Benson's ankle injury could alter draft plans

With unproven second-year pro Josh Beekman and mediocre-at-best seventh-year pro Terrence Metcalf considered the front-runners for the starting OLG job, and journeyman John St. Clair shaping up as the starter at right tackle heading into the draft, it’s easy to see why the consensus among team sources is that the Bears remain committed to bolstering their offensive line with their first pick (14th overall) in late April. But the way we hear it, the Bears’ need for help at running back may be greater than the team is letting on, with rumors circulating that the ankle injury that prematurely ended underachieving featured back Cedric Benson’s 2007 season might actually be serious enough to potentially threaten his career. With the Bears being more tight-lipped than ever regarding injury information, it’s hard to get an exact gauge on Benson’s ongoing rehab. Daily team observers tell us Benson has been a regular at Halas Hall this offseason, but nobody has seen him actually working out. The best guess is that, at the very least, the verdict on Benson will remain out until he actually tests the ankle for the first time in training camp. In the meantime, the Bears are said to have every intention of addressing their need for RB help in the draft — but probably not until the third round, where they think they could still find quality help. However, if Arkansas hotshot Darren McFadden somehow falls through the cracks in the first round of the draft and is still available at No. 14 — a scenario our draft insiders believe is entirely possible — our sources suspect GM Jerry Angelo and his crew might have to think long and hard about possibly switching gears.

Blessing in disguise?

At least Ced got himself a nice contract before he washed out. Can't feel too bad for him.

Holy crap the Bears offensive team is just a mess. I can't think of any of their offensive skill position players who would be anything more than a backup (at best) on any other NFL team.

As bad a Benson is, a gimpy Benson has to be even worse.

What a disaster.

I don't wish injury on anyone. But I think Benson is a bust and his career was threatened by his poor performance way before the injury.

(the other) Adrian Peterson could have some value this year. Quietly had 900+ total yards and 50 + catches last season and only started 5 games.

Interesting situation if true. It increases the probability that if Chicago drafts a 3rd round back, he will end up as the #4 rookie in dynasty drafts.

While I don't wish that kind of injury on anyone, if it is true, at least it means Angelo can't stick his head in the sand (of course, that's probably because it's already stuck somewhere else) and say "I spent a high first round pick on Benson, so our RB position is fine". Well, he could still say that, but at least it would confirm that he is completely delusional about the state of the Bear offense.

Cedric Benson, Confirmed: Running ability could be career threatening.
Bensons' head could have fallin off, and the Bears would still need to address RB in the draft. Too bad they have 18 other needs that are more important. Tomlinson couldn't gain 100 yds behind that O-Line with those awful Qb's keeping DB's honest.

Hijack, but Tomlinson did pretty well in 2001 and 2002 where the Chargers were about as piss poor team you could find.

I hope its not true EB, or "Benson_will_lead_the_way" will tell everyone for the next two years what a stud Benson would have been if not for the Injury.

What sucks more? Benson, or the fact there are people rejoicing a potential end of a career?
Dude has millions so I don’t feel bad for him. I would never rejoice over an injury ending a career. However if true and as already posted it would give the Bears a real reason to draft or trade for a back that could be a little more handy. For two years I've made no secret that I thought Benson was a poor RB. Great physical talent, but reportedly a complete head case. A RB's best tool as with any NFL player is his Brain and attitude. I'll take a Curtis Martin who I think over achieved and was no where near as talented in pure physical skill as Benson IMHO, but knew how to find the hole and read a Defense. Just like Montana who was never the greatest athlete compensated by being a football smart QB. Every dog has his day and from time to time Benson almost looked like the back drafted out of Texas, but most times he just didn’t have the IT factor. So if its true the dude gets to live the good life and relax with his cash, good for him.

You know those guys in dynasty leagues, we constantly rebuild. The guy with 5 1st round picks because he started the year 0-2 and wanted to build for the future.

There has to be someone out there who drafted Benson, Caddy, Brown and thought to themselves "Man I'm set at RB for the next 8 years!". Crazy that 3 top 10 RBs might not even be starting week 1.

You're a player or you're not, and draft position doesn't have much to do with it. And for the record I thought Benson would be the best of the 3. He was an awesome goal line RB in college, and a true work horse.

I had the strongest feeling I've ever had about a very highly ranked player when I felt Benson would be a bust. Not that that he doesn't have some talent, but he never had the head to make it in the NFL. When a guy comes right out and says he'd rather win a personal award that have his team beat it's biggest rival, that's a HUGE red flag. That tells me a guy lacks heart and will choose what's best for him over what's best for his team. As far as his talent, he's got talent no question. He was never flashy, but he had the physical ability to be a good RB and was a workhorse. When Vince Young became the QB it helped him put up some huge numbers that exaggerated how good he really was (look at Charles with and without VY). I remember thinking back in Selvin Young's freshman year that Selvin was the better back of the two, but Benson blew up after that then couldn't beat out Charles.

If this is true, with the Bears picking 14th, at what point would you think they'd trade up to get DMac if he's there?

6th? Jets? (TJ)

7th? Pats? (Maroney)

8th? Ravens? (McGahee)

9th? Bengals? (Johnson)

10th? Saints? (Bush)

11th? Bills? (Lynch)

IMO, Chicago would pull the trigger before the Bengals pick. I could see them taking DMac if he's there, if 6/7/8 didn't trade down...

The Bears do not move up in the first round of the draft, period.

I don't think Kevin Jones or Musa Smith would quell the hearts of the Chicago faithful after having such high hopes for Benson. DMac certainly would.

If Bears draft a rb early, someone should be shot. They have too many holes to fill. They should sign KJ and once healthy let him take Benson's job. Dont rush him back b4 his whole body is ready. I've been recovering from multiple knee surgeries and I can tell you your whole gets out of sync with any kind of leg injury and I think that makes athletes more like to hurt another part of their body if they are not 100%.

They should sign KJ , Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah Ah AH AH AH .And then end up with two first round RB picks on the IR around week 5 or 6. Guys please stop this KJ BS, the guy is worthless he cant play three games in row without getting a season ending injury.

Earl Campbell did.
Cool, 1 out of 1000.
Priest Holmes did OK. That's just the RBs.
roy williams...derrick johnson
Priest Holmes was a backup, he didn't receive ANY hype neither in Texas or Bal. The question wasn't who performed well but which lived up to the hype. I'm fairly sure there are more bust than there are those that lived up to what was expected of them. The jury is still out on Roy Williams, he's only had one top ten season............he's pretty over-hyped player at this point too. Some have Calvin Johnson ranked higher than him in Dynasty rankings.
