Espn reporting Goodell confirmed Patriots using camera (1 Viewer)

The next game I hope Belichick sends someone to the sideline with a video camera that they don't actually use, but on which they've recorded a ####load of porn.

It will be interesting to see what BB and Kraft and the players have to say about this (after a couple weeks of course, as the initial comments are likely to be "no comment").

Questions for discussion:

1. Will BB et.al. bring up the alleged procurement of taped Patriots playcalling by the Dolphins last year?

2. How will Goodell address the perceived rampant cheating across the league as part of this pending ruling?

3. Was Martha Stewart unfairly prosecuted?

4. Who is the bigger villain: Barry Bonds or Bud Selig?

5. What will the haters say if the Patriots run the table after the cameras are taken away?

6. What will Patriots fans say if the Patriots go 7 and 9 after the cameras are taken away?

News is supposedly also on NFL Network.Rumors of two #1's being surrendered, but nothing solid so far.
I really think that would be way too much. But if the Patriots had lied to the commisioner along the way... "we will never do it again" or "we arent doing anything of the sort"... then maybe.

If they are proven guilty I think they should have to forfeit the win. One can only assume they knew the plays the D called and game planned accordingly.

Stay classy New England

I'd love to see Belichick get a suspension as well: No involvement with the team on any level for four weeks. This would send a message that the coach is every bit as accountable as the players.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the New England Patriots violated league rules Sunday when they videotaped defensive signals by the New York Jets' coaches, league sources have told ESPN's Chris Mortensen.

NFL security officials confiscated a camera and videotape from Patriots video assistant Matt Estrella on the New England sidelines when it was suspected he was recording the Jets' defensive signals. Sources say the visual evidence confirmed the suspicion.

Goodell is considering severe sanctions, including the possibility of docking the Patriots "multiple draft picks" because it is the competitive violation in the wake of a stern warning to all teams since he became commissioner, the sources said. The Patriots have been suspected in previous incidents.

The Patriots will be allowed an opportunity to present their case by Friday, sources said, most likely via the telephone.

The league also was reviewing a possible violation into the number of radio frequencies the Patriots were using during Sunday's game, sources said. The team did not have a satisfactory explanation when asked about possible irregularities in its communication setup during the game.

Goodell is expected to have a decision no later than Friday but that is not set in stone.

The league refused comment but did confirm Monday that they were reviewing a possible violation by the Patriots.

I think a more fitting punishment is forfeit of the game played. Draft picks taken hurts them into the future. How is that appropriate?

Most importantly:8. Will they erase the Patriots' week 1 fantasy stats?

There goes BB's image of a scheme genius. It's easy when you know what plays the other team is running.

interesting....
that to me is more forfeiture worthy, and if they were stealing radio calls, where there should be some sort of honor, then they should absolutely forfeit that game. The sign stealing, I file under something for future reference, I can't see how they would have employed it during the game. You don't need video to do that, hire a code breaker, get him seats in the stands on the opposite 50 and a cell phone. Video tells me that was for future breakdown and analysis. But if you were picking radio calls, that would have directly affected that game, dramatically and throughout. I can only assume the severity will be linked to last years accustation and denial.

Even more importantly, will I get a refund from my bookie for a forfeit ? I knew this was supposed to be free money!

Woah. That's harsh.
F that. It's just punishment. The Patriots did this last year up in Green Bay, and has been rumored to have done this against several other clubs. Who knows how long they've been doing this.BB was the first to come out and comment on how big a win it was, considering his club was in a two game losing streak. Al Harris commented on how the Pats pretty much knew exactly what they were doing on many of their plays. It's ironic how Kerry Rhodes of the Jets made the same comment after Sunday's loss.Whether the taping helps them is one thing, but clearly the NFL felt the Pats broke the spirit of the rules. This is not a first offense, and in fact is a direct thumbing the nose at the league. Break the rules once, maybe, but being accused of it by several teams and getting caught red handed is ridiculous.

If I am one of the players in the NFL who has been suspended by Goodell, I watch this with major interest....if the players can be suspended for off the field conduct, on-field cheating is much worse in my opinion and goes farther to tarnish the image of the league then a guy who went drinking after a game.....

BB may be looking at some major punishment if the Wi-Fi stealing is proven....

Interesting read:

FOXBORO - The Patriots [team stats] were caught illegally filming the Jets’ defensive signals Sunday - for at least the fourth time in the past year - and could lose a draft pick as a result, a league source said yesterday.

The Pats have a reputation throughout the league for such chicanery, noted former competition committee member Charley Casserly, who first broke the story of the Pats stealing signs last year for CBS. But not until the Jets confiscated a camera and sent it to the league offices following Sunday’s game -which Belichick admitted being aware of during his weekly visit to WEEI - did rival clubs break their silence.

According to league sources, the Packers and Lions also nabbed the Patriots filming their defensive signals, while the Bills suspected it and now are reviewing last year’s game tapes. Casserly’s report dealt with either the Jets, Bills, Broncos or Bengals.

“There’s a league-wide perception that this is something they do,” one rival executive noted.

In each instance, the pattern appears to be the same. A Patriots employee with a team-issued credential records opposing coaches signaling the defensive plays. It’s unclear what the Pats do with the information, though sources in Green Bay believed the cameraman was relaying information to the Patriots bench via hand signals.

Earlier this summer, a league spokesman said all 32 teams received a reminder that it is illegal to videotape opposing signals, adding that cameras can’t be used on the sidelines, in the booth, or in the locker room during a game.

According to an ESPN report, the eight-man competition committee could investigate. Among its members are Titans coach Jeff Fisher and Colts president Bill Polian, who have clashed with the Pats in the past, as well as Lions general manager Matt Millen, whose team believes it caught the Pats doing the same thing last December.

Among the possible punishments would be for the Pats to lose a draft pick.

For a window into the Patriots’ tactics, multiple Packers sources provided a fascinating account of what happened in the 35-0 victory last Nov. 19.

A man identifying himself as a Patriots employee asked a security guard if he could shoot footage of Lambeau Field before the game, and permission was granted.

Just before the game, he requested to stay on the sidelines to record quarterback Tom Brady [stats] for the coaching staff. However, he was soon spotted filming the Packers defense and signaling Patriots coaches.

A member of the Packers security staff witnessed the exchange and asked him to leave. He retreated to the tunnel, continued filming, and appeared to be communicating with the coaches via hand signals before being escorted off the field.

Asked why the Patriots weren’t reported, a Packers executive suggested there was a code of silence regarding such matters, particularly after a blowout.

“It bothers you that it’s cheating,” he said, “but it’s not the reason they kicked our (butt).”

It’s interesting to note a pair of comments after that game. The first came from Packers corner Al Harris, who praised the Patriots coaching staff.

“It’s almost like they knew what we were doing, you know?” he said. “You have to tip your hat to them. They ran plays designed for us. They ran plays that made us check out of some things. I don’t know who calls their plays, but Belichick is pretty good. Honestly, he’s pretty good.”

Following the season, Belichick conducted an interview with the Globe and singled out the Packers game as a turning point, coming on the heels of consecutive losses to the Jets and Colts.

“I think things could have unraveled a little bit,” he said. “It’s a point around midseason and that was a big game to rein things back in. I think it showed the team what we could do.”

TWO #1s!!!HOLY MOLYIf this turns out to be true, then this is quite a statement.
I say that since they cheated, they should be forced to forfeit the win and also lose pick(s) in the future. This type of action is inexcusable. Unless it can be proven it was Bellichick (spelling?) acting alone, a suspension to him alone is not just.

It will be interesting to see how hard he comes down on management. He's been more than willing to drop the hammer on players. But what about a coach? A GM? An owner? The Franchise as a whole?

BB has clearly cheated to win football games. That's pretty severe. Wouldn't that be equivalent to violating the steroid policy and then some? Doing something against the rules to get a competitive advantage? Seems pretty harsh...

I call do-over.

Anyway, saying that the Jets are the only victims is probably false anyhow. Seems like they are likely to be doing this with all of their opponents (witness Green Bay last year, far from an arch rival).

Given all the hand wringing and shoe banging that's been done about the OFF-field activities of teams and players, I really hope they throw the book at them for their ON-field transgressions.

I used to think that it was somewhat paranoid of coaches to cover their mouths when relaying plays. Not anymore.

I wonder how long that cameraman will get suspended. Minimum 4 games until he can start filming other teams.
