Game Thread - NE @ NYJ (1 Viewer)

Andre Dyson out today, eh? So you've got Revis and who at starting DB? Looks like Hank Poteat is going to see a lot of playing time today, I would guess. Not a good sign for the Jets secondary.

This is the week where Wes Welker begins his takeover as Brady's top target, unlike many preconceived notions it will be Randy Moss or Donte Stallworth. No?

ESPN just reported Randy Moss is not only Active, he's STARTING (what's that sound? the air leaking out of the Wes Welker hype balloon).

This is the start of a very tough schedule for the Pats who play the Jets, Chargers, Bengals, Cowboys, Colts in the first nine weeks, all before they get their week ten bye, and three of the five are on the road. They come into this part of the schedule with no Seymour, no Harrison, and many key players missing time over the preseason. The good news for the Patriots is that their core from the team that beat New York twice last year is here and healthy. They've replaced Dillon with Morris, they've replaced Caldwell with Welker, they've effectively replaced Seymour with Adalius Thomas, and they've added Brandon Meriweather, who should be solid. The Jets are also coming in with their share of injuries. Their starting defensive backfield is Hank Poteat, with whom the Pats are very familiar, and a rookie corner who got a late start to the preseason. Thomas Jones also missed time before the season. They should have homefield advantage, but Tom Brady has never lost in the Meadowlands, and in four out of six of those starts, the Pats have won by more than 6.5.

If I were betting this game, I'd give the 6.5 and take the Pats. The Jets are a very solid team and could surprise everyone, but that's the point - it would be a pretty big surprise for them to win this game and you're bucking the odds to bet on them even keeping it to 6.5.

First offensive play for the Patriots: Maroney for 11 yards. Second was Maroney for four yards. Third was Maroney for another 7. Think Moss, Stallworth and Welker are going to open up some running lanes for him?

Tom Brady is 2/2 for 19 yards, both to Wes Welker.

First play not to Welker or Maroney is a 13 yard run by Sammy Morris.

Anyone else watching this on CBS HD?

It is choppy as hell, freezes here and there for 2-3 seconds at a time... every Pats game on CBS was like this last year. Fox, NBC, ESPN... all of those HD channels are fine and always have been.

Is this just me always having trouble with CBS or are others as well?

Crystal clear here on CBS HD over digital cable. You on the dish?

Welker TD, missed tackle would have brought up 4th down
This is true. Brady threw that pass short of the first down and Welker made the play to get the score. That is what Belichick liked so much about him, though. He's able to make those quick shifty moves.

Quite the opposite, really, when you consider how the Pats offense runs. Welker is more valuable with Moss in the lineup than otherwise, imo. Which was what the first drive demonstrated. Teams are going to choose to leave Welker in single coverage a ton this year and that's going to give him chances. Moss will get his, too, but it is not just hype behind Welker, it's the situation he's really in.

Welker again, this time as the safety valve. And targetted again, but it bounces off his hands on third and short.

welker has 6 targets in the 1st qtr already. Would've had 5 catches if he didn't muff the last one. In PPR, this guy is GOLD.

Pats start this drive with two runs to Morris for six yards.

Randy Moss with a sick sideline grab for first down. 2 receptions for 32 yards so far.

Watson with his first target and first catch on third down.

Kerry Rhodes just missing the interception intended for Kyle Brady on the next play.
