Ahman's Green signing from another perspective

Thanks Coolnerd!!!! I will be closely watching the health of Andre Johnson, and see in there are any hidden later round gems at RB (like maybe Chris Brown or Slaton).

Under the category of zero surprise the following rumor is out there

"Adam Caplan, of Scout.com, reports free-agent RB Mike Bell (Broncos) is scheduled to work out for the Houston Texans. "

Questions already arising in Texans running back situation

Chris Brown is already being forced to the sidelines with aches and pains. The Texans signed Brown as a free agent to help spell Ahman Green. But they knew Brown came with injury issues of his own. And those issues are already starting to creep up.

He has a sore back that has forced him to miss Monday morning's practice. It's not a good sign for a player who has only played in 17 games with four starts over the past two seasons.

The good news is it's giving the younger guys like Chris Taylor, Steve Slaton and Darius Walker more repetitions. But they aren't all looking like they are taking full advantage of it. Taylor is having problems keeping hold of the ball, and Slaton has struggled with that at times, too. He got the ball popped out of his hands today by DeMeco Ryans.

It's good they are all getting that work now though. It's clearly better to drop in practice than the games. And with Taylor being out of football for a year, it's going to take him some time to get back to where he was before.

Green is still not having any knee issues — knock on wood. And the coaches are resting him so that he's only a once-a-day practice player.

Running back is one of the most integral positions on the team this season. Sore backs and dropped balls mean little now, but there is concern about how healthy and productive this unit can be when the games become important. How do you see the situation working itself out? Who will get the bulk of carries this season?

Good info here. Thanks for posting. The RB situation in Houston this pre-season reminds me of the situation in Green bay last year. I really think one main back will emerge in Houston and I don't think it will be Green or Brown.

Mike bell signed by the Texans

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports/5917600.html

With concerns still surrounding the back injury to Chris Brown, the Texans signed former Broncos running back Mike Bell on Thursday.

Bell is well-versed on the zone-blocking scheme the Texans are implementing this offseason.

He is a third-year back who saw his most success as a rookie in 2006 in Denver. He posted the fourth-most rushing yards (677) and tied for the second-most rushing touchdowns (8) by an undrafted NFL rookie since the inception of the common draft in 1967. Bell battled injuries in 2007 and saw little playing time.

The 6-0, 225 pounder was released by the Broncos this offseason when he struggled as the team tried to move him to fullback.

To make room on the roster for Bell, the Texans released safety Brandon Harrison.

Chris Brown missed his fourth day of practice because of back problems Thursday. Kubiak said his return could still be two more days away.

so much for believeing Chris Brown might actually turn it around in Houston and become a 1000 yard rusher for them.. :goodposting:

Doesn't sound serious, but Andre Johnson got hurt about three plays before the end of practice this morning. From the team's official website.

http://www.houstontexans.com/news/Story.asp?story_id=4453

“I just tweaked my groin a little bit,” Johnson said. “That’s about it. Nothing really major. I’ll go in and get some treatment over the next two days and I’ll be fine.

“I didn’t tear anything or anything like that. It’s hot out here. Sometimes those things happen. You have little tweaks and stuff like that. Other than that, I’m fine. It’s no big deal. I didn’t tear anything. I slowed down actually when I felt it tighten up on me. That was a good thing. Other than that, I don’t think it will be a problem.”
Link has video with Andre talking afterward.

Not sure if you're referring to Brown's injury or the Bell signing. Bell probably won't even make the team, and will have no effect on how good (or not) Brown is this year IMO.

Another possible scenario is Bell was signed because the Texans are not confident that Brown will be completly healthy for the season, and he may be cut. Either way, get Slaton while the gettin' is good.

Bell out of shapeSaturday 8/2, 2:29 PM CT

Running back Mike Bell will have to work on his conditioning as he had a problem getting through Houston's practice today, according to HoustonTexans.com. “To be honest with you, he’s not in the shape the rest of our football team is and we found that out real fast,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said.

Our View: That's not the best way for Bell to start with a new team, but it is something that can be corrected with time.
Regardless of whether or not Brown is healthy, I don't see Bell mattering.

Bell cut, Tucker signed for depth

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/5931910.html

One day before they begin the preseason schedule against Denver at Reliant Stadium, the Texans placed former Broncos running back Mike Bell on waivers and signed free agent offensive tackle Torrin Tucker.

When Bell was signed last week because of Chris Brown's back injury, he showed up out of shape, then suffered a hamstring injury and wasn't able to participate in practice.

Because of injuries, the Texans are desperate for offensive linemen, especially tackles. Tackle Ephraim Salaam (knee) and Scott Jackson (foot) and guard Fred Weary (leg) are out.

Tucker, 28, will be entering his fifth season. The 6-6, 315-pound tackle entered the NFL with Dallas and played for Oakland and Tampa Bay.

Running back note from Lance Z.

I watched the Saturday AM practice as well so we saw pretty much the same thing. I think Green still looks like he has something in the tank and I still see enough burst. He's not as quick as he once was, but it is good enough. I think Taylor's biggest problem right now is that he isn't always making the right reads in the zone. That is a major deal. He has to get that worked out. I agree with you on Walker. I think he's just a guy, but he seemed to make the right reads as much as any back out there. He's serviceable. I like the zip that Slaton shows, but even when the Texans are just arm wrapping him, he seems to slow way down. I'm wondering if he can get any yards after contact and run as hard as they need.

If there were any doubt that Duane Brown is going to start, then it has to be completely eliminated now

on T Ephraim Salaam) “I need to fill you all in on what is going on with Ephraim. Ephraim has a knee that has bothered him in the past, and actually he’s had some problems with the other one in the last week at camp. We were just practicing him once a day on grass, and he was doing fine. He woke up yesterday morning and he could feel something up under his kneecap. We went right away and fixed it at lunch yesterday. It was a cartilage problem. We feel good about what was done, but he is a three to four week scenario right now. So it’s, you know, scary for us from a standpoint at the tackle position, but that’s where we are at, and we expect him back for the start of the season. So we’re very encouraged about that, and then we released Mike Bell and signed (Torrin) Tucker today. Those are the things that have happened, the most significant thing being losing Ephraim yesterday morning.”
on how much more rookie T Duane Brown will get in preseason now) “Duane is going to play more anyway. We consider Duane, Chris Myers, and (Mike) Brisiel still to be young players, and we had planned on playing them a half anyway.”

(on RB Mike Bell being out of shape and getting hurt) “We don’t think he was physically quite with the rest of the team. You know, he had a little tweak. He has had it before. We worked him back and probably he could have went back on the field this morning. But because of our situation having to sign the tackle yesterday, we had to make a move. And the most obvious place for us right now with Chris Brown, is to let a back go. We like the kid though, I can tell you all that. We do like the kid.”

Game review: Green hurt and RBs look mediocore, but Texans win

http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/sports...nt/5934493.html

Kris Brown’s fourth field goal with no time remaining gave the Texans a 19-16 victory over Denver in the preseason opener at Reliant Stadium.

Brown connected from 25 yards, finishing a 15-play, 54-yard drive engineered by third-string quarterback Shane Boyd on Saturday night.

Brown also kicked field goals of 23, 52 and 23 yards.

The Texans lost running back Ahman Green on their first play. He caught a 5-yard pass from Matt Schaub and suffered a pulled groin muscle.

“They don’t think it’s bad, but we don’t know the extent of it yet,” Texans coach Gary Kubiak said about Green’s injury.

The worst thing the Texans failed to accomplish on offense was score touchdowns in the red zone. The only touchdown came on Sage Rosenfels’ 16-yard pass to David Anderson that gave them a 13-7 lead in the second quarter.

Anderson finished as the leading receiver with six catches for 67 yards.

On the Texans’ other penetrations inside Denver’s 20-yard line, they settled for field goals by Brown.

Rosenfels, who was 10-of-15 for 137 yards, did a terrific job in place of Schaub. Besides the touchdown pass to Anderson, he connected with Jacoby Jones on a 41-yard completion that set up a field goal.

Schaub was 4-of-5 for 29 yards on a drive that led to Brown’s first field goal.

Rosenfels, Schaub and Boyd, who was 4-of-5 for 25 yards, completed passes to 11 different receivers.

“Matt and Sage functioned very well,” Kubiak said. “I was very impressed with Shane. This preseason’s real important to him, and he did a good job (Saturday).”

The Texans rushed for 140 yards on 36 carries, a 3.9-yard average. But 54 of those yards came in the fourth quarter.

Boyd ran five times for 28 yards. The leading rusher was rookie Steve Slaton, a third-round pick. He carried 11 times for 37 yards.

The Broncos ran for 123 of their 276 yards.

Denver’s Houston connection of running backs Selvin Young and Anthony Alridge generated 23 yards on eight carries. Alridge came off the bench in the fourth quarter and ran for 20 yards on four carries, including 19 on one carry.

The best thing the Texans did on defense was to keep the Broncos out of the end zone. Denver’s only touchdown came on a 15-yard first-quarter scramble by quarterback Jay Cutler. The Broncos settled for Matt Prater field goals of 38, 31 and 26 yards — all in the second half.

“I guess we tightened up and became more physical when they reached our red zone, but we shouldn’t have let them drive the ball on us like they did,” Texans defensive tackle Travis Johnson said.

The defense forced two turnovers on interceptions by safety Nick Ferguson and cornerback Jamar Fletcher.

:hey:

I'm sorry. But, come on! The first play of the preseason Ahman Green pulls up lame?

Maybe they can still sign Cedric Benson ...
Only a matter of time before Brown gets hurt opening the door for Slayton to come in a produce.
Who then fumbles and opens the door for Chris Taylor. He proceeds to fumble and finds the bench alongside Slaton. In comes Chris Brown. He last almost a game before developing a hangnail. Kubiak calls up Fat Ron Dayne who plods along for the rest of the season gaining 3 ypc.

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak spoke to the media on Sunday following his team's 19-16 win over the Denver Broncos in the Saturday preseason opener. After watching game film, Kubiak was encouraged by the performance of several young players, including rookie left tackle Duane Brown, and added that the team will likely sign another running back to make up for the minor setback suffered by starter Ahman Green.

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak

(on RB Ahman Green) “He has a slight pull in his groin. It doesn’t look severe. It looks like we’re pretty fortunate there. I’m going to list him as day-to-day right now. I kind of see him like (WR) Andre (Johnson) coming off that thing a week ago. I think if we were in the season and playing right now that we would push it harder and try to get him back quicker. I think right now we’ll be smart; we’ll list him as day-to-day. Chances of him playing this week, though, I would think would be very slim, but it looks like we’re very fortunate. It doesn’t look like it’s too severe.”

(on if it was disappointing to see RB Ahman Green go down so early) “Yeah, it’s very disappointing. After what we’ve been through and how important he is to the football team and how good of a camp he’s had, to have that happen on a play where you don’t even get touched, you know, it’s kind of deflating in a way. But, I think we feel better about it. We know we’re going to get him back, and so we’ve got to just stay positive and get these young kids ready to play.”

(on bright spots of the game) “I guess I can go through all three phases. I’ll start with the special teams. There were some good things going on. I thought (WR) Harry Williams flashed; he’s been flashing the whole camp as a special teams player. (He) does a lot of things for (special teams coordinator) Joe (Marciano). Of course, Kris Brown was amazing in the game, kicking those field goals. He’s been special all along. Disappointed, of course, in the turnover, turnover gets them right back in the ballgame, and that’s something that (WR Jacoby Jones) 12’s had a problem with and we’ve got to get him back on to track so to speak. He’s got to protect the ball. We’ll do everything we can in practice to get him the drills to simulate that, but he has to do a better job from that standpoint.

"Offensively, the disappointing things, of course, were the red zone. We had a lot of mistakes from a standpoint of young guys and communication problems which, you know, you expect some of that in the first time out, but we still had too many. The positive things to me, there were some really good things going on with some of these young linemen. Just to mention a few, the (T Rashad) Butler kid struggled in camp the first week, played really well last night. I thought (T) Duane Brown played well. Y’all asked me last night, but I couldn’t give you an honest answer without watching the film but was pleased with his work. (G Mike) Brisiel played well. (WR) David Anderson, as we all know, played extremely well. (TE) Joel Dreesen did some good things, not only on offense but on special teams. And then, not turning the ball over is something we’ve been preaching throughout camp, so we were able to protect the ball. The biggest disappointment offensively was the red zone. You know, we were one for four down there and (if we) find a way to get the ball in the end zone, you’re in much better off in that game. (We) come out of it with a lot of things to work on but a lot of positives. (We) walked away healthy other than (RB) Ahman (Green), so we’ll get back to work this week on some of those things for New Orleans.

"Defensively, looking at the big picture, I thought the thing that we did was play extremely well in the red zone, and we found a way to get turnovers. So, those two things give you a chance to win every week. Much like on the offensive side of the ball when we did give up some plays, it wasn’t so much ability as it was mental assignments and busts in assignments and some of our pressures and those types of things. We’ve got a lot of work to do this week to make sure we clean those up especially with some of our younger players. So, we’ll go work on doing that, but first time out, there’s going to be plenty of mistakes, but there were lots of positives for us to build on. Coming out of this game, you have to look at some of these players that were listed as second and third team players that have proven they deserve more of an opportunity and get opportunities with the first unit. So, we will take a look at that as we move towards this week.”

(on the performance of running backs in the new system) “Well, it is different than what we’ve done in the past from a standpoint. Some of Alex’s (Gibbs) schematics, some of the things he teaches especially the fullbacks and backs, we’re running the same plays but some of the reads are different, some of the cuts are different. So, I think some of our guys are still getting used to that. I thought (RB) Chris (Taylor) showed the flashes of (RB) Chris Taylor we’ve seen in the past, so that was very positive. He needs to continue to get better in pass protection. I thought number 20 (RB Steve Slaton) showed why he’s here; he’s got the speed. You could tell by just watching the film that he’s faster than anybody out there. If we can get him going in the right direction, he’s got a chance to make some big plays. (RB) Darius (Walker) got a few reps in there himself. All three of those guys have to become more complete players. They have to protect the quarterback better. We almost lost a very valuable piece of our team (QB Sage Rosenfels) because of a busted assignment, so they need to improve in that area, and they’re going to get a ton of reps to do that now especially with (RB) Ahman (Green) missing some time."

(on WR Jacoby Jones’ fumble on his punt return) “Yeah, he’s trying to do too much. At some point, when you can’t get to the edge, you have to stick your foot in the ground and get four or five (yards) and let the offense come on the field. If you reverse your field and lose ground, that’s not something we teach. That’s him trying to make a play but the bottom line is he’s still swinging the ball. That’s something he’s been doing, something we’ve been working on and something that he will get fixed. I promise, because whoever is going to be back there is going to protect the ball, and that starts with him. I’m disappointed in that and we have to get it fixed.”

(on T Duane Brown playing well) “Well, he’s always on his feet, very athletic. He went against a very good pass rusher, the (Broncos DE Elvis) Dumervil kid. He had a lot of snaps against him but very much under control. No problems assignment-wise, showed the ability to cut (block) down field. Those types of things that we knew he would do well. I’ll tell you one of the things that really jumped to me when I watched the tape, this kid’s enthusiasm to play the game. We were kicking an extra point and he’s over there congratulating (K) Kris (Brown). This kid loves to play. He’s been pressed into a very quick role, for obvious reasons, and he’s handling it well. I just want to see him continue to develop.”

(on if P Matt Turk’s apparent fake punt was by design) “No, that was not by design, believe me. We don’t have any fourth-and-20 plays for (P) Matt (Turk), I can promise you that. He went to punt the ball and (FB Jameel) Cook was trying to block the edge, and I think the guy beat him a little bit and the color flashed on Matt. He probably still should have kicked the ball but after he double clutched it we should have gotten it gone. But no, I promise you, that was not by design. It’s just unfortunate he came up about six inches short of the first down.”

(on G Kasey Studdard’s performance) “You know what, he played better than he’s played in the past. He’s more physical. He’s sharper in what we are doing. He still had some of the plays that have held him back, and I don’t mean that negatively. He’s so aggressive, he gets out of control sometimes. He still had some of those show up. He’s got to kind of control some of this emotion that he plays with. When he learns to do that and be consistent, that’s when he’s going to be a starter for a long, long time. It was a step in the right direction, but we've still got some things to work with him.”

(on if QB Shane Boyd has the third quarterback spot secured) “I think him and (QB) Alex (Brink), what we are trying to figure out between him and Alex (Brink) is if we think one of those guys is worthy of being our third quarterback that has a chance to be a backup or a starter in this league some day. We are trying to figure that out between the two of them. With the roster spots, when it’s all said and done, that is always going to be a huge decision. Do you keep three, or do you not? We aren’t going to keep three just to keep three. We're going to believe in that guy, so it was a very important time for him (Shane Boyd) and the kid did a nice job there at the end of the game; played with a lot of confidence. And I hope to give Alex (Brink) the same opportunity this week. So, it’s going to be a tough decision for us, but we are going to make the kids earn it and we’ll see what happens.”

(on if QB Shane Boyd will play again this week) “I don’t want to ever say never, that he won’t play this week. It’s like I told (QB) Alex (Brink) last night, 'Don’t assume you’re not playing. I mean, you could have ended up playing.' But chances are, things this week we'll go with (QB) Matt (Schaub) increasing his play, (QB) Sage (Rosenfels) probably playing about the same and then (QB) Alex (Brink) finishing things up.”

(on patience with the running game) “We have the same expectations. We went out there on that field and we’re preaching running the ball, run the ball better and those types of things. Our team expects that, too. The thing I liked about the game as I told you was the mentality at the end of the game. We were able to run the ball. Even though that was a lot of our backup players fighting for a spot out there, that’s the way you want to be able to do things. I think it was a step in the right direction. Do we have a long way to go? You bet. We open up against some of the best defenses in football. We’re going to have to continue to make a great deal of improvement to running the ball to running it effectively.”

(on who he thought did well on the pass rush) “Well, the guy that flashed at me was (DE) N.D. Kalu. He really flashed at me when we were just sitting up there as coaches talking about players. And the thing I saw from him, first off, N.D (Kalu) is a one-a-day practice guy. N.D. (Kalu) has got a knee that’s bothered him and a body that’s beat up through years of service, but I saw a guy who was hungry to help this football team and play, and that’s important to me. I don’t care if you’ve been doing it 12 years or two years. He stepped out there and really played with a tremendous amount of effort and put some pressure on the quarterbacks. But he stood out to me. DelJuan Robinson stood out to me. We gave him a chance to play a little outside, a little inside, was a factor in the football game throughout his time playing. So those two guys kind of jumped at me other than the obvious.”

(on if anyone played better than LB Zac Diles on defense) “Zac (Diles) played very, very well. I thought our safeties played well. I was impressed with the safety play. This (LB) (Kevis) Coley kid that I mentioned a couple of times, he’s starting to do some good stuff. We’re going to give him some more reps this week. He’s been impressive for (special teams coordinator) Joe (Marciano) in doing some things for us. We’re going to play him a little bit at the MIKE position this week. Those guys kind of stood out to me.”

(on if RB Ahman Green’s health affects RB Chris Brown’s starting position) “I don’t think we’ll get any better if we take that protect approach. They’ve got to play. They’ve got to get ready to play. Injuries are a part of the game, and you can’t run away from them. Chris (Brown) needs work. He got a lot of work last week. We knew we weren’t going to play him. Definitely his work will pick up this week. There might be a cautious approach because of that. When we get through and get ready to play, those guys that have had good camps and have done a good job will be the guys playing for us. It basically brings about the importance of these young players getting better. You know, Chris (Brown) and (Steve) Slaton, and I’m going to give them a chance to do that.”

(on signing another running back) “We’ve been talking about that upstairs. We’ve got a couple of issues on our plate as we head to New Orleans this week. Practice against them a couple of times. We’re trying to equip, basically. Maybe make a couple of moves here tomorrow that will help us from a practice standpoint and freshen us up. We’ve got a few options out there that we’ll discuss tonight and see what we do.”

(on possibility of signing a big-name running back) “I don’t think. There’s not too many of those guys right now. But we’re talking to a few backs out there, and we want to make sure if we sign somebody that he’s got a legitimate chance to help our team. And I think there are a couple of guys out there that hopefully they’re interested in us, but they are listening to a lot of people.”

(on if the new name for RB is Cedric Benson) “No.”

(on the defensive end position battle) “It is a good battle going on. You look at Rosevelt (Colvin), you look at N.D. (Kalu) in the same light. Smaller defensive ends that have to rush the passer well to be a factor on this team. Severe battle on each other. And as I told y'all, I thought N.D. played very, very well. Earl (Cochran) is becoming a player that’s looking more and more like a starter everyday. Anthony (Weaver) was fine with his time that he played. He’s being pushed very heavily by Earl. Earl is an up-and-coming player on this football team and continues to prove that on a weekly basis. And DelJuan (Robinson) went out there and played in the same spot. We were very encouraged with what DelJuan Robinson did."

note from Lance z at the chron.com

• David Anderson played great and showed toughness over the middle and after the catch and certainly resembled a poor man's Wes Welker, but with a mullet and a lightning bolt shaved in the side of his head. Andre Johnson, Kevin Walter and Andre Davis are all locks and my guess is that D. Anderson (coaches favorite) is headed in that direction as well. I'm guess that Jacoby Jones has a spot locked down as well, but should he? Too many people around town see him "enjoying life" a little too frequently at the clubs and he needs to show that he is going to bring something to the table other than a guy who might be good as a punt returner. I know it is only year two, but Jacoby needs to become a PRO. This is easily the deepest group of WRs the Texans have ever had and if André Davis could return punts then I don't know that it would be crazy to keep a guy like Tim Carter or even Harry Williams.

The Sunday after the Texans' 31-27 win over the New Orleans Saints, head coach Gary Kubiak talked to the media about what he liked and didn't like from the game. The biggest news of the day was that wide receiver Andre Johnson should play in Friday's game against Dallas.

Texans head coach Gary Kubiak

(on RB Steve Slaton) “(Steve) Slaton, starting with him, he played pretty darn well. He’s a player that’s getting continuously better every time we go out. He’s a much better player this week than he was last week. He was better in protections. There are still some mistakes that concern you the closer you get to the season, but it’s obvious that he can be a big help to us offensively.”

(on the game) “Looking at the special teams, there is some disappointment there. We are looking for more guys to step up. I think Harry Williams has been the ultimate bright spot on special teams. He’s been consistent; he’s making a big push for us to find a roster spot for him on this team, just by how well he’s playing on special teams. I think Nick Ferguson did some good things. Kris (Brown) continues to kick the ball well. Matt (Turk) kicked the ball well. We have to get, overall, just get better. Some of our young guys have got to come on. You look at guys like (Dominque) Barber and (Brandon) Harrison, players like that, Chris Taylor; they have to play well on special teams. I think we have a lot of room for improvement.

Looking at the offensive side of the ball, (offensive coordinator) Kyle (Shanahan) saw the same thing; we were excellent throwing the ball. We made a lot of big plays, had a couple of chances to make even a couple more if we had held up a little better in protection. Kevin Walter was exceptional. David Anderson continues to be exceptional. Up front, I thought we played pretty good. We protected the quarterback pretty good, except for maybe the first play of the game; it was probably our worst one. A lot of good things going on; Owen Daniels is playing well. Chris Brown getting some work, I know he is capable of more, but it was nice to get him some work. As far as running the ball, the disappointing thing was our biggest play in the first half got called back because of a hold. I thought we were effective, but we can be much better. So, we have to continue to work on that and get the reps for these backs as we move forward.

Our second team offense, the guys upfront continue to play well. I’ll mention (Kasey) Studdard has really played well throughout the preseason, continues to get better. (Rashad) Butler probably graded out as high as any offensive linemen we had. So the second group offensive line has been doing some good things. Sage (Rosenfels) came in and did well. Of course (running back) Slaton (Slaton) was a big part of that. I was happy to get Alex (Brink) a little bit of work. I would like to have seen him get some more, so we’ll see how that pans out in the next two weeks. But I thought he was comfortable when he was in there.

Defensively, I thought we played in spurts. We did some good things, held up well at times when we were in trouble early in the game, late in the game. But the bottom line is we have to do a better job of stopping the run. We lost contain on Reggie (Bush) there a couple of times. We have to do a better job against the run. We continue to search for some pressure. We’ve moved some people around from week one to week two. We’ll continue to do that to give some guys some opportunities to step up and put some pressure on the quarterback. Looking individually, I thought Mario (Williams) was good in the game. I think Zac Diles continues to step forward. I thought Amobi (Okoye) had his best outing in the preseason. You go to the second group, N.D. Kalu continues to push for a spot on this team. He’s rushing the passer pretty well, he is the guy applying the pressure. (Tim) Bulman played pretty darn good, came back this week and played well. Chaun Thompson, it was nice to see him get on the field and make some plays. Overall, defensively we gave up too many big plays. That will be a point of emphasis here as we move forward. There were some good things going on, a lot of young guys making some tough decisions for us. We are less than two weeks now from having to make all these really difficult decisions. It’s going to be a hard call and, hopefully, we’ll get a good look at those guys here the last two games.”

"I think he could have played last week. He practiced with us every phase of practice except for the times we were going to bang around. He’s ready to go." - Gary Kubiak on Andre Johnson(on if RB Steve Slaton will get reps with the first team this week) “Yeah, we talked about that earlier. I think he’s earned a right to get some reps with that first group. We’re going to probably go three quarters this week with our first group. Going against this team this week is as good as there is in the league, personnel-wise. So, yeah, he’ll definitely become part of that.”

(on some things we did and will do to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks) “There’s nothing in particular we are doing. We are running our defense. We are trying to evaluate these guys and see who can get there, from a one-on-one standpoint, who can create some pressure. We did call some blitzes and dogs and those types of things. That was when we are at our best pressuring, but it’s like I always tell you, in this league you have to be able to find pressure with your four downs and be sound in coverage and not put your people on an island all the time. I think the key right now is that we keep moving people around because I’m not sure that we know who is going to be there opening day right now. We’ve looked at Colvin with the first group. We’ve looked at (N.D.) Kalu with the first group. We’ve looked at Earl (Cochran), moved (Anthony Weaver) Weave around. We’re doing some things inside out with Earl (Cochran), with DelJuan (Robinson). I think we’ll just keep searching and see who steps up to the plate.”

(on if DE Rosevelt Colvin is healthy) “Yeah, he’s been fine. He’s practiced throughout camp. He’s been a one-a-day player and really just because of age and years of service more than anything else. I thought he was better this week than he was last week.”

(on the possibility of carrying six receivers rather than five because of how well Harry Williams is playing) “I think, as a coach, you go into it saying five. The way he’s playing right now we have to look real hard at keeping six, because he’s the best guy we’ve got on the field right now when we are in special teams mode. That’s a third of the game and the way he’s playing. He’s going to make us keep six, or if we keep five then somebody is in trouble.”

(on CB Jacques Reeves game) “You look at the things he does in the running game and the way he plays the game overall. We’re very pleased with that. From a coverage standpoint, he’s not going to get outrun. He’s got a lot of speed. He was right there on the big play, just got to find the football. And you know, it was a great throw. It was a perfect throw, but we have to find a way to get to that ball and knock it down. It’s kind of the same way with (Antwaun) Molden. And Reeves had a couple of nice plays, had a chance for a pick on a slant that they threw. He’s an excellent tackler. He’ll come up and do his job from that standpoint. I like the fact that he’s in position. We just have to work like heck on finding a way of getting the ball out.”

(on OT Duane Brown’s game) “He took another step forward. The first play of the game, for some reason, I’m not sure we knew it was for real. We went out there thinking we were still in practice on Wednesday afternoon. Of course Smith, he’s one of the better players in the league, and Duane and Chester (Pitts) both got beat on the first play. But after that I thought we settled down and protected the quarterback pretty good. Most of Duane’s mistakes are coming in the run game on the backside and technique and those types of things - learning how to take the proper angles in cutting people off, just the speed of the National Football League. It’s not a lack of effort; he knows what he’s doing, working hard and getting better everyday.”

(on RB Chris Taylor’s game and if he is moving to fullback) “I thought Chris did some good things. I thought vision-wise, running, a couple of times he could have been better. That comes with reps. Will he get some (time at) fullback? Let’s just say, I know that Chris can play both. Until we get to that final roster decision day, whether we keep two fullbacks or one fullback or whether we count on Chris being a fullback all the way, that decision is probably going to be made off special teams, to be honest with you, and what goes on elsewhere. I just think we need to keep working Chris where he is at. He is always going to get a few reps at fullback but he needs to step up his game on special teams too, he needs to help this team and help (special teams coach) Joe (Marciano) on special teams. He needs continued improvement.”

(on Duane Brown’s progress as a rookie) “I think he’s away ahead of any rookie, and the reason he’s ahead is because he’s been starting from day one. It’s funny, somebody asked me that after the game and I said, ‘I can’t think of anything bad he did, so that means he probably played OK.’ When you know an o-lineman is out there it’s probably that something wrong is going on. That hasn’t been the case. He’s been solid. It’s going to be a challenge every week for him. The players he’s going to play, in our division and throughout this league and go against, this week he has to go against a 3-4 (defense). He’s got to go against this team that he hasn’t seen in camp. I think it’s going to be a growing progress. But his effort and attention to detail and the way he’s becoming a pro, the progress, I would say, is way ahead of schedule.”

(on if it is good to go against 3-4 defense versus Dallas Cowboys) “There’s no doubt. We definitely need it. We try to simulate it in practice and those types of things, but unless it’s against someone who does it all of the time it’s not the same. We’ll get one of the best in the league this week that do it, and then two weeks from now we’ll get one of the greatest teams in the league that have been doing it for a long, long time. We’ll get our fill. It’s a lot of body change up for us, but we need it. Baltimore also.”

(on how he will handle WR Jacoby Jones) “Well we’re trying them all. First, off we’ve got to get the problems fixed, and it’s easy to say. Obviously we didn’t fix it from week one to week two. He’s (wide receiver Jacoby Jones) got to have a sense of urgency to get it fixed also because that’s going to take place back there somebody else is going to do it. I believe in him. He’s got a lot of ability. He can help this team, but he’s got to settle down, do his job, do it consistently and we’ve also got to have the answer if it’s not being done that way. So this week we are going to work André Davis and David Anderson with him, just even reps back there. (We) plan on probably going into the game using as a punt returner Jacoby Jones and David (Anderson). We’ll make that decision later in the week, but whoever is going to be back there has to protect the ball. I think we had a fair catch situation on the first one. He was trying to make a play, but we’ve got to protect the ball there. (He) should have made the catch on the 12 or 13-yard line to keep us from getting backed up. (There’s) a lot of responsibility there, but hey, this is the big boys and he’s got to step up, handle it and do his job.”

(on WR David Anderson playing to earn more repetitions) “I don’t know how we can keep him (Anderson) off the field right now to be honest with you. He’s played extremely well. If we lined up today, he’s going to be on the field in our three wide I can tell you that, somehow someway. It’s just the way he’s playing. He’s got a lot of confidence. (It) doesn’t surprise me from what I’ve seen in camp. His teammates have a lot of confidence in him. It’s easy to sit there and say, ‘Well, where does he fit in if Andre’s back healthy, you’ve got André Davis and Kevin (Walter). Where’s David fit in?’ I think David kind of has a little specialty about him, in the slot, doing those types of things. It’s our job as coaches to have him in position to help us win. He’s excellent after the catch as well too. Is he doing enough to get on the field really quick—yeah, at this point he sure is.”

(on if anyone in the secondary that are trying to make the team stood out) “Going to the corners, I thought Petey (DeMarcus Faggins) and Fletch (Jamar Fletcher) played well last week. They didn’t play poorly this week, but I thought they probably played a little better last week. As we continue with these young safeties, it’s going to be a very, very difficult decision. We’ve got (Dominique) Barber and (Brandon) Harrison, so we tried to get as many reps as we could looking at them. I want to see them pick up the pace on special teams. That’s important to me. We’ll talk about this tomorrow morning with them, but to say that one guy stood out would be hard to say. I will say this; we think (strong safety) Nick Ferguson played well in the game. C.C. (Brown) and Will Demps played well in the game. We’re still looking. (Derrick) Roberson did a couple of nice things. I think special teams is going to end up setting them all apart.”

(on his particular disappointment with the special teams) “Well, I would like to hope that I could walk out here after a preseason game and talk about six or seven kids on special teams and how well they played. Our point of emphasis to those guys is when you are getting second or third reps from an offensive and defensive perspective you have to stand out on special teams and not just be a guy. I’m able to stand here today and tell you Harry (Williams) is standing out. There’s no doubt about it. When you cut on the film, he is five or six yards ahead of everyone else. It’s just the way he’s playing the game. We need more of that. We’ve got to have these young kids do that. We’re expecting that from (Xavier) Adibi. He’s got a little ankle issue. He did not play last night. It happened early in the game. Some of these young kids have to be playing at that same level to help us get better.”

(on where the team is at with (LB) Chaun Thompson, (DE) N.D. Kalu, and (DE) Roosevelt Colvin) “Well, they all got opportunities to rush the passer in nickel. I think Chaun (Thompson) is not 100 percent. I think he’s getting close. You could tell last night that he can still make plays. He’s got a nose for the ball. We’ll continue to mess with our nickel this week, move it around so that we are getting reps and taking a look at all those guys. I was just glad to see Chaun get through with no setbacks. Chaun will stay isolated at the sound linebacker and then rush the nickel.”

(on FB Vonta Leach’s injury) “It’s just really a shoulder bruise. They don’t think it’s anything significant. He had basically played his snaps. He made it through the first half. He wasn’t going to play the second half anyways. I think we’re OK. There are no problems today. They thought he had full strength. He may miss a day. He may miss practice tomorrow, but I expect him to be ok.”

(on his plans with WR Andre Johnson and RB Ahman Green) “First off, we’ll proceed with Andre (Johnson) as if he’s ready to go this week. I think he could have played last week. He practiced with us every phase of practice except for the times we were going to bang around. He’s ready to go. He’s chomping at the bit. We’ll work him toward playing in Dallas, but he will have to be 110 percent to play. I expect him to be ready to go. As far as Ahman (Green), I think we knew all along we were looking at about three weeks. I don’t think there is much of a chance for him to play this week. I think we’ll push him in his practice habits this week, his effort with the trainers and those types of things, but I don’t think we’ll see him.”

(on any other injuries) “No. I think we’re OK. Tim Carter got dinged in the last game. Hopefully, he’s back on the field tomorrow. We’ll get him looked at in the morning. A couple of bumps and bruises, but other than that we should be ok.”

(on how the team has avoided turnovers on offense) “We just continue to hammer it, telling people to protect the ball. It’s been a point of emphasis since we went to camp. If you don’t turn the ball over in this league, it keeps you in football games. It keeps you within a play or two of winning every week. It’s just hopefully the fact that we continue to harp on these guys, and hopefully it’s becoming second nature. You just keep your fingers crossed and keep forward.”

Because Ahman Green could be out for another two weeks with a groin injury, the Texans are signing veteran running back Marcel Shipp to add more experience and depth to the backfield.

Shipp, who turned 30 this month, was waived by Arizona, where he played the last seven seasons after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2001.

Shipp, 5-11, 224, should be at practice Monday. He joins veterans Chris Brown, Chris Taylor, Darius Walker and rookie Steve Slaton in a crowded backfield.

One day after the Texans beat New Orleans 31-27, coach Gary Kubiak said he plans to use Slaton with the starters against the Dallas Cowboys on Friday.

“I think he’s earned the right to get some reps with the first group,” Kubiak said Sunday. “He played pretty darn well.

“He’s getting better every time we go out. He was a much better player this week than he was last week. He was better in protections. There are still some mistakes that concern you the closer you get to the season, but it’s obvious he can be a big help to us offensively.”

Coach Gary Kubiak said he wants to get rookie running back Steve Slaton some playing time with the first team Friday at Dallas. Chris Brown will start against the Cowboys, and Slaton will come off the bench.

“I’m happy about it,” Slaton said about getting a chance to play with the starters. “I’ve been working hard trying to gain their (coaches’) confidence.

“I think I’ve gotten a lot better. I’ve spent some time trying to work on what the coaches have been telling me about, like blitzes. It’s only been a couple of months, so I have a lot to work on.”

Green still mending

Coach Gary Kubiak said there’s a good chance running back Ahman Green won’t play in the rest of the preseason because of the groin injury he suffered against Denver.

General manager Rick Smith said the team signed veteran running back Marcel Shipp so Chris Taylor can get more reps at fullback. Taylor had to share Green’s reps in practice.

Chris Brown, Steve Slaton, Taylor and Darius Walker will be joined by Shipp, who is playing in his eighth season.

“We’re not going back to one guy,” Kubiak said. “We’re going to work them all. We are going to see how it pans out among all of them.

“We may end up playing with two or three of those guys, by committee so to speak, if Ahman’s not ready to go.”

Head coach Gary Kubiak

(on if WR Harry Williams had his surgery) “No. We have his family with him there in the Dallas area, and he is scheduled for surgery tomorrow. He’s in good spirits and after his surgery tomorrow, we’ll have our doctors address the surgery.”

(on if anything has changed since last night regarding WR Harry Williams) “No. Nothings changed. (Texans Vice President, Communications) Tony (Wyllie) has a statement from the doctors.”

(on what he liked and what he did not like about last night’s game versus Dallas) “Let me start with the offense. First off, offensively the big bright spots were the play of Chris Taylor and (Steve) Slaton. (They) got put in a situation against a dang good football team where they basically were the starters in the game, even though Chris started the game. They both rose to the occasion. They played well in protection, which is something we had been concerned about, and Dallas came after us a lot. We did not give up a sack, and they ran the ball extremely well and both of them got better as the game went on. So, that’s the thing that we’re feeling best about today on the offensive side of the ball. Our receivers continue to play well. (WB) Matt (Schaub) got off to a slow start as we all know, but his play and the way he played after the slow start was the thing that got us back in the football game and gave us a chance. The thing that we did not do well, I was disappointed with how we protected the quarterback. We did not give up a sack, but a lot of that credit has to go to some of the backs, and the way that our quarterbacks found a way to get rid of the football. We can protect a lot better. We can play a lot better inside, and so those were the things that I was disappointed with offensively. I was also impressed at how we ran the ball as a group. Once again, we stayed committed to it, and as the game went on I thought we got better at doing it.

"I was also impressed at how we ran the ball as a group. Once again, we stayed committed to it, and as the game went on I thought we got better at doing it." - Gary KubiakDefensively, when I look at the defensive it’s hard to find a lot of positives, to be honest with you. They moved the ball on us very well. The thing that we did extremely well was get turnovers. It just goes to show in this league if you don’t turn it over and you do get some turnovers, you’ve got a chance to win every game. The way they moved the ball on us, the turnovers kept us in the football game and gave us a chance to win. So, that’s the biggest positive. The things that continue to be very positive are Mario (Williams) continues to play extremely well. We’ve got to continue to find him some help up front. N.D. Kalu continues to be the best finisher in the pass rush mode for us. It’s what he does. Zac Diles is becoming a fine player. I think doing some really good things. (DeMarcus) Faggins really played well. Petey (DeMarcusFaggins) came in and probably played as well as anybody on the back end. They moved the ball too well on us. We’ve got to do a lot better job. We did come after them some with our linebackers, and we were ineffective with that. There are plenty of things we’ve got to get corrected. We have to get some other guys some opportunities. As I’ve told you all, we’ve been moving some people around. I think DelJuan (Robinson) deserves some opportunities with the first group. I think Jessie Nading deserves some opportunities to rush the passer more. So, we’ll get those guys more involved this week.”

(on if anything that happened last night will change his philosophy about the last game) “No. No it won’t. If you’re asking me do I think, ‘OK, now we have to go back and play our defense for a half?’ No, I don’t feel that way. I believe in the process. I think they got a bunch of reps last night. It was nice and warm. So, the work that they got, for me, prepared them for opening game. We have so many decisions to make that if we don’t go out there and battle to answer these questions here over the course of the next four quarters on Thursday night, then I think we’re taking a shot in the dark. We’ve got to see how some of these guys will separate themselves in some of these battles we’ve got going on. We’ve got to see out on the football field how they take care of themselves. So, it won’t change what we do. We do have a lot of young guys that are considered starters around here that are going to play, but there will be a group of guys that won’t play much if at all.”

(on if RB Ahman Green or RB Chris Brown will play) “Well, I don’t think Ahman (Green) is ready to play yet. I’m hoping that he works this week and hoping he gets on the practice field kind of like Andre (Johnson) has done and goes back to work. Chris Brown right now, I think, would be very iffy still coming off the injection, still as sore today. So, we’ll see day to day with him, but I would think it doesn’t look very good for those two.”

(on if anyone stood out on special teams this week) “Yeah. You go back this week and take a look. I think the (Dominique) Barber kid did some good things. Brandon Harrison really played well on special teams. He’s becoming a much better player. He did some good things for us. Joel Dreessen continues to do some good things. I thought Jacoby (Jones) bounced back and was better this week. He needs to continue to protect the ball but stepped up and did some good things. Kris (Brown) continues to kick the ball well. Our return teams were much better than they had been throughout the preseason. There was some improvement there. A couple of young receivers came in. LeRon McCoy and the (Mark) Simmons kid came in and did some really good things effort wise late in the game covering kicks. “

(on if he considered kicking the extra point instead of going for two at the end of the game) “No. We had talked about it before. I told (offensive coordinator/quarterbacks) Kyle (Shanahan) if we scored, we’ll go for two. We had a few snaps out there, and we felt good about our two point play. The way they were playing us in the red zone, so we felt good about it. We had a chance to make that play, and we still had a chance to get the ball back there in the end. That’s a tough call. That third down call with the game on the line, but they made it so we were unable to get the ball back.”

(on if the video showed that the Cowboys were off sides on the two-point conversion play) “It sure looks like it, but if they don’t throw that flag their not off sides. That’s the way it goes.”

(on the status of G Chester Pitts) “He’s day-to-day. He came off the ankle in New Orleans. We tried to push him last week, and it wasn’t responding as well as we would have liked. Naturally, he didn’t play last night so he’s gotten a lot of rest. So, we’ll come out tomorrow. Tomorrow will be more of a conditioning type of practice for us, and well find out where he’s at. I’d like to see Chester play this week. I think he needs to play. So, we’ll push him to play. But at the same time, we’ll have to evaluate where’s he’s at each day with his ankle.”

(on Jameel Cook’s status with the team) “Jameel (Cook), I will visit with him sometime today. With Jameel, I’m still trying to evaluate Jameel as a football player and what he’s done here and camp and where we are headed as a football team. The other issues, we will continue to work with him on those and sort those out as we continue to gather information. My main concern right now is dealing with him as a football player and making a decision on him as a football player on this team.”

(on what happened with the way the safeties played last night) “I think we didn’t tackle very well. That was as a defense, I wouldn’t just say just the safeties. I think we can tackle better. We had a few communications problems back there. C.C. (Brown) has become a much better player this year through the preseason. I don’t think it was Will’s (Demps) best outing this preseason, but he has been consistent. Nick (Ferguson) continues to be consistent. What we’ve got to do this week is take those two young kids in Glenn (Earl) and Nick (Ferguson) and they are going to have to play a great deal of this football game, because normally you go into the season with four safeties. We are a big candidate right now to maybe go with five. Either way you look it, there’s a difficult decision to make there. We’ll try to let them sort it out on the field.”

(on if he is disappointed that FB Jameel Cook was driving around with an expired registration sticker) “Guys make mistakes and we have to deal with them when they happen.”

(on if he is concerned about the pass rush) “I think it’s easy for me to say we have to get it fixed. There is always going to be issues. We are going to stand up here every week and nothing is ever going to perfect. Do we need to get better at rushing the passer? Yes. I like to think of it as pressuring the passer. We didn’t give up any sacks last night either. So Dallas didn’t have any, but they did make us get rid of that ball very quickly a lot with some of the things that they did. That’s a thing that concerns me. I think that he (Cowboys QB Tony Romo) was able to hold the ball too long. Various times there were some routes that were completed that aren’t fair to the secondary. Those routes belong to the defensive line and the people rushing the passer. We can’t give them that kind of time. There are some good things going on. Mario (Williams) has been exceptional, as I told you. N.D. (Kalu) has done some good things. I think what we are searching for is compliments to those players. We are taking a look at a lot of guys. We aren’t going to panic and start zero blitzing people to try to make the quarterback get rid of the ball because if we start to do that then I don’t think we are going to be a very good defensive football team. We are trying to stay committed to what we are doing through the preseason, trying to find out the guys who can do it and help us. Naturally, if you have to, you have to find ways to bring more than they got. We just have to continue to push and continue to evaluate those players. It’s a difference maker. And those guys (Cowboys offensive line) are good up front, let’s not forget that. Those guys up front are darn good. But any quarterback who’s able to hold the ball that long is going to find a place to go with it, and that guys a Pro Bowl player so he’s not going to make any mistakes.”

(on what he sees when he is watching DE Mario Williams) “I think it would be easy for him (Williams) to get frustrated. He was doubled, tripled sometimes last night and still found ways to be the guy that got there. He’s making some great plays in the run game; he had the strip on the fumble. There’s a lot of attention paid to him, and the thing that I like about him is I don’t see him getting frustrated at all - ‘I understand this, understand that they are going to be chipping, understand they are going to be doubling me but I’m going to keep playing and I’m going to find a way to make a play.’ I think that will eventually be the key to his career - why he’ll become such a great player - because he doesn’t get frustrated with schemes that are basically put in to take care of him.”

(on CB Jacques Reeves and T Duane Brown) “Jacques (Reeves), you know, the ball is finding him a bunch right now. I could sit here and say the same thing I said the other night. He was in position again last night for a couple of plays, he was right there. He doesn’t quite get the ball out. It’s something that we are concentrating on him with. I like his effort. I like how he plays. I think he’s going to be a fine player for us but right now it seems like a lot of other things are coming his way. He’s just not making the play on the ball. I think at the same time, whenever you do make a play or two on the ball, and you’re a corner, the confidence, all those things, the switch can flip and go the other way. We have a lot of confidence in him. We are going to keep pushing him, I like the way he goes about his business. I think he’s going to play good football for us. As far as Duane Brown, his process has been exceptional. He just continues to get better. He went against a great player last night. Early in the game, I think the size of that guy and the speed, that type of scheme, the 3-4, had him a little off whack. I’ve said this a couple of times when he’s played early in games, but as the game went on, he adjusts to the speed of the game, he adjusts to the player he’s playing against. He gets better throughout the game and we really like his progress to this point.”

(on when they will make the roster moves) “We’ve got until Tuesday to get down to the 75 limit, by Tuesday. I don’t know. It could be one tomorrow, one Monday. It could be all Tuesday. We’ll see. We have a lot of work to do tonight and tomorrow and some decisions to make. We have to be final from that standpoint by Tuesday.”

(on if anyone played well in the pass protection) “Yeah I thought both of our tackles played well. I thought (tackle) Eric (Winston) had his best outing. Eric Winston had his best outing. I think (center) Chris Meyers continues to be consistent. There’s some good things going on in there but we didn’t protect as well as we’ve been protecting.”

(on how G Kasey Studdard played) “Up and down. Up and down. He’s (Studdard) a high effort guy that I always talk to you about. He makes some plays that are above and beyond the call of duty, then gets confused and makes some plays that you can’t get away with in this league. It’s inconsistency, but there were a lot of reps for him to learn from. His effort will never be questioned. Settling down and being consistent is the key to him becoming a starter.”

(on if he is happy with what he saw from WR Andre Johnson) “Yeah, I felt fine about it. I know he was frustrated. He wanted the ball. He wanted to make some plays. It feels like he hasn’t been out there much. We actually tried to get it to him early in the game, get him to touch it, but they took him away. But I felt good and I felt like a quarter and a half was enough, especially on that turf. I know he’s ready to go; we’ll work him real hard this week. He’s a competitor and he was wanting the ball, wanting to make some plays.”

One thing I seem to keep noticing about Reeves, is that he seems to do a good job of sticking with the receiver, but then he doesn't turn and spot the ball to be able to knock it away. He's given up several plays where he was in as tight of coverage as you could have wished for, yet he never saw the ball and so the receiver made the catch anyway.

Kubiak seems to agree with you. I think the ability to stay with the WRs is what the texans paid for/ see in Reeves, but the inability to also play the ball is going to keep people throwing at him.

Texans' cuts to get to 75.

The Texans announced their roster moves Tuesday to get under the NFL-mandated 75-man roster limit.

The team released fullback Jameel Cook and wide receiver Tim Carter, and waived guard Mark Fenton. Also, the team officially placed wide receiver Harry Williams on the reserve injured list along with offensive lineman Scott Jackson, who has suffered from plantar fasciitis this preseason.

"First of all, as a procedural matter, we waived (Jackson) and he will revert to injured reserve," general manager Rick Smith said. "The issue was that he had struggled all training camp basically with an injury to his foot, and we tried to treat it and just last week realized that it was a little worse off than we thought, so we put him in a boot and realized that he won’t progress quick enough, so we put him on injured reserve."

Finally, cornerback Dunta Robinson was placed on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, meaning he will miss at least the first six weeks of the regular season. He has been making steady progress in his rehabilitation from severe knee and hamstring injuries that he suffered at Oakland last season.

Cook joined the Texans in 2006 and played in 10 games that year. This past season, as a backup to Vonta Leach, Cook participated in every game and contributed on special teams.

A former second-round pick of the New York Giants, Carter signed with Houston in May. He caught one pass for 16 yards in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos.

Fenton spent last season on the Denver Broncos’ practice squad and signed with the Texans in May.

The thing that we did not do well, I was disappointed with how we protected the quarterback. We did not give up a sack, but a lot of that credit has to go to some of the backs, and the way that our quarterbacks found a way to get rid of the football.
Yeah, I really agree with kubiak's comments here. We may not have given up any sacks but I saw Schuab take quite a few hits right after he got rid of the ball. If the O'line doesn't continue to improve Schuab's going to get clobbered this year. That isn't comforting considering he still has questions about his ability stay healthy.

Texans running back Ahman Green has agreed to restructure his contract this season.

Green, who has not played since suffering a pulled goin muscle in the first preseason game, would have made a base salary of 3.8 million, and counting bonuses, could have made as much as 4.2 million.

Now, Green's base salary will be 1.8 million, which frees up 2 million in salary-cap dollars.

To get Green to agree to redo his deal, the Texans are giving him $200,000 for every game in which he's active this season, starting with the second game of the year. That means Green can make three million if he stay's healthy for every game.

By agreeing to restructure the second year of the four-year contract he signed in 2007, Green is showing that he believes he will be healthy this season.

The last two years of Green's contract were not changed. In 2009, he has a 4.8 million base and $500,000 bonus. In 2010, he has a 4.3 million base and a $500,000 bonus.

I cannot agree with the bolded statement. I suspect Green was weighing these options:1. Get cut and join Alexander, Davenport, Benson, et al in free agent limbo, unlikely to be resigned by any team = $0.

2. Restructure, make the team, and get $1.8M this year, plus incentives, plus keep alive the out years of the contract, even though the chances of him seeing those 2009+ salaries are unlikely.

Looks like a nobrainer choice for #2, regardless of whether or not he thinks he will be healthy.

Aside from the injuries, how does Andre look at camp - Is he in shape, put on weight or are any type of fitness issues?

RARELY is a thread structured so well and such a great source of cogent, relevant information.

This thread should get an award or something.

Very telling to me that they did not restructure the last two years. Means Ahman will not be a Texan past this season no matter what.

The few camps that were public I was able to make it to, AJ looked like himself. Head and shoulders above the other receivers.
