No, not that far off at all.Was just having this discussion with a nimrod friend of mine (t8knovr), and he scoffed at my suggestion.
Who would be the top defensive players taken, if you were starting from scratch?
1. Merriman D.Ware
2. Cromartie
Is that far off?
Urlacher
IPattrick Willis has to be in the conversation.
Petty name calling, Gunz forgets to mention that during our conversation that he also stated that the best CB tandem in the NFL is Cromartie and Jammer of the chargers? He balked at the tandem of Bailey and Bly of the Broncos being better. Chime in all those sensible who are not in the Bizarro universe! Was just having this discussion with a nimrod friend of mine (t8knovr), and he scoffed at my suggestion.Who would be the top defensive players taken, if you were starting from scratch? 1. This guy is looking like he is going to be an elite pass rusher and legit 3 down DE. I can see him being the choice.Mario Williams. Young strong side end who can get after the passer. Very valuable.
It depends. If you were picking 5 guys for your team, yes. If a number of teams were drafting, Cromartie might still be on the board by pick 5. No pass rush makes good DB's look average- see Champ Bailey.Edit: I agree that Cromartie is right at the top of the CB list.I agree with many of the names being brought up. Everyone agree that Merriman and Cromartie would be gone by pick 4 or 5, at the latest?
Merriman yes, as he is an animal (my biased steroid comments aside), Cromartie...not yet.....I see way too many DL's that could be more valuable then him at this stage. If he indeed continues on his growth, then next year I might agree. But just too much love given to guys after a few games with INT's and then fall flat on their face the following year.I agree with many of the names being brought up. Id rather have a Tommie Harris / Albert Haynesworth frontGive me:Mario Williams and Julius Peppers and I would rule the world!!!!
thats good if you want a solid defense like JAX. But I like a playmaking defense and with those 2 you can hide some areas that you might come up short in like DB.Id rather have a Tommie Harris / Albert Haynesworth frontGive me:Mario Williams and Julius Peppers and I would rule the world!!!!
FixedGive me:
Mario Williams DeMarcus Ware and Julius Peppers Osi Umenyiora and I would rule the world!!!!
Is that because after you pay him, theres no money left for anyone else?Tommy Kelly.
I guess we're in the minority here. I'd much prefer to be stronger up the middle. You can get around a stud pass rush -- it's why the 46 defense isn't used anymore. Cover corners are nice but I'd rather stop the run and force teams off schedule than shut down their passing game and let them run all over me. Stud DTs are as rare as stud corners.I'll take two of Ngata and any DT/NT named Williams. Haynesworth scares me in the long term.Id rather have a Tommie Harris / Albert Haynesworth frontGive me:Mario Williams and Julius Peppers and I would rule the world!!!!
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this, but I think Tommie Harris is overrated. He's a very good undertackle, but he doesn't play the run that well and is an inconsistent pass rusher. Many of his sacks have come against poor or injured interior lines. If I'm looking for an undertackle prospect, I think I'd rather have the all-around play of Kevin Williams or even a hybrid like Justin Tuck than Harris.![]()

Demarcus Ware easily outplayed Julius Peppers on defense last year.Put me down for Ware, the best player on the Cowboys.Give me:Mario Williams and Julius Peppers and I would rule the world!!!!

I wouldn'twould anyone take Champ Bailey over Cromartie? Cromartie is what, 8 years younger?
Aside from the Patriots, what recent Super Bowl champions used a 3-4?Also with naming ends I am guessing that people rather have a 4-3 vs 3-4.
None, but the Chargers, Cowboys, Steelers, Patriots and Ravens have made the playoffs with the 3-4 in recent seasons.Aside from the Patriots, what recent Super Bowl champions used a 3-4?Also with naming ends I am guessing that people rather have a 4-3 vs 3-4.

That's the same DL that led the Giants to an incredible 10-6 record this year, too, right? The Giants DL is great, but people are underrating the value of a good secondary and good linebackers because of one game.Something the Giants made me realize this past season:In today's NFL, where even the greatest CB in the world can only line up against one WR in an utterly receiver friendly league, a great Defensive Line with a killer pash rush can compensate for good and perhaps even mediocre DBs, who are able to at least capitalize on some INTs.However, even a great CB can not do much to stop an offense when their defensive line does not get pressure.Take it a step further and say you have TWO "shutdown" corners - put a receiver in the slot (Wes Welker anyone) and even that huge advantage is mitigated. But the Giants, with Osi, Strahan and just enough push up the middle, took out the "greatest team in the history of the game" with far less than spectacular DBs.
It's not just one game. Cowboys and Packers as well.Yes, Pierce is far underated, but the Giants secondary, imo, played so well, because the defensive line was a monster. There were plenty of times WRs were wide open - but QBs had not chance to get them the ball. This is not a post to tought the giants, but being a giants fan, I realize that the reason we won a number of playoff games and beat a considerably "better" team in the SB was due to the defensive line. It just dawned on me HOW important a D-line and pass rush are today with the rules set so much in the receiver's favor. Its my belief that you can win far easier with ok DBs and a great pass rush than great DBs and an ok Pass rush. And if you have a weak pass rush, good luck at all. I don't think people are underestimating a good secondary. It's just that the Giants helped people realize that the DLine is the most important part of a defense. The run defense starts with the Dline. They must be strong enough and smart enough to not give ground and even penetrate the backfield. Then, having good to great linebacker and safety play solidifies this. Pass defense is the same way. If you give a QB time to throw, he's gonna find someone open. Sure you need good CBs to make plays and cover the top WRs, but if you're getting consistent pressure on the QB, you can get by without top dog CBs.I still think that someone like Reed or Polamalu could be a first choice for a franchise, but personally, give me Mario or Kevin Williams and let me build out from there. Perhaps it is because all of his sacks came in garbage time when the Chiefs had their big leads.Anyways, I definitely prefer going DE/DT, and that was before the Giants success this year.where is Jared Allen? He led the league in sacks and spotted the competition 2 games in doing so.

I'm still taking Polamalu. That guy can affect a game so many ways.Just two years ago, this thread will be full of Polamolus, Reeds and Sanderses. Now that the Giants won the SB with strong DL, it's all DL named.
