Player Spotlight: Marques Colston (1 Viewer)

Zoo York
2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Marques Colston, WR, New Orleans Saints

Player Page Link: Marques Colston Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Colston is an easy top 5 dynasty WR for me. Like his talent, his age, his production, and his situation. Amazing that he started off the season lat year pretty slow

105 1350 12

Colston is one of those players that just seems to do everything well. He does everything that is asked of him and more. New Orleans has a potent offense to help him, and improving weapons surrounding him. If Colston and the rest of the offense can stay healthy, I see great things for him this year.

90 - 1200 - 10

I wasn't high on Colston last year.....thought he may regress like Michael Clayton did......boy was I wrong. Colston convinced me that he's for real......a potential top 5 WR. He plays in a pass friendly offense where he's the 1st option, and benefits greatly from the attention Reggie Bush gets.

95 rec, 1275 yds, 10 TD

I am liking most of the moves the Saints made in the off-season. I'm thinking it will be a career year for Colston this year.

99/1285/13

He's just a cut below the elite receivers in the NFL but he's still really really good. Outside of Wayne and Moss he seems to have the best offensive team around him or at least the most stable. That counts for something.

95 rec.

1080 yards

11 TD

Solid player, hard not to produce in that offense as the No. 1 option with Brees at QB. Should battle it out with Brandon Marshall as the league-leader in targets.

Colston has to be one of the most undervalued WRs in fantasy football. He started the year last year with a bad back and exploded in the second half of the season. He is a top 5 talent.

102/1373/12

He's great but they throw him too many passes in the middle of the field and he's had the injuries as a result.

1,250 yards, 10 TDs, 14 games played.

As a Saints fan I have enjoyed the back to back seasons that Marques Colston has posted. Last year, I was not projecting for him the success that he had because I thought that the Saints would run more than in 06 to look for more balance and to keep their weak defense off the field. Due to injuries to the RBs, they could not do that. I still think that they would prefer to run more. I also like Patten and last year's rookie to improve and the Saints still have not involved the TE a lot.

I will probably be on the low side for Colston, but I see less opportunities for him this year.

Wanting to run the ball and being able to run the ball are two different things. There were games last year where Payton desperately tried to establish a running game with Bush, and it simply didn't work. Thus the ungodly amount of passes from Drew Brees and subsequent catches for Colston. With little changing on the Saints' O-line, I see little changing, resulting in another great year for Colston.105 catches, 1350 yards, 13 TDs.

So you expect Drew Brees to throw for what totals? I agree that running the ball more consistently is going to be their goal, but that will only help the passing game if teams have to stop both the pass and the run. Colston's floor is probably 1100 yards.

We all talk about buy low, sell high and if you did that.......bought low on Marques Colston after his slow start last season, you were a happy owner. Marcques Colston has simply turned into a fantasy stud. His first two seasons in the NFL, he's over 1000 yards and last season catching nearly 100 balls and double digit Td's.

For whatever reason, Colston is still slightly underrated, maybe it's because he plays for the Saints but this guy is the real deal. There's no reason why this guy doesn't have another great season.

95 receptions for 1200 yards and 12 td's

I'm surprised you feel that way. His rookie year he goes over 1000, last year he starts extremely slow and then ends up with over 1200 yards. The only way I see him dipping under 1000 yards is if he gets hurt. He's just too big and now becoming experienced for these NFC defenses to keep him under control.

When he did it as a rookie, I thought it was a fluke. I was certain we were looking at Michael Clayton 2.0. So, to spite me, he went out and adds 200 yards and 3 tds. If anyone still buys the 3rd year is the break-out year, what oh what does this young man have in store for us? The saints are going to pass---they ranked 1st in attempts, completions, 2nd in Yards. Colston's the best receiver, and if Bush doesn't step it up, the best player on the team. He's going to get his, and someone else's.

If you extrapolate the 2006 #s to a full season, he gets close to 1200 Yards and 10 tds

Followed in 2007 with a full season: 1200 Yards and 11 tds

I'd say he's good for 1200 and 10ish...at least

96 Receptions

1449 Yards

13 Tds

The addition of Shockey shouldn't affect Colston much. More likely, it will take away from the other WRs. Colston, Bush and Shockey will be targeted much more than anyone else.

90/1260/10 -- with one missed game.

It should be easier to get open with Jeremy Shockey drawing safeties. I expect they'll fling the ball around almost as much as last year, even though 655 pass attempts is downright ridiculous. His red zone looks (28 in 2007, may go down as a result of having a viable TE option in the passing game, however.

Targets 130

Receptions 86

Yards 1150

YPR 13.5

TD 12
