KR/PR Info or Insight? (1 Viewer)

One of my league has points for kick and punt returns for individual players. Therefore, last year guys like Santonio Holmes and Wes Welker had their values bumped.

Anyone know of projections for this stat or who are some players expected to serve a role on offense in addition to being the primary KR and/or PR? I can't seem to locate much.

Only one answer here..... Devin Hester

1128 yds and 5 TDs in return game only last year.

Well he's a stud in the return sense but he had zero production on offense in 2006 so he wasn't even a player worth rostering. In '07, I hear rumors that CHI wants to put him in as a WR3 and have the rookie Wolfe take over PR and KR duties. Fine but that still only makes Hester a deep sleeper as a WR. Basically I'm looking for guys who will be the primary PR and/or KR AND serve a role in the offense. (ex. Santonio Holmes and Wes Welker)

The best source for info is the depth charts (either here or @ NFL.com)

They will say who is slotted as the #1 KR & PR for each team.

Right now, offensive players that are worth rostering & have return duty are:

RB's:

Maurice Jones-Drew - KR

Vernand Morency - KR

DeAngelo Williams - KR

Michael Turner - KR

Reggie Bush - PR

Michael Pittman - KR

WR's

Wes Welker - KR/PR

Dante Hall - KR/PR

Josh Cribbs - KR/PR

Ted Ginn - KR/PR

Devon Hester - KR/PR

Antwaan Randle El - KR/PR

Obviously, it depends upon your scoring system as to whether or not these guys will be worth rostering.

For those that are already studs, return points will boost their status (i.e. Bush into top 5, MJD into top 10, D-Willy into top 20, etc., etc.)

I am in a league that rewards returners a ton and also includes IDP's so DB's that return are huge (Terrance McGee is the #1 DB).

This is definitely an area where doing your research can pay huge dividends for added value that other drafters may miss.

Taking Hester off returns would be idiotic. I think getting him in the mix at WR3 would be designed to get him more touches in addition to his return duties.Jacoby Jones could get a shot in Houston. Mathis is constantly injured and his roster spot is rumored to be in danger. Bethel Johnson has been cut by several teams in the past year. Andre Davis and David Anderson are also in the mix but not a lock to make the final roster. Mathis is also a lot better at KO returns than punts, so even if he sticks Jones could get the job at PR. If McCardell does in fact go somewhere other than Houston, then I would think Jones would figure in at WR3 behind AJ and Kevin Walter because there's basically no one else. Jones is considered pretty raw and has some seasoning to do but the opportunity may arise if he progresses quickly because there is a severe lack of talent at the position. Any injury to AJ or Walter (assuming McCardell goes elsewhere) would probably elevate Jones to a starting WR slot. Its probably a longshot but he's a guy who could conceivably become a #2 WR while handling KR/PR duties....

Thanks everyone! Your forum is very helpful unlike a different forum I used to use that involves that's name after a small insect that rhymes with pants.

Looking for a KR that might also contribute a little on offense? WR Terrell Owens fielded some kickoffs in practice for the Cowboys today.

NEW ORLEANS

Coach Sean Payton had said that finding a return specialist to take over for the departed Michael Lewis was one of the main keys during training camp. Lance Moore could be the guy. Moore was the first to field punts during special teams drills and appears to be the favorite to return kickoffs. Reggie Bush will likely be the primary punt returner, but Moore could be in line to return kickoffs. Cornerback Jason David and wide receiver Tremain Hall also shagged kicks during the drill.

... even the kick returner spot is up for grabs. That's where [Jeremy] Bloom comes in. The former Olympic skier missed all of last season with hamstring problems, but performed well enough in minicamp to gain consideration at wideout. If the speedy second-year receiver out of Colorado isn't up to returning kicks, Reid can always turn to two of the biggest names on the roster. "We'll see how it works out," Reid said. "I always know in my back pockets that I've got Lito (Sheppard) and Brian (Westbrook) if I need them. We'll see how Jeremy does. We're expecting him to do a nice job there."

:lmao: Fbg's are good peoples.T.O. returning kicks? :goodposting: :homer: He would be the top wr on my board and it wouldn't even be close.

A quick glance at the new team depth charts here on FBG's and a name of interest that I spotted was:

Mark Clayton WR, BAL (PR)

I didn't have him flagged as a potential returner previously.

Would be interesting to see if he's used in this role regularly or sparingly (like Steve Smith).

The Ravens continue to list him on their depth chart, as they did last year, but that's very misleading. They briefly considered using him when B.J. Sams got hurt last year, but never did. Cory Ross and Corey Ivy got the call. This year B.J. Sams, Yamon Figurs, Cory Ross, Corey Ivy, and Donnie Johnson are all ahead of him for returns.

Some camp tidbits...

CAR - rookie Ryne Robinson has been practicing as the lead punt returner

CLE - rookie Brandon McDonald has had troubles fielding punts

NYJ - KR Justin Miller has been practicing on punt returns

Check this week's FBG Camp Update when it comes out for more goodies.

Today's notes:

HOU - KR Jerome Mathis appears to be healthy and finally out of HC Gary Kubiak's doghouse.

NO - Reggie Bush has been practicing on kickoff returns this year... something he did not do in last year's games. He may occasionally do so in games this year.

SEA - Josh Wilson has not been getting as much practice on punt returns as anticipated. The team wants him to focus on learning the defense. QB Seneca Wallace has been practicing on punt returns.

from houstontexans.com
Healthy Jerome: Coming off what Kubiak described as the best practice of the past two years, wide receiver Jerome Mathis knows full well that for success to continue, he must continue to take care of his body. Mathis was saddled all of last season with a variety of injuries, but he now understands that he must make fitness and conditioning a top priority.“It’s the nature of the business,” Mathis said. “In order to be on this field and make an impact you have to be healthy number one, and in order to make an impact in the game you have to know what you’re doing.”This offseason, Mathis has integrated a variety of therapeutic elements into his routine, including daily stretching, massages and dips into an ice-cold tub of water. Heading into his third professional season, Mathis feels ready to reach the same heights he did in 2005, when he made the Pro Bowl his rookie year.“I feel like I put my time in during the offseason,” Mathis said. “Now I’m looking forward to making it through
kubiak quote from 8/3
(on who will be the kick returner for the team) “It’s like every other position on our team. Last year we were searching for returners with Jerome’s (Mathis) situation, and now all of the sudden we’ve got a good battle back there, so we’ve got three or four guys that can go in there in the preseason and touch the ball. Let’s see what happens.”

Like I needed another reason to bump him up in my receiving heavy/return yardage league. I'm seriously considering a trade up to get him because I'm sure someone will be smart enough to take him (I'm currently drafting #9).Thanks for the updates Mike. These are much appreciated! :)

Todays' notes...

CAR - As previously noted, it currently looks like Ryne Robinson will be the main KR/PR

ARI - Initial depth chart list Marcel Shipp as the no. 1 kickoff returner. It is expected that both he and J.J. Arrington will line up deep.

TB - Initial depth chart lists Mark Jone as the no. 1 KR/PR, and Chad Owens no. 2

Thanks Mike. Can you call Coach Belichick and ask him to answer candidly on the role of Wes Welker this year? :coffee: lol

In a league that rewards yards from kick and punt returns- 1 pt per 15 return yards. Any sources that can give those stats? I will research links here. Essentially- it looks like really bad defenses that get scored on a lot get the KO return yards and mucho chances to score....

Breaston looking like PR only or any chance he gets both? Thanks Mike/all!
At the moment it's looking like just PR, although he is practicing on KR as well. If he can make some big PR plays, it might encourage the Cardinals to try him more on KR... like Chicago did with Hester as last year.

Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Yeahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is great. Hail to the FBG! Great job on this one Mike!  :lmao:

So the big question here is- who will take over for Pacman in Ten. ? Cortland Finnegan; Courtney Roby; Chris Davis- This is something to watch for crtain. I feel like a kid in a candy store...... these DBs that take KO and Punt returns are money in IDP leagues- Chris Carr and Terrence McGee are going to light people up....

Here's a returner-related tidbit from The Denver Post today:

Broncos Mailbag

"The return jobs will be won during the preseason games, but going in, Domenik Hixon is the top candidate for punts while Quincy Morgan has been taking the first crack at kickoffs. There's a chance Hixon could do both, although his early camp shoulder injury may mean the Broncos will keep a backup. And Morgan has considerably more experience. David Kircus is another candidate for both return positions."

ST. LOUIS

New return man Dante Hall might not play because of a sore hamstring, meaning second-year man Marques Hagans and seventh-round draft pick Derek Stanley get the bulk of the work on kickoff and punt returns. Even without Hall, the blockers on return units and the coverage units need to make a statement under new special teams coach Al Roberts.

Breaston was back on KR late in the game (along with Morey). Shipp was in early with Arrington.... and to confirm for the Raiders, Carr was in on both early in the game and Higgins got time on both late in the game.

People in my leage want me to add return points, but we already give special teams TDs to defenses. Do you guys still give the points to the D, or just the individuals, or both? Is it the norm to not give special teams points?

i'm in a league with 1 pt/25 return yards. it goes to the individual rb/wr.

SEA - HC Mike Holmgren says he expects that WR Nate Burleson will retain the starting role on both KR and PR this regular season.

MIA - The new KR tandem: running backs Ronnie Brown and Jesse Chatman.

Anyone happen to have some add'l insight into Welker? I need to choose my keepers soon and he's an easy keeper if he is on KR/PR/WR, but not of much use otherwise.

Would MIA really risk Brown on KR duty? This would bump him into late first round territory in a local ppr league if he was looking at an extra 50 yds every week in KR.Also, Is Mark Clayton only PR or has he been working on any of the KR units?
