Maroney - Goal line or no goal line? (1 Viewer)

So is he the goal line guy? Yes? No? Maybe?

Certainly not for sure - they brought Sammy Morris in for a 4th and 1 blah blah blah.

Anyone want to claim definative knowledge?

Hi dd,I'll be the last to claim any definitive knowledge there but my gut says Sammy Morris could be big trouble for Maroney. Not huge trouble but cut into Maroney's TDs in a significant way trouble.Belichick's liked him for a while. Minutes after midnight of the free agency period they were on the phone with him setting up the trip to New England. He's a guy they sought out and intend to use I think.J

Good luck getting anything definitive from Belichick.
Trying to decide as to how I'm going to rank Rudi/Maroney/Bush when they are possibly there for me at 11 in a no PPR league...If I new Maroney would get most/all or even some goal line work - I'd take him and end it...

Tough trying to decide between him, Rudi and Reggie B in a non-ppr league - I might need to have a few beers before my 1st pick in search of enlightenment.

You guys have Maroney projected with 5 times the number of TDs Morris has though?

My take as a Pats fan: Morris will get some goal line work...but so will Maroney. I see a similar ratio as last year when Dillon had about twice as many GL rushes as Maroney (14 GL rushes for Dillon, 8 for Maroney) but with Maroney being on the bigger side of the ratio this year.

Every time I have seen Maroney run the ball, I always marvel at his constant instinct to go north-south. He is very shifty, but he always seems to be going forward. A lot of backs with talent never made it, IMO, because they could not overcome the bad habit to go east-west that they could get away with in college. Unless we see some real proof of Maroney being deficient in the short yardage runs, I think this is nothing but speculation. Many different kind of backs are good short yardage backs. Tiki Barber and Marcus Allen were both good on the goal line, neither brought much power.

I'm really not worried about Morris as any kind of a threat to really hurt his production. He may very well get some looks, as I am sure Faulk will. But I think Maroney is a real deal talent, on one of the top teams in the league.

I am actually mystified by the lack of hype for Maroney on the board. And equally mystified by the people excited about Pats WR's. I am less worried about Sammy Morris than I am about how the TD passes are going to be divided up among Moss and Stallworth (The Hamstring Twins), Wes Welker, Ben Watson (Wasn't he supposed to explode recently?), Maroney, Kevin Faulk, and freaking Mike Vrabel.

I just don't see Brady needing to throw the ball enough to fill up all these players' stat lines. But I definitely see a team that will spend the majority of 4th quarters this year protecting a lead. Sounds good for Maroney to me. I think there will be few games he doesn't get 25 touches, and I expect him to be one of the most consistent, week-to-week fantasy performers.

I think Maroney will get some nice GL opportunities due to the frequency I expect NE to be near the goal line, but, like Denver, I think we will see plenty of those TDs come from Brady in the short passing game to the TEs & FBs which will prevent Maroney from being a 15-20 TD big time back.

They scored 20TD rushing last year :deadhorse:

I would be a fool to think I understand Belichick, and I'd go insane trying to figure out how his mind works, but I have a feeling that he'll let Maroney have the GL touches until he proves that he can't handle them. If he is unsuccessful then out comes Morris, but I think they intend to give Maroney his shot first.

Classic FF dilemma . . .

if Morris does get the GL carries, then Maroney owners will be furious at BB for doing so, when they should be upset at themselves for assuming that Maroney would get them in the first place . . .

And guys like Sammy Morris, Heath Evans and Kevin Faulk will see that Maroney's production will be limited there as well. The Pats scheme they don't just feed one guy.

Maroney proved that can move the pile last season and during the Pats 3rd Pre-season game.... he should be a lock for 10 TDs.

I think Morris will steal some short yardage work not because Maroney can't do it, but because BB will want keep his franchise RB healthy.

I also think, with Moss and Stallworth and Welker coming to town, the rushing TDs might slip a bit from last year.

Just watched the game from last week (tivo) and Morris looked outstanding. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he were to get at least 8-10 touches per game, including all short yardage. He could be a steal where he's going right now. I'm targeting him in both my 14-teamers.

 Basically, in my opinion, it comes down to this: If Morris can do the job, I would expect him to get at least some of the short yardage work, for the reasons the above poster listed.
