Biggest upset in football history? Biggest upset in major sports history?

Discuss.

Not even close to the biggest in football history, yet alone sport history.

No, because the Patriots have been narrowly winning most of the games for a long time now. They look beatable, they just keep escaping.

Patriots looked very special the first half of the season and have just looked like one of the annual very good teams the 2nd half of the season and in the playoffs. I'm sure some would view it as a huge upset who set their opinion on them during the first part of the season and haven't taken the 2nd half into account. I don't personally think it would be close to the Jets-Colts upset though.

Really? This would be a MUCH MUCH bigger upset than Jets/Colts or Patriots/Rams, which are the only two games I can see even giving a Giants Superbowl win this year a run for the money.A Giants Superbowl win would EASILY beat any of these:US Hockey Team defeating the RussiansBuster Douglas defeating Mike TysonBobby Fischer beating a computer...really, anything you can come up with.If the Giants somehow pull out a victory in this Superbowl, I would honestly be more shocked than if a flying saucer landed and all the aliens looked like Eli Manning.Giants beating this Patriot team would be like a little league team beating the Red Sox in a 50 game world series. It just won't happen.

You people are insane. This Giants team has absolutely no chance against this Patriots team. None. A Matt Cassell led Patriots squad would beat this Giants team.

note: I'm old enough to have seen all of the games and seen all of the hype around what you consider to be bigger upsets.

A Giants win would be miles more shocking than any of the ones that have been mentioned.

Biggest upset in Sports History was the United States Hockey team's win over the USSR at Lake Placid. It's the equivalent of LSU vs. the Patriots; very good college players against grown men who were world champions. The most unbelievable result ever.

Second biggest upset: Buster Douglas' knockout of Mike Tyson. Douglas was basically a club fighter, while Tyson was thought invincible.

Every NFL team has comparable players, so no matchup between any NFL team could ever rival these historic upsets.

Wow...I guess I'll let you guys have your delusions, but damn, this Giants team is going to get slapped down hard.

Look, the Giants nearly beat them a month ago and let them off the hook. Lay off the hyperbole.

For one, Jets over Colts in SB III would still be bigger.
villanova '85 ncaa over patrick ewing. cant touch it
Miracle on Ice down?
#1 in my book. Hell, the Russians beat the crap out of the Rangers earlier that year and hadn't lost in nearly 20 years and had won eight of the last 9 Olympic Gold medals.
My 2nd choice was the Jets over the Colts and 3rd, Notre Dame snapping UCLA's 88 game winning streak in 1973.

You're a moron. The Giants almost beat the Pats a month ago. How can a 3 point different in a rematch be considered a greater upset than the Miracle on Ice or any of those other ones?

I bet they do.And I assume, and hope, that evryone who is in the business of predicting NFL game will too... just like Tampa, ust like the Cowboys and just like the Packers.I'm not going to crow, becuase Giants fans like they're team to be the underdogs, but the Patroits look very beatable. Not that the Giants will beat them, but the Pats look far more beatable at the end of the year than their record indicates.

Well now that's not being very excellent.Bill Belichick didn't have two weeks to prepare for the Giants then. He does now. Beatdown is unavoidable.

First of all, the biggest upsets have to be situations where there is a total disparity of talent, so no teams from the same league are ever going to be in the "biggest upset ever" category. That's why the Miracle on Ice and Buster Douglas are worthy of this title. A college football game might also make it in, again because of the disparity of talent; something like App. State's defeat of Michigan this year (though there are probably better examples.)

Second, for this same reason, Superbowl III will always be the biggest upset in NFL history, because people at the time were convinced there was a disparity of talent between the AFL and the NFL. In the case of New England vs. New York, no matter how lopsided you believe the result of this game will be, the fact is both teams select players from the same talent pool. I myself think it will be a very close game.

I see what you're saying, but I think there's an incredible difference in talent between the Patriots and the Giants. The Giants best player (Plaxico) would only be the 4th best receiver on the Patriots. That kind of talent disparity can't be ignored.

If this dude actually thinks a Giants win would be > than the Jets over the Colts, he obviously doesn't know the history of Pro Football. The Jets were a 17 pt dog and the lowly AFL was considered bush league at the time. The Colts had just destroyed Cleveland 34-0 for the NFL Championship and was rightfully a huge favorite over the AFL Jets.

Don't forget Duke beating an undefeated UNLV team in '91... the year after the Rebels beat them by like 158 in the finals.

Went off at 19 in most places.

Yes, that's true for some places, but the official line was 17.

Look, just because someone told you that was a bigger upset, don't believe the hype. I've been through both situations, seen both setups, and a Giants win would be leaps and bounds greater than Colts/Jets.

I didn't take into account that you were a Colts fan. Yes, to you it would be a bigger upset. I don't have a dog in this Giants/Patriots matchup, so I can see it very clearly.Giants do not have a prayer.

A Giants win over New England would be about as surprising as any other game when a 13 point NFL dog won.
That's where the line STARTS
The Pats-Chargers line started at 15 1/2. Then it went down to 14. And they won by 9.They haven't covered many spreads over the 2nd half of the season.

The Ravens had them beat and screwed up. Philly, Indy, Giants all could have won. Pats could have been 12-4 without it being very surprising at all.

Some just seem to remember all the blowouts in the 1st half of the season, but they've been very beatable for a couple of months now. Do I think they'll win the Super Bowl? Yes. Would I be shocked if they didn't? Let's just say I'm not about to lay 13 points on them.
