Help settle this dispute with a certain famous wedding-wrecking FBG buddy of mine -- which running back would you rather have in dynasty, Marion Barber III or Michael "the Burner" Turner (and feel free to explain why)?

To me it's such an easy call it's silly, but this GB of mine thinks the results will be quite different.

This is a very roster dependent question since Turner should be worthless this year barring injury to LT and is basically tying up a roster spot. If you have a strong enough roster then he's the guy, but Barber is a good #3 you can plug in and expect decent points.

 
Right now, probably Barber, since I think the most likely result at the end of the season is that Julius Jones leaves town, leaving Barber starting on the RB-friendly Dallas Cowboys, while Michael Turner goes to a real loser squad like the Packers. Edgerrin James is a drastically more talented back than Travis Henry, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't rather have Henry on my fantasy squad.

If, during the season, something changes, then obviously this ranking is going to change, too. If Dallas keeps Jones around, or limits Barber's touches in a way that makes it clear he's never going to be a featured back, then Turner jumps ahead of him. If Turner goes to a team like Houston instead of a team like Green Bay, then Turner jumps ahead of him. As it stands now, though, I see two very talented RBs, one of whom is just in a much better situation than the other.

At the risk of sounding like a homer, Turner to Green Bay would be a great move both for him and the Packers. Green Bay showed last season it can run the football; all the Packers need is a dynamic starter at the RB position which they badly lack now. In my opinion, Turner would provide that type of presence and he would reward his fantasy owners with a huge season. Ahman Green ranked 15th in scoring among RBs last season so there's every reason to believe Turner could match and even beat that figure. Of course, this would be dependent on Favre remaining the QB. But given how Green Bay GM Ted Thompson has shown no inclination he has the stones to make a major move to truly improve the team the talk of Turner to Green Bay is likely a moot point.

Green Bay showed last season that it can run the football when Brett Favre is in town. Green Bay has yet to show that it can run the football with Aaron Rogers under center. I don't expect Favre to play next season... and even if he does, we're talking dynasty, so if Turner does go to Green Bay you're looking at a looooot of years of "Turner + Rogers" in the backfield (unless they replace it with "Turner + journeyman" or "Turner + rookie", instead). Even scarier, I'm not sure how much longer Donald Driver can perform at the level he's been performing at. That's an offense that frankly terrifies me from a Dynasty perspective, since they're about to lose pretty much every weapon on their entire roster. And I don't like their O-line, either.
 
I'm not all that excited about the Packers' future with Thompson as the GM but I do think the offensive line is solid and I do think Turner would do well and perhaps very well as the starting RB. I agree much depends on what the Packers do when Favre retires but it's not like there haven't been RBs who have done well and even excelled on teams with marginal QBs. I wouldn't rule out Turner in the highly unlikely event he went to Green Bay.

I wouldnt be so sure about Barber being the only back in Dallas next year. Rumor has it the Cowboys are enamored with Darren McFadden and having Clevend's #1 pick this year they might be in position to draft him leaving MB III as the back up again.

You answered 1/2 of the post.........who but not why. I won't argue with your selection, but I do believe it's close.Turner is basically worthless unless something happens to Ladanian Tomlinson. How many years is that going to continue? People keep drafting him way to high in leagues in hopes basically that Tomlinson gets injured and they have this new super stud. Kind of reminds me to a lesser degree of Maurice Morris a few years back as well as Larry Johnson to Priest.I'd like to hear why it isn't even close and when people can expect for this "not to be close" proof will be taking place.

This should be the last one, since he's an unrestricted free agent after the season.

I agree in redraft, but we're talking dynasty here. I think those who picked LJ in dynasty leagues ended up pretty happy.
I'd like to hear why it isn't even close and when people can expect for this "not to be close" proof will be taking place.

It seems like most people just consider Turner to be at a different level than Barber in terms of talent. And at this point it's just a one year wait before he almost certainly becomes a starting RB for someone, while there's no guarantee Barber ever gets a job to himself.

I think most of us know that. We're just not jumping to the conclusion that that means Barber takes over and races to glory.Personally I think that if a guy is that good, he unseats Julius Jones without having to wait for him to leave.

You could make the same argument about Turner....or at least getting more time running the ball than what he does. Julius Jones isn't Tomlinson, but he's not a poor running back. Jones WAS the starter before Barber came on to the team and he HAS worked his way into getting series and did get 15 TD's last year. I guess for you guys that are saying it's "easy" for Turner to be so much better, how many Td's are you guys predicting he's going to end up getting when he's the starter? 25, 30? so that it's easy to tell he's that much better. Meanwhile.....Barber will most likely have another season with double digit Td's and everyone HOPES Turner ends up in a better situation next year.

If they do, I doubt they resign Barber.
 
For what it's worth, according to staff projections, Barber III is projected as the 22nd best RB and Turner as the 27th in Dynasty. Three of the five have projected Barber higher, and Barber winds up with a small but noticeable advantage in average ranking, median ranking, and adjusted mean ranking (throw out the high and the low ranking and average the rest).

Also, his name isn't Michael Burner Turner. Either call him Turner, Michael Turner, or if you absolutely must look like an idiot and abbreviate everything, go with M"tB"T. Yes, it looks stupid... but then again, this whole abbreviation craze is pretty stupid, IMNSHO. FWIW, that's JMHO. YMMV. OK, brb, I g2g now, TTFN.

I'd take Barber, honestly. Not only will he do more this season, I'm wary of Turner in other places simply because San Diego's o-line is so good. Hard to project him elsewhere.

people keeping using the "if he was good enough he would take the job all to himself" line

whenn RBBC is the new fad in the NFL these days, why is it such a surprise if coaches choose to go that route even if one back is better than the other

in our scoring system, MBIII and JJ were the second highest scoring backfield in our league fantasy point-wise behind LT

why would Parcells want to give one back the lionshare if what he was doing was working so well

the reason i pick barber is that JJ is a FA in 2008, although i like Turber also, i'd rather have the Dallas offense right now over who knws what offense Turner will end up in, probably won't be a good offensive team that signs him

SSOG, what's your thinking here? I was a big MB3 fan from the outset, he hasn't been able to wrestle away the starting job from Julius Jones, who in my opinion has under performed the past two years. Watching both JJ & MB3 the other night against INDY ai think they bot are very average. There's no denying Barber's 16 TD's from a year ago, but I think he'd be lucky to hit 10 this season, or any season from this point on. Now, Turner has shown flashes in his limited action the past few years. I think what separates him from MB3 is that he should be the uncontested starter somewhere next year where as I believe MB3 will still be splitting time with JJ in '08 and possibly beyond. As far as disclosure goes, I own MB3 on two Dynasties and I do not own Turner on any team. I've been trying to trade MB3 in both leagues since February and I haven't even gotten a nibble, almost zero interest in him.

I can honestly say that I've never thought of any of those guys as starter material. I wanted no part of W.Green going into his 2nd year, never saw anything from Barlow to excite me. That said, I'm not saying Turner is the next coming of LT, I'm basically saying I'd rather have him than MB3 going forward in a Dynasty. I think MB3 is a fine goal line back. Do I think he can ever carry the full load? Maybe, but the important thing is that I don't think he'll be getting the chance to carry the full load anytime soon. That's what makes me choose Turner over him in a Dynasty.
