Player Spotlight: Jason Witten (1 Viewer)

Zoo York
2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jason Witten, TE, Dallas Cowboys

Player Page Link: Jason Witten Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Jason Witten will be money in 08, but the problem is that he is being taken as the first or second TE at an ADP of 44. Last season, he was available much later with similar opportunity. Unless Dallas adds another top notch WR, Witten is a contender with TO for first option in the passing attack. He has a great relationship with his QB, another top flight candidate. He will likely not disappoint his owners. I'll give him last year stats with an additional touchdown.

Jason Witten 140 targets 96 receptions 1152 yards 12.0 ypc and 8 TDs

Jason Witten has great size, good speed and is a very good route runner. Witten also has the luxury of having a potent offense to open things up for him. He has always been able to put up good reception and yards numbers, and last year delivered in the touchdown department. I see more great things for Witten and he should be in the top 2 Tight ends taken in any draft.

88 - 985 - 8 as a conservative guess with a much higher total possible.

I think he is the #1 TE in football right now. Plays with a great QB, high octane offense, and cannot be accounted for with a double team while TO is on the field. He has no injury concerns. SOme will argue Gates but I'll take Witten and assume i am going to get...

80/950/8TD

There also was no clear #2WR for the moment so he should continue to flourish.

I think he is the #1 TE in football right now. 80/950/8TD
I agree with MOP. He is the #1 TE in football. Gates may be a better pass catcher and is SD's #1 receiving option. But Witten is far and away the best overall TE. Its too bad that fantasy doesnt count pancake blocks. Because its a sight to behold when Witten pancakes DTs on Wham blocks like he did several times last year. You won't see that out of Winslow or Gates.Witten is just money. Someone may flash better stats. But he is so darn consistent. He's got about as low of injury risk as you can get. Can't say that about Shockey. Draft him and plug him in. Take your 80/950/8 and go on to the next spot.

The 80 receptions is a lock barring injury.I would expect slightly more receptions and yards. 7-8 TD's is about right.95 rec990 yards7 TD's

 and Jason Garrett ( Dallas OC) LOVES play calling with a TE heavy offense

Terrell Owens isn't the youngest player out there. If his play were to fall off I think it could affect Witten's numbers. There's also the chance that Terry Glenn returns from injury. He's at worst the 2nd best tight end in fantasy football.

It seems like he's been around forever but Jason Witten is only 26 years old. Last season's numbers could just be the beginning of a long run as an elite fantasy player.

The Tight End to own this year isn't named Gates, Gonzo or Winslow. It's Jason Witten. Coming off a fantastic year where he posted career highs in receptions, yards, YPC and touchdowns, (96, 1145, 11.9 and 7) Jason Witten should continue on his 2007 season with the chemistry he developed with Tony Romo. With noone else stepping up to be the complimentary player to T.O., look for Jason Witten to keep doing what he does best, put up big-time fantasy stats for his owners, especially in point per reception leagues. Witten had only 4 bad games as a tight end. Week 2 (2-27), Week 6 (3-47), Week 10 (2-12) and Week 17 (2-24). In every other game, he posted as least 12 points and scored over 15 9 times! I'm projecting another strong season with 85 receptions, 1000 yards and 7 TDs.

Last year: Terrell Owens 141 targets, 81 catches Witten 141 targets, 96 catches

I see Dallas maybe trusting the vets in the clutch with the new RB. Slight uptick for Witten and the vets.

100/1200/8

Could end up the #1 TE. Has a great connection with Romo. Definitely the #2 option behind TO in an offense that is high powered and will score a lot.

85 rec, 1050 yds rec, 8 TDs

Giving credit where credit is due, I believe it was Mr. Dodds who in his " The Perfect Draft" article last year, said Witten is one player to center your draft around. I being a Cowboy fan and also a big fan of Witten did just that and made out very nicely in the TE department.

Witten is no sleeper this year, some may even think he's the No. 1 TE with Gates being dinged up early. Witten has amazing hands and there's no doubt Romo looks for Witten when things get tight. He may not put him the huge numbers he had last season, but expect a top 3 season from Witten.

85 receptions for 890 yards and 7 td's

I hope everyone appreciates what a GREAT player this guy is. So nice to not have to worry about which TE to play every week, and on top of that, he gets better numbers consistently than a lot of WR1's. Not that it matters in fantasy, but he does everything else almost perfectly as well. Great route runner, very capable blocker, a team player about whom you never hear a negative word, etc.

I'll admit it. I have man-love for him. :wall:

i have him on my 2 most important teams this year. Its a massive advantage. He's basically spotting me a 10-12 pt lead every week. I will seriously consider him as one of my 4 keepers this spring. dude is a stud.

I don't have a link. I heard it on the radio this morning. He was scheduled to be a guest on Dan Patrick's show at about 8:30 a.m. Pacific. He called in and told them that he couldn't do the interview at that time, but if they waited 15 minutes until after the MRI, he'd do the interview. Instead, he'll be on tomorrow. They even jokingly asked him to just bring the cell phone with him into the MRI.

Still have not heard a word about this anywhere else.

I don't know what to tell you. This is something that happened unless Witten was just screwing around.I honestly have no reason to make this up. I don't get any joy out of starting rumors. I just thought I'd pass on the information, which came straight from the player in question via the radio. Take it or leave it.

Actually, I can help you out. Here's the interview from the next day (yesterday, 9/30): Witten on his MRI.

:lmao: If you think I called you a liar or something, you read me wrong. Just odd that we haven't heard anything else.

I edited it. You can listen to him discuss it on the link I provided.

Players get MRI's all the time. Guy has left the game in back to back weeks after hurting his shoulder. He's a badass, he'll be fine. They just want to make sure the shoulder isn't f'd structurally.

On the heels of Dallas' loss to Washington on Sunday, Dan welcomed Cowboys tight end Jason Witten to the show.

Witten blew off Dan yesterday to get an MRI on his shoulder, but according to the tight end, "everything's good."

The players were off, but Roy Williams had surgery on his fractured right forearm, and tight end Jason Witten had an MRI on his slightly separated right shoulder.
