Falcons will select third in the 2008 draft

The Falcons will select third in the 2008 NFL draft, getting the pick in the third tie-breaker between four teams. Miami (1-15) and St. Louis (3-13) will make the first two picks.

The Falcons, Oakland, Kansas City and the New York Jets all finished 4-12. The Falcons, Raiders and Chiefs had identical strengths of schedule, the first tie-breaker. The Raiders and Chiefs split their two meetings, the second tie-breaker, and neither played the Falcons. The Falcons won the third tie-breaker, division record, by going 1-5 in the NFC South as the Raiders and Chiefs were both 2-4 in the AFC West. The tie-breaker between the Raiders and Chiefs was broken by virtue of the Raiders having a worse record among common opponents, the fourth tie-breaker.

The Falcons' victory Sunday did not cost them a spot in the draft order. Had the Falcons lost and finished tied with St. Louis at 3-13, the Rams would still have picked second based on strength of schedule.

San Francisco and Baltimore both finished 5-11. New England, getting the 49ers' first-round pick, will select seventh and the Ravens eighth based on strength of schedule.

Seven teams are tied with 7-9 records pending tie-breakers. Next are four teams at 8-8, including Houston. Since the Falcons receive the Texans' second-round pick after the Matt Schuab trade, they will also make a selection between the 16-19 pick of the second round, pending tie-breakers.

As a Jets fan... I have very mixed feelings about their win yesterday. It also seemed that the Cheifs played them half heartly as well.

1. Miami: too many needs to call

2. St. Louis: OL / many D needs

3. Atlanta: Offense; QB / RB / OL mostly

4. Oakland: WR / RB / DL

5. Kansas City: Not sure here... QB

6. N.Y. Jets: DMac if he slips this far... Please; maybe take the next best RB if Atl or Oak take him.

7. New England (from San Fran.)

8. Baltimore

I am a Jets fan as well, but i think we have more pressing needs on the OL and DL. I dont think it would matter if we had Barry Sanders with the current line - we need more help on OL than at RB. That creampuff schedule we had last year gave a lot of Jets fans high expectations this year, but I remember looking at the schedule in the preseason with my buddy and we gave them 6 wins at best. Lets hope Mangini comes back strong next year.

Falcons, Oakland, K.C. vie for third draft pick

This story corrects an earlier version that inaccurately stated the Falcons had clinched the third pick in the 2008 draft.

The Falcons will select third, fourth or fifth in the 2008 NFL draft after a coin flip will be used to break a three-way tie. The date of the tiebreaking coin flip has yet to be announced.

The Falcons are tied with Oakland and Kansas City. All three teams, plus, the New York Jets, finished at 4-12. The Falcons, Raiders and Chiefs finished with identical strengths of schedule. The NFL has no other tie-breaker in the case of three-way ties. The Jets had a tougher strength of schedule than the three other teams and will pick sixth.

Miami (1-15) and St. Louis (3-13) will make the first two picks.

San Francisco and Baltimore both finished 5-11. New England, which owns the 49ers' first-round pick, will select seventh and the Ravens eighth based on strength of schedule.

Seven teams are tied with 7-9 records. Next are four teams at 8-8, including Houston. Since the Falcons receive the Texans' second-round pick from the Matt Schaub trade, they will also make a selection between 16th and 19th in the second round, pending tie-breakers.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the league has unveiled the 2008 draft order, and there's a clusterfudge for the third pick.

Four teams -- the Falcons, Raiders, Chiefs, and Jets -- have 4-12 records.

The Jets fell out of the mix first, because their strength of schedule was 0.523, based on the fact that the Jets' opponents were a combined 134-122 on the season.

The Falcons, Raiders, and Chiefs had identical strength of schedule -- 0.516, based on a combined opponents' record of 132-124. S

Because the Raiders finished fourth in the AFC West behind the Chiefs (due to their record in common games), the Raiders will pick higher than the Chiefs. So the Falcons and Raiders will flip first. If the Raiders lose the toss, the Falcons will draft third, the Raiders will draft fourth, and the Chiefs will draft fifth.

If the Raiders win the toss, they'll draft third and then the Falcons and the Chiefs will have a coin toss for the fourth pick.

It's unclear, however, whether it's a good thing or a bad thing to have the third pick. The slotting process dictates a big contract in the three hole, especially since the fourth pick in 2007 (defensive end Gaines Adams) did a deal that some think was worse than the contract signed by the fifth overall pick, safety LaRon Landry.

So "winning" the third pick might actually not be a victory. Based on the 2007 contracts, the best bet might be to have the fourth pick.

When/how will they figure out who picks between the 7-9 teams? I'm curious as to where the Buffalo Bills will pick. I know it's somewhere between 9 and 16 but there is a big difference there. Can anyone help me out with this?

So, where does the NFL find a 3 sided coin?

on a serious matter.......how do they do this?

best 2 out of 3 coin flips?

rock, paper, scissors?

pick a number between _ and __??

(and I wonder if the NFL Network is going to televise this process....You KNOW that some fans would watch it live if they could!!!)

Actually, it would be smart to televise this process LIVE during halftime of one of the Playoff matchups.

The Chiefs have to pick after the Raiders. So the Falcons and Raiders flip, winner gets the 3rd pick. If the Falcons win, it's Falcons-Raiders-Chiefs.If Raider win, Falcons/Chiefs flip for 4th pick. From PFT: The Falcons, Raiders, and Chiefs had identical strength of schedule -- 0.516, based on a combined opponents' record of 132-124. SBecause the Raiders finished fourth in the AFC West behind the Chiefs (due to their record in common games), the Raiders will pick higher than the Chiefs. So the Falcons and Raiders will flip first. 'A coin flip will determine picks three through five in the 2008 NFL Draft, according to Adam Schefter of the NFL Network.Four teams finished 4-12 (Atlanta, the Jets, Kansas City, and Oakland). The Jets had the strongest strength of schedule, so they'll pick sixth. The Falcons, Raiders, and Chiefs had identical SOS. The Falcons and Raiders will flip first because K.C. finished third in the AFC West. If the Raiders lose the toss, the order will be Atlanta-Oakland-K.C. If the Raiders win, they'll go third and the Falcons and Chiefs will flip to determine who picks fourth. The Dolphins and Rams pick 1-2, respectively. '
Disclaimer: Not a Jet fan. How on earth do the Jets get the shaft here by having to go 6th because they played a toughest sked? Am I understanding this correctly?Could you imagine a fantasy rookie draft determined like this? I'd be livid.

The draft is worst to first. It's assumed that since the Jets had the same record with a tougher schedule, they must be better than the other 4-12 teams.

 :mellow:As far as the Chiefs...they GOTTA go O-line early and often. I think they can be somewhat successful with Huard and Croyle as long as they get them some protection and a healthy LJ and Kolby Smith. Sprinkle in a WR and some DB's and they should be an above .500 team next year.

Some kinda are but instead of using schedule, the team that scored less points drafts first since they scored less they are considered worse than a team with the same record who scored more.
