Laveranues Coles and J-E-T-S close to an Extension (1 Viewer)

Having read this I can't help but think this does nothing but diminish the value of Cotchery. If the Jets truly thought he could be a dominate #1, they would not have felt the need to extend Coles. This is particularly telling, because Coles has not been kind when referring to the Mangini regime (as far as working players too hard). You would think this would make them more likely to move Coles, yet it looks as though they will extend him. Perhaps I am just underestimating the value of Coles, but I was under the assumption that Cotchery was surpassing him as the #1 guy in NY. Maybe the contract will be less than I expect it to be making the signing more reasonable, but this strikes me as a bad sign for Cotchery owners.

Good news for Cotchery. It's not like the Jets pie last year reached its potential. If we're talking about two WRs on a team with 5,000 passing yards, then yeah, maybe losing one WR will help the other. But the Jets passing game has lots of room to grow, and Coles helps the offense out immensely.Very smart if the Jets lock Coles up.

Do you mean FF #1 or NYJ #1?I think Cotchery and Coles will continue to both be #1s for the Jets. They have similar but not identical styles of play, and both should be good for five receptions per game if they're healthy. If the Jets passing game improves this season -- a likely scenario -- both should have more fantasy value than they did in '07.In 2006, they had 2,000 yards, on an offense that seems likely to be inferior on all fronts to the 2008 offense.

NYJ #1

As a Cotchery owner, I love this. Coles isn't good enough to keep Cotchery from being the #1 IF Cotchery has the talent some of us think he does. So, at worst, if Cotchery can't beat out Coles, it allows Cotchery to continue to put up his WR 15-20 #'s. At best, if he continues to improve and takes the #1 role from Coles, then he has a good #2 in Coles that defenses can't ignore.

If indeed Cotchery remains as the #2 behind Coles, then we may have to accept that Cotchery may never be #1 material. But again, even in that scenario, not all is lost as it's unchanged from the last 2 years anyway.

I think it would be worse if Coles left and Cotchery became the default #1 by virtue of Coles's exit. If that were the case and he struggled, Cotchery owners would be wondering if it were the loss of a legit #2 WR or simply that he isn't #1 material. At least this way, we'll find out that answer hopefully without losing much production if we're wrong.

I believe both Coles and Cothery will have very similar yardage numbers. Coles, however, will most likely have more receptions and TD's.

depends who is QB - if its Chad he loves Coles especially in th ered zone - KC spreads it out a bit more. Doesn't hurt Cotch at all IMO - may help him.

Good news for the entire offense including Cotchery IMOColes, Cotch, B.Smith in the slot with Franks helping at TE. TJ, Leon and Jesse out of the backfield. Maybe the Jets can score some points if everyone stays healthy and the defense makes some stops. The good news is they play the Phins and Bills twice each. Bad news is they play NE twice also.

The better news would be if the NYJ draft McFadden. They now have a rock solid O-Line with Mangold and Faneca. They brought in Tony Richardson. Stick McFadden back there with T. Jones to keep defenses honest and that passing game will open right up. This offense could potentially turn around 180 degrees a la Cincinnati from a few yrs back or NO from 2 yrs ago.

Not saying I think this is bad for the Jets in any means. It just strikes me as diminishing the value of Cotchery in FF, especially in dynasty. The reason I think this is because Coles will steal more targets than a lesser WR would. Apparently, the consensus is otherwise, so I could be mistaken.

Agree somewhat, but wouldn't Coles also draw heavier coverage to his side and leave Cotchery with a better matchup?

Huh? I already stated above that the Coles signing helps Cotchery. I said even better news would be if McFadden is drafted to join Coles and Cotchery. Yes, Coles should draw heavier coverage and leave Cotchery with a better matchup. I already said that above.

I think Cotchery is still very underated as an NFL wr. Hes still getting better imo, and having Coles there can only help his development. A lot depends on how well the OL protects Clemens or Pennington in regards to his fantasy value. Cotchery is the kind of wr that seems very good in all facets of the game, but not elite in any category. I think his floor is around 80rec 1000yds this year. A solid ppr wr
