I'm going tomorrow morning. Will try to post anything I see in the Houston offseason thread.
I'm planning to go too. Friends who were going have backed out already... as usual. I have yet to have any of my friends make it to one of these. Though I can't blame the guy who was on call and got sent out to a rig.

I'll be the short guy in the white Mario authentic game jersey (none of that screen printed junk!) I haven't been to one before, do the players generally stick around to sign autographs after the practice?

I have 2 friends that say they are coming, but we'll see tomorrow morning!

Yep, the players do autographs at the end, though not sure if it will be all of them or just a few. The cheerleaders also show up, and they have beverages and stuff for sale.Other comments that will may be helpful if it's your first time... with them all being morning practices the heat won't be as bad but it is still going to be hot by the end of it. The bleachers face to the west and my neck has gotten fried when I didn't bring a hat that would cover it. The railing behind the top row of the bleachers is high enough that if you bring a towel or something like that, you can hang it over the railing and get some shade from it for much of the practice. It's definitely a big help if the sun is out. Easiest way to spot me will be to look for someone sitting on the top row (hopefully) using a Texans flag for shade. Dark hair, full beard trimmed short, white t-shirt with USA on it.

You may want to bring binoculars if you have some. There are three fields side by side, and sometimes the best stuff happens further over. Though even with binoculars you may not be able to see much if that's where they do the 7 on 7s. Sometimes they also let you go over and stand along the sides of those fields though.

They last one I went to, they had printouts of the roster with the player's numbers at the gate, but others didn't have it so I got in the habit of printing one out to take with me.

Thanks for the tips. Was already thinking of bringing the binoculars I take to the games, but now I will put on some pre-emptive sunscreen. Can you bring camera's or will they jump you thinking you work for the Patriots?

Saw on the website that the first 100 fans get bracelets to get autograph's afterwards.

I don't think cameras are a problem... I mean, the cheerleaders are there so you can take a picture with them. I've taken some snapshots of the players and a cool panorama shot of the field with my cell.I'm not sure if they would object to a video camera being there or not. Don't recall if I've ever noticed one.

Saturday July 26 morning practice report

I was down at one end of the field so could see some drills better than others. Not a lot worth mentioning but a few things.

Chris Taylor went down during an 11 on 11 drill. He walked off the field with help. A guy beside me said he saw him later trying to walk it off, but I didn't spot him after that.

Dunta Robinson was on the sidelines but didn't participate, no big surprise there.

(Edited to correct original flip flop of strong/weak side) 7th year LB Kevin Bentley was playing strong side linebacker with the 1st string (Ryans and Greenwood). I believe I also saw him in as the LB in dime coverage once. The 2nd string LBs were Diles at MLB and Adibi and Chaun Thompson. I believe Adibi was Strong side and Thompson was Weak but I could be mistaken.

I was too far upfield to see the line play during the passing drills. The first play I spotted Duane Brown on during 9-on-9 running game drills (which were closer so I could watch the lines), a player rolled up on the back of his legs, but luckily he didn't seem to get injured. The only two plays I really was able to watch him closely, he kicked out on a cornerback well (that was the play he got rolled up on) and on the other it was a run to his far side and he did an ok job getting inside on Okoye (though it was close to a hold).

In the passing game, the offense is without a doubt the better unit. There was a noticeable lack of good plays in the secondary and a lot of guys running open. People should have already been rating up fantasy passing games the week a team plays the Texans, if you hadn't definitely start. This is at best an average secondary with Dunta Robinson in it, and definitely a weak one without him. I didn't notice Molden at all, but quite a few of the corners got beat deep by AJ and Andre Davis both. Bennett and J. Reeves were the 1st team CBs and CC Brown and Demps were the safeties. Ferguson was on the 2nd string at safety, I want to say with Mitchell but I could be wrong on that.

Walters was lining up opposite Walters with Davis in the slot, possibly Jacoby got some reps there too, not positive on that though. I didn't see much from Walters though I was far upfield in the passing drills and he was on the other side of the field a lot. AJ looked incredible like normal. Daniels looked pretty good too. I think Andre Davis is an excellent sleeper pick again this year, especially if there's an injury, he could have a nice year. I believe Bruener was getting a lot of snaps with the 2nd string. No one else really stood out to me at WR.

At running back I didn't really think any RB looked spectacularly better than the other. The pretty much looked even to me except for Slaton. I don't know if it was him, or the fact he was playing with the 3rd unit and didn't have holes or something, but he seemed too many times to just go into the pile for little to no gain. Again, I was up at the other end of the field so I didn't have a great view of what he had to work with. I thought Darius Walker looked a lot better with that unit than Slaton did.

Schaub and Rosenfels both looked pretty good as far as I could tell, though I was focusing on the routes so couldn't tell you who may have looked better than the other.

Jacoby Jones, David Anderson, and one other guy were the ones practicing returning punts. I want to say it was LeRon McCoy but I could be wrong on that.

I was running late and the top row filled up, so not much chance of spotting each other. Good to see they finally put their own banner up there so it's a shady spot now. Though it wasn't too bad today, it hasn't heated up fully yet.If you're going tomorrow morning, let me know and I'll PM my cell number and we can meet up .

Saturday July 26 morning practice report

7th year LB Kevin Bentley was playing weak side linebacker with the 1st string (Ryans and Greenwood). I believe I also saw him in as the LB in dime coverage once. The 2nd string LBs were Diles at MLB and Adibi and Chaun Thompson. I believe Adibi was Will and Thompson was Mike but I could be mistaken.
Hey Greg,Thanks for the report. Bentley was at Will and Greenwood at Sam? That right? Dime coverage, too, eh? That bodes very well for Xavier Adibi getting in the lineup sooner than later.

Yesterday Diles was interviewed re: he was starting in the SAM and backed up by Bently in the SAM. I really doubt they moved Greenwood from WILL to SAM.

 I agree. Just checking to see if GregR had switched them by mistake or if they were trending more toward a left-right thing. The dime thing is still interesting, though, since the Texans have been looking for an excuse to move Greenwood out on passing downs since last summer.

i believe the texans are a left/right team at both safety and OLB. Greenwood has been significantly better than the SLB and played on passing downs so the numbers don't reflect the balance. The coaching staff at various points has used language such as "our LBs (safeties) have similiar responsibilites." I will watch closely in the pre-season to confirm this.

That was my impression in the one game I got to see in 2007 after your post last season.

You're right, I said it backwards. When I first saw who was in with the first string, Greenwood was lined up on Owen Daniels so I made a mental note he was strong side. But now that you make me think about it, Daniels wasn't on the TE's normal side on that play, he was on the offense's left (so Greenwood was on the defense's right). Will edit original post to avoid more confusion on it, thanks for catching it.

Can't add too much unfortunately. Had a late night and didn't get out to the practice until late. It was packed (probably because it was the 1st session) so I hung out in the endzone overflow to watch the linemen. Not sure what to make of Duane Brown yet, the kid has some nice size and seemed to hold his own against Mario fairly decently, but I saw one of the coaches getting on him. The camp report on the Texans website says he was gassed and I concur. Saw him going to get some gatorade at one point and you could see it in his face.

Mario's burst off the line is just amazing to watch. He still looks so thin to me though for his size (damn he's tall,) like he could still add some extra muscle to the frame easily. Okoye looks a lot bigger to me this year, hard to believe he only just turned 21. In one of the drills he was lined up on guard Casey Studdard and just bull rushed the crap out of him. Frank Okam is huge, but was running with the 2nd string. If that kid can put it together he would be a monster on the line. Saw N.D. Kalu on a blitz in the 11 on 11 that definitely would have been a sack.

Secondary is below average to awful, saw Sage make some bad throws that would have been INT's in a real game against a better 2nd-ary. Andre looked like Andre, stud. Offense ran some very nice deep passes based on timed throws. Saw (I think it was Schuab) toss like 40 to 50 yarder deep with Andre Davis on a crossing route that would have been a for certain TD. The pattened Kubiak bootleg was run a few times. The whole defense (including myself) bit on a fake to the left and then Schuab rolled out for a nice 20~30 strike to Owen Daniels. One thing I don't like about Schuab is his passes can sail on him a little bit. He puts the ball up too high sometimes, forcing the receiver to go up for it to make the catch. That can be dangerous at times.

No real comments on the running game. I wasn't real impressed with what little I saw, but I did see Chris Taylor go down and then limp off. It didn't look too bad though. I certainly understand now what so many people years ago used to say about Chris Brown running tall. He looked like twice the size height-wise compared to the other RB's.

Looks to be a quiet night tonight so I am going to try and go out again tomorrow morning. Don't have tickets, but I doubt that will be an issue.

Sunday, July 27 morning practice

This time it was Chris Brown who was the unimpressive running back. Ahman Green, Darius Walker, and Steve Slaton all had multiple very nice runs. I think Walker may become a fan favorite as he has great vision and seems to keep finding holes. I only noticed Chris Taylor being in on one play, late in the practice.

The secondary played better today but it still wasn't great. There were a few times they had everyone covered and there were more dump offs to the running backs as a result. In some of the drills that were just skill position O against LB and secondary, there were plays where the offense wouldn't have had as much time as it took for someone to come open. Andre Johnson was the best player on offense, as always, but even he didn't have as good a practice as normal. I don't recall anyone else standing out enough to mention. I recall last year thinking that CB Fred Bennett needed to improve his tackling, and there was a play or two this time where I thought he should have been able to get a hand on a running back and he missed him much like I remember from lats season.

The pass rush seemed to be getting a decent amount of pressure on the QBs. Cochran, going against Salaam, had a bit hit in the backfield on a RB (ETA: From Texans website, it was Chris Taylor). I didn't think Schaub or Rosenfels either had a particularly great day, though Schaub perhaps was a little better in my opinion. 2nd year QB Shane Boyd was getting the snaps the third team (at the time I had thought it was rookie Alex Brink, but got their numbers confused) and he looked pretty bad. Concentrated on watching rookie CB Antwaun Molden for awhile. He was doing pretty decent most of the time. Though on one play Andre Johnson almost faked him out of his jock strap.

Diles was back on the 1st string at SLB with Demeco and Greenwood. 2nd string was Thompson, Adibi and Bentley. Nickel was Demeco Ryans, with both Greenwood and Adibi getting some snaps with him on 1st string.

D Line, first string was the usual one of Mario and Weaver at DE, with Okoye at DT... I'm assuming Travis Johnson was the other, I don't think I ever actually noticed him this practice though. 2nd string was Colvin and Cochran at DE with Maddox and Zgonina at DT. Colvin replaced Weaver at DE on the 1st string nickel package.

Cornerbacks were Bennett and J. Reeves again. Molden and Fletcher were the 2nd string, with Molden getting the starts with the 1st team nickel package.

I was watching the secondary a lot during the drills so don't have a lot of commentary on specifics of the line play other than I thought the D-line was getting pressure. Buckna and I met up this time to watch practice together, he may have watched the line play closer and be able to give some impressions there that I can't.

Oh, and to correct an earlier post, the guys fielding punts were Jacoby Jones, David Anderson, and WR Mark Simmons (I got him mixed up with LeRon McCoy in my Saturday report). Fletcher joined them this practice. Most of the plays were just the players at the line practicing and then the punt returner catching the punt without running it back. There were a couple of times they played out the full play though. Jacoby and Fletcher both had a long return on those.

Greg, this stuff is invaluable - thanks for taking the time to fill us in. Any reports on Molden are especially appreciated - he's a terrific kid who's had a tough road and we are rooting for him.

ETA: Props to Buckna too

You're welcome, I hope some of it ends up being of use.

:goodposting: Most of the news we read here regarding training camps can be found elsewhere at the many fantasy sights on the innerwebs. These in-person training camp reports are one of the things that sets this place apart from the others.

This is great information! Please keep reporting as you go. You can't find this information elsewhere and is very valuable. Thanks!

Hey, Greg...

How are the backs doing in pass protection? Curious to know if a rookie like Slaton or a 2nd year player like Walker is making an equal impression (pardon this pun) in that field in comparison to just the run.

Any good FF player knows, without blocking, the back won't be on the field a lot.

I haven't been watching the QB and line very closely in the passing drills, mostly focusing on the receivers and secondary. The only play I can think of off the top of my head with Slaton or Walker in pass protection, I recall Walker just managed to block a linebacker in time for the QB to get the pass off, and looked a little overmatched had he needed to hold him off any longer than a fraction of a second.I'll add that to the list of things to watch more specifically. I'm hoping to go to the Tuesday and Wednesday morning practices this week as long as nothing major happens at work where I can't take the mornings off.

Thanks for holding a place for me on the bench there GregR, had a good time and we'll have to do it again sometime. I don't have a lot more to add since GregR and I were sitting in the same spot this time watching the same things.

I was not impressed with Chris Brown but it didn't seem like he got a lot of reps to judge on either. Darius Walker was the most impressive of the RB's this practice. He hit the holes hard, but some of his earlier runs were against the 3rd string so I am trying to temper my expectations. GregR had a comment about his speed lacking and I would agree, he doesn't really have that burst that you see in the really good RB's. Still, he could be very good value if the guys in front of him go down. Ahman Green looked excellent, he still has the burst, elusiveness and the speed, so health is the only major concern there. Slaton was very good on some outside runs (a sweep to the right was a big play, he burned just right around everybody,) but the few carries he got going up the middle were just as GregR described in the 1st practice (running into the back of his linemen.)

Travis Johnson was indeed in there playing 1st string DT next to Okoye. In the 11 vs 11 scrimmage, Mario was being moved around everywhere. He started at, I believe, RDE lined up against the LT, moved over to LDE, and even had a few snaps inside. The defense really dominated this particular practice although there were some coverage breakdowns here and there. I think this may be the weakest 2nd-ary we've had since Patrick Buchanon was starting for us during the disastrous 2-14 season.

The Texans coaching staff has talked a lot about establishing a run game this year, but the lack of a secondary until Dunta comes back may force their hand back to the passing game. I will try to get back to some more practices, I really enjoyed the hitting drills I watched Saturday.

Tuesday morning, July 29 camp report

Chris Brown and Roosevelt Colvin were both out today. I believe Chaun Thompson was out as well. Kalu filled in for Colvin and Coley filled in for Thompson.

During 9 on 7 drills (no WRs or CBs, mostly running plays), Duane Brown did a pretty nice job going primarily against Mario, including getting a fist bump from Alex Gibbs on one nice play where he sealed the edge on Mario. Darius Walker is putting together some nice runs but he lacks burst in my opinion, and often seems to have better holes to work with. Slaton had some more of the running into his own players back when he goes between the tackles, though he did have one nice run between the tackles when he had a big hole. He's great when he bounces it outside.

The O-line looked like they were doing a good job opening holes in the running game. Ahman Green had some really nice runs. He isn't showing any signs of last year's injury that I can tell. When it came to rushing, today he was clearly the best back to me with the others not terribly close. Walker had a fumble in goal line drills. All of the RBs got shots in the goal line drills. All of the scored at least once. Slaton and Taylor were both stopped once.

However, he (Green) struggled twice on blitz pickup. Once he did manage to make the guy go wide enough the QB had time to get it off, but he didn't actually block him. Another time he kind of looked lost as the rush went by either side of him, and one of the coaches was giving him advice after. I had been trying to watch blitz pickup more closely for Walker and Slaton. But they just didn't keep them in the backfield much on passing plays where I could tell.

The quarterbacks were noticeably hanging onto the ball too long. Schaub was really bad about it at first, then improved, while Sage seemed better at first and then got worse. He had one pretty bad one that prompted Kubiak to yell that they were holding the ball too long, and after that they started getting rid of it quicker.

On one play, WR Tim Carter just tore past the DB and would have had a TD but the ball was a little out of reach. Daniels had a nice diving catch. I felt like Sage was perhaps doing a better job at going through his progressions quickly than Schaub was. Andre Johnson didn't stand out as much as he normally does, but was still the best receiver by far. During goal line 6 on 7 drills, Schaub threw a corner fade to Walters, who bobbled it and might have come down with it. Ref called it incomplete but it would probably have been reviewed in a game.

One corner I'd like to see more on is Derrick Roberson. Though he was the guy that Tim Carter outran, a few times I've noticed him as having some tight coverage on his receiver. Jimmy Williams had an interception.

At one point the offense was just walking through goal line plays without a defense. There were very few formations with WRs... not sure if that is indicative of their goal line plans, or just the plays they were working on.

Slaton and Chris Taylor were in the mix fielding kickoffs. Darius Walker was on the kickoff coverage team. I didn't see Andre Davis in the mix, which was surprising and made me wonder if they were just trying guys out as you'd have to believe he'll be the primary guy.

During the full 11 on 11 scrimmage where the chains would move, the offenses ability to open up holes was what stood out to me. Also I noticed that Mike Bisiel was the 1st string RG. 2nd string was Salaam, Studdard, Eslinger, C. White moved to RG from C, and Butler at RT.

Great stuff guys. This is one of the situations that I'll be following closely between now and the beginning of the season. Whoever emerges from this situation may end up having some nice value (my money is on Green right now).

A. Green = value :goodposting:
Agreed but I also thought that was the case last year....
Guessing more people will even avoid more in redrafts than did last year, so he will go late enough where his risk/reward should not kill you even he winds up injured again.BTW, thanks again guys for the reports as I rely on you locals. Every year I think that I will be able sneak back down to Houston during this time of the year and something or another comes up.

wait...so with the updated dates...does that mean theres no practice this friday? and i was wondering if i can use the friday tickets for a different session.

Correct. All the afternoon ones were cancelled, though they left the Thursday evening one.The remaining open practices are: Wednesday, July 30 8:30 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. Thursday, July 31 7:15 p.m. - 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 8:30 a.m. - 10: 45 a.m.Speaking of which, I'll make tomorrow's as I'm taking the morning off again.. Thursday is up in the air still depending on work. Saturday I likely will not make.

They normally have a box at the gate that people can drop their unused tickets into so anyone without them can use them. On Sunday there were probably a hundred unused tickets in there, so I doubt you'll have a problem getting in.

Interesting and kind of worrisome that AG struggled in blitz pickup. One would think with his veteran-ness that he'd be at least decent to solid but to look lost at one point? Has me curious at least.

What's Chaun Thompson's role supposed to be, and how's he looking in camp? (I'm aware of his leg injury, BTW, but how has he looked otherwise?)

Honest his role was supposed to the same Colvin's before Colvin signed. From what here, he was showing okay as a pass rusher, but was not as strong in what LBing duties that were signed. My guess is that he will be depth at both passing rush De and LB while play a key special teams role.
