense. Hard working coaches pet guy. Mangini just loves him. I see him very much like a Donald Driver. A WR that the QB trusts. I'll go:1090 yards89 rec8 TD's
 
I think Rovers probably has a good idea about what is going on for NYJ, but although the running game may not set the world on fire in 07 with T Jones, it should at least be a little better, imo. Also, T Jones seems likely to get a few more targets in the passing game and cut into looks from one or both of Coles/Cotchery in an admittedly small way.

For these reasons, I see Cotchery falling a little bit short of what he posted last year, but still having a solid year all together.

He's an excellent WR that has seemed to really grasp some of Coles' style, maybe it's just Chad's short passes. Since March drafts and current drafts I've been doing he's risen 3-4 rounds so....the word's out:this guy is good

 
In large part this is a question about Pennington. Obviously, he has an injury history, so I'm sort of holding my numbers for Cotchery down a bit as a risk discount. However, there are those who believe that Pennington can return to his 2002 or maybe 2004 days. If Pennington can put up something like 65% completion rating, some 7.4 ypa, and say 500 attempts (which would be a career high, but which is well within reach for a good offense) he can rack up 3700 yards, and maybe 20 TDs.

If that's the Pennington we're talking about, then Cotchery is going to have a shot at 1100+ and 8-10 TDs - Donald Driver is a good comparison for his high upside.

Why drop off??If Clemens were to take over, it would be because he's outperforming Pennington. With Clemens arm strength I only see a QB switch as a positive as the safeties can't continue to play underneath (which is Cotchery's strength).
 
Jerricho had 9 targets and 6 catches to Coles' 8 target for 7 catches. Each had 3 redzone looks. Any Jets homers have an idea if Clemens has a preference.

I'm not a Jets homer, but the Jets fans were cheering when Clemens came in for Pennington last Sunday if that's any indication.

I don't see that happeneingWith Coles on the team he will never be the go-to guy in the redzone and as such his TD potential will continue to limit him

Really? Watch a game...he hinders the offense. 99% of his passes float and the WR has to wait to get the ball. Every single DB in the NFL has enough time to read and react and either knock down or pick him off. His WR's have terrible YAC yards because they have to wait for the football. Face the facts...Chad can't bring this team back down 7 pts with his arm...He is not capable. He is the master of the dink and dunk (5yd passes)...in fact the coaching staff is handcuffed with him...They know they can't use half of the playbook and they know he will hurt the team if the let him throw the ball downfield. Defense aren't afriad of chads arm and the dare him to beat them deep stacking 8 men in the box. He can't do it.Sounds like an incompetent QB to me.

The most frustrating thing with Cotchery was reading that he got the most targets in the red zone last year.

This year it has been all Coles in the end zone! :wolf:

I agree he's not a good QB anymore, I was simply saying there are more incompetent guys out there. I'm not endorsing Pennington for one moment other than to say he's not the worst QB in the league. He may be the 2nd or 3rd worst.
 
Put it this way....as a DIE HARD JETS FAN and a totally addcited FF player of 12 yrs....I have NEVER OWNED PENNINGTON ON ONE OF MY TEAMS.
