Player Spotlight: Sidney Rice (1 Viewer)

2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Sidney Rice, WR, Minnesota Vikings

Player Page Link: Sidney Rice Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Childress will try and win with defense and running the ball. Too bad for Rice that they are among the tops in both and won't be blown out in many games forcing them to throw the ball. Great talent bad situation. The best case scenario is that he gets 8-9 TDs due to his great red zone ability but that's probably a stretch. He'll have a couple good games but I'm afraid we'll see a lot 4-37-0, 3-42-0 type efforts.....

Vikings QB's managed to throw for a total of 2,813 yards and 14 TD's last year. Let's say T.Jackson's development has moved up a bit and Vikings will pass more to alleviate the frequency of 8-man front stopping AP, the total team passing yards for 2008 will improve a bit: 3,000 yards and 19 TD's.

Since Berrian is a newcomer and hasn't developed chemistry with TJ, Rice is likely to be TJ's #1 receiver. Also Berrian is a speed burner which will draw some attention from the safeties which leaves the middle open occasionally for Rice. As #1 team receiver, I anticipate Rice to post stats looking like this: 62 catches, 756 yards, 7 TD's. A decent #3 FFL wr who has upside of #2 in long term depending on the QB development.

As a rice owner, I expect 58/720/6 out of him this year, due mostly to offensive philospophy but also limitaitions of Jackson... If they ever got Favre.... 90/1250/10

I was a Rice owner until this morning. I love his talent, hate his situation. 50-700-7

Seriously what's so good about Sidney Rice? The stats were far from impressive (even for a rookie) and the situation sucks. He caught a couple of deep passes last season but that's about it. Maybe I'm missing something. Where's all this hype coming from?

Chad Johnson rook year 28-329-1, Steve Smith 10-154, and so on. He was a rookie wr, you can throw stats out the window, especially since he didn't start for more than 1/2 the year and their passing offense was a train wreck. If you watch him play he's got the talent to be a star, he's very young, he's big, has tremendous leaping ability and body control which will make him a great red zone target.

From having watched all the games last year, the biggest thing I can say about his "less than impressive" stats, is that for the most part, he was not on the field for a great amount of time and when he did get on the field he made really good plays. He had one or two long receptions and then his highlight reel touchdown grab, where he went about 65" with his vertical, but for me what stood out were a couple of sideline first downs that he had to stretch for and keep his feet in bounds while making the tough catch (ala Cris Carter). He was impressive in the limited time that he got last season, and after being at training camp yesterday and seeing how he handled himself - extra running after a catch and hustling back to get in line (more than any other WR) I expect him to have a very good career! As for this year, I am not down on Tarvaris as much as some, but the fact that this is a running team will definitely hurt his stats. I see him as the possession WR and redzone threat. 65-700-8 seems about right.

I think a lot of focus will be given to AD and Berrian which will benefit Rice greatly. Minnesota plays nine defenses that ranked in the bottom half for pyds/g last season. Rice could be a playoff star when Min plays Chi, Det, Ari, and Atl in wks 13-16; those teams gave up ~33 att/g. He could easily have a few ~100yd/1-2td performances in those games and is definitely on my list.

So then what are your projections for Bernard Berrian.I don't see any way that Rice catches 80+ passes.

I think you are on to something...especially with TD's. S. Rice is good at extending his arms/body over defenders. So, I am thinking you may be a tad high on receptions/yards but I can see the TD's being higher....10 perhaps...maybe 12.

...Isn't this just about the average for the NFL?

I am hesitant to buy into Rice, but he could represent a great value. WR's of his body type/ability are pretty hit and miss, and it seems to be closely related to opportunity and QB quality.

Will he be more like Chad Johnson, or more like Andre Davis in this respect?

I have the same questions with Roddy White. Both are talented but will be limited in opportunity due to the team they are on. At least White has proven himself already.

Low end: 50-700-5

High end: 70-900-8

The stats I posted were a best case scenario ie if Rice has a breakout year similar to Marshall last year; Berrian would then have WR2 stats. Just my opinion, it could go any way.

Might be, but the teams they face are mostly closer to the bottom third in pass def; games vs Chi2x Det2x Ari = 5 games vs a team in bottom 6 for pass def. Regardless, it makes a strong case for drafting him rather than some other receivers in his range. In any case, I think he will be a great WR3/4/5
