from a rams homer board (some highlights)...

optimism seems to be the prevailing emotion, with bulger & carriker deals getting done in rapid succession, & STL confident with free agent acquisitions & draft...

adam "the hulk" carriker looks like a beast, and is reportedly throwing OL around... :)

bulger reportedly is already connecting with his new toy in the passing game, mcmichael...

rookie DT clifton ryan has impressed early...

holt appears to be running with ease after off-season clean up knee surgery...

pisa tinoisamoa was kept out of drills earlier in OTAs, but has been cleared for contact...

stetterstrom is the favorite to keep LG job, over claude terrell...

tye hill looks vastly improved, which bodes well for the secondary... bulger was supposedly still carving them up, though... STL should have one of the best passing attacks in the NFL... if bulger stays healthy, few teams may have more passing yards & TDs...

bruce still looks frisky...

dante hall may be more involved in multi-WR sets than many suspect... he has looked sharp catching the balll...

keith jackson, jr has not been as impressive as ryan...

more to come...

feel free to add future reports as they break...

This is cut and pasted from a Ram homer board......

Went for the later part of practice so got to see the live scrimmages today.

- Carriker was only single blocked once and it was like the O lineman wasn't there. Even the double teams only slow him down, he is exactly what has been missing. I am not sure he makes a ton of plays this year, but he is going to occupy 2-3 lineman and make everyone else better.

- Bulger is lights out, Tye Hill must be thinking ' what the hell an I supposed to do' Tye had Bruce blanketed and Bulger just dropped them in anyway. While our defense cannot stop our offense, they are going to improve this year just from playing against these guys in practice.

- I will repeat from yesterday, Leonard is going to see a lot of time as the feature back.

- I love the focus on punts and kickoffs. Today the drill was to down the ball inside the 10 or 5. They were working on catching it in the air, which is difficult to do, but that is why they are practicing it. Th punter was dropping them in pretty consistently.

- All four Tight ends look pretty good, I m guessing Byrd gets cut. Klopf and Randy are catching everything in sight

- Dominique Thompson is really putting on a show on the first and second team and will be the 6th receiver.

-Steven Jackson looks bigger than our linebackers.

That is all I can think of. The offense was unstoppable in the red zone, they are going to change the rules and only give us one down if this keeps up<g>

muy interesante...Could he actually cut into Sjax's value after all? Sjax is still the stone lock as the #2 pick, but most of what we heard early about Leonard was that the Rams were going to move him back to FB...

must be news to SJax cause he was on NFL radio talking about how he doesn't beleive in RBBC and how a RB needs to go out and establish a rhythm to get going. He seemed absolutely confident that he would be getting a similar load as last year, possibly with fewer catches, but only by about 20 or so. Said he still expects to catch 60-70 balls. Also, why? I mean, sure, he might see a series or two per game to spell SJjax, but why in the hell would anyone want to significantly remove Sjax from the game? Usual camp chatter that means absolutely nothing. Goes on every year.

Anyone who thinks brian leonard will significantly cut into sjax's carries based on a training camp series or two needs to have their head checked.

From all reports I have heard Jackson looks good, big and strong.

I agree. I think that Leonard is getting good camp carries to have him prepared in the event anything happens to Jackson. The reports that Jackson looks strong, healthy and focused. I expect Top 3 numbers from him.Edit to add: I think a note to take from this is how well Bulger is throwing. They are saying he has been laser accurate and Holt, Bruce and Looker have looked great. Bennett and McMichael are doing pretty good too so far.

Exactly. SJax is fairly proven. The kid is not. They should be going easy on SJax in the preseason and hitting the kid hard because he's all the Rams have outside of Jackson. If something catastrophic were to happen to Jackson, Leonard needs to be ready to take the mantle. OF course he's going to get a large chunk of touches in camp.....That being said, considering the size of Jackson, I, as a Rams homer and non Jackson owner, would like to see Leonard spell Jax from time to time. I'm not talking RBBC, but I want to see the kid get 5 or so carries and maybe a reception a game....

I think Leonard can expect 5 touches a game, if you remember last year S. Davis spelled Jax usually for a series in the 3rd quarter.

 Especially a series or two in the first week of camp.

any Holt updates?

holt appears to be running with ease after off-season clean up knee surgery...
saw this on another site:
Torry Holt - WR - Rams Torry Holt estimates his surgically-repaired knee is at 70 percent. Holt says he's cutting on it and keeping it iced, but he's being limited. The 31-year-old wideout is going to be a slight injury risk during the season.Aug. 2 - 10:42 p.m. ET Source: stlouisrams.com

Listening to Jim Thomas (Rams Beat Writer) report on training camp on the radio he said that Bulger was running an offensive clinic against the Rams D. He actually called it Warner-esque, and he said he doesn't use that term lightly. Warner would run an entire practice and no football would hit the ground. Thomas said that was the way Bulger was operating the other day.

I love how the Rams respond to the Niners making the big secondary addition in the offseason. "we see your bet of a big secondary addition and we raise you Drew Bennet and Randy McMichael. That new guy can only cover 1 of them."

Seriously, can you imagine a 3 wideout set with Holt, Bruce, Bennett along with McMichael in motion and SJax behind the QB? Who can cover that? That will be just sick. And if they play more ball control and clock management than they have in the past, they don't need a stellar D, they just need an adequate D. If that D is above average and that Offense is as good as we are seeing in TC, the Rams are locks for the playoffs in that conference....

OK, let me preface this by saying that this was the first pro practice I have attended (with my lovely wife), so my observations may suffer from inexperience in "scouting" or benefit from a fresh look and viewing from a fantasy perspective.

My background, aside from playing fantasy for about seven years now includes playing fullback at the collegiate level and suffering through three-a-days in the heat/humidity of the Midwest.

The Rams training camp takes place in Earth City, MO (part of St Louis) at the Russell Training Center, very conveniently located just off I-70. Gates opened 30 minutes prior to the 10:05 scheduled start and there was ample free parking. Coolers were allowed, chairs, umbrellas, blankets, etc. There is a berm (hill) at one end zone and bleachers alongside one of two side-by-side fields.

We sat on the berm at the suggestion of one of the staff as today was a scrimmage and only the closest field was used (farthest from the bleachers).

Practice started a bit early (it was hot and humid, so I am sure they wanted to beat the heat). The players look surprisingly normal-sized until you realize that 90% of them are over 6'1" and weight in excess of 200 pounds. A couple guys looked bigger than the others though, notably Alex Barron (T), S Jax, Hedgecock, Carriker and Incognito was prominently displaying his belly with his jersey pulled up to his shoulder pads. Not a six pack on Incognito, more like a keg. He moved fast and explosively though (see story to follow).

The downside to the berm seating was that it was end zone seating so the action was coming at us, rather than being able to watch both sides of the ball and the lines.

Some observations from positional practices.

QB - Bulger was fairly limited and only took snaps for the first team (handoffs to S Jax, throws to Holt, Bruce). Bulger was sharp except for one pass to S Jax that floated when S Jax was covered and was picked. Frerotte is the clear #2 from what I saw today in working with second team and ability. He did throw one in the ground but otherwise made good of his time. Seemed to favor the left side of the field??? Fitzpatrick is a clear step down from Frerotte and did not impress me. Brock Berlin wore jersey number 3 (all qb in non-contact yellow), aside from that he did not do much else well with the exception of a scramble that went for a TD. Unless they keep 4 qb, he is practice squad. Fitz could be replaced easily by a fast reading qb with a sharp arm.

RB - S Jax is bigger than the linebackers and is a beast. Awesome foot work, no drops in passes, cuts on the field like it is the game pad for Dance, Dance Revolution and will come at the defender to get the yards. S Jax can cut between defenders at the first level and outrun any linebacker. Amazing moves. Also, he will take no flack from any D. He is top tier, no question. Leonard was getting the second team touches. He is built lighter than S Jax (thought he was supposed to be a power player) and I was really surprised to see that he does not get great pad level, runs with his feet close, kinda tip-toed in a few cuts I saw clearly and tried to get yards through agility rather than power. I will be interested to see if he is effective in the role of a S Jax type back. Travis Minor took third team snaps and did well. Nothing overly remarkable. Hedgecock is thick. He is listed at 6'3" and 256 and looked it. Caught the ball well and was used in a couple pass plays. The remainder of the backs were negligible (not to sound demeaning).

WR - Holt made good cuts and walked without favoring either leg with one exception when he kinda hopped in his gait a couple times. May have been nothing since I was watching for problems. Anyone worried about Bruce losing catches to Bennet need not worry. I had not been a big Bruce fan before but the guy is automatic. Sharp routes, velcro hands and caught in traffic very naturally. In a PPR league, I would not hesitate to have Bruce as a WR2 based on this one practice. He was Bulger's favorite target. Dane Looker dropped a couple and did not impress. Bennet has very good hands but his routes look like they were done by following the Arthur Murray dance steps. Nothing like Bruce's. A rookie, Marque White (free agent) has wheels and fairly good hands but looks destined for practice squad.Derek Stanley had a great runback in kickoff return that went the distance and might take the last WR spot. He dropped on as well.

TE - Not involved in the O at all in the first and second team. McMichael I saw once in motion and Klopfenstein I could not find anywhere, seriously. Aaron Walker caught a long ball in the only TE pass (third team) I saw.

K - Wilkins, 2 of 2 from inside the 20. Can't comment anymore than that. Fans are not allowed to keep the balls.

D - D line, good but handled well by first team O line. Carriker seemed to get double teamed a lot and did plug up the hole pretty well. The secondary looked weak and LB vary from good coverage to "Oh, you weren't ready? Want a Mulligan?"

O Line - Very solid. Incognito is a thug on the field and Pace is supposedly fully healthy. Barron looks like a science fiction prop he is so big. Pace is supposedly as tall but did not look it, maybe he is thicker. Pace was a slacker in the warm ups and his flexibility was slighter better than the robot from the original "Lost in Space" that hollered "Danger, danger Will Robinson".

Fan fun - S Jax cut and juked into a long gain and ended up in the secondary (it may have been a pass, but I couldn't see the initial play develop as I was trying to find someone on the roster). He ended up getting tagged by the safety Atogwe (#21) who either tried to strip the ball or shoved S Jax at the end of the play. S Jax shoved back, Atogwe shoved and S Jax rocked him with a push. Atogwe then came at S Jax, who hit Atogwe in the head (helmet) and a melee ensued (more of a scrum but I like the word melee). Suddenly, a helmet went flying off into the air from the midst of the multi-talented millionaires and the coaches lazily broke up the mob. Atogwe was bad mouthing an O player (I think a lineman, holding his helmet - was it his that came off and he retrieved it?) I think there was another push or two and then as I was looking at the roster to see who #21 was a helmet was thrown from one player and hit another in the head. My wife witnessed this and couldn't tell me who :excited: Suddenly, like a WWE wrestler who showed up three minutes late to the cage match, Incognito hurled himself into Atogwe and slammed him into the ground. Being a native Husker, I know Incognito's rep of being thuggish and I am pretty sure he was happy to "support his offensive teammates." Atogwe spent the remainder of the practice (that I saw) running grinders with the scrubs.

Bought an overpriced T-shirt that says "Property of the St Louis Rams Training Camp" against my philosophy of spending too much for anything, but this was a fun event. Anyone in a 100 mile radius who does not take advantage is really missing out. If we can get my daughter set up to stay at a friends, we are going to try to get to a pre-season game (cheap for tickets). Who knows, after my daughter gets to college, we evolve to going to regular season games.

Any questions, feel free and I will try to answer.

I have no reservations about Bulger, Bruce, S Jax, didn't see enough involvement of Holt to get a great feel for this year compared to standard Holt and would not put the St L TEs or D too high in the rankings. Bennet, nice addition but didn't get enough first team involvement to merit anything above a WR 3/4.

ETA - Dante Hall was not dressed out for practice. On sidelines in shorts and no pads but had a nice hat on, LOL

Still waiting to see Carriker on the field in action......... And, once again, I think he will be a special player in the NFL.

News around town is there was a fight on the field today. Stephen Jackson took a pretty big hit from our safety and Incognito (lg) came in and hit him in the head with his helmet. Linehan was pretty disappointed with his team afterwards and told some beatwriters that he wouldn't put up with stuff like that.

The account I read was that the coaches seemed pleased during the practice and that the next few plays the players were running and hitting with much more intensity. Maybe Linehan was just being pc to the press. I think Pisa nailed Cogs too late in the scrum. I think this is a good sign that this team is ready to start hitting another color jersey. :P Looking forward to Friday vs Vikes.

Was there and account is posted just above.

Incognito launched on him after he (Atogwe) threw his helmet at someone as the scrum separated and the hit on Jackson wasn't big, really wasn't even a hit, just Atogwe starting stuff from what I could see.

Atogwe was only one pulled and when the coach was reprimanding him, Atogwe spit on the ground and as they walked away, coach (don't know which) was holding his hands in the air as though gesturing "what, are you listening to me?"

Incognito (who was lined up at RG most of the practice) takes a lot of heat because of his rep, his actions were not unmitigated but easily most people would not have launched all missiles at once like he did.

O looks ready, secondary does not.

Leonard might be lighter than SJAX, but he is definitely stronger. In fact, in practice, he was the only RB who was able to move all 4 sleds, and that is including SJAX. Leonard is a workout freak and an unbelievable athlete. He is already impressing the hell out of Linehan. He will be more than just a backup RB to SJAX. He can run, catch, and block very well.
