M.Schaub lets discuss. (1 Viewer)

Thing i notice is that he goes through ALL his progressions.

Stands tall in the pocket and doesnt seem easily affect by pressure.

Seems to be more of a touch passer than rocket arm type of guy, which i dont know is bad or not.

Seems VERY accurate.

BASICALLY im saying he is a very good REAL qb.

I had my doubts.....but just watching him i think you can expect good things from HIM/AJ/Daniels/A.Green and either Jacoby (who looked good again) or Walters.

The pass he threw to the TE Daniels in the 1st Q, Carr couldn't even dream about ever making. I'm serious. That would have been at best an incomplete but more likely an INT if he was man enough to attempt it.

That was the one that impressed me too. Third and long, the pocket was collapsing all around him, and he delivers a perfect strike over the middle to Daniels for a first down. Instead of 3 and out, it sparked a long TD drive. Carr would've dumped it to a RB or just curled up and fallen down.

Andre Johnson is easily this year "Roy Williams".

High potential WR that experiences a breakthrough year.

I think Schaub will do a better job spreading the ball around than Carr, which might actually result in fewer targets for Johnson. The sky's the limit on Johnson's ability, I mean, the guy was a 2x Pro Bowler with Carr under center, but Schaub is going to find other open receivers this season, namely Owen Daniels.Just a warning to PPR guys I suppose. While Johnson may post a career high in receiving yards and TDs (previous career highs were just 1147 and 6, respectively), I don't see him surpassing 100 receptions again this season.Schaub is a solid sleeper pick in drafts this year, and Daniels will probably be underdrafted in a lot redrafts as well. Schaub isn't afraid to stand in the pocket and throw down the middle, something Carr rarely did the last couple seasons.

I had Schaub and Johnson in a keeper contract league, but trade Johnson in a deal for MJD. A month ago, I was concerned that the OL would keep Johnson from doing much more than last year - which was WR18 or so. A lot of short hitches and the like. The encouraging thing about the game is that AJ had just one short pass (caught for 5 yards), and the rest were categorized as "deep" passes. Although incomplete, two resulted in defensive penalites. So there is hope that AJ will get more big plays. But I agree that his PPR value might be less.

We'll see if I regret trading away AJ. But I still own Schaub. I like his accuracy.

Thx for the insight! Did it seem it was just Schaub doing more with the situation or did the O-line look better, too?

thats why AJ will be a top 10 WR this season!!I've been wondering why so many people have been listing AJ as the 15th ranked WR...I mean, he did catch 103 balls with Dave Carr throwing to him!! now he has a ( seemingly) legit QB , so he should easily live up to his 'potential'.

he's a STEAL at his ADP as of right now! this guy could easily pop 95-1300-10. or in other words, better-than-Chad-Johnson numbers..

The OL was servicable as it was for the most part last year. It is still not a great OL, but a good QB probably can operate an NFL offense behind it. The reason so many Texans fans turned on Carr in 2006 was the fact that he was not under the silly amount of pressure he was previously especially in years 2002 and 2005. Kubiak still had to dumb the offense down to endless short patterns and Carr freaked at the slighest hint of pressure.

Great post. I think Schaub looks much more comfortable in the pocket then Carr did. I think Carr had been hit one too many times and had constant happy feet. Schaub takes his time and lets the play set up before unloading. The bummer is, Carr used to look like that too... He looked great coming out of college, but after a few run-ins with some blitzing LBs from the NFL, he started to get gunshy. I hope the same doesn't happen Schaub.I think he will make that team better this year, but not a lot better. Football games always have been and always will be, won in the trenches. If your OLine sucks, your offense sucks. And wel, theirs isn't great. I think AJ had another "man he has so much potential but he can't seem to maximize it" type year. Since he's my #2 WR, I hope he has a monster year, but I'm not expecting it.

Great info here guys. I read the box score and part of the play-by-play and liked what I saw, but it really helps to see the game or hear from others that have. :hot:

The late round steal is Jacoby Jones, this kid is having a great camp for the Texans, he could be the perfect wr on the other side of AJ. He also has returned one kick for a TD this pre-season, and leads the Texans in receiving. You could do worst with your last pick of your draft.

I think Schaub's pocket presence will mean fewer targets for Johnson, but a better YPC average for two reasons:

1) Schaub will read through his progressions faster and will be more apt to spread the ball around, and

2) He will be less likely than Carr to dump the ball underneath as quickly giving his receivers more time to get down field

I believe AJ is in for a big year.

I watched Matt Schaub play for the better part of two seasons in college. Here is the reason I think he succeeds as the Texans QB:

- He is extremely accurate... especially to RBs in the flat (Lundy caught 63 balls his freshman season from Schaub), TEs in the seam (Schaub turned Heath Miller into an All-American) and quick outs/slants to WRs (Billy McMullen caught something like 90 balls Schaub's first season as a starter). These are the $ plays in the WCO.

Those throws will also assist him in turning blitzes into positive yardage, where as Carr always seemed to take a sack.

What I don't like from Schaub his ability to throw the really long ball, which is what will limit AJ and Schaub's TDs but I do love his ability to find a TE in the end zone.

Therefore, Daniels is the shark move. You will get top 7 TE production at backup TE cost.

I think Schaub will be a good NFL quarterback, but never more than a borderline fantasy starter.

solid posting. very solid.

News: WR Andre Johnson continues to be impressed with the vision of QB Matt Schaub in the midst of game action, reports The Sports Xchange. Part of that was evident at the start of the game when Schaub completed his first six passes to five different receivers. "We have other guys that can make plays, and that's a good thing," said Johnson, who had one catch for five yards at Arizona. "He's dropping back and going through his reads and finding the open guy. Just like today, me and Kevin (Walter) both ran a stutter-go. Both of us were wide open, and he told me he didn't come to me because the safety was cheating my way. Most guys don't see that. He felt the safety was cheating my way, so he went to Kevin. I'm just real excited about it. I was happy for Kevin to get that pass because he hasn't really been out there like that. I think today by him getting to play like that, it gives him confidence."

This tells two stories, M. Schuab knows AJ is the man and wants to keep him happy which is good to see, but also that AJ is a team player and it really allows me to respect his attitude.

good post.

nothing to do with his potential this year but...

guy drafted him straight from his magazine Matt Schaub and pronounced it like the stock broker 'SHWAB" sound

everyone burst and i spit my coke out thru my nose

the guy in our league in charge of inputting the picks in the computer kept asking him "Who?" acting like he didn't hear for the noise

the guy thought people were laughing at the pick not the pronunciation and kept saying SHWAB, matt SHWAB, even getting a little angry and trying to justify the pick

which made everyone laugh louder

he said SHWAB about six times and another owner kept saying "Stop, just Stop please Stop"

most i've laughed in a long time

***DISCLAIMER*** This is in no way a comparison of Shaub and PeytonPeyton doesn't lock into a single receiver, but Wayne and Harrison each get plenty of targets. A good QB doesn't force a throw, but, also know who his playmakers are. AJ may see a slight drop in targets, but he was 3rd in targets last year. He also had a miserable ypr (11.1), you have to scan all the way down to Wes Welker (at 37th) before you find another wr with a worse ypr. So either AJ is a statue with no playmaking ability, or he should be able to do more with less targets
