Precription for Budgeting your team for an Auction Draft (1 Viewer)

Salary cap = $100,000,000

28 Mandated Roster

Offense: 1 QB, 1 RB, 1WR, 1TE, 1 PK + 2 Flex (RB/WR/TE)

Defense: 3DL, 2LB, 3DB + Def + 2 Flex (DL/LB/DB)

If I'm using maurile's formula and Rank #'s in DD, what would be the best way to create a budget for the Starters and the Backups? I',m looking to use the actual Player Pool results from my DD file using Maurile's Baselines to come up with the optimum allocation of funds for each position. Any suggestions?

Thanks,

PT

Because we'd need to know more about your scoring, particularly the IDP scoring, this probably belongs in the AC forum. I'm generally of the mind that about 70-75% of my budget is dedicated to offense. That's with balanced IDP scoring and only starting 9 IDP in my league. As time has progressed my league has become better informed, and I have to spend more on IDP to optimize my roster. Gone are the fun days when I could stack my defense cheap. I'm expecting to possibly invest 33% of my budget in defense this year. So, the level of competition is also important in knowing how to answer your question.

Here's a very simplified approach I start with every year. I take a third of the funds, in your case $333,000, and allocate them to my defense. I take the remaining 2/3rds and allocate it to my offense. Now I forget about the 333k. I approach the auction as if all I have is 667k, but I am also only drafting offense. Why? There's great auction value information out there if you seek it, but not for IDP. I know Tomlinson and Peterson could catch 35 - 40% of funds in a non-IDP league so separating the budget by O and D helps me organize value. I like Peterson at about 35% this year, but in our cases that's 35% of 2/3rds because we have extensive Ds to build. I should add that I have never spent 33% on my D and I am a big fan of exhausting the funds, so I understand in the back of my head that I can and will dip into the D money to secure a player here and there. As I stated above, I am generally about 25-30% invested in IDPs these days. There was a time when 20% built an awesome D.

Good luck.

Good take on this.

I'm going about the same boat, doing it intuitively. I've planned about 30% for Defense.

But I really wanted to do it quantitatively. I want to use the actual Player Pool resutls from my DD file using Maurile's Baselines to come up with the optimum allocation of funds for each position.

I was wondering if anyone has taken an analytical approach to budgeting instead of relying on gut instincts or prior years knowledge of the league...

auction IDPs are really tough to budget. There's a lot of positions to fill, some are more scarce than others and it's worth it to put a little extra money towards them. RB, TE, DE, LB are the positions I consider that have a lot of disparity amongst the leaders, I would put more money there.

but talking budget, no idea, not much of a set budget guy. I plan my big buck purchanses and go out and get them and I don't let my guy get away just because he went for $2 more. There's info to be found on % auctions values on basic leagues, IDP auctions are pretty scarce and the results will vary greatly amongst results. The funny thing is Peterson will go for 35% in your typical league, and he'll go for 35% in your IDP league even though there's defensive roster to fill. You need to decide if you have enough IDP knowledge to scrape together a competitive defense out of the dollar bin? If you don't feel confident on IDP sleepers, best to stay away from the expensive stuff and go for the more balanced approach.

My advice would be to plan your big purchases on offense with the % that are out there, plan to put more $ than typical for the guys you want just because the budgets are so big. From there you get a better understanding of what you can spend on the rest of your team. For every sleeper you feel good about, the more you can put at another position. that's how I look at it.

hope that helps

This is one thing I wish Bruce had included on DD. Based on your Roster Requirements to provide an optimum budget for each position to maximize points.
