Player Spotlight: Mark Clayton (1 Viewer)

Zoo York
2008 Player Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The Shark Pool is, in our view, the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things fantasy football. In what's become an annual tradition, the Player Spotlight series is a key part of the preseason efforts. As many of you know, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. Last year, we published more than 140 offensive spotlights covering the vast majority of expected skill position starters. This year will be no different.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways. 1) At the end of the week, we will tally the projections into a consensus. 2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Mark Clayton, WR, Baltimore Ravens

Player Page Link: Mark Clayton Player Page

Each article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

In order for this thread to provide maximum value, we ask that you follow a few simple guidelines:

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, you MUST provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For QBs: Passing Yards, Passing TDs, Ints, Rush Yards, Rush TDs
For RBs: Rushes, Rushing Yards, Rush TDs, Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDs
For WRs & TEs: Receptions, Receiving Yards, Receiving TDsNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

We're still waiting for this guy to 'arrive'.

bad offense, new OC, lousy QB's, bad O-line..not much to like, as long as Derrick Mason is still hanging around

this guy needs BAL QB situation to quit being "in flux", i mean where is Trent Dilfer when you need him?

until that happens he will be a tease

Those are a lot of factors to prove any player fantasy-unworthy. However, I have confidence in Mark Clayton. I can't imagine Mason being around for much longer or having a significant roll as he is 34 years old. So my thought is that Clayton will get a respectable more amount of touches this year (say 20, to drop Mason's touches to about 80 in 2008...seems fair). That would roughly put him at 800 yards with, say, 3-4 td's. Now in 2009, when Clayton is 35 I'de imagine a huge slip in his numbers and Clayton taking over the bulk of this. If Mason can put up the numbers he did in 2007 then why can't Clayton do the same when Mason is out. Also, if Derrick Mason can put up the numbers he did last year then logically you can exclude "bad offense, new OC, lousy QB's, and bad O-line" as being factors in Clayton's progress in 2009, or 2008 for that matter. I guess what I'm saying is that concerning all the negatives mentioned about Baltimore they still produced a darn good WR last year and I feel that Clayton could easily be that person. Injuries slowed him down but he was drafted as, although short, a guy with great hands that runs great routes. I'm not saying Clayton is a Marvin Harrison but these were the same characteristics of him.

Post Mason era, which should be soon, I think he will have his chance when he is the go-to guy to prove himself.

Along with D.J. Hackett, Mark Clayton is a guy that I am targeting as late round, value packed sleepers. People are down on a guy that was poised to "breakout" last year, and have completely written off this year. That's fine, because that leads people to pass on him which would in turn mean greater value when drafted. There is no real downside to drafting this guy later than the 10/11th round.

I guess he looks like a new man at camp and has been their best WR by a wide margin.

I think he might be this year's version of Roddy White.

Severely undervalued...He will have a bounce back year in my opinion, but will still be held back by inept Baltimore passing attack.

Well,Clayton is having a rough year, and Mason's shoulder is in rough shape. I feel Clayton is a stash if you have room in a dynasty. He'll be 27 on 7-2-09 and Mason is getting older.I'm picking him up off the ww and dropping C. Henry in my dyno for '09 'cause I think the production is yet to come. What do you guys think?

I didn't want to start a new thread since there is already one on him.

I grabbed him last week in my redraft league because it looked like he was starting to get more involved. But the Giants' game was pretty dismal. It wasn't a good matchup but only three targets and Flacco locking in on Mason the entire game looked a lot like earlier in the season. I'll give Clayton another couple of games and we'll see if he starts getting more involved again but the Giants' game has me wondering if my assessment of his rising value may have been incorrect.

I agree. packersfan, with Flacco's arm/upside/Mason's shoulder, I feel Clayton has a chance to really produce, not only for the remainder of the season, but for dynasty circles too.

I would bet Clayton will be a #3 next year best case and possibly #4 depending upon whether Williams can get and stay healthy and/or development of younger players. Either Ravens address WR in the draft or via FA in the offseason. IIRC, Mason has another year left and his play certainly warrants bringing him back for another year. Clayton hasn't show great hands, route running, separation or speed so out of curiosity why other than his age and being a high draft pick, would you think, his fifth season or thereafter will be a breakout? As far as this year, Gaither may not play this week and perhaps a couple more weeks, Anderson and Terry both have ankle issues but should play against the Eagles. OT is quickly becoming very thin with some tough pass rushes against Eagles, Skins and Steelers upcoming.

Well Rhino, it really is just a gut feeling. I don't have keen eye for talent as far as WR goes. In '06 he had 67/939/5 and in '07 he had 48/531/0, I just have a gut feeling he produces in the future. Do you disagree?
