After 4 rounds, the core and initial strategy,

Who's in the top tier?

Who's got some esplainin' to do?

For my team:

I like MJD this year, even though Taylor is a worry stealing touches. I would have taken Gore, but I liked MJD better than LJ or Bush.

I didn't intend to go RB-RB, but with Manning (whom I wanted), Edwards and Housh going right before me, I liked Brown value wise better than Fitzgerald.

My opinion on the GB passing game this year is that Driver will fade quickly and the young QB will concentrate on his most reliable target, Jennings, instead of spreading to around to Jones and Nelson as much as Favre or a vet would. So I have Jennings a little higher than his ADP.

I like Palmer this year, even with Henry gone and the CJ mess. I think their defense has been a little overrated the last couple of years and I don't think they're getting any better with the loss of Smith and Williams, particularly in pressuring the QB. So I expect a decent number of high scoring games as they play catch up.

Four teams to watch that I really like out of the gate

1.06 - Jeter23 - Frank Gore - RB6 - SF

3.06 - Jeter23 - Laurance Maroney - RB18 - NE

2.11 - Jeter23 - Andre Johnson - WR9 - Hou

4.11 - Jeter23 - Jerricho Cotchery - WR23 - NYJ

Maroney is the key here. He's very likely a RB1 in this league. I think Jeter got two second round picks.

4.07 - Reaper - Ben Roethlisberger - QB6 - PItt

3.10 - Reaper - Earnest Graham - RB19 - TB

1.10 - Reaper - Randy Moss - WR1 - New England

2.07 - Reaper - Larry Fitzgerald - WR6 - Arz

Graham is getting much respect. Great first RB when you have both Moss and Fitz.

3.12 - Pictus Cat - Tony R0m0 - QB3 - Dallas

1.12 - Pictus Cat -Larry "Diapers are off" Johnson - RB11 - KC

2.05 - Pictus Cat - TJ Housmanzadeh - WR5 - CIncy

4.05 - Pictus Cat -Calvin Johnson - WR21 - Det

Every pick has reeked of value.

4.02 - Glumpy - Drew Brees - QB4 - NO

1.15 - Glumpy - Reggie Bush - RB13 - NO

3.15 - Glumpy - Willie Parker - RB21 - Pitt

2.02 - Glumpy - Reggie Wayne - WR3 - Indy

Bush slid too far along with Parker. Last year this would have cost you two early 1sts and two seconds.

2.04 - BSS - Peyton Manning - QB2 - Indy

1.13 - BSS - "What you talking about" Willis McGahee - RB12- Balt

3.13 - BSS - Roy Williams - WR19 - Det

4.04 - BSS - Dwayne Bowe - WR20 - KC

I went with Willis, and to be honest that pick should have been Bush. Now I like Willis and with Cam in tow he's going to be the focal point of that O.

I never take a QB early, never. I wanted to grab Peyton figrueing I could load up on wr/rb while the inevitable QB run came.

Roy and Dbowe and solid 1-2 WR punches.

Fiddles, Master of Timing

8.03 - Fiddles - Matt "Freakin" Forte - RB38 - Chi (8)

Picked right after Benson overserved on the water news

7.14 - Fiddles - Isaac Bruce - WR43 - SF (9)

Picked after Martz reveals the old man is WR1

What's even more interesting is the ADP changes from PDSL to SSL. I think I got both of these guys much later (although I think I did better with Bruce in WSL when I got wind of him being 50/50 to go to SF).

for some reason I think all of the teams in the back half of the draft look strong

from dpeease 9th pick to the end

No surprise that the team with Marvin Harrison is the first to draft six WRs...

Most discussions took place during our draft. Some of us are also pretty guarded with our strategies. We'll elaborate I'm sure after next round.

Thought on my squad - Peyton -

Only rolling with 1QB, now I've never done this before and if the bye wasnt week 4 with 5 other team on bye I wouldnt have tried it. Hopefully he isnt sitting for half of the game at the end of the year, if I get that far.

RB's - I do think that Willis in Baltimore is going to prodcue better than last year, why? Cam Cameron.

IMO, RB2 is spot you can be weak at and still survive, I think Tennesse did draft a WR in round1 this year, he just happens to be a RB. Chris Johnson should add decent PPR value, Selvin Young is young and fresher than Henry, Im not worried about Torian this season, he's more a dyansty pick.

WR's - the meat of this squad- Roy,Bowe,Driver,R.Brown provide a nice solid top 4 to draw from. Bradley has nice upside and A.R.E catches 50 balls.

TE - I debated Vernon Davis vs. Scheffler for quite awhile and decided to go with Mike Martz. LJ Smith provided nice value and I think that the Tuna grabbed Fasano for a reason.

K - two that start

Def - hope to make up points here, Pitt and Philly provide a nice 1-2 punch

Overall - usually I love my squads at the end of these, this one though not so much, I probably wont ever grab Peyton or Brady early ever again.

Just a quick note that my oh-so exciting selection of Dominic Rhodes in round 13 isn't on my team roster in the first post. Thanks.

Quick thoughts:QB: I did not intend to take a QB so early this draft--having targetted my first for round 5--but Brees was the last of the first four that caught my attention. The week 9 bye match gave me second thoughts even then, but the value looked too good to pass on with my next pick 30 plays away. Jamarcus Russell was one of the few plays left at 7.15 that I liked to match up.

RB: Bush should not have been on the board at that pick imo; neither should Parker at his. I feel real good about that pair despite the addition of Mendenhall into the Pittsburgh mix. Shawn Alex could be boom or bust depending on where he lands. Duckett and Buckhalter should get points every week--hopefully when I need them.

WR: Love Wayne in this format. Between the rest, I think I'll get some pretty positive production week-to-week.

TE: Lewis and Clark should give steady scoring, though not high end. I actually think I made a mistake with the Clark pick--was weighing the choice between him and McMichael and had second thoughts as soon as I'd hit 'enter'. Hopefully he'll maintain most of last years production. :hey:

PK: Folk was an accident that worked well, a timely pick right before the major rush on kickers. Tynes might take a few weeks scores from him--but I came dangerously close to padding RB or WR corps at that point instead of covering the bye.

D/ST: Workable. Nothing fancy; nothing foul. I of course hope to see the inspired Giant's Super Bowl defense all year! :D

Overall I've got pretty high hopes for this squad. Maybe that's not such a good thing--sometimes it's the ones I don't like that do the best...Obviously the week 9 byes could be a major speed bump. :D

Here's my squad. Thoughts:

QB - Like Palmer quite a bit this year. I wanted to go with only 2 QBs but missed a huge run of QB2s. I took a chance that Croyle would be the starter all year, right before the news about Thigpen came out. Needing him week 8 is not a good thing. I may be taking a zero that week, although lots of teams have week 8 Bye issues.

RB - Hoped to go with 4 here and get some solid mix of vets and young guys, plus some PPR help. I like MJD alot although I drafted him a couple of picks before his ADP. I still like him better than LJ and Bush this year, although I suspect most people do not.

Very happy to get Ronnie Brown as my RB2. Yes he was injured and yes he has a new coaching staff, but I think he has great talent and will finish as a high RB2 this season. Our main insight on the new MIA coaching staff is Parcells and he is a "pound the RB into the ground" type of guy in general. I'm also not worried about Ricky as I think he is a 5 touch a game guy at best and I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't with the team by the end of the year.

Rudi is a very nice RB3. He is slowing down, but I think the Alexander talk is smoke and that Watson/Perry take a back seat to a still effective Johnson this season.

Washington is an excellent RB4 because of PPR skills and his ability (IMO) to get more carries than most think if Jones trips up. Truth be told, I really wanted Selvin Young here and made a huge mistake drafting Croyle instead of Young at the beginning of a turn. Stupid rookie mistake. :(

WR - 6 WRs, 6 different Bye Weeks, which is nice. I expect Rodgers to lean on Jennings more this season as Driver really slows down.

Coles was a real value where I got him. He should be a solid WR2.

Clayton is a bit of a risk. I expect Mason to slow down quickly this season, but Williams may be the guy to have there. He really lasted a long time in this draft and had I know he'd be available so late, I likely would have gone in a different direction.

I'm higher on Gage than most and have him in several leagues. I think he establishes himself as Young's #1 guy this year, even though that's not quite the same as being Brady's #1 guy. Still should be good for a WR4.

Last two WRs were boom/bust guys. I think you win these leagues with those types of guys sometimes. So I went with Meacham, who was a first round draft pick last season but is now apparently radioactive and Jackson, who I think has a good chance at being NE's WR3.

TE - Wanted Davis instead of Scheffler for the Martz effect, but Scheffler is still a solid TE1. No one liked my Insulin joke though.

Johnson could be in for a surprise season if he can stay healthy. I'm pretty high on the Saint offense getting back to 2006 form.

PK - Like both of these guys. Reed is a little underwhelming most years but he is solid and the PIT offense can lead to scoring opportunities if Ben is consistent all season. As I said above, I like the NO offense and I think the rookie PK is worth it, even though it's a risk.

DEF - Really like the Jags this season and expect a swarming attacking defense if they get Henderson some help up front with the two rookies. Also like MJD on KRs.

The Bengals have sucked lately, but I'm hoping their "new defense" and Keith Rivers can propel them back up to the middle of the pack.

Overall, I really like my team and think I should be in the final 5-6, although I'll need some health and luck to win it.

6.07 - Reaper - Philip "Cry Me A" Rivers - QB14 - SD (9)

After missing out on QB's I liked in earlier SSL's this year and being unsure about a few QB/WR situations I felt I wanted 2 starters by round 6, possibly round 7 depending on the QB run.... and feel I got two good one's here but, I did pay for it - I kinda like the teams that went big on QB early and that was that but, we'll see I went big at WR.

1.10 - Reaper - Randy Moss - WR1 - New England (4)

2.07 - Reaper - Larry Fitzgerald - WR6 - Arz (7)

9.10 - Reaper - Drew Bennett - WR54 - STL (5)

11.10 - Reaper - David Patten - WR65 - NO (9)

13.10 - Reaper - Donnie Avery - WR75 - STL (5)

17.10 - Reaper - Josh Reed - WR Buff

In the earlier survivors I wasn't as sure about a lot of the RB situations with the draft and such.... At this point I had a long list of RB's I was happy with thru round 10 so, depending on how the draft played out I was willing and kinda anxious to go out and bypass RB's the 1st two rounds and try to make it up later.... Almost took LJ in round 1.. In Round 2 I had no choice, my RB top tier was DONE with Ronnie Brown and I got my top 2 ranked WR's locked up.

I feel with Moss and Fitzgerald at the top, all these other guys will do for Bye filler and Slot #3.

I think Josh Reed gets play this year even if the rookie starts - he could be better in the slot anyway... And the STL situation should net points.

3.10 - Reaper - Earnest Graham - RB19 - TB (10)

5.10 - Reaper - Brandon Jacobs - RB27 - NYG (4)

7.10 - Reaper - Chris Brown - RB33 - Hou (6)

8.07 - Reaper - Felix "the Cat" Jones - RB40 - Dall (10)

16.07 - Reaper - Michael Bush - RB58- Oak (5)

My RB crew by committee... Again, this is how my tiers played out with the draft - I would have considered R Brown in round 2 and even thought Maroney might fall.... Chris Brown I don't love and I PM'd lists thinking I was getting F Taylor or L White who both went the picks before mine... Would have loved Chris "PPR" Johnson and I agree with BSS about his reception potential..... I think Jones gets me points every week and is good insurance with this risky crew. Even Bush can surprise. Hopefully Graham is a lock down #1 RB and the rest can battle it out. Funny as I look now - All my risky RB's better last till round 10

10.07 - Reaper - Ben Utecht - TE20 - Cincy (8)

12.07 - Reaper - Randy McMichael - TE22 - Stl (5)

I like these two A LOT and I'm happy I waited. Again, in earlier ssl's I wasn't as sure on late TE's as I was here and there were Te's to be had real late in this draft... Both guys are in situations with WR question marks but, decent offenses. Ben is a converted WR who learned to block and play behind D Clark and could take off - Randy had a down year but, should get back to doing what he does best.. Right after I picked him I read a blurb about Al Saunders telling Randy he's coached Pro Bowl TE's 8 straight years - Bring it on!!

15.10 - Reaper - Robbie Gould - K16 - Chi (8)

Decided to go with 1 kicker... WTF... I looked at the scoring and felt as long as I had one of the top guys, the difference shouldn't be that much.

14.07 - Reaper - New York Jets - Def15 (5)

18.07 - Reaper - Atlanta D

Jets Defense and ST just might score a bunch this year. :lmao:

I'm happy with my team - Tried it a little different. These things usually come down to a good deal of luck and it looks to me like every team is pretty good at this point.

DA is one of the Top 8 QBs, and one of those was a must have for me. His bye is also nice and early, which helps. I expect Rexy to be the starter at least until November, if not longer, so this works well. Rex's roller-coaster performances should mix well with DA. CLE plays Jacksonville when CHI is off and the Bears get a great matchup with Detroit when CLE is on bye.

I said I'd explain the Lynch pick, so now I will. When I took him I knew that I was OK not having another Week 6 bye RB (KC, PIT, TEN) so I knew he was a nice safe pick at #8. Portis was a late bye and I'm not a huge MJD fan in the Top 10 - and I also knew I'd likely wind up with Taylor. FT is a steal, IMHO, as a Top 20 back from last year in the 7th round. Laugh if you like but he's solid with reduced time keeping him fresh. Ahman Green is the #1 RB in Houston (granted, for now) and that's a coup where I got him. Any RB that is penciled in as the #1 going outside of the Top 40 RBs is a great pick. Kevin Faulk should be a nice bonus in PPR. None of the RBs share a bye.
2.09 - Jeff Pasquino - Steve Smith - WR8 - Car (9)

3.08 - Jeff Pasquino - Santonio Holmes - WR17 - Pitt (6)

6.09 - Jeff Pasquino - Joey "He Could" Galloway - WR37 - TB (10)

13.08 - Jeff Pasquino Drew Carter - WR74 - Oak (5)

16.09 - Jeff Pasquino - Demetrius Williams - WR81 - Balt (10)
Starters - Steve Smith, Santonio Holmes, Galloway. I'll take those in a 16-team draft. Galloway was #21 in FBG scoring last year and Top 15 the 2 years prior - not bad as WR3. Smith and Holmes are solid picks as you would expect in the first 3 rounds. Burleson should start and is a cheap WR considering he had 10 TDs last year. Only Reggie Williams and Burleson are relatively cheap 2007 TD studs. I'll hope a repeat performance is in store with him likely starting, as I don't see much from Branch this year. After the first 4, the well dried up for WRs. Just barren. There are some crapshoots who could give you a few decent games, but certainly no locks. If there's one regret here it is not getting WR5 earlier. Gaffney, Battle, Stokley in Rounds 10-11 would have made for a nice WR5.

Williams could be a SOD candidate if the rumors are true that Baltimore will go more 3-wide this year. He certainly has the speed to go deep and put up some big scoring games.

5.08 - Jeff Pasquino -Todd Heap - TE7 - Balt (10)

12.09 - Jeff Pasquino - Jeff King - TE23 - Car (9)
Heap, if healthy, is a Top 5 TE. That's the risk, of course. He could certainly be a nice big target for whomever is starting in Baltimore. Jeff King is the best receiving TE in Carolina, which some might say is not saying much. He did produce well with Delhomme starting, so hopefully we see more of that. I felt I had to grab him there as the TE2s were drying up, but Fasano going in Round 18 almost makes me wish he was a WR5 - but then again Round 12 wasn't so hot for WRs either.
14.09 - Jeff Pasquino - Josh Brown - K7 - Stl (5)

18.08 - Jeff Pasquino - Matt Bryant - K27 - TB (10)
Two stud kickers that were $$$ last year. Mike Herman has both as Top 12 PKs, so I'll take that.
11.08 - Jeff Pasquino - Green Bay "Fudge" Packers - Def5 (8)

15.08 - Jeff Pasquino -Carolina Panthers - Def20 (9)
Honestly I think that Green Bay has a hugely favorable schedule. Two games vs. Rex, Tarvaris and Kitna each. Add to that ATL, TEN and HOU and > 50% should be very favorable. Carolina's a decent Def 2.Overall I like but don't love the team. Seems solid but not stellar.

15.10 - Reaper - Robbie Gould - K16 - Chi (8)

Decided to go with 1 kicker... WTF... I looked at the scoring and felt as long as I had one of the top guys, the difference shouldn't be that much.
I hardly think that anyone in Chicago is going to be one of the top guys in anything. You're going to be putting up a whole lot of 0's, 1's, and 3's throughout the season when everyone else will have 7's, 8's, and 10's. Seven points may not be huge, but is someone like Josh Reed or Michael Bush really going to make that big a difference?

I really don't understand the logic behind going with one K in a league like this...looking at past years' drafts, 17th and 18th round picks rarely do anything, anyway, so why not take some guaranteed points at K (or D/ST for that matter)?

Think Reaper has the best team with Domination, Abrecher and Pictus Cat all having great teams if certain things break their way with certain middle round picks.

Updated to 18.07.

My last update.

If a kind mod could finish 18.08 to 18.16 when BSS updates at the end of the draft.

1.14 - Fiddles - Tom "18-1" Brady - QB1 - NE (4)

11.14 - Fiddles - Dallas Cowboys - Def7 (10)

15.14 - Fiddles - Kansas City Chefs - Def22 (6)

This might be my favorite team....

Top QB, Top WR.. 3 possible starting RB's, Deep at WR, solid everywhere else and 2 Kickers

3.12 - Pictus Cat - Tony R0m0 - QB3 - Dallas (10)

11.12 - Pictus Cat - Shaun Hill - QB - SF (9)

14.05 - Pictus Cat -Brady Quinn - QB31 - Clev (5)

Romo seems like a good value at 3.12. The late bye made me wish for a unspectacular starter in week 10, but Jeff took Rex before I was ready. The rest of the QBs were murky, so I took two flyers in Hill (Martz) and Quinn. The Browns seem to know they have two good QBs, but can't get the price they want for either. Quinn could be traded (Minnesota?) or Anderson could falter with defenses having a year to prepare for him.

1.12 - Pictus Cat -Larry "Diapers are off" Johnson - RB11 - KC (6)

7.12 - Pictus Cat - Chester Taylor - RB35 - Min (8)

12.05 - Pictus Cat - Sammy Morris - RB51 - NE (4)

18.05 - Pictus Cat -Kevin Jones- RB - Parts Unknown (???)

Comfortable group with upside. All seem like they underperformed or could skyrocket if opportunity knocks. The RB3 commitee should get a little to keep away the zero.

2.05 - Pictus Cat - TJ Houshmanzadeh - WR5 - CIncy (8)

4.05 - Pictus Cat -Calvin Johnson - WR21 - Det (4)

6.05 - Pictus Cat - Derrick Mason - WR35 - Balt (10)

8.05 - Pictus Cat - Vincent Jackson - WR44 - SD SUPER Chargers (9)

10.05 - Pictus Cat - Reggie Williams - WR57 - Jax (7)

17.12 - Pictus Cat - Keary Colbert - WR86 - Den (8)

TJ sans Henry and with Chads antics could get even more. Calvin is in the magicaler year 2 with his talent and Detroit might fall behind this year occasionally. Mason seem to the reception no matter who threw it. VJax seem to get it in the playoffs, should continue to get his to keep defenses covering the whole field. Gates won't have to rush back either. Reg W was a value. Keary as the Broncos WR 2 seemed like a good late round flyer.

5.12 - Pictus Cat - Jeremy Shockey - TE8 - NYG (4)

9.12 - Pictus Cat - Greg Olsen- TE16 - CHI (8)

Shockey NYG or NO & Olsen as the best recieving option in Chicago are a fantastic combo.

13.12 - Pictus Cat - Adam Vinateri - K2 - Indy (4)

1st one kicker team ever. Early bye, top talent, began the run, prerequisite to take 3rd QB Quinn in the 14th.

15.12 - Pictus Cat - New Orleans Saints - Def21 (9)

16.05 - Pictus Cat - Cleveland Browns - Def25 (5)

Two defenses. Bush returning. Powerful offenses to keep teams from just grinding mostly. Mostly.

Regret not noticing Houston being available instead of Cleveland.

Guess that's it for the excuses.

Pros: I think I got very good value at the RB position after Westbrook. Henry is being way undervalued, IMHO. I think Shanahan wants Henry to carry the load -- Shanny gets a bad rap for being a RBBC coach, but he's only done that out of necessity. I'll give Henry a mulligan for last year and hope he has no more injuries, suspension appeals, or paternity suits this time.

Alex Smith at 13.04 is sick value. I have zero confidence in Shaun Hill or JT O'Sullivan, and it's a Mike Martz offense for crying out loud. Tarvaris Jackson should be a good backup -- he finished pretty strong in the second half of 2007, has no competition, and has a much improved team all around him.

Cons:

Weak WRs. Marvin Harrison, ugh. I'd like to think that I have enough confidence in my drafting ability not to take big risks that early in the draft, but I guess not. Even if he's cleared on the shooting (and since it's been so quiet, I guess he's not a prime suspect), I definitely underestimated the possibility that he will get tired of rehab and just hang 'em up. Later on, Roydell Williams seemed like good value at the time, but I'm getting bad vibes from mini-camp -- he's still injured, and Heimerdinger is giving everyone a clean slate so he'll have to fight for his starting job back.

Week 6 could be a problem with no TE, but I'm not too worried about bye weeks. I think people tend to over-think their bye week situations around here. I only worry about it if the top two at any one position share a bye; otherwise, no big deal.

Overall, not the best draft I've ever had, but I got lucky with some players dropping much further than they should.

I'll have some more comments on other teams later.

Week 4 will be highly entertaining, with the 1-Guns having both QBs on a bye. Will one go down? Will either have Immunity entering Week 4?

:pokey:

Still, it will be interesting how this pays off.I looked and Peyton and Brady were $$$ way more often than not (over 18 PPG nearly every week), so Week 4 is the pitfall.

The most intriguing thing here is that BOTH of you did this, and BOTH of you have the same week off. Odds are that it could bite one of you here. It may not, but it sure will be interesting to see.

actually pictus may only have 1 starting qb even though he drafted 3

shawn hill and brady quinn are far from locks

was a cool writeup to see the different draft formations

I ran with Big Big and Batch two years ago and won a title. Missing a QB for a week isn't that big of a deal. 100 points is usually good enough to survice well into the year and that can drop sown into the 70s and 80s mid season between byes and injuries. 30 from your RBs, 40 from your WRs, 15 at TE, and 15 from the K and D gets you to 100 and on to next week.
