Now, I'm a big time Jets fan, always liked Pennington. The problem I do have with Pennington is his arm strength. Too frequently defenses are stacking the box with eight guys to stop the run because they are not threatened by being beat over the top. Safeties can easily recover if Pennington decides to throw "long" with the lack of zip on the ball. This is one of the main reasons that TJones just can't get it started this season. I think the offense needs Clemens to keep the defenses honest and let this team take off (as many also believe).Looking at the remaining schedule and with the Jets current 1-3 record, I think Clemens may be coming in sooner than later. He looked solid against the Ravens D, which isn't exactly the most friendly place to begin your career. With the way the Jets have been playing and their remaining schedule, I think Clemens begins week 12 at Dallas or week 13 at Miami after the Jets are officially out of playoff contention. The reason I think they wait for playoff contention is because it seems that Mangini's respect for Pennington and how he's fought back from multiple injuries is high and he doesn't want to just yank him out of there - feels some sort of loyalty to him. Many will say that this is a business and if the playoffs are on the line, the best QB should be in there, but I'm not sure that this is what's going on with Pennington and the Jets. I think Pennington will still find a starting job out there (maybe small pick trade in the offseason with the Bears), but he isn't fit for Schottenheimer's offense (he's more fit for a game managing position like the Bears, in my opinion). Schottenheimer needs a guy with a much stronger arm.Remaining schedule:

With that being said - I love the Clemens kid. I think he'll really turn this passing offense into a solid unit, freeing up the running lanes for TJones.

As long as pennington stays at 75% or whatever he is for completion percentage, he'll keep his job and it's not even an issue IMO.

Brady's been amazing and we'd be hearing more about Chad if not for him

Honestly... the completion percentage is nice and everything, but the jets are 1-3 with Pennington. If he were completing 50% of his passes and the Jets were 3-1, he'd keep the job. This is the second week in a row that he's sealed the game for the opposing team with just an awful decision. He isn't long for the starting QB for the Jets.

It's not so much the bad decisions as the soft, rainbow-like throws. He's essentially throwing jump-balls on anything longer than ten yards or so.

I'm a big Jet fan, and I always liked Penny, but it's pretty clear that since his injuries he's not the QB he used to be. He never had a cannon arm, but before he got hurt, he at least had enough of an arm to keep a defense somewhat honest (at his best, his arm was about as strong as Montana's.)

Chad can't do that anymore - there's no zip on his throws at all. He can't hit a receiver in stride - they have to turn around and wait for a long pass. And, unlike last year, the defenses now know that for certain - they're just waiting for that soft lob. I keep thinking Penny's going to get Coles killed :confused:

 
that jump pass was the end of the pennington era for me. He threw a 30 yard jump pass, off his back foot, into a double team..... ON FIRST DOWN.....WITH THE LEAD.

That is an absolutely inexcusable throw, and it needs to send him to the bench, plain and simple. The jets need to make major changes. First of all, i wish they would just scrap the 3-4 defense. It flat out doesnt work with these players. Robertson and Vilma (both high first rounders) are rendered useless. Ellis is not the same player. The only defensive player that benefits is Bryan Thomas, and he's still no superstar.

For the jets to do anything this year, they needed to draft/sign some road graders on the O-line. If they had gave kendall his extra million, and signed/ drafted a decent guard or RT, the running game would be 10x better. As it stands now, we get no push and need to rely on draws to get any yards. With a weak arm QB, thats a recipe for disaster. Bottom line the jets lines are undersized, and 2 of their top 4 defensive talents are playing out position. Its ugly, and its gonna get uglier, especially on offense.

 
I just saw that Aaron Ross INT, and all I can say is....either Pennington made a terrible throw and put nothing on that pass or that is a perfect example of his infamous arm strength I have been hearing about. He is an NFL QB that is very middle of the road and he will never amount to much if he not surrounded by elite players.

Im hoping for Clemens soon.

 
The time has come to make the change - Mangini seems to have lost his aggresive nature so far this year - hope he isnt loyal to Chad to a fault - its clear a change is needed. At worst it lets the team know if it needs to draft a QB early next year - at worst it energizes the team. JEts have weapons in TJ, LC and Cotch - Penny is killing them with those balloon balls and bad decisions. Its time for the kid to get a chance.

Chad's always relied on good decision making to bail him out of his questionable throwing abilities. After these last two games, I'm convinced that decision making ability is gone. He's floating the ball more this year than he has at any other time in his career. He's throwing easily passes that get picked way too easily, and he's routinely leaving his receivers hung out to dry. I've always liked Pennington and thought he was a good game manager, but now I'm pretty certain - it's time to see what Clemens can do for real.

I dont know about the rest of you Jet fans, but I was pretty happy with the way Clemens played against Baltimore. Had it not been for a couple of Mcariens drops(1 in the EZ) in the closing minutes , he would have had the Jets going to OT

 
If the Jets are serious about their future Pennington will be benched. Similar situation in Denver last year, Plummer probably could have gotten the Broncos into the playoffs but didn't have the skills to get them to the big game. Ditto for Pennington, he might be able to win some games but he is not going to take this team far in the playoffs. Time to see what Clemens can do.

probably was coach speak but MAngini was asked about a change after the game and said he had no intention in the immediate future of making a change - guess he is seeing something different than the rest of us!
 
Out of curiousity, if Clemens takes over by week 7-9, what level QB (in fantasy terms) would you expect for the rest of the season? How about next year?

do you guys see coles value jumping or taking a hit if clemens takes over? i am thinking about giving the henry owner selvin for mr coles, but im just curious what your thoughts of his value would be without chad

 
I have been a fan of Chad for sometime, but he needs to be moved to the pine, it appears as if he has little left in the tank. I think Clemens could start as early as next week.

Not necessarily.But I don't think we'll really know until about 4:00 on Sunday.
 
Not a Jets fan, but I'm really excited about Clemens. Unfortunately I'm not sure Mangini feels the pressure to start him yet.

Normally I'd agree but NY teams have always been real tough on their coaches so I'd have to say it is quite possible. Some had Coughlin getting fired with a winning record just off making the playoffs. NY is a tough "town" to coach in.

He did, but that was also in the heat of the moment right after the game.Once Mangini has had a chance to review the game film, he may very well decide to make a change. I think Chad still will get the start, but there will be a quick hook if he struggles right out of the gate.I've been a big a Chad supporter as anyone, and believe the whole noodle-arm thing has been overrated. When the team - not just Chad - is playing horribly, it's supposedly Chad's arm, but when the team goes to the playoffs last year, all of a sudden the critics say Chad's arm is just fine. All that said, I agree with Rovers that I've never seen Chad look so bad. The zip has (obviously) never been there, but it's the striking lack of accuracy and bad decision making that is the issue here. Seems to be much more of a mental than a physical thing. If nothing else, at 1-5 with no playoffs in sight, I think it's time to see what Clemens can do. The team needs to find out whether Clemens can be a competent starter in this league or they need to go in a different direction next year.

I find threads like this funny. And it's why we all earn our stripes a FF geeks.

Mangini and Schottenheimer watch Clemens and Pennington throw more passes than anyone here could ever HOPE to see, and each week they stay with Chad.

He practices better, he plays better, he starts.

If Clemens was better, they would start him, I have no doubts.

If they thought they were out of the playoff hunt (they aren't; yet) they may replace Chad.

If you think Clemens played well vs the Ravens, you were only watching 7 minutes of that game, he was overmatched in a big way for 53 minutes.

That's what I see. He, IMHO, cost them the game against the Giants. I haven't seen this week, but I can believe it. For the scheme they're running, his passes just aren't working. He completes the short ones, but not in space., because the field is shorter with him on it. Kellen has that stronger arm to capitalize and move the defense away from the LOS, allowing that same 8 yard pss to be caught with one man to beat instead of 3. Yeah, Chad completes a lot, but the uglies are still just as ugly and costing games. Like Romo last year, I think the potential upside, bolth short and long term, warrants playing the young guy. I'm not suggesting Clemens can be the next Romo, but you've got to see what you've got, and it can't make the team any worse.
