2007 Player Spotlight Series

Over the course of the offseason, we will be evaluating a multitude of players at every fantasy position. One such way we go about that is through the Player Spotlight series. Think of the Spotlights as a permanent record on some of the more intriguing players for the upcoming season. Each Spotlight will be featured in an article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Desmond Clark, TE, Chicago Bears

Player Page Link: Desmond Clark Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide sustainable value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsBest of Luck and ENJOY!

37 receptions, 477 yards and 4 TDs

Ben Olsen will cut into his production coupled with a hangover from a career year.

He'll still be the starter IMO but Olsen should could into his playing time. No longer a TE1 like he was last year.

36 rec, 400 yds, 2 tds

Very few posts in the Desmond Clark thread as their is very little interest in his production for 2007. The Bears have not used their TEs much in the past five years. Their leading TE stats are listed below:

02 - Davis 20 receptions for 193 yards and 3 TDs

03 - Clark 44 receptions for 429 yards and 2 TDs

04 - Clark 24 receptions for 282 yards and 1 TD

05 - Clark 24 receptions for 229 yards and 2 TDs

06 - Clark 45 receptions for 626 yards and 6 TDs

Over the last five seasons, Desmond Clark had the only decent fantasy season among Bear TEs and it was last year. But now, its 07 and the outlook is not promising for him. There is another quality Tight End in camp, some of the younger Bear WRs are said to be recovering from injuries, and the QB position is still not solidified. The only positive is that the running game is much more suspect than last year as Thomas Jones has moved on.

I think that Greg Olsen will play a lot and will take away targets from Clark. I also think that the Bears will continue to involve the RBs in the short passing game with Peterson as well as Benson. I see a definite move to the mean for Desmond Clark.

Clark 28 catches 320 yards and 2 TDs

Bumping this because, to me, Clark is both a legit fantasy starter this year AND he's grossly undervalued beause of a rookie TE of all things. I beg people to look at the "accomplishments" of rookie TEs the likes of Todd Heap, Tony Gonzalez, Jason Witten, Antonio Gates to name a few before they start cementing Olsen in as the "Clark Killer."Cark was Rex Grossman's safety valve last year and is the consumate professional. If anything, with Thomas Jones' departure, I can see Rex looking to Clark more in 2007 than he did in 2006. But based on the few responses I've seen in this thread so far, the Shark Pool tends to disagree.

Let's discuss.

don't really like him, but that really comes from the fact that i don't like Grossman even a little bit. The TB game saved his 2nd half last year as his targets were really dropping off. Olsen doesn't have to have a stellar rookie season to eat into his numbers.

36/446/4

I waited too long to get a TE and got Clark. I hoped he would continue this year how well he played last year. With all that I'm reading, Olsen will be back this week and may cut into Clark's time on the field. I haven't watched any Bears games so I wondered if the homers could chime in. How has Clark looked? Is he being used as a safety valve again by Grossman? Is the consensus that Olsen will eventually take over or will they split time? I don't want this to be viewed as a "what should I do", but I need to look at my options with Clark. The waiver wire has the likes of EJohnson, MercLewis, DonaldLee, and even Owen Daniels. If you can, give me some feedback on the Clark situation.
