2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Mike Peterson, MLB, Jacksonville Jaguars

Each published article will include:

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Peterson has struggled to stay healthy the past 2 seasons, couple that with the fact he’s 32, and things are startin’ to look a bit risky for this one time IDP favorite. Will the loss of Stroud be an issue? Michael C. Wright of the Florida Times-Union doesn’t think so “For the past two seasons, the team often used Rob Meier in place of Stroud, so the Jaguars don't appear to have lost much by losing Stroud.”

A healthy Henderson would be a plus though. Jacksonville could probably slow the flow in the hour glass if they bounced Peterson out to “Will”.

I think … if he can stay healthy, he has couple good years left in him.

PROJECTIONS 97 solos / 36 Asst / 4 sacks / 2 INT / 7 PD’s / 0 FF

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Peterson is going to have a bounce-back (injury-free) season. His injuries the last 2 years have been to his hand and pectoral; nothing chronic or recurring. Prior to that, he proved extremely durable.

While he is obviously getting up there in age, I think he's got 2 solid years left in him. Probably not top 10, but solid nonetheless:

90/30

2 sacks

Never been a MP owner, but I know when he was 100% healthy, he was a beast. He had a couple unlucky injuries, and now that he is back to 100%, he should return to stud status if he starts, which he should. Age will definitely play a part in his production, but it shouldnty make a HUGE impact.

If he plays every game, he will get around 100 tackles, and maybe a sack or 2.

I had Mike Peterson in my dynasty league and traded him this past offseason. The guy could easily post Top-10 numbers in '08, but I was uncomfortable with his recent consistency.

In 1/2 his 8 games last year, he posted 6 or fewer total tackles. In fact, over his past 15 games covering the past two seasons, Peterson has had only 2 double-digit tackle games. Compare these numbers to the 16 games in his '05 season where 8 of his games had double-digit tackles.

Also, Justin Durant is now in the fold at WLB. It'll be tough for Peterson to steal tackles from both Durant and Smith.

2008

85-30

2 sacks

2 INT's

3 PD's

Top-15/20 numbers

I'll predict that he stays healthy, but that he's lost a bit due to age and inactivity.

85/25, 3 sacks, 2 INTs, 6 PD

I feel like he's going to have a big year. None of his injuries have been anything but freak injuries (broken hand, arm) and he's always been productive, even with Smith on the field.

My guess is he'll get a mid-season contract extension with the Jaguars, if anything because they realize they want to have their best 3 LBs on field at the same time, for a long time (Peterson, Daryl Smith, Durant).

95 solos

35 assists

3 sacks

2 INT

4 PD

I'd call him a low LB1/high LB2.
