I got sick of waiting for someone else to start this.

A few topics to start things off.

- The draft

- FA

- Cuts

- Resignings

Here's what I'd like to see. Sign Justin Smith from Cincy the moment FA's can be signed. He's still not over the hill as he'll be turning 29 at the end of September, he's had 7 or more sacks 3 times in his 6 years as a pro, he's only missed 1 game in his 6 years, and with his non-stop motor he'd be an awesome complement to Kampman. Also, it potentially takes DE out of the draft equation freeing the Packers up for best CB available.

I'd really like to see the Pack work the defense in the beginning of the draft. There's going to be some good OL depth in the middle of the draft but CB, S, OLB, and DL would all be decent choices in the first 3 rounds imo. I'd love to see them get a DB that also has decent potential for returning kicks.

Other thoughts/hopes for FA and the draft?

I don't see the Packers going after Smith. If anything they'll try to retain Corey Williams at DT. I think what we saw this year was an injured Cullen Jenkins. My suspicion is that we'll see him perform much more like he did in 2006 next year. Trade that makes too much sense for me is trading Corey Williams to Oakland for Nmandi Asomugha. The Raiders have CBs, and the Pack is deep on the DL. Franchise each and trade their rights. Won't happen, but maybe it should.

Reasons?

1) Ryan Grant is not as good as people percieved in the second half of the season.

2) QB play, people are writing off Favre for that second half vs the Giants. They think A. Rodgers will be fine due to his one game vs Dallas. How many QB's have had one great game? Remember Rob Johnson had like a 3 game stretch at Jacksonville, which gave the Bills the thought that he is a franchise QB so they traded a 1st for him.

3) Oline play. Yes the OT's are vets and solid, however they aren't performing the way they once did. I don't like the interior lineman other than Colledge, who I think eventually could develop into a stud.

4) jennings is a stud, but Driver is near the end. Jones showed potential, but can he fill that void.

5) They can't afford Corey Williams, so who will fill that void...Harrell?

6) CB's are old and were definitely exposed in the playoffs. They are solid, but how long before they have that huge drop off? They also don't have much depth.

7) They have a bullseye on their back. They aren't going to sneak up on anyone.

This is not accurate. They can afford him, but why overpay for a guy who is not a full time player? When asked to play more extensively this year, he proved he couldn't do it. A solid DT, but he will be overpaid by someone else. And this is the reason the drafted Harrell. We don't know how that will work out yet, but my guess is Harrell is the guy they want to take some of these snaps.

I think if anything the running game will be improved as the guard position will be upgraded either through adding another player or internally through the increased improvement of the current 5 man rotation (Spitz, Moll, Colledge, Coston, Barbre). Add to that a full training camp for Grant, the return of Herron (who is better than Morency), improvement of Jackson, improvement and competition from the fullback position and the potential addition of another back. This team is so young in regards to the running game at rb, fb, and guard. 2.)Favre is still a top 10 qb. He will be back. If he retires, Rodgers may still be the best qb in a divsion with Grossman, Jackson, and Kitna. This offense is predicated on letting the wr's do the work. That helps to limit the potential for qb mistakes.3.) Already addressed o-line. This team will improve from within. They have a collection of guards and may draft another lineman. Still the second best o-line in the division behind Minnesota. 4.) Driver was a pro-bowler. He was reliable and still has a year or two left. Jones will be a year older and shouldn't hit the wall. Robinson may not be back but Martin will continue to improve and a very underrated Carlyle Holiday returns next year. Will compete with Detroit as the best wr group in the division.5.) Jolly was splitting time with Williams before he got hurt and if they don't retain Williams, they will have a rotation of Jolly, Harrell, Pickett, Muir, Jenkins (on passing downs) and possibly Cole. Thompson believes in the d-line being the strength of this team. You can pretty much guarantee they will draft another d-lineman this year. Williams is solid but certainly not worth what he may get paid. The Packers have the money but do they want to commit to him longterm. I don't think they should or will sign Smith. They have enough money tied up in the line as it is. I agree that the Packers need to find some db depth but I think they will most likely sign a FA and draft a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round. This team needs to win now and traditionally rookie cb's don't produce right away. Thompson chose to sign Woodson over waiting to developing a cb and may do the same thing this year. I would prefer that as it opens them up to draft the best player available again.

I'm still happy about the sweep and the 35 point victory margain.But I was just trying to point out the flaws. Just like the Bears the previous season, when everything looks too good to be true...it probably is.

The Bears got old quick, and decided to change their offensive philosphy and play musical qb's. In addition to that they changed coordinators.

How much money is in the DL? The DT rotation means they don't need a high priced guy, and I believe the DE's come relatively cheap as well. I understand your point about the FA cornerback but the BPA in the draft could easily be a CB at #30. Also, I'm not sure why the team needs to win now (meaning they need to spend $?). It's the youngest team in the division by far and may be the youngest team in the NFL (not sure about that one). And if they want to win now why not add a potential stud DE that would get immediate results? Not a guy you break the bank on like Jared Allen, but a potential value like Justin Smith. I like the earlier suggestion of a trade of Williams for Asomugha but that's just a pipe dream imo. Can someone tell me why Rouse can't take the SS position with Collins in the FS spot? I like the idea of drafting another safety as I'm not a huge Collins fan but do believe in Rouse for the future.

What the Packers have that the Bears don't is youth and a GM that knows how to draft/trade for solid offensive talent that fits their scheme.

I was going over FAs yesterday and was surpised to see Smith's name. I think he'd be a great addition, but as always, it will come down to the price. If Thompson can convince him to take less to play with a contender, I think they sign him. But given how the cap will raise once again and the number of teams with huge amounts of space under the cap, I'd be shocked if he doesn't get big money somewhere else. The Giants and their 4 quality defensive ends will set off a big time spending spree on DEs, both in FA and in the draft.

I don't think they should or will sign Smith. They have enough money tied up in the line as it is. I agree that the Packers need to find some db depth but I think they will most likely sign a FA and draft a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round. This team needs to win now and traditionally rookie cb's don't produce right away. Thompson chose to sign Woodson over waiting to developing a cb and may do the same thing this year. I would prefer that as it opens them up to draft the best player available again.

How much money is in the DL? The DT rotation means they don't need a high priced guy, and I believe the DE's come relatively cheap as well. I understand your point about the FA cornerback but the BPA in the draft could easily be a CB at #30. Also, I'm not sure why the team needs to win now (meaning they need to spend $?). It's the youngest team in the division by far and may be the youngest team in the NFL (not sure about that one). And if they want to win now why not add a potential stud DE that would get immediate results? Not a guy you break the bank on like Jared Allen, but a potential value like Justin Smith. I like the earlier suggestion of a trade of Williams for Asomugha but that's just a pipe dream imo. Can someone tell me why Rouse can't take the SS position with Collins in the FS spot? I like the idea of drafting another safety as I'm not a huge Collins fan but do believe in Rouse for the future.

Based on last year's salaries:KGB-base of $5 million, cap hit of $6.5Jenkins-base of $1.3, cap hit of $3.7Kampman-base of $1.9, cap hit of $4.1Pickett-base of $1.4, cap hit of $2.5They want KGB to restructure his contract but taking 2007 figures into account. These four players had a cap hit of $16.8 of the total $106 million. Add in the additional lineman and they accounted for close to 20% of the total cap.

Add to that a full training camp for Grant, the return of Herron (who is better than Morency), improvement of Jackson, improvement and competition from the fullback position and the potential addition of another back. Isn't it a similar situation as last year? Would you say the Vikings made the correct decision with their 1st rounder even though they had Chester pencilled in as the solid starter? You saw what the Bears running game was like sans TJ this past year. :thumbup:

I'm a big fan of Rouse. The Collins experiment is over. Great, great athlete. Does not have football instincts and has terrible ball skills. He can tackle, that's about it.Rouse has a nose for the ball. If very physically gifted. Love the potential here. He and Bigby could do some damage together, but if Rouse ends up starting, there is a learning curve.As for CB, I don't think it's as dire as everyone paints it. I love Will Blackmon. A ton of natural ability. He has injury concerns, but he can play.I'd like to see another CB added, but the cupboard isn't bare.

Oh geeez, do we really want to go their?No he was not the best offensive player that season for the bears. Benson was even the better RB that season. He averaged the same YPC during the regular season and had the same amount of rushing TD's as jones with about half as many carries.I actually would say that Rex was the Bears best offensive weapon. 3,200 yards and 23 Tds....that was more td's passing than the Bears QB's from the previous two seasons combined.

Trying to compare the impact of Benson vs Jones for the Bears in 2006 is laughable. Why did TJ carry the ball 297 times to Cedric's 157 if Cedric was the better RB? Why did TJ have 36 catches and Benson have 8? Why was TJ on the field 80% of the time? Why was there an outcry from Chicago to keep TJ last year if Benson was better?Are you really going to base your better RB argument from that year on YPC and equal TD's?And Rex was Jekyll and Hyde in 2006 while TJ was the only one that could always be depended on.

Green Bay -- Choosing to protect themselves against the almost certain loss of defensive tackle Corey Williams in free agency, the Green Bay Packers designated him as their franchise player Wednesday.

The deadline for using franchise and transition designations is Thursday, but the Packers went ahead and filed the appropriate paperwork with the NFL Wednesday and the move showed up on the league's personnel wire late this afternoon, according to a league source.

The move all but takes Williams off the market come the start of free agency Feb. 29 and allows the Packers more time to try to work out a long-term deal with their starting tackle. As a franchise player, Williams is free to negotiate with other teams in the NFL, but if a team signs him to a deal and the Packers don't match the offer, the team must give up two first-round draft picks for Williams.

In exchange for having his free agency rights diminished, Williams receives a minimum one-year deal of $6.363 million, which is the average of the salary (in salary cap dollars) of the top five players at his position. Williams has the option of signing the deal right away, thereby guaranteeing him the money regardless of whether the Packers cut him or to not sign it and sit out mini-camps and training camp waiting for a long-term deal.

Until Williams signs a contract, he cannot participate in any on-field activities with the club.

Tight end Bubba Franks received the transition tag in 2005 and missed all of the mini-camps and four weeks of training camp while waiting for an acceptable long-term deal. The chances of Williams missing the same amount of time depend on how far the two sides are apart in negotiations at this point.

The fact the Packers used the franchise designation indicates they aren't close to signing Williams.

Had Williams gone to the free agent market, chances are he would have hit it pretty big. There is a big market for defensive tackles who can rush the passer and Williams has 14 sacks over the last two seasons.

Update: The Packers announced the move a short time ago and released this short statement from general manager Ted Thompson:

"Corey is a good young football player and has been a consistent performer for our team."

In the release, the Packers did not say whether they made Williams an "exclusive" franchise player, which means he would not be allowed to negotiate with other teams in exchange for receiving the average salary (in salary cap dollars) of the top five players in 2008. That figure is determined after free agency is completed and the new salaries are added in.

Chances are the Packers did not go that direction. They'd gladly take two first-round picks for Williams if someone offered it.

They also released Bubba Franks.

No...Benson was not the best RB that season. And he proved this past season that he is a mediocre (at best) RB.Rex...hah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think they will try to work a deal...or may have done this to have time to trade him rather than get nothing for him when he would have left in free agency.

Good move on Bubba. Love the guy, but making too much for what he adds at this point in his career.

Could this pave the way for Alge coming to town?

Glad to see the frachised Williams. Now they can either resign him, trade him, or let him play out the one year and let him go. Right now I think it will be the third option. Franchising him gained the Packers a year of insurance to follow the devolpment of Harrell and Jolly. Good move by Thompson. Releasing Franks cleared about $5 million of the cap so really by releasing Franks they gained Williams.

Why would they need Alge when they have Donald? I could see getting a cheap FA blocking TE but there's no need for a high priced TE that's best days are behind him.

Beyond that, they just got rid of an aging TE with knee problems. Do they really want to bring in another? I like Crumpler, but that is a big concern.
 
Someone mentioned Will Blackmon. I agree. He's probably the most athletic player on the roster and if/when he can stay healthy will be a very solid Nickel back or even starter if Harris or Woodson miss any time.

Someone also mentioned Herron. Herron is not the best 3rd down back on the roster. He's so below average. Yeah, he made a couple plays a few years ago, but there was never any excitement about him. Wynn's better and I'm not sure if he can even make the team.

Williams being Franchised is a good move. This is a sign that Thompson isn't going to make any splashes this year in the FA market once again. He's growing this team and keeping it intact. I love this method. A solid built team that will compete for a title run year after year in a few years. Can't wait until August (and that's not just because we are freezing up here in Wisconsin this winter.)

Totally agree. I like Alge but they seemed committed to Lee as the starter. Alge will not want to be a backup and will want some money. I think the Packers need to look at extending some of their own guys again. Taucher, Jennings, etc. Kampman is up again in 2009.

I think Alge is better than Lee. I like him...but I agree they will probably go for a cheaper FA TE that is more of a blocker as that is Lee's deficiency. A Ben Hartscok maybe....

It's true he's not what he was, but he is still an excellent threat in the middle of the field. People forget how devastating the WCO can be with two pass catching TE's. If Crumpler was signed, McCrarthy would have a field day passing out of two TE sets. He would be able to attack downfield in ways he never could with Franks. That said, I don't see them signing Crumpler, as he will no doubt get more money somewhere else than Thompson is willing to pay. I would keep an eye on Humphrey who went on IR in training camp. The staff is very high on him. It will be interesting to see what kind of an impact he can make.

Too good to be true to actually happen that way.My guess is that TT somewhat lowballs Williams on the long term contract. Not enough to be insulting, but enough so that Williams won't sign anything but the one year tender. He may not report to camp on time over the dispute. However, as someone else has said, this move would buy another year to evaluate Harrell and Jolly. It also maintains the depth the Packers enjoy on the DL for another year. The DL started to crumble after they lost that depth this past season.

Sounds like this is a very good draft for CBs. Adding one with a high draft pick seems to make a ton of sense. I think going the experienced route makes sense as well. Drayton Florence lost his job to Cromartie in San Diego this season. If Frank Walker is on the way out, he'd be a nice signing as a veteran CB.

 
Read about a combine rumor, per Adam Caplan, that the Packers are serious about trading Corey Williams. Hope it's true.......for draft picks.

I picked him in the pre-combine draft and I'm even more on the bandwagon now.....Trevor Laws, DL, Notre Dame, is going to be a value pick for somebody. Had the second best reps for 225 at the combine with 35, just 2 reps less than top 10 pick to be Vernon Gholston. And it was 15 MORE reps than fat Pat Sims, who's projected to go ahead of Laws. Trevor Laws would be perfect for the Packers and he played his senior year at DE too, so he's versatile.

Looking forward to seeing what the DB's do at the combine.

 
With the rise of Flacco, I would love to see the Packers trade out of the first round for someone who wants him (Atl, Mia, Balt, K.C.). Atl has 2 seconds, they could go McFadden and then trade up for their qb. The depth at the Packers areas of need are good in this draft (O-line, CB, TE, RB) and the extra picks would be nice to have. Yes, the Packers have depth but they built this team on competition among the young players. I would love to keep that competition going. They still are not set at many positions in my opinion. Keep stocking the team.

The Packers haven't signed anybody and I still give TT an A + thus far. 2nd rounder for Corey Williams was a great deal.

I think he is going to wait it out and let other teams spend outrageous amounts on overvalued free agents. Then he will get some nice bargains on players that fit their system.

Eh. Not really sure I would be for that, depending on the offer. I think we have really nice depth along the D Line, and KGB, although grossly overpaid, has become a very nice situational pass rusher.

I didn't know we had an offseason thread. Nice! Anyways, I saw the Taylor to GB rumor and I don't see TT parting with a 2nd and a 5th for anyone. You know how Ted likes his picks. On a side note, I keep seeing this Moss to Green Bay rumor popping up. Does this rumor have legs? I just can't see TT doling out major cash for him when WR isn't even a need.

2- I like the trade of that second rounder and a 5th for Jason Taylor. Honestly, I think TT realizes that he's built a solid core of players with the draft, and now may be the opportune moment to grab a few pieces to the puzzle and part with a couple coveted draft picks. Jason Taylor would definately be one of those missing pieces to our team.

3- Moss to GB is strictly a media created rumor. They're doing it because it would be a storybook ending to Favre's career and it sells newspapers. It will never happen. Granted, Driver's play last year was less than the probowl years of past (personally I think Jennings was more deserving than Driver to go to the probowl). But when it's all said and done, we have possibly the best WR group in the league with Driver, Jennings, Jones, K-Ro. Where would Moss fit in there? We can't cut Robinson, he's a return guy we need, and he comes up big. We will most likely lose Ruvell Martin to FA, so maybe we would be in the market for a WR like him. Not sure Moss/Driver starting combo would fit our scheme... even so let's go with a 3 WR set and start Jennings in there and put Moss in the slot- would be VERY scarey. But then you're hampering Jones' development. I think Jones has potential to be better than Jennings.

While I do think Moss would be one piece to that puzzle, I don't think it's a required piece. Right now we need at least 1 starting G (draft I assume since FA isn't too fantastic), a S to challenge our starters, a young CB (draft), and a starting TE.

We have LOTS of money to spend given how many pieces we actually need, but at the same time we don't need to go make an Antonio Freeman move and sign a WR to a huge contract (I think we're STILL paying him...) when we are deep as it is.

I would like to see us do something with that second rounder. Yes, TT loves his draft picks, we all know that as we had 13 and 12 in the last 2 drafts... but we don't need to build anymore, we are just about there in terms of depth and starters. We can find ourselves a LB in FA to challenge Poppinga, we can find a S in FA to challenge for a spot, we can find a TE in the draft (round 3? TEs tend to slip the last few years), we can draft a CB or G round 1... we're set. What's losing a 2 and a 5 when it can land you a probowl stud like Taylor. TT has been stellar thus far, would hate to see him drop the ball when we have so much leverage.

I would like Moss in GB, I just think it'll take way too much money, and it'll eventually catch up to us. Maybe he'll come to GB and we'll be the NE Pats of 2009. Maybe he won't. But regardless we have lots of cap space, very limited starting positions to fill, now's the time to take a few chances. Now's the time to draft some draft picks. Guess we'll see what happens, but I'm not holding my breath. TT always frustrates fans every year by sitting on his hands, so I'm planning on that same frustration this year

EDIT: It just occured to me- makes almost too much sense to trade for Taylor if all they want is a 2nd a 5... Corey Williams and someone of David Clowney's talent (5th round WR we cut last year) for Jason Taylor... a no brainer

1. Agreed.2. I am not getting my hopes up with this rumor just yet...but I would absolutely love this deal. Yes...TT does not like to give up picks. But this is an elite end to pair with Kampman. The guy plays every game every year...and has had double digit sacks 6 of the last 8 years...the two other years he had 8.5 and 9.5. He is better than KGB...who, by the way, they could then try to move to pick up a draft pick somewhere in there before the draft as well.
 
Definitely don't want to give up a 2 for Taylor. He is 33 years old, still an elite pass rusher, but if you run right at him, you can pick up chunks of yardage. KGB is not to Taylors level as a pass rusher, but he is more than adequate on passing downs.

Taylor is a far better all around guy. Much more of a dominant pass rusher than KGB. It would be a big upgrade.And Taylor even would be rotated some with Jenkins at DE to keep Taylor fresh.a 2nd and a 4th is a no-brainer for Taylor.
 
The Pack is currently $24 million under the cap but they have a ton of contracts that expire in 2009. They need to start wrapping up those guys (Kampann, Pickeet, Jennnings, Tausch). I would much rather see us extend and keep the core guys than signing a 33 year Taylor. That being said, Favre's contract will clear $12 million off the cap once he leaves so their is a little room to play.
