Sidney Rice (1 Viewer)

He has sick talent -- with Calvin, Bowe, J. Jones, Rice, etc. -- it looks to be a stellar class of freshman wideouts. The only thing holding back Rice is experience and the complete absence of skill at the QB position. I think he will be far too unpredictable to start until, at best, late in the season.

He's 6'4, fast and determined. I think he will be a starter in two games. Let's see, who's in front of him on the depth chart? Troy Williamson. And that's all you need to know.

Rice easily could have had Bowe's numbers from last week, if not better. Go get this guy right now if he's on waivers in your redraft league:

1) His body control in the red zone is just as sick as it was at south carolina, i expect him to be the first second and third option inside the 20.

2) Childress seems to have installed a "go deep 5-10 times a game" vertical offense, and Tarvaris has the arm to make it work. Rice will get most of those targets, and he showed last week that he can get behind the defense. Holcomb horribly overthrew him early on what should have been a long TD.

3) Rice was the main target on the attempted game tying drive.

Rice turned 21 right before the season started. He's nowhere close to mature physically or mentally as a WR, yet its already pretty clear that this guy is going to be a star.

I like this guy. He doesn't have great speed, strength, or quickness, but he's extremely athletic with natural hands and playmaking skills. The TD last week was reminiscent of Moss. Rice will never have Randy's deep speed, but I see him eventually developing into a quality WR in the mold of Burress (they have somewhat different playing styles, but it was the best comparison I could think of off the top of my head).

Can he be a WR1? Well you never really know until you know, but he certainly looks like a promising player and the most talented WR on the team.

In 1998 a 21 year old wide receiver for Minn racked up 1313 yrds and 17 tds. He was also 6'4 with sick running routes and big play ability. His name was Randy Moss. Sorry had to do it. :sarcasm:

It he worth a spot over a Berrian or McDonald type?
Berrian - No. Berrian has had a good season. The only thing holding him back is the lack of TDs. McDonald - Maybe. McDonald is a third option. Rice has a chance to be a #1 option. Rice has more upside for this season.

Is he even in the top 100 wideouts in the Top 250 forward....wait I see he's rated #64....do you think he beats that?

Sigmund you are being consistent. You have been high on him since the draft. I hope you are right.BTW, nice Phish references on you weekly game recaps, caught a show or twenty myself.

I drafted him in a Dynasty league. My understanding is that Rice was not physically ready to be a full time player this year. I remember reports likening him to Pinkston in that he was too thin and needed to work out more. He is very young.

This year I think his upside is limited but I think Rice's long term potential is tremendous. Great skills once he gets into NFL shape he will be a monster WR. Definitely can be #1 WR. My hope in dynasty is that the Vikings offense develops in the next couple of years and Rice is the WR fixture.

From the way it looked last game he already is the #1 guy in Minnesota, and Williamson appeared to be number two. Rice was targeted the most, and would have had two TDs if it weren't for a terrible Holcomb overthrow. That being said, I only see real value in dynasty leagues, because the Vikes WRs are going to be extremely inconsistent all year...that or consistently bad.

As mentioned by others, his ceiling is significantly limited in redraft. However, this is a must-target guy in dynasty leagues. There's no question in my mind he'll be a #1 someday/somewhere when he looks like this at the age of 21.

I just dropped Selvin Young to get him. Thanks all! :football:
I like this move. Being from Denver, I have witnessed first hand how we use RBs for a season or two. Once they want to cash in on their stats we get rid of'em. This year's Selving Young is next year's Mike Bell. Selvin may look good in our O, but so did Olandis Gary, Reuben Droughns, Mike Bell, Ron Dayne, Tatum Bell, and Mike Anderson. Rice has the talent to play on any team in the league.

I am not trying to downplay Rice, but when watching the game on NFL replay, it seemed like Rice was being targeted mostly because he was being covered by the Packer's nickel back, Bush, who is pretty average. The other corners, Al Harris and Woodson were doing well covering Wade and Williamson, so it would only make sense to target Rice. Don't get me wrong, Rice still made the plays, and he does have potential. I am just not sure we should say for certain he takes Williamson or Wade's job and becomes the #1 WR in Minnesota due to one week's production vs. a nickel back.

While this was true early, Rice beat Woodson and Harris for catches in the fourth quarter, and he would have beaten ANY defensive back on his TD - it was just an outstanding individual play.

Somewhere in 40-50 range. I believe he'll get enough deep targets and red zone targets to be at worst a fine bye week/injury guy in start 3 WR leagues.

He's out there to be picked up in my league. Do I drop Randle El for him as my #4/5 WR?

I've got TO, Housh, Holmes, Andre Davis and Randle El. I would drop Andre for him after AJ comes back.

I just want you to know the only reason you got him with that weak bid of yours was because I was distracted for three hours about two hours before our waiver deadline. I had planned on bidding just about double what you got him for. I probably need him more than you too. Anyway, I stand by my statements in another thread. Rice = ungodly talent and we may see it much sooner than most think.

No kidding. $21 is a steal. Not sure why I went with Crayton for 4 times the cost. :wall:

I have to agree with Sigmund on everything he said about Rice. I've been a huge Fan since College and thought he was a 1st round Talent. I couldn't help but Rub my eyes everytime I saw him on the Field Sunday in that Purple number 18 Jersey.

MY GOD, did he look like Randy Moss in his rookie Year out there. Just Physically, he resembled him so much it was scary! At 6'4 and 202 lbs, he has Moss's EXACT frame. And on the TD, when he seemed to Levitate and grab the ball with his hands, it was very Moss like.

While he doesn't have the 4.35 that speed that Moss has, he did run 4.45. That's PLENTY fast enough for a 6'4 WR to do some damage. I see him really coming on in the 2nd half of the year. I own him in my keeper League and couldn't be happier.

If he's available in your League, find a way to fit him on your roster. Listen to Sigmund, he's 100% Correct on this one!

I agree, the TD really reminded me of Moss in his rookie year, he has huge potential in my opinion.

Gotta disagree with some of this. Talent wise, I can't disagree, but I think you are overestimating the deep ball chances he's going to get. Ten is a little generous in the number of time the Vikes will go deep on a regular basis. I'd say six or less will be the norm. So far, Williamson, Wade, Ferguson, and Rice have all had deep targets. I think Childress will take a shot with someone different consistently for the element of surprise. I don't think Rice is really a true burner. They've been targeting him big time on third downs, so as for now, he seems to be working in the possession receiver role primarily. He'll get his deep shots, no doubt, but I don't think he's going to get the majority of the half dozen deep balls they'll throw a game. Heck, the way Childress used Peterson almost guarantees that even if Rice shows to be the most adept at it, it doesn't guarantee Childress will go to him. Also, as far as Jackson, while he has the arm strength to throw the deep ball, he has yet shown any ability to throw deep accurately, starting with his limited time last year, the preseason, or his first two games this year. There's been nothing to show Jackson is on the cusp of being accurate downfield. When Jackson comes back, Rice's value takes a hit, at least until Jackson turns things around in that department.

Yeah i was just being a jack ###. I have Young and think he is LT or something. No chance I'd drop him. I am also putting in claims for Sapp and Hall.

Interestingly my team sucks and has been decimated by injuries.

I now have Rice, Young, Graham and am hoping they pan out since I am in a keeper league.... My luck so far? They won't.

I just dropped Ike Bruce for Rice in my redraft league and will play him this week as my WR3 (due to the bye week). Hopefully I don't regret it!

ps: also drafted him in my keeper league this preseason

I like the risk vs reward you are going for here. There's alot more than just Rice doing well this Sunday. If, and that's a big IF, Rice makes some big plays and puts up solid numbers then it could be his coming out party against the Bears. Calvin Johnson was supposed to be the rookie WR getting all the attention. But because he's injured Rice has an opportunity to turn some heads. Good luck all who are using Sidney this weekend.

Rice is talented, but his QBs are not. Talent will only get a WR so far. Look at Steve Smith right now.

Strong year for rookie WRs. On Sunday The Pioneer Press ran a 5-point plan to fix the Vikings. One of the points was to give Rice more PT. Here's the clip with comments from Merril Hoge and Rich Gannon:

3. MORE PT FOR SIDNEY RICE AT WR

http://www.twincities.com/vikings/ci_7105876

Bobby Wade has shown he can make some yards after the catch but not the ability to separate from defensive backs.

Troy Williamson has separation speed but hasn't caught a pass of longer than 16 yards all season.

Rice, the Vikings' second-round draft choice, had enough deep speed to get open for what should have been a 70-yard touchdown against Green Bay and demonstrated his ball skills on a 15-yard TD catch on a jump ball in the end zone.

We're not telling the coaches anything they probably haven't figured out already, but Rice has earned more playing time.

Hoge: "I love him. I think he's got a lot of potential. I love how he goes and gets the ball. I love his size. He's raw, you can tell, but if I'm Minnesota, I'm excited about what I see. He looks like he could be something special. He's got a unique gift to go get the ball."

Gannon: "(Wide receiver) has been a concern for this football team for the last couple years, the depth and production at that position. If you're not having production there in terms of success, in terms of big plays and third-down conversions, you see less two-deep coverage. You start seeing more eight-man fronts with the safety sneaking down in the box. Defenses aren't worried about people running by them because you don't have the speed to get vertical. From a quarterback's perspective, it makes your job doubly hard. It's difficult in the running game to get things going. You're always one man short."

Well, I now own Rice as well. I have basically traded away a lot of WRs to get stud runners. I now have Portis, Westbrook, Ahman, and Adrian Peterson. So I will be spot starting Rice alongside Stallworth, McDonald, and whoever else I can snag off the wire.

Starting him this week. I'm out of options. Week 6 this year sucks! If he can chew up the Packers he should be able to chew up the Bears. Especially if he's going against a 3rd DB or Safety. I hope.

and Williamson appeared to be number two.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Looks like he deserves a refund from the Nike "eye training camp".Rice is coming along as well as owners could hope, but the QB play will continue to be his problem. When MN figures the QB out (i.e. getting a real NFL QB) and hopefully a new coach / OC - Rice should emerge as a solid WR 1/2. Especially as AD continues to develop, providing a good running game to take pressure off the WRs. As long as it's TJ or Holcomb @ QB, Rice will continue to be a marginal WR3 option - 50-70 yds with the occasional TD.Dynasty - get / hold.Redraft - marginal value this year.

Just add Rice: Vikings offense looks for more from rookie WR

By JON KRAWCZYNSKI, AP Sports Writer

October 11, 2007

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) -- Sidney Rice faded into the end zone, leaped over a smaller Green Bay cornerback, and hauled down an acrobatic touchdown catch.

The fourth-quarter play before last week's bye was the first truly impressive play by a Minnesota Vikings receiver this season, and it's no surprise that the 21-year-old rookie was the one to make it.

Rice finished with six catches for 75 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Packers, and it's looking like he is emerging as the Vikings' go-to threat in the passing game.

"Sidney is progressing, I think, better than any rookie receiver that I've seen," veteran receiver Bobby Wade said. "Especially for a young rookie. He's able to make plays. He's able take the learning in the classroom and apply it on the field."

It's a little too early to be anointing the second-round draft pick as the next great receiver on a Vikings team that has had plenty of them. After all, even with those fairly impressive statistics against the Packers, he only has 10 catches for 106 yards and the one touchdown in four games.

But as the Vikings (1-3) prepare for a game at Chicago on Sunday, Rice is showing signs that he has the physical tools -- decent speed, good route-running, sticky hands -- and mental makeup to be a success.

"Obviously those raw skills and ability are certainly the first thing that you get interested in when you see a guy that big, tall, fast, good hand-eye, jumping ability," Vikings coach Brad Childress said. "But then I guess the thing that we learned about him throughout the draft process excited us more. What I have seen here is just more attention to detail each and every rep he gets. He loves to practice."

Ask anybody in purple what they think of Rice, and his practice habits are always the first thing to be mentioned.

"He's a guy who works hard on the practice field, which is really tough to find," Wade said. "He's just really trying to get it every time he has an opportunity."

That work ethic was drilled into him in college by Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier at South Carolina.

"I enjoy practice. They call me hyper a lot of times," Rice said with a smile. "But I do enjoy it. I've been enjoying it since college. It's not a bad thing. It's something that helps you. Anything that helps you more, I'm for it."

Rice speaks ever so softly with a humility that belies his position, known as the place primadonnas go to strut their stuff.

There is no dancing. No trash talk. No props hidden in the padding around the goal posts for touchdown celebrations.

"He doesn't know it all; he doesn't think he knows it all," Childress said. "But he tries to get better each and every time he comes out here. He learns a little something different."

The more he learns, the closer he will get to becoming the show-stopping, double-team attracting receiver the Vikings have yearned for since Randy Moss was traded three years ago.

On a corps full of unknown rookies and journeymen like Wade and Robert Ferguson, the 6-foot-4 Rice stands out from the crowd. But that hasn't stopped him from bonding with his teammates on a struggling offense.

"I have a lot of great veterans that don't mind helping the rookies," Rice said. "Some places you go, they're fighting for their position or whatever. Here, with them, we feel like a family and we're going to help each other and do whatever it takes to win."

Like the rest of a Vikings pass offense that ranks 27th in the league, Rice still has a long way to go. But he is one of the few players, along with fellow rookie Adrian Peterson and veteran running back Chester Taylor, who has actually shown big-time potential.

"I'm excited to see him progress each week and obviously the more opportunities he gets, the more he'll shine," Wade said. "I think he's ready to step up to the plate and be everything we want him to be."

Does anyone have any inside info on when he might be a Starter? He was in on most 3WR sets in Week 4, but in some of those, Ferguson was in.

I just don't understand Childress. You'd think he'd want the best players on the field.

Mulling making a move for this guy today. Brandon Jones would get the axe.

Just not sure I can trust Childress

For both you and Sig, would you consider dropping Clayton of Baltimore for Rice. I guess the question do you guys see Rice having more value going forward till end of the season?
