Player Spotlight: Owen Daniels (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Owen Daniels, TE, Houston Texans

Player Page Link: Owen Daniels Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

2nd season in the league and he puts up 63-768-3. Very good numbers. If the Texans offense can get more consistency maybe he can perform even better next season. Even if he puts up last season's numbers he looks to be a steal at his current draft position.

I like Schaub and Owen Daniels in 08. Daniels made great strides in his second season and I see his improvement continuing. I think that his targets creep up above 100 for the first time in his third year. I think that he presents very nice value currently being drafted as TE #11 and around tenth round in a twelve team league.

Owen Daniels 110 targets 70 catches for 847 yards 12.1 ypc and 7 TDs

This guy went from 34/352/5 TD as a rookie...to 63/768/3 TD in his 2nd year. he has all the tools, and an offense that likes the TE for him to start posting Chris Cooley numbers...heck he's almost there and you have to think he will improve as he gets even better.

I like him for 72 receptions, 850 yds, and 6 TD.

72/850/6TD

50-850 7I may keep him over Crumpler this year.
A) 17 ypc for a TE? I can think of one who has done that in the past 10 years, and he had two very fluky long TDs skewing a low reception total (Dallas Clark, 200...4?)B) With those stats, why would you even consider dropping him? Isn't he a top 5-6 TE with 850/7?

I like Daniels alot, but I worry about how much opportunity he'll have this year. Will AJ being healthier than last year cut into his targets? How about Jacoby Jones?

In NonPPR leagues that would've put him 5th last year behind Witten, Gates, Gonzo and KWII and ahead of Clark and Cooley who tied for 5th.

65/780/7

I don't think his receptions or yards change all that much, but I'm impressed by how much more involved he got in the scoring offense as the 2007 season went on.

young improving TE on an offense on the rise.

65 receptions

725 yards

7 TDs

:goodposting: 3 TD's?
Yep. All three of his TD's were in the last six games.
Aaahhhh
What are you bustin' my balls for here? Your projections are very similar to mine:
70 - 868 and 6 TD's
:coffee:

IF Jacoby Jones plays as many think he can and Andre stays healthy, it would be difficult for him to reproduce his 2007 stats. I think he will but it'll be a challenge.

BTW It must be nice to be a Texans fan and believe ya have options on offense now

Have you read any of my posts? It's sorta what I do.... :hot:That and I didn't realize he scored all his TD's at the end of the season. He is on all of my teams but he was the backup to KWII who was on all of my teams till a few weeks ago.

Fair enough. I'm a big fan of looking at how young players close out their seasons to see if the proverbial "light goes on", either for them, their QB or their coaches. It can often help you find value, and for some reason we've see it happen a lot with TE's. Cooley and Scheffler are recent examples of guys whose late season performance boded well for their following performances, in '04 and '06, respectively. It was also true of Manning and Harrison in 1998.

This seems a golden age for TEs.

We still have the elite - Witten, Gonzo, KW2, Gates

The 2nd tier proven guys - Shockey, Cooley, Heap, Clark

Then we have a slew of TEs with potential to break into the 2nd group (maybe the elite?), Daniels is part of that group (along with Scheffler, Miller, Miller, Olsen, Davis, Lewis, maybe more but those are the guys who come to mind immediately. So I'd be inclined to wait to pick a TE and be quite happy with one of these guys.

Daniels will probably fall more than he should due to this, his lack of TDs, and AJ's "return". While many will see AJ as a detraction from Daniels, and to a degree they may be right, he isn't likely to get as many receptions with AJ around, but his 3 TDs came with AJ in the lineup.

Slight drop in receptions. Slightly more YPC as AJ helps spread the D, but Daniels is the short-reception guru, and more TDs.

55 / 688 / 6; which makes him a pretty decent value right now.

If value falls apart early at the TE position, this guy is my ace up my sleeve. Owen Daniels was drafted as a TE 2 last year and he more than likely outplayed the TE drafted ahead of him on most fantasy teams. This guy may be one of the key players I focus many of my drafts around as I don't like to go TE in the first few rounds unless the scoring system forces you to and there's value there. Daniels proved last year he's ready to make a push to one of the upper tiers at TE and I'm going to draft him confidently.

60 receptions for 690 yards and 7 td's
