Rookie RBs POST DRAFT RANKINGS (1 Viewer)

Tecmo

Footballguy
1. McFadden (OAK) - good situation, maybe Kiffin can use him to his strengths like Reggie Bush. Good line and lots of rushing with young QB. Solidified as top back

2. Jonathan Stewart (CAR) - not a bell cow with Deangelo Williams, but definitely a chance for Stephen Davis-like carries. John Fox loves to pound the rock

3. Mendenhall (PIT) - death of FWP today. It's not the Pittsburgh line of old that Willie greatly benefitted from, but it's still a potent offense with good skill players. Maybe Mendenhall falls depending on your views of FWP, I like to think this is Mendenhall's team by season end... RB is a young man's position

4. Forte (CHI) - the situational pick will be Forte this year. Cross your fingers you get Portis and not JJ Arrington. Maybe you're the patient type that can wait for superior talent, but waiting sucks. I want value now!

5. Kevin Smith (DET) - His only competition is Tinker Bell and Calhoun. Has a realistic chance to be the workhorse on a team that's looking to balance out the passing game. Situational pick #2 unless you're willing to wait it out for better talent like Felix Jones.

6. Chris Johnson (TEN) - wow, all this team wants to do is run. there will be carries for Chris, it should be noted that Lendale is only averaging 3 yds a carry. Maybe Chris can spread them out a little bit, open things up. Add some catches and you have some modest value right now. Chris is a better dynasty pick as he needs to bulk up a lot. He gets this spot because he at least offers some immediate value.

7. Felix Jones (DAL) - change of pace back, needs an injury for an impact. MBIII is a free agent next season. I'm pretty sure Dallas will pay MBIII, but there's a chance. The additional draft choice of Choice makes me think the chance is bigger than I originally thought. Felix needs to bulk up anyways and he has lots of room to grow too. Many view Felix as the 4th, 5th best talent, but are you willing to wait it out?

8. Ray Rice (BAL) - McGahee has proven he's a solid NFL back and he's only 26. I'm not sold that Rice will turn this into a committee either. McGahee's deal doesn't get costly until 2011 too. Yeah, I'm not liking this situation at all.

9. Jamaal Charles (KC) - Change of pace back for now. needs to bulk up anyways, doesn't bother me he's behind LJ for now. LJ is 28 and there have been trade rumors in the past. I like this kid a lot, he's been rated a lot higher predraft and rightfully so. I just think his size causes him to drop this far. But I think he plays a little bigger than expected, no one ever talks about his leg drive. His legs break tackles like MJD, he has a future if he can bulk up.

10. Steve Slaton (HOU) - I think Ahman Green and Chris Brown are safe for this year. Slaton could get an early opportunity with some injuries, so you have to appreciate his situation somewhat. He's fast and can cut, but he's too small and isn't physical at all, not a guy to churn out tough yards so I have serious doubts. I could see some picking him as high as 8, but I would let someone else reach for this situational pick, that's just me.

11. Ryan Torain (DEN) - He has a chance to be the guy, warrants a high selection, period.

12. Mike Hart (IND) - Nice spot to land with Keith's legal problems. This line can make anyone look good. This guy only lacks speed, he does everything else. High character, he has a home in Indy

13. Justin Forsett (SEA) - no long term answer in the way. Julius gets dings, so he has a realistic chance at playing time complimenting Duckett. We all read about the impressive Senior bowl, there's some hope here despite his small build.

14. Tashard Choice (DAL) - He had the size thing going. Choice needed a good situation and didn't get it. He is officially buried in Dallas. You need MBIII to hit the free agent market, then maybe he could compliment Felix Jones.

15. Xavier Omon (BUF) - Tough runner who can break tackles. Wright has some competition for backup. horrible situation to be backing up Lynch though. Hoping for a better path to playing time than this

16. Thomas Brown (ATL) - Guy is built like a mini-tank... check out NFL Draftguys TV. Norwood splits carries for life and Michael Turner is fresh and ripe for a workhorse season. I view him as the backup to Turner... Snaillings is too slow.

17. Marcus Thomas (SD) - I will assume Hester is a FB with this pick. Still liking Sproles as the backup, but someone needs to mop up TDs and short yardage if LT were to go down. I have to give the true RB the nod first.

18. Jacob Hester (SD) - FB/HB tweener. Maybe he's more of a halfback if LT were to go down. He could mop up TDs and short yardage. He was very good at short yardage at LSU.

19. Chauncey Washington (JAX) - Decent situation to be 2 yrs from now. I think Greg Jones would take carries if an injury struck though.

20. Cory Boyd (TB) - talk about competition, he'll be lucky to make the roster with Dunn, Bennett, and Darby fighting

21. Jalen Parmele (MIA) - possible FB

22. Allen Patrick (BAL) - STer

23. Tim Hightower (ARZ) - possible FB

24. Lex Hilliard (MIA) - STer

Good analysis although I'd put Felix up two slots.
You're spot on.......the offense is too good to not put him up to 4. Barber is solid, but never in his career has he been the starter.
I think Id take Forte at 1.4 over F.Jones. The draft from 1.4 to 1.7 is going to be interesting as I think opinions will greatly vary while people struggle choose talent vs. oppurtunity more so this year than previous years

Green and Brown are very injury-prone, so Slaton WILL get his shot THIS year. Remember, Dayne and Wali Lundy started 16 games for the Texans the last couple of years. Slaton will get his chance and definitely has more talent than Dayne and Lundy. I didn't like Slaton very much, but being a Texan makes him a top-10-dynasty-pick IMHO.

Yeah, it's a strong situation. I could see someone who values situation greatly maybe taking Slaton at #6. This year really tests your belief of situation vs talent. I favor situation, but to an extent. I guess I'm just not a fan of Slaton, I don't see him making a cut and lowering his head for extra yards. I hope he does it , but I have doubts. I think Choice would of been a much better pick for Houston, I would of jumped on that

11. Jacob Hester (SD) - If LT were to go down, Sproles is the guy as his w15 performance made it easier to let Michael Turner go. Sproles is super small though, so maybe Hester could be in line for RBBC. From what I know of Hester, he's excellent in short yardage situations and that's what I think his role would be if LT were to go down. Sproles would get the yards Westbrook style.

I was surprised as everyone else with this pick. But after thinking it through, I'm excited about the versatility of splitting Johnson out or putting him in the slot as a receiving or rushing threat (like Reggie Bush). He is a skilled position weapon the Titans offense desperately needed and one that opposing defenses can't ignore. I'd look for VY & LenDale's numbers to improve just because Johnson is on the field. For VY, its all about spreading the field, thats when he is so dangerous. I would like Johnson alot in PPR formats.

6. Chris Johnson

7. Felix

8. Ray Rice

9. Jamaal Charles

10. Steve Slaton

11. Ryan Torain (DEN) - I don't know him, I would be talking out my butt. He gets this spot soley on Shannigans priding himself in late round RBs. Travis Henry has a target on his back too

12. Jacob Hester

13. Tashard Choice (DAL) - had a chance to be a good backup, needed a good situation. Liked his size. But he is freakin buried in Dallas!!! Maybe Barber is out? Any other big names in Dallas due for a payday next year?

Torain was a sleeper pick I had out of Arizona State but not a sleeper anymore. He had a knee injury a year ago but has good size 6-1 213. Reminds some of Ahman Green.

1. McFadden - The only concern you should have is off the field.

2. Mendenhall - Good long term situation. Should start shareing early.

3. Stewart - We could see a lot of him or only a little. Long term his odds improve but until Carolina committs, I dont want to. I can only view the current situation as bad.

4. Smith - Tater doesnt even see the field after Jones comes back then Jones is released. My money is on Smith starting in the near future.

5. C Johnson - Small backs are becoming more popular as we see 3 go in round 1 this year. Is the recent success of Reggie Bush and MJD part of the cause? Will Young/Johnson/White = the new Vick/Dunn/Duckett? Or can he be the next "CJ" we talk about by bulking up a bit. I think the former.

6. F Jones - Got to consider not only Barber, but Choice as well. Jones is also underweight. Looks like RBBC back for life - 1b this year and maybe 1a in his future.

7. Forte - This is Benson's last chance. Forte can add pressure to Benson but I wont bet on Forte either short or especially long term.

8. Slaton - He's a little small but in Houston there isnt much in his way. Or did I say that wrong considering Dayne's size advantage.

9. Rice - McGahee lacks 3rd down skills and Rice lacks size. Might be able to bulk up down the road but I'm expecting a third down back here. If Flacco starts, its going to be a long year for both him and McGahee. New coach is a major X factor that could favor Rice.

10. Torrain - A technicality is all that saved Henry from suspension. Shanny wont hesitate to start a rookie RB if he can play. Talented longshot in a good situation.

11. Charles - This is a rebuilding team and Johnson is no youngster. Charles needs to add about 10 pounds though. You need a deep roster to afford him because it'll be a while before Charles can even compete and you gotta expect plenty of competition when/if that time comes. Situations can change quickly but this is messy.

12. Mike Hart - My contribution to the discussion. Keith is in trouble and Indy actually drafts a backup instead of signing one who goes undrafted. I like the track record in Indy and Hart's potential.

13. Choice - He goes to a strong offensive team. Only not expected to be even number 2. Although I could see him a 2b in RBBC.

14. Washington - I'm putting him here. He could end up being the SoD of 2008. Though I've always said that I think Jones-Drew can be an every-down back. JVille has never counted on only one back.

15. Hester - If you are going to be a backup, backup the FF #1. It has worked for many others. I moved him down now because he's probably going to be a fullback at least part time. I could put some more players ahead of him but need to figure out what San Diego was thinking.

Latest Edit: Added a new lowest tier that includes guys moveing down in my rankings.

Here's a quick blah, blah to finish up what I started. good luck with your drafts

1. Mendenhall - PIT likes to run, and with this move, I don't see FWP getting the most snaps

2. Stewart - CAR is RBBC but Stewart will see at least 250 carries

3. Felix Jones - There is no doubt he will see between 130-150 carries, plus catches, and if your league rewards for return yardage he'll be a monster.

4. McFadden - three RBs competing for a spot, and a young QB unlikely to sustain drives.

5. Chris Johnson - TEN will run run run run run, but the carries will be split 3 ways at least

6. JMall - great fit for HOU IMO, Clinton Portis in DEN, possibly, but also too risky to rank that high

7. Forte - no QB, hard to run much, plus Benson is the starter

I don't see much for the rest of these guys except pure backup material

I'm kind of high on Hightower to emerge out of that second list. He could very well score the goal line carries this year, and Edge isn't getting any younger.I think Choice has a long road in front of him. Given they already drafted Jones and have Barber (depending on whether the lock him up), I think Choice has a pretty long road in front of him.

I don't see Mendenhall getting more than about 10 carries a game this year. FWP will still be the main guy. Mendenhall may vulture plenty of TDs though, but we'll have to wait and see. From a FF perspective, I'm not too high on either of these guys.

I think Kevin Smith will be given every chance and he may be a steal in a FF draft.

I like this chicken little mentality with regards to FWP, it's going to make it easier to get him cheap.
Fast Willie is a below average NFL (not fantasy) starting running back . . .
I disagree. I think he's one of the more underrated NFL starting RBs. He may not be as well-rounded as the eternally-underrated Westbrook, but he's more than just a speed guy. He's a great inside runner (which shouldn't be a big surprise considering he learned under one of the best), shows good footwork, patience and vision. I don't think the Mendenhall pick was an indictment of FWP's ability as a starting RB - just the realization that RBs have a short shelf life (especially smaller guys) and looking at how much different their team was after the loss of Parker last year. I'm sure the broken leg is still a concern - and should there be a set back, Mendenhall gives them a mighty big insurance blanket.

1. McFadden

2. Kevin Smith - Rookie of the Year*

3. Mendenhall

4. Stewart

5. Chris Johnson

10. Steve Slaton

11. Ryan Torain

1. Darren Mcfadden(He still gets picked in the top 5 despite his skinny legs, fumbling, and off the field issues. While he is not a sure thing, the sky is the limit for him)

2. Jonathan Stewart(I doubt they picked him at 13 to split carries with Williams. Stewart may be the "safest" pick, i look for Stephen Davis type numbers from him)

3. Rashard Mendenhall(Would have liked to see the Steelers get some Olne help, but the passing game should open up some running lanes for RM. Willie Parker is a much bigger threat to steal carries from Mendenhall than Williams is from Stewart.)

4. Kevin Smith(I know, he didnt have the best combine numbers, i dont care, he is a very good football player, and is in a very good situation.)

5. Matt Forte(I cant see Benson or Peterson preventing Forte from getting the majority of the carries, although i am not completely sold on his talent.)

6. Felix Jones(Dallas liked him enough to take him over Mendenhall. He would likely be my #2 if Barber was not in the picture)

7. Chris Johnson(Will probably never be a full time back, and doubt he ever sees many goalline carries. Has more value in a PPR.)

8. Steve Slaton(Great situation, and i like Slaton, but you cant be that small and slow and expect to be a top RB in the NFL.)

9. Ray Rice(I would have him at #4 on talent alone, but he will need a Mcgahee injury to have much value in the next few years.)

10. Ryan Torain(I honestly dont know alot about him, but he gets this spot by default, i just dont like any of the other backs)

Yes, i intentionally left Charles off, i cant help but to see a Michael Bennett/Tatum Bell type player. Plus KC is not a very good situation for a rookie RB.

Yeah, 3 RBs competing for the role of backup to McFadden. McFadden is light years ahead of the others in this class.
light years is overstating it . . .
So is saying he will be competing with 3 other RBs....
If Jordan hasnt sold his home yet, its because of the housing crisis. Rhodes is competing for a roster spot at this point. If he makes the team, its to help teach McFadden the system. Bell doesnt fit the system. He was a value pick last year and continues as value with his low salary. Can be our short yardage/change of pace guy.Fargas is the only player between McFadden and the starting job. Fargas no longer has McFadden's speed. He doesnt have McFadden's receiveing skills. He never did have McFadden's instincts. Fargas has never been credited with blocking skills, power running, ball security or anything else that might threaten McFadden. The only thing Fargas has more of than McFadden is time in the system. McFadden has two legitimate issues. His character and ball security. Both things Oakland consistantly overlooks. What Oakland has not overlooked includes how well McFadden fits into their system and how much of an improvement he is to their current group of RBs. McFadden's only competition is himself.

I think Fargas runs harder than McFadden. Other than that, there's nothing he does better than DMC.

I'm not a big DMC fan, but he'll have every opportunity to make an early impact.

Oakland is a very volatile situation though. They could have a great offense or they could be a trainwreck of epic proportions.

As a Chicago homer, I'm hearing more and more grumblings that Benson is becoming less and less a part of the Bears plans. He came into last year overweight and not in football shape, and clearly underperformed. Reports are that his injury was worse than first thought. He's behind schedule on his rehab, further justifying the knocks him for his toughness, drive, and commitment. In an interview yesterday, Angelo all but admitted (finally) that Benson was a bust. Benson is on his way out. He may not even be fully healthy by the start the season. They tested out Peterson last year, and clearly he's a decent 3rd down back and nothing more. They may try to get what they can out of Benson this year with some carries, sprinkle in Peterson, and add a healthy dose of Forte. I think it's Forte's job to win at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with 60% or more of the overall carries this year.Remember also, they passed on Brohm and Henne to take a RB in round 2, and had a lot of other holes they wanted to fill as well, so I think he's going to be counted on for a lot, otherwise they wouldn't have invested such a high pick in a RB.

:excited: Almost exactly how I would have them ranked. I'd move Slaton out and move Rice and Torain up. And I'd switch the top 3 to Stewart, Mendenhall, McFadden. Just not high on DMac. Very happy if I get KSmith at 1.04.

I think they are interchangeable Dynasty league to league based on needs and situations after McFadden and Stewart! I would not drop McFadden because of the log jam in Oakland. Just like AP last year things will work itself out over time. And McFadden has already shattered most of AP combine marks. Mr. Davis is an oddball but he's not dumb!

Example, I own Bell in a league. Smith is my 3 for that league! I would not be afraid to move Charles up to 3 if I own LJ. Or Mendenhall up to 2 if I owned fast willie. Just depends.

As always I have my own ideas and I am not shareing anymore about it here because I play with tons of you in tons of leagues. haha

Do any of you think the top ten changed much overall in redraft leagues due to draft?

I got thinking long and hard today about it. Actually I think Addia has best situation of any back! Explosive offense, no one pushing him for playing time, proved last year he can play dinged up. AP seems to be the concious number 1. I dissagree. He still shares time in a weak passing offense. I wouldn;t trade him straight up for AP at this time!

One thing for sure. It's going to be a cloudy look on top rb;s this year. Just as it was last year after LT and LT is no longer what he used to be!

Right, right... Because we saw how that whole splitting carries and weak passing offense thing worked out for him last year.

FWP has been a workhorse with two 300+ carry seasons in a row. Once he broke his leg, the offense sputtered in the playoffs. You could tell that his workload was going down the instance they pursued Mewelde Moore. Najeh could be moved to short yardage and Mewelde is the 3rd down back. It looked like less carries, less receptions, less TDs predraft. Now he has to compete with a young power back with a lesser line coming off a broken leg. It's not looking good if Parker loses some burst recovering this leg. The young guy has a big advantage, might need to churn out yards minus Faneca

6. JMall - great fit for HOU IMO, Clinton Portis in DEN, possibly, but also too risky to rank that high
Slaton went to Houston
Ugh... didn't read across the line right, looking at the draft by position on ESPN. I don't know what JMall will do in KC, and I'm not really high on Slaton in HOU.As for whomever asked about Kevin Smith, I just don't know what to think about DET. And Smith fell pretty far in the draft, for me to think he really has a shot to be anything better than journeyman material in the NFL.
