Lewis defends Chad again

By GEOFF HOBSON

Lewis

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis defended Chad Johnson again Wednesday and said the club won't even think about discussing trading its disgruntled wide receiver.

In an interview in preparation for next week's NFL scouting combine, Lewis also said the team is currently still in a 4-3 base defense but indicated that could change in the next month as personnel changes.

Lewis targeted both front lines as top priorities for the offseason and said the Bengals are going to use their franchise tag in free agency but wouldn't say the candidates. He did say that free-agent defensive end Justin Smith and right tackle Stacy Andrews are key players on each front. Without getting specific, Lewis said progress has been slow in negotiations for long-term deals with the club's own free agents.

Citing his commitment to re-energize the running game, Lewis said the Bengals are going to look at running backs in the upcoming draft. He also said the Bengals are going to change their tact in pursuit of a tight end prospect. Because it is so difficult to find college players that can both catch and block, Lewis said they'll try to find athletes that can first catch but have the ability to develop into blockers.

"They can stop the presses, quit killing trees and move on to other things," Lewis said of the Johnson media orgy. "There is, at no point, anyone in the Bengals organization who has ever uttered anything about trading Chad Johnson. Nor will he be traded.

"Our player, we know, is very passionate about the game. He continues to play at a very, very high level. He's been very, very productive," Lewis said. "We're conscious of that. He's been well compensated."

In the wake of Tuesday's Washington Post story that revealed the Redskins' interest in trading for Johnson, Lewis sent a message to old friend Dan Snyder, the Redskins owner, through the front door.

"There is no such thing as behind-the door deals in the NFL," Lewis said. "That will not occur because the team in question is not willing to trade their player. Nor have they thought about trading their player. Nor have they discussed trading their player. Nor will they discuss trading their player."

Lewis hasn't personally spoken to Johnson since the final game of the season, but he said others from the club have. Assistant strength coach Ray Oliver, for instance, spent time with Johnson at last week's Pro Bowl.

Although he wouldn't elaborate on who, Lewis feels Johnson is feeling external pressures.

"It's unfortunate for Chad that he is being cast in this light. It's really not fair. So once again I will go on record in defense of him," Lewis said. "We've had a great relationship. All I want to do is see Chad continue to be a very, very productive NFL player and help us win a lot of football games. That's not going to change."

Lewis said he believes Johnson can come back into the locker room after going public with his trade demands and general overall unhappiness, and cited the case of Michael Strahan's holdout before he helped the Giants win the Super Bowl.

"I think everyone in the NFL realizes that contracts and these kind of things unfortunately can be a big part of what the game is all about," Lewis said. "What you have to do as a football team is you have to learn to put some of that aside and not really worry about those things and you go back to work as a football team and move forward. And that happens in how many cases?

"The Giants just won a Super Bowl with maybe their best defensive player who was contemplating supposedly retirement," Lewis said. "He came back, he didn't get paid any more money and he just played. That's the way it is."

Lewis also denied a story in which a source close to Johnson said that Lewis stopped talking to him in the second half of the season. Even though media members saw Lewis at least talking to him on the field before practices. P> "Any of you who have been around here know differently because you watched it," he said. "Hell, there was a picture in the paper. That was in the second half of the season, right? When it was my fault because he does what he does."

Lewis said he went through a similar problem with perception when head coaching jobs opened up in places where he had previously coached, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, and Washington, and his name surfaced even though he signed a five-year contract after the 2005 season. Johnson is signed through 2011.

"I wish people would understand. It was the same thing with me," Lewis said. " 'You're going to Pittsburgh, you're going here, there.' I have a contract, and nobody is going anywhere. This is not pick up my Pixie sticks and move on. It doesn't work that way. With any of us.... It isn't that way (in the NFL), so I wish people would believe it wasn't that way."

I would say deal the cancer for a bag of magic beans, but the salary cap hit is not worth it. Chad better get a huge contract if he goes the Washington. His stats will go down at least 20% going from Carson to Jason Campbell. Chad gets no yards after contact.

He needs to shut up, play football and honor his contract. Is he the fourth highest paid WR in the league? He is certainly not one of the four best.

I'm not saying he isn't a great WR... because he is one of the best right now... but it's just not worth it anymore. I'm sick of hearing about it. I always defended his stupid antics because he works harder than anyone, but now I hate him. Yes, the cap hit will hurt this year, but then next year it'll be like he never existed. If someone offers something decent.. take it and run... get him out of the locker room.

Looks like Marvin is a bit more cautiously optimistic on the Odell front these days. According to the Bengals website they are hoping that he'll be reinstated in time for the March offseason stuff. Article here Like Henry, he's got a really short leash but would be a massive improvement at our LB spot if he can even stay even with his rookie-year production. The new DC ought to a be big plus in keeping him in line as well, I hope. Interesting that they seem to be "definitely" franchising somebody. Given that his number would be a fairly reasonable $4.4m I would think that it'd be Madieu but who knows?

Man I just hope something good falls to us at #9. Ellis is probably a pipe dream but Ghouston wouldn't be out of the questions either. I really think that if we can't get a lineman that we should trade back, but of course sometimes that's easier said than done :goodposting:

Glad you guys got the thread moving :hophead:

Since the mock draft was brought up, I would be interested to hear more on the guy you took in the 3rd, Guion. He looks like a reach in the 3rd round from what little I have read, especially if a DE like Robertson was still available. I realize Robertson is small for DE, but he rushes the passer and with JSmith possibly out, I like DE more than DT.

Great news on the Odell front, having him back would really help the LB corps, tho I would imagine we see him move outside.

Im so sick of hearing about CJ (Crying Jackass). Dont let him fool ya, this is all about money. Marvin showed he has Chad's back. Hopefully he will #### and start worrying more about making plays when it matters, like not stepping out of bounds on purpose 3 yards shy of a first down when it is 4th and 17.

Also read that in addition to finally looking for a recieving TE in the draft this year, that the primary focus of the offseason is rushing Dlinemen and help along the Oline. Marvin mentioned looking at RB's in the draft, but I see little reason to do so. They have a bunch of them. Time to say goodbye to Rudi, let Watson be #1 and hopefully finally get Christina Perry back on the field. Not encouraging news on the Kenny Irons front, as Marvin eluded that they are unsure of his status, which is concerning considering at the time of the injury they anticipated he would be ready come spring. I hope they find a way to keep DeDe around.

My offseason hopes are that they dont do anything stupid, namely paying Justin Smith franchise tag money (again) to accumulate 2 sacks on the year, I would rather see him go. I would hope they would really focus on keeping Stacey Andrews, even if you have to overpay until he is starting, you cant let that talent go. Steinbach last year should have taught them that lesson. I cant decide what I would like to see happen with Madieu. I like him, but he really hasnt been the same since that shoulder injury a couple years back.

As far as the draft is concerned, I would love to see Vernon Gholston drop to the Bengals, but its not looking good at this point. If I were the Bengals, I would focus as much as possible on DT/DE. The young secondary is looking alright, the offense is pretty well set, save the Oline issues. The Oline staying healthy next year will go a long way to determining the team's success.

ps - Thank God Chuck is finally gone!!!

To be completely honest, I know very little about him. I looked at need, and some rankings across the innernets and went with it. Mayock has him listed as his #5 DT. I considered DE and OL here as well.

If they could get a mid-first rounder for CJ, then do it. I just don't see anybody giving up a high pick for a TO waiting to happen.

If Ellis or Gholston dropped to the Bengals at #9, I would be doing the Pee Wee dance.

Madieu needs to go if he is looking for a big contract. Paying Justin Smith big money would be a dumb move. Both players did not give the performance to match their perceived value in the free agent market.

If Odell comes back the defense is already improved. The guy is an idiot and probably crazy, but he is the best LB on the roster and a game-changer. He is the type of guy OC's have to gameplan against and opponents always wonder where he is on the field.

RB is a mess. It sounds like Mavin thinks Rudi will be back to his old production level. Perry is SUPPOSED to be recovered. Irons is probably not going to contribute in 2008. The team seems hesitant to look at Watson as an every down back permanent solution and Dorsey is barely mentioned. I hope they don't do something stupid, like use a first day pick on a RB.

Andrews should be interesting. Someone may throw a lot of cash his way. If so, the Bengals may need to let him walk. They have the depth to cover his loss.

Couldnt disagree more. They are getting thin along the line now. Willie is getting old, and as we saw last year, there were a bunch of injuries along the line. Letting Andrews go would be a horrible mistake. They should have learned a lesson from allowing Steinbach out while franchising Justin's sorry ####.

x2.. they need to get on that yesterday.

Looks like Andrews was tagged. Hopefully something can be worked out long-term. It certainly adds to the versatility of the Oline with Whitworth and he being able to play 2 spots on their side of the line. I thought it would be Madieu for financial reasons, but I'm ok with this.

I'd like to think that the Bengals were smart enough at this time last year to see that Andrews would continue to develop, that the team was set up for a deep run in 2007 with both OT healthy, Palmer ready and Thurman coming back. I'd like to think that the front office thought Smith would be a vital part of a post-season run and that Andrews would be ready in 2008 to take Steinbach's place. I'd like to think that the team considered this a Steinbach for Andrews and a 2008 compensatory 3rd round draft pick.

I'd like to think that.

Especially since I was sort of thinking the same thing this time last year.

This is a year too late and was clearly the wrong decision. Let's hope it works out anyway.

Looks promising on the Odell front - Goodell said he'll decide if he'll be reinstated by training camp but at least he's able to do all the offseason work now.

They also are supposed to be talking with Housh's agent today about an extension which would be good news.

Site's been blessedly Chad-free of late. Hopefully the situation has settled down, the idiotic musing of Mr I Hate The Bengals notwithstanding (see #8)

Bumped, since I'm sure my Bengals will be tearin' it up at the start of free agency...

Oh and since Madieu's gone.

-QG

They resigned Dhani Jones :bag:

He was very good coming in to a tough situation (like 3000 injured LBs). I didn't realize he had over 100 tackles, which is amazing when you consider we didn't sign him until mid-September.

Meh. Somebody had to make the tackles. Jones hasn't been an average NFL talent in years. Really no different than the countless number of retreads this team has tried to make do with over the past five years.Pray that Brooks and Thurman are anchoring the LB corps in four months.Good for Madieu by the way.

BENGALS BAG ROGERS by Michael David Smith

Michael Smith of ESPN.com is reporting that the Detroit Lions have traded defensive tackle Shaun Rogers to the Cincinnati Bengals.

No word is out yet on what the Lions got for Rogers, who had been on the trade block for several weeks and had been rumored to be heading to the Jaguars, Jets and Broncos, among other teams.

For the Bengals, acquiring Rogers gives them just the kind of big defensive tackle head coach Marvin Lewis has always employed in his defense. The 340-pound Rogers is in the mold of Sam Adams and Tony Siragusa, the huge defensive tackles who played for the Super Bowl-winning Ravens team on which Lewis served as defensive coordinator.

As for Dhani, I'm not saying he's a superstar, but he was steady, reasonably priced, and showed some leadership. I think he's a good piece and I'm trusting we got him for a reasonable price.

Yeah, Im hoping this means they think either Pollack or Thurman will be back, hopefully both.

Wow. Let's hope for more Tim Krumrie than Sam Adams.

Bengals should get a third round compensatory pick for losing Steinbach. Not a bad deal to move one for Rogers.

Doesn't necessarily take Ellis out of the mix for the first rounder, but widens the range of possible targets.

Now let's go get Crumpler. :goodposting:
:no:He'd be too much money for what he is now (as opposed to what he was). Just hope this means we'll look at a pass-catching TE in round 2 possibly.-QG
Probably so, but I didn't think we would get Rogers either. I know Crumpler isn't what we was a few seasons ago, but he would be a huge upgrade to what they have now.

Btw, the Lions were certainly motivated sellers. Rogers is due a $1m roster bonus tomorrow. He has 3 years left on his current deal.

Updated from Bengals.comBengals are open to renegotiating as well.-QG

Big deal for big man By GEOFF HOBSONFebruary 29, 2008 Updated: 4 p.m. An NFL source confirmed Friday the Bengals have swung one of their biggest deals in history by acquiring Lions defensive tackle Shaun Rogers for third- and fifth-round picks. The 6-4 Rogers, listed at 340 pounds, turns 29 in two weeks and has three years left on his contract but the Bengals are open to renegotiating it. A two-time Pro Bowler who led all NFL tackles in sacks this past season with 7.5, Rogers has been the subject of heated trade rumors ever since he left the locker room last season saying he wanted a change of scenery from a Detroit club that is 50 games under .500 since it took him in the second round of the 2001 draft. As early as this morning he was supposedly involved in a three-way deal wth the Broncos and Jets. Rogers is due $4.25 million this season, $5.25 million in 2009 and $7 million in 2010. Rogers The Bengals hope he's the dominant run-stuffer they've sought since drafting Dan Wilkinson No. 1 in 1994. He could be a nose tackle in a 3-4 or play directly over the center in a 4-3 or, as one long-time Lions observer said, "he could play fullback. He could play anywhere he wants. At 340 he can tomahawk dunk." Rogers has battled weight concerns over the years, but he is just two years removed from back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2004 and 2005 and is had a hellacious first half of the 2007 season. He capped it off wth a Defensive Player of the Week performance against the Broncos with 2.5 sacks and a 66-yard touchdown return.

Just what the bengals needed... well that and some LB help... WHO DEY!
Somehow my gut is telling me that we'll be getting Dan Connor in round 1. Whether or not that's at the 9 slot or possibly on a trade down is a different question.-QG

I dont know if its a great move, but I think there is a lot of upside there. He is a beast when he wants to be. They just gotta make him want to be.

So this takes DT out of the 1st rd equation. Id love to see a move to get up to get Gholston. KC needs OL help. I wouldnt be crazy about losing any of our depth, but cant make an omelet without breakin some eggs.
