Looks like the Titans are prepared to let Odom, LaBoy, Bell and Gage walk, if they want too much money. I agree each of these players is average, and not worth huge money, but that is alot of starters to replace on a team with holes already.

Encouraged by the pursuit of Crumpler - I think he would be huge in this offense.

Definitely need to add a DE in FA (either Odom or another UFA), a WR, esp if Gage goes, and depth at other positions.

In the draft, I think that, other than QB and S, it should be BPA all the way. Other than those spots, and K and P of course, I can't think of a place where we could not use quality depth and/or upgrades.

Thoughts?

WR, CB, DE and depth at DT. TE depth or a Wycheck clone.Let Gage walk.
They just re-signed Gage multi-year ... per Rotoworld ...Titans re-signed WR Justin Gage to a multi-year contract. The Titans view Gage as capable of playing inside or outside, and should probably use him mostly in the slot. Gage led the team in catches (55), receiving yards (750), and scored two TDs in 2007, but speed limitations cap his big-play upside. The 27-year-old has likely peaked as a player.

Hated to see Gage resigned. Would have rather had Wilford if we're going to add a slow, tall guy; at least Wilford can be an option in the red-zone.

I think we're not actively looking to get Odom's deal done now because we think we can get Justin Smith. I imagine Kearse will be an option too, but hopefully as no more than a #3 DE.

Don't want him, but I think we're going to end up with Stallworth at a reasonable contract. Would rather take the upside of Bryant Johnson.

[speculation] Wilford should cost more than Gage[/speculation]If they also pursue Crumpler and a better receiver, keeping Gage was a good choice.

Bryant Johnson is interesting, and could be a good choice, but I believe the staff wants a proven WR, one that can step in immediately and help. I don't know that Stallworth is that guy, and he'll probably cost more than he's worth.

Javon Walker means gambling on knees, so not an ideal option

Roy Williams? Rumors had him available, and there is a connection. :lmao:

Haven't followed the Bucs much, so I'm not sure what he has left, but would LOVE to see Kevin Carter come back to TEN if hes capable of contributing and willing to play for cheap.

*FINALLY* a Titans offseason thread! ;] Gage was definitely re-signed, it's being reported at www.titansonline.com, so it doesn't get much more official than that. Rumors on other boards are that we've also signed Crumpler, and the paperwork has been submitted to the League to make it official before it's announced.

Can't imagine why anyone that watched the Titans last year thinks re-signing Gage is a bad thing. Granted he's not "The Guy", but he played well and Vince needs a familiar face/pair of hands. If that's the last bit of business we do regarding WRs I'll join the chorus, but I highly doubt that this is the case.

Most reports have Smith already signing elsewhere, and there's no reason to think that Odom is definitely gone just because he's reached FA. Even so, you think Kearse and/or Carter has anything left in the tank?

No clue on Carter...if he comes back I imagine its at around the vet minimum.I'm no fan of Kearse, I just expect the Titans will bring him back with a low guaranteed money, incentive laden deal. "Most reports" have no validity at this point in the offseason. Smith will make his visits, and if the Titans want him, they have the cap space to make a competitive offer.Edit to add: I don't think I said I expected Odom to be gone; just don't think there is an hurry on their part because there are options on the FA market at the DE position that interest them.

Other than Smith, what FA DEs do you see as options for the Titans? This assumes, of course, that Carter and Kearse are not starters, nor expected to match the production of Odom and LaBoy. It may prove to be interesting to see what A. Johnson offers at DT (alongside Brown, who can't seem to stay onside!), but at the other DE spot we have Bryce Fisher and Jacob Ford, meaning that it's a true spot of need going into the draft unless fulfilled via FA.

I think I'm one of the few that thinks the Titans will be looking to go DE in the 1st round...we don't need another young WR; I really hope to see that need addressed in the FA market. If they choose to do so in FA, I think Smith is who the Titans would like to fill that LDE spot with. Josh Thomas would also fit what the Titans look for out of that position: stopping the run and providing a moderate pass rush. Should they choose to really pursue a pass-rusher, Bobby McCray is available after a down season in JAX, but had plenty of success in 05-06. He would be good paired with a larger, more-everydown DE in the draft. I expect Odom to recieve less than Smith, but much more than Thomas or McCray...if the Titans miss out on Smith, I think they'll see what the market is for Odom, then maybe look at Thomas.

I was in favor of letting Gage walk, but the reported deal is 4 years, $14m with $6.5m guaranteed. These days, that is a VERY cheap deal for a guy that was Vince's most reliable WR last year. Had no idea he would sign that cheap. I think that is a great job.

If we get Crumpler signed, and a DE (Odom or an UFA), I will consider this offseason on the right track.

:football: I haven't seen a single FA signing where I thought, "Man, I wish the Titans had offered that b/c that's a STEAL." People are getting paid this offseason, and that's not necessarily a good thing.
Losing Bell, Laboy and Odom creates holes. None of those guys were world beaters, and they all got overpaid, but our OL just got older, and we now have a gaping whole at DE. Really wish we would have made an effort to keep Odom.

How did the OL get older? They have been drafting depth for a while. And with regard to the DEs, I imagine they're going to address that either with someone like Kearse or in the draft.

Some interesting camp updates.

So, 10 days into camp here are 10 observations:

Reason to be excited: running back Chris Johnson

Johnson looks like the real deal. He's lightning fast, and doesn't waste any time once he gets his hands on the football. Another plus: he catches passes with ease.

Going into camp I wondered how much of an impact Johnson might have as a rookie. Now I'm wondering how much he's going to impact LenDale White's playing time.

Reason to be concerned: quarterback Vince Young

Coaches say Young has been consistently good and have no issues with his camp performance.

It's a little too early to judge exactly how far he's come this offseason without seeing him in a preseason game. But my take is Young hasn't been that great, especially when passing. He does look faster when he tucks the ball and runs.

Silver lining: defense

Probably the biggest reason Young hasn't lit it up is because the defense has been so good. A unit that finished last season ranked fifth overall in total defense could easily be better this time around.

The front four should be dominant once again, so should the linebacker corps. And the secondary, led by cornerback Cortland Finnegan and safety Michael Griffin, has been especially impressive.

Most impressive veteran newcomer: tight end Alge Crumpler

Crumpler doesn't blow you away with his speed. He doesn't have the body of a tight end like San Diego's Antonio Gates.

But the big veteran sure knows how to catch the football. And he's a load when he runs down the field with the ball in his hands. He's going to make a big difference in the offense.

Biggest flop: receiver Mike Williams

No one should be surprised, or disappointed, that Williams was released less than a week into camp. He had no one to blame but himself.

While Williams lost weight and appeared to be doing all the right things to those outside the team, his attitude and lack of a commitment rubbed folks wrong inside the team. The Titans finally had enough.

His exit gives some younger, more motivated players more of a chance.

Most improved offensive player: receiver Brandon Jones

In his first three seasons, Jones teased coaches and fans with his big-play ability. This time it appears he might finally be ready to deliver on a consistent basis.

He's looked good catching the ball and is doing the right things within the offense. He seems especially comfortable in the slot. It's still early, of course, but Jones looks like a player on the verge of a breakout season.

Most improved defensive player: linebacker Stephen Tulloch

The starting defense returned pretty much intact and there appear to be no real cracks. So Tulloch won't be with the starters but he's made a pretty good case for himself to be on the field consistently in his third NFL season.

He's delivered some of the biggest hits of camp and gives the Titans a great option if one of their starters goes down.

The jury's still out: defensive end Jevon Kearse

When Kearse missed two practices with injuries last week some fans automatically started thinking the worst — he will never hold up this season. Kearse looked good when he returned to action, however, and coaches think he looks like the same guy who made life miserable for quarterbacks his first time around with the Titans.

Of course, Kearse looked good this time last year in Philadelphia but was unable to sustain it. Another year removed from knee surgery the question remains: how will he hold up in November and December?

Biggest myth buster: offensive coordinator Mike Heimerdinger

There was plenty of talk this offseason about a kinder, gentler Heimerdinger, that he'd toned things down compared to his first stint with the team.

Well, that talk was overblown. His intensity is back. He's letting guys know it if they're screwing up, he's just using a little more tact.

Heimerdinger was perhaps showing patience as players adjusted to his offense. By now he expects them to be up to speed and he's less tolerant when they mess up.

Hardest worker: defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch

If I didn't know better I'd think he was a madman, but his practice-field intensity should surprise no one.

Vanden Bosch is relentless every day, every snap. It's not uncommon to see him rush full speed into the backfield chasing the quarterback, and then to look downfield and see him chasing the guy who caught the ball.

Folks around here are excited. Deal is, though, we could be a lot better team this year and have about the same record (10-6). That's ok, though, maybe the refs will whistle LT when he gets stopped in the 4th quarter of 1st round this time.

Kearse -- he's probably going to go 50% of the snaps -- the good thing is that we have some folks behind him.

O Line -- pretty dang good

Secondary -- it has been a long...long, I said...time since the Titans had a secondary this good. Come to think of it, they are much better than at any times since they've even been the Titans.

Chris Johnson -- kid looks like he is worthy of the hype. IF...you have a late round pick to take a flyer on...take CJ. I think he is going to combine for a surprising # of total TDs.

I think Gage will have 1,000 yards and Crumpler about 800.

KVB was told by coach to dial it down in practice vs Rams as he was just dismantling their LT to the point of ridonkulousness.

I'm a little concerned about Bironas' health and Hentrich's production falling off.

So as a Lendale owner -- would it be a good idea to grab CJ a little earlier than his ADP?
I don't think they're values are tied to one another so I don't think it is a must. I would grab CJ a little earlier cuz he's nasty and I wanted to make sure I got him on my team tho.
