Player Spotlight: Jeff Garcia (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jeff Garcia, QB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Player Page Link: Jeff Garcia Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

I remember the success that Garcia had in relief of Donovan McNabb for the Eagles in 06. He followed that up with a decent season for the Bucs last year, although he did miss three games. However, a closer look at the numbers reveals some problems.

Problem #1 - Garcia has already turned 38. He is a short 6'-1" QB that weighs 195 and he doesn't have that escapability like he once had. Ominous stats there.

Problem #2 - Going all the way back to 02, he has never had more than one 300-yard game in a season and one year had none.

Problem #3 - Joey Galloway and Ike Hilliard are getting long in the tooth and everyone else at WR has huge questions.

Everything you say is true, and you also can't discount that Gruden loves to hoard QBs and seemingly remains on the quest to find "his guy." That said, the guy did completely almost 64% of his passes last year, he threw 3x the number of TDs to interceptions and had an excellent 7.5 yards per pass attempt. All things being equal, I'm not sure why being 38 this year should be any more of a concern that his being 37 last year; when he was an effective NFL starter. Now, since we're talking fantasy QBs; it's hard to get excited about Garcia's prospects IMHO. He ranked 18th last year but that's misleading because of his points per game. Adjusting for points per game (Garcia played in 13 games), he was actually 24th among fantasy passers. Hardly the stuff to get excited about in 10- and 12-team redrafts.

Garcia is the perfect guy to get as a backup late if you get a top starter.

Garcia will be decent and most importantly he won't lose you points as he rarely turns it over.

I expect Tampa's offense to be slightly better this year than last year.

In Jeffs defense, the Bucs did add a pro bowl center in Jeff Faine. He is said to be one of the best centers in the league when it comes to blocking for screen passes, so I expect Jeff to rack up quite a few points this way.300/5003300 Yards22 Tds5 Ints40 Rushes120 Yards4 Rushing TDs

Jeff Garcia fits the Tampa Bay offense pretty well. He's good at the dink and dunk stuff and trying to hit a speed guy in stride for a big play. He doesn't turn the ball over and if you throw that recipe in with a good defense, that will get you some wins as a football team.

However, Garcia doesn't have a strong arm and cannot stretch defenses. He is NOT going to throw for big time yardage and the 2nd leading receiver may just be a running back on Tampa Bay.

Garcia was an excellent real life quarterback last season with a QB rating of 94.6, a completion % just under 64, and 7.5 YPA. Those things considered, it's hard to really say he's lost anything involved in his passing ability. His YPC was a pretty sad 3.3, but at 38, mobility is bound to wane. Joey Galloway hasn't lost a step, and he'll be able to get open for Garcia plenty. This is a tough defensive team that likes to run as much as possible. Garcia's probably going to be playing the role of care-taker more so than game-winner, and given the low int #s the last 2 years, he seems to do a very good job at that. The Bucs only passed a total of 490 times last year, and unless someething happens to the defense, it's hard to see that number increasing.

Garcia has been underrated as a QB most of his career, but FF-wise he's now only good for backup in larger leagues/rosters IMO. Be looking at a lot of others before him.
