Jerramy Stevens Article in Seattle Times (1 Viewer)

PFT.com posted a link to this article. It's long, but if you have time to kill, worth a read. Really mind-blowing stuff what some of these guys get away with.

Like most of you, my vague impression of Stevens is a typical malcontent, but until you read this article you really don't comprehend how much this guy has gotten away with -- and to think he *still* hasn't pissed away his last chance.

Unreal.

Stevens sounds like a real scumbag.

It sounds like this guy has lived his life feeling like he could get away with almost anything... it's too bad more discipline, along with some deserved jail time, wasn't enforced sooner.

"He is a big, powerful, speedy tight end," said general manager Bruce Allen. "He has had some off-the-field issues that have hampered him a bit. We had a very serious talk with him today. I think Jerramy Stevens is a good young man."Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren had vouched for Stevens, Allen said."Sometimes," Allen said, "you have to give people a chance."
Holy crap. I'm embarrassed to be a northwest football fan. I never knew all these details before. This is completely shameful. I don't know what else to say.

I agree with you in that I had a vague impression of Stevens as a moron, but I didn't realize what a true scumbag he is. He belongs in jail. It's amazing he is still allowed to play football for a living.

Michael Vick is in prison for two years while scumbags like this walk free. Unbelievable. And what Vick did was awful, but this guy is a class A scumbag

Speechless.

This is one of many similar stories that could be told about a few other rich/famous/powerful people...

Anybody got any Cliffs Notes for us lazy readers?
Beat up a kid in HS with a baseball bataccused of rape in college, never charged for the crimeseveral DUI's & sprinkle in a hit and run or twoHe's not even close to the worst the NFL has to offer, either.

Pathetic. That's what you get when people keep overlooking character, covering up for misdeeds and looking the other way.

I think faux-bear summed it up pretty good:
Code:
Stevens sounds like a real scumbag.
But why?
How about drugging a virgin and raping and anally raping her? The evidence seems pretty credible to me...and most of the investigating police officers, but as sad as society can be sometimes, politics prevailed and he walked.
And yet Ricky Williams gets suspended multiple times and is labeled the "bad boy" of the NFL for smoking pot = RIDICULOUS & ABSURD !!!

Interesting that the article quoted the standard coash-speak refrain we always here from NFL coaches, "We do believe in ..."

Kinda what stuck out to me too. Clearly, Stevens is practically a lower lifeform. There's not really that much sense with arguing that. Speaks volumes about the folks that continually cover his ### though. And for the record.....private defense attorneys that roll like the guy mentioned in that article are probably some of the biggest scumbags on the planet as well(apologies to the one decent one that I'm sure is going to chime in after I post this.). The cat that UW apparently has on retainer seems like he's a real, quality individual. "Sure, I'll defend your alleged rapists, assaulters, and whatever. Just gimme a couple hundred a pop and some sweet seats for next fall's games. Go Huskies!!"(Yes, I realize I'm totally breaking out my Conclussions Mat. I don't care. I'll bet I'm pretty close to being right.)

I've never met J.Stevens, but I know a few who knew him outside of football.

"Headcase" was the first thing that comes to mind. The story sounds like it would substantiate that description.

True, the ultimate objective of most politics is money, in this case it had to do with the schools reputation (money generating reputation).

Good point. Kinda funny when you look at these two as individuals and that Stevens has only served one game of suspension.

I know its a long article but I urge everyone to read it - he is a true pile of human trash and its an embarrassment that he is in the NFL

 There is a tremendous disservice done to a lot of these guys the first time their incidents emerge and nobody does anything about it.Was it really so important for Stevens to attend UW on a scholarship that his high school couldn't suspend him, for example? Was his life going to be ruined? Would it not have been good for him to lose that scholarship and have to earn his way back into the major college ranks - perhaps from a junior college or a Div. II school - instead of smoothing over his problems? He's a bad guy, and there's no guarantee that that would have changed anything about him, but it disgusts me when people so willingly look the other way when there is something so trivial as athletic talent in the mix. It doesn't work this way legally, but it makes them complicit in my mind in the later offenses that guys like this commit.

It goes beyond that for me. There are plenty of headcases out there that don't harm other people. This guy's dangerous.

I found this kind of fishy too. A player can’t get paid more then fair market working an off-season job at say a car dealership cutting grass (i.e. $1,000 an hour to mow the lawn), yet a player can pay far less then market when getting represented in the court of law (i.e $200 for full representation). Seems to me there is a major NCAA violation in this case to boot.

Posted this before I started reading it. I may get time to finish it, but I get the message already."Headcase" is not nearly strong enough.

 Have you read the book "Pros & Cons"? It's about 8 years old, but if you think Stevens' behavior and background are unique for an NFL player, it may open your eyes a bit.

This was in 1998 - "According to (authors) Benedict and Yaeger, 21 percent of NFL players -- more than one in five -- have been charged with at least one serious crime, including two murder arrests, seven rape charges, 45 counts of domestic violence and 42 charges of assault and battery."

I think outside of all of Stevens reprehensible actions, what troubled me the most was that from HS to College to Pros, it seems there was always a high level coach who was willing to vouch for Stevens character.

I mean, who wouldn't vouch for the character of a guy who wrote this email:

While investigating Stevens, Parker dug up an e-mail Stevens had sent to one woman he'd slept with at the UW. The e-mail said:

"i know that you are not going to beliewhat i have to say especially after satterday night but when i got your e-mail today i laughed a first but then it started to sink in and my heart started to break as i read over your words.

"i realize that i have [messed] up and I want to talk to you about being with you and how i can make it up to you. this is not a joke i want to have you in my arms and know that you are mine and ythat nothing that i have done or [a friend] has said caould ever change the way that i feel about you. when i think back to the night that i spent with you by ourselves i wish that i would have done one thing and that is, i wish i would have put ... "

Stevens then describes, in explicit terms, an anal-sex act he wanted to do to her. He closes with: "you whore dont ever utter my name again."

Stevens shared this message with a teammate, who called it a "funny ### e-mail." The teammate, when interviewed by a detective, called the woman who received the message "a typical football groupie."

Parker says the e-mail was "very disturbing to read." She placed it in her investigative file and interviewed the woman who received it. The woman broke down in tears.
Now that's high character. Am I right, Neuheisel?

Are the Seattle police this lax in prosecuting all rape charges? Or just those rape charges where money and prestige of a university (or other entity) comes into play?

I'd be interested in knowing from our Seattle bretheren what reaction this article generates locally. I'd love for some prosecutors to have their careers end because of this. Also, does anyone know whether Scott Linehan has been questioned about the supportive letter he wrote on behalf of Stevens yet?

If I was this girls father, I don't think I could keep from commiting an assault and batterie with intent to murder of my own.

The same thing occurred to me. The impulse to not only castrate Stevens but also to break every bone in his knees, legs and feet would be enormous.

Seriously, I had that impulse while reading that article....I can't even imgaine the father, I can only hope this woman recovered from all of this.

Put this guy in jail; right - BUT, lets look at the problem in all sports; this starts with US. Yes, I pay for season tickets to the Rams, pay for DirecTV Football package, go to cardinal games for many years. If WE stop giving the owners OUR money so they can pay so much money to these guys, there maybe some changes, even if the train has left the station. This really stats in grade school with the special treatment that jocks get ;and expect to college and than to the Pro's. Most sport cities know of problems with their local players. St. Louis etc; Leonard Little-; Faulk with many Kids from how many gals and more. The city got tired of hearing about Kurt Warner and all the great work that he has done ON and OFF the field.

anyway, Go Giants

If I was that girl's Father, I'd have no problem spending time in jail just so that ahole would never set foot on a football field again.

the real problem here is that coaches will do ANYTHING to win. Anything. They will defend rapists and talk down serious crimes because they have a stud athlete that helps them win games and keep their high profile jobs. Jesus the list is forever long. How many women did laurence Phillips toss down steps and beat up while at Nebraska? But dude sure could run with that piece of brown leather in his hands. Its really pathetic that there are human beings like jerramy Stevens who have been given everything their whole lives and never had to stand up to a single thing because they are good at sports. "it was really hard to sit out the first half." right you piece of garbage
