Favre says comeback talk is 'all rumor'

In a text message to the Biloxi Herald, Brett Favre said reports of his potential return in 2008 "is all rumor."

Favre said there is "no reason" for a media firestorm after numerous reports surfaced that he's contemplating a return. Still, until Favre says publicly that he absolutely does not want to play in 2008 and stops text messaging people that he'd like to come back, speculation about his future will continue. He actually never says that he's NOT coming back... he just says that it is a rumor. Rumors can be true :goodposting:

He didn't say he's not coming back. He just said it's a rumor.

"The story we're bombing Iran is just a rumor"

"Are you bombing Iran?"

And also, he didn't say he's not coming back. He said it's just a rumour. FYI.

GB the Favre-fest that will continue ad nauseum up to opening day if not more. Must be summer.

Anyone know who Owens is playing b-ball with on his driveway???

Thanks for starting another thread on Favre
In case you didn't read the OP, I started another thread because of the title. Rather than bury Favre saying it's just a rumor inside of a thread that says he's coming back, it made more sense to start another thread with the correct title. Got it?

According to the article in Rotoworld quoting the Sun Hearld, he did say he wasn't coming back in 2008."Favre says publicly that he absolutely does not want to play in 2008"

Maybe he's leaving the door open for 2009?

i don't see favre coming back only because nothing good could come of it. all he'll end up doing is become a distraction for the team. i mean, if the Pack didn't have Rogers, then i can see Favre coming back in the "savior" role and the fans would love it. But the team is set and is ready to move on.

"It's over Johnny ... IT'S OVER!!"

Well that was a fun little ratings boost for ESPN and their website. This will probably happen one more time before training camps start, once more during training camp, another time during preason, and probably halfway through the season when Rogers has his first truly awful game.

billy mays herelolthis guy gets more farewell/return talk than the McRib
Cuz Favre announced a press conference, saying "I'll be back"Then the Packers, in tune with McDonalds, said "Favres back....and so is the McRib"I guarantee you the McRib has has 1 less press conference regarding service to their respective employer than Favre. When will people see the emphasis is not from Kiln, MS but from the media in Milwaukee, Green Bay, and or Bristol?!I understand the Favre hate so hold out on that sentiment. Lets keep this #1 about FF, #2 above the belt and #3 about anything other what than Favre has ACTUALLY SAID!! TIA

sorry i just remember favre, on more than one occasion, taking pictures on the field with oline members and such after the last game of the season only to not retire. you are naive to think that if nothing else favre doesnt fuel this stuff like a mother....stop blaming it on the media.

Umm...he did that once...after the Bears game in 2007. He thought about retiring but came back...and announced that before the Super Bowl that year.oh...and the line are the ones who got that picture together...not Favre. And since when is a picture a sign of retirement?I think he possibly has fueled some of it...but 90% of it (at least) is fueled by the media running with anything they hear about Favre because they know it will sell, people will read it, and people will discuss it.

Appropos of nothing, I've decided to officially transfer my man-crush from Brett Favre to you. HTH.

I asked this last year when Mortenson declared Eli out for a month when the Giants staff said he was fine and would play, which of course he was and he did. Can we make a rule that any "rumor" floated by Chris Mortenson not be posted until it is confirmed by three other sources, none of which are associated with him? The guy just makes stuff up. Seriously, of the last 4-5 big stories Mort has broken, all of them have turned out to be false.

That's still 150 less than the number of Patriot threads from last year...

I am more interested in the rumor that Favre asked for the Packers to release him and they said "no".
Why would they?TT is in a no win situation right now though. If he lets Favre come back...what does that do to Rodgers. If he trades Favre or releases him...the fans will kill Thompson. He is doing it right currently. Though, even Mort won't confirm the whole asking for his release thing saying it has not gotten that far at all.

The alternative being let him stay a Packer and earn 10+ million as their new second string QB. When push comes to shove, if Favre ultimately decides he wants back, he's going to get traded to a team that manages to work out a new, 1 year contract with him.

I believe I saw on NFL Total Access last night that if Favre wants to come back, then the Packers must do one of three options:1) activate him2) trade him3) release himI don't think they can just tell him, "no, go away".

 But they can't start him over Rodgers because they'd look foolish for wasting his (Rodger's) and the team's time this offseason, they can't place Favre on the bench due to A. his salary and B. he's Brett Favre. They won't release him because they still take a cap hit. They will have trouble trying to trade him unless he renegotiates his contract so his salary is spread over years so whatever team is interested in him only has to pay a few million for what would obviously be his last year in the NFL.

I really don't know why he would push it. He's made so much trouble already for the Packers, and in spite of his talent he will find it difficult to find a spot on another team that is ready for the Playoffs. Tampa Bay with Garcia wanting a new contract, Carolina to save the wear and tear on Delhomme (Rotoworld reports they're comfortable with Delhomme, I wouldn't be.) Who else is playoff ready and needs a QB? O.k. besides Minnesota because that's simply ridiculous, Green Bay would never trade Brett Favre to Minnesota. I'd have to think that most teams wouldn't want to risk Favre wanting to re-retire in the middle of the season, as well.

At the end of this, I think Favre will back down because he's only got a limited amount of time to make this work, and there is a lot going against it.

Completely incorrect. If they release him, they take a cap hit of his prorated signing bonus since his salary is off the books. Since it is after June 1, it would be $800k cap hit on 2008 and $600k for 2009. http://www.packerchatters.com/team_info/salary_cap/ The cap hit is a non-factor on whether they keep him or not.

Actually they could sit him if they wanted to..they have the cap room and I don't think he would do it.If he is really discussing it...I see it going this way.

You can come to camp and compete for the job, but we really want this to be Aaron's team now. If you are happy to back him up if need be...come on back. If not, you will just be unhappy because we will not release you or trade you.

I think it would be hard to bench a guy who made their year last season and took the team to the NFC Championship based just on principal. It's a good principal, they're sick of being toyed with, but Favre has a greater chance of repeating a performance that they had last year than Rodgers does to create it on his own in his first season.

Where did he expressly say he's NOT coming back? He'll do his best to be back next season, I've been calling it ever since the day he retired. DUDE JUST CAN'T QUIT.

While I don't think it would get that far...I think when he would talk to Ted Thompson to tell him he wished to be reinstated...Ted would tell him he would have to compete for the starting gig and if the coaches determined Rodgers was to be the starter...that their decision would stand and he would be the backup. Not sure how much they are "sick" of being toyed with. Seems more like certain fans are sick of what they perceive as him toying with people.

Where did "he" expressly say he IS coming back?
For the record, I don't think he wants to come back, and if he did, I think he'd only want to come back to GB.]But............just for the sake of discussion, are there any circumstances that GB fans(or you, anyway) would be wiling to see him traded?

Me...no. Personally...if I am Ted Thompson and Favre calls wanting reinstatement. I tell him his options. He can come in and compete for the starting job...it would not be given to him. If Rodgers beats him out he can be the #2.He will not be traded...he will not be released. Then ask him again if he really wants to come back.
