2008 IDP Spotlight Series

One of Footballguys best assets is our message board community. The IDP Forum here has grown quickly over the past few years and is probably the best place on the internet to discuss, debate and analyze all things related to IDPs. In what we hope to make an annual tradition, the IDP Spotlight series will be a key part of our preseason effort this year. As many of you know from what has been done with offensive players over the years, we consider the Player Spotlight threads the permanent record for analyzing the fantasy prospects of the player in question. This year, we hope to publish IDP Spotlights for approximately 50-60 players, which should account for most of the key IDP starters for this year and possibly years to come.

Each week we will post a list of players to be discussed. Those threads will remain open for the entire preseason, and should be a central point to discussion expectations for the player in question. Importantly, analysis done in the first week (or possibly longer) of posting will be part of the permanent record in two ways.

1) At the end of the week (or longer when necessary), we will tally the projections into a consensus.

2) We will select a number of pull quotes from forum contributors who make a compelling statement or observation. Both the projections and pull quotes will be part of a published article on the main website.

Thread Topic: Jason Taylor, DL, Washington Redskins

Player Page Link: Jason Taylor Player Page

Each published article will include:

Detailed viewpoint from a Footballguys staff member
Highlighted member commentary from the message board threads
FBG Projections
Consensus Member ProjectionsThe Rules

Focus commentary on the player in question, and your expectations for said player
Back up your expectations in whatever manner you deem appropriate; avoid posts that simply say "I hate him" or "He's the best"
To be included in the final synopsis and consensus outlook, we request that you provide projections for the playerProjections should include (at a minimum):

For DLs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, PD
For LBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PD
For DBs: Solos, Assists, Sacks, INT, PDNow let's get on with the conversation! We look forward to your contributions and let me offer a personal thanks in anticipation of the great debate and analysis.

Wow, is this a tough situation to analyze. You've got an all-world defensive end at the age of 34 playing in his 12th season, but his first with any team other than Miami. He spent an offseason dancing on TV & with the new regime in Miami. Rumors were that he would be done after this season to persue other career alternatives and Miami (namely Parcells) was not happy with his attitude. So he finally lands in Washington and Miami gets some coveted draft picks for a guy they weren't happy with anyway.

Washington went after Taylor not even 24 hours after losing two D-ends to season ending injuries. They suddenly had a gaping hole and he was the best stopgap available. He will start every game and play every defensive down if healthy opposite another well above average D-end in Andre Carter.

So what does this all mean? Will Taylor put up similar stats in a new system on a new team? Will he be motivated if the team starts to fade down the stretch? I think we see a great D-end start to decline a little and land at the bottom end of the top 10 D-linemen for 2008 (lower than he's finished this century). Solid DL1 with even a little upside.

I'm expecting 45 solos, 16 assts, 10 sacks, 3 FF's & 2 FR's. That's unbelievable for a 34 year old. He's truly one of the greatest to ever play the position.

When the Skins lost starting LDE Phillip Daniels and backup DE Alex Buzbee on the first day of training camp, it didn’t take long for Snyder to put a deal together to bring Jason Taylor in. One thing we know for sure … he’s going to be a DE now. However, Taylor may be lining up at LDE instead of his familiar RDE … Taylor’s take “While it will be different than what I have done for the majority of my career, I have done plenty of it, and had success. I will have to adjust my game, and we will find a way to do it, but it will take some work.”

I think Taylor will still be good, not quite as good number wise as we’ve seen in the past though. If he lines up on the lefts side, I expect his his tackle numbers to be solid and his sacks down.

I think those numbers are the right idea. I should add that he's not going to play every down - they have the solid if unspectacular Demetric Evans to rotate with him and keep him fresh, and they're also going to move him around a little, though certainly not as much as Miami did with him in that 3-4 Falcon (?) scheme. He and Carter will be a formidable tandem in pass rush situations.

As I suspected, they flip-flopped Taylor and Carter on some plays in last night's game vs. the Bills. This prompted false starts by both the RT and the LT opposite Taylor when they did this. :lmao:

The bottom line is that his addition to this defense should create a lot of pass pressure and benefit both him and Carter.

On the next possession, the Bills went three-and-out.

Neither of those things are earth-shattering. Defenses are supposed to do such things.

But the Redskins kept the Bills out of the end zone on that first possession with Shawn Springs, their best cornerback, playing free safety.

And they got that three-and-out with Andre Carter moving from right defensive end to left defensive end and Jason Taylor moving from left to right. Carter has been at right defensive end for the past 33 games.

"That's something we've been working on at practice," Carter said. "It's a nice changeup, and it makes you a better all-around player. If you can play both sides, it keeps the offensive opponents guessing.

"If a tackle has to prepare for two opponents, it makes his job a lot tougher."

Taylor arrived at Redskins training camp July 21 after spending the previous 11 seasons with the Miami Dolphins. He also had spent most of his time in Miami at right defensive end.

Carter had 10 ½ sacks last season and is one of the team's most diligent workers. When Taylor was acquired, the polite thing to say was that Taylor would start out on the left side.

But when you are one of the best pass rushers in NFL history -- Taylor has 117 career sacks -- it is only a matter of time before your new team finds a way to put you where you are most effective.

The underlying feeling was that Carter would struggle if he moved to the left side. That was not the case last night.

Carter's time at left end was brief, but it was effective. He held his ground and even knocked down a pass on a third down play.

"I felt good," Carter said. "It's a matter of equilibrium. If you stay on a certain side for a long period of time, the muscle groups and everything like that get used to reacting in a certain way.

"When you flip, you've got to train your eyes and train your body. It's all about movement. It's about getting your reps in practice and being comfortable and not thinking about what you're doing and just letting loose."
