2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Dare I say "over-rated"?? The guy has jumped from WW trash to the consensus #16 dynasty DB?!?! The Panthers recognized his play and rewarded him with a new 5-year deal, but I just cannot get excited over the guy. If Harris fails to match last year's tackle numbers (76-20) behind a top-shelf LB corp (Beason, Davis, Johnson, Diggs, Connor), he'll have a difficult time posting Top-20 numbers. The guy has never topped 3 INT's or 8 PD's in three NFL seasons. Worst yet, he has one NFL sack to his credit.

Buyer beware. Seller...pat yourself on the back.

Acquired last August in a trade with Chicago for a 2008 5th round pick (Bears selected CB Zackary Bowman). Chicago felt he was expendable after acquiring Archuleta and having a healthy Mike Brown. :goodposting:

Harris is better in run support than coverage, that’s not meant to imply he’s a liability in coverage though. The number that really stands out to me is his amazing 8 forced fumbles last year … unbelievable! This is a testimony of his physical, hard hitting style, definitely an intimidating presence in the secondary. The upgrade of talent, and another year of seasoning at the LB position, could have a negative impact on his tackle numbers. He's not the Carolina safety I'd draft in a dynasty.

The Panther D-line isnt what it used to be, I don't see how Harris isnt in a nice spot to put up good statlines for at least one more year. He probably won't match the 8 fumbles, but this guy can hit.

After being acquired from the Bears just prior to the start of the 2007 season for a 5th round draft pick, Harris was a revelation for a decimated Carolina Panther safety core leading the NFL with 8 forced fumbles and finishing tied for 2nd among DB's in tackles with a (76 tackle/20 assist) line. In addition to his run stopping prowess at SS, he provided an overall stabilizing affect over the entire secondary.

Looking to 2008 the Panthers have made some significant personnel changes in front of him. They hope the acquisition of LB Landon Johnson and drafting LB Dan Connor results in a deep and improved LB unit which will offset the trade of mammoth run stopping DT Kris Jenkins to the Jets. And whether or not they move Julius Peppers to RE full time (my bet is they move him around and use him at both spots this year), they can only expect better play from him this season.

Harris certainly benefited from opportunity in 2007. The loss of Jenkins (their best and most consistent DL by far in 2007) could increase that factor, but my thoughts are Peppers and the LB's will pick up a good bit of the slack. I think the net result will be a push... which will again mean plenty of opportunity for the classic 'in-the-box' SS.

I'm more a believer in Harris' skill set matching the opportunity than I am enamoured by his talent. While he certainly fills the bill as a run stopper, he can be a liability in coverage and has limited ball skills (1 INT, 5 PD). However, the Panthers thought enough of his play to give him a 5-year $13.3 million contract extension. With that in mind, he should be a fine short term (1-3 years) DB2/DB3 due to his role as in-the-box SS. At his very best, he might even have DB1 upside. That said, I don't trust his talent long term. In a dynasty league, I would be leery and view him as a short term DB2 at best.

I like Harris. He is a big guy that can stick (look at his FF's from last season) He also is better in coverage than most think. I would pick him over Benard Pollard. I own both in a Keeper league. Harris was the more produtive of the 2. Pollard is yonger but Harris isnt old either. IMO Harris could be equal to Micheal Lewis in his prime but slightly better in coverage.

bump to try and get some more responses/projections before we write this one up for the website
