Lions vs. Bengals Preseason 7:30 Eastern (1 Viewer)

I'll be watching this game, so feel free to post what you'd like to know about any players or comment on play during the game.

Heading into the game, the defenses are two of the weakest in the league so one would think that some of the offensive players would be able to make some plays in this game.

For me, I'm looking to see if the Lions can establish any kind of running game. This is the entire key for Lions success this season, and if they can't run against Cinci, who can they run against?

Last week I thought I saw Carson Palmer look Ben Utecht's way, I'd like to see if that's going to be a trend. Even though I'm not in love with Utecht, he could be a sleeper in that offense.

Yep. Kevin Smith info.

looking for Megatron to DESTROY some CBs :goodposting:
FYI...Calvin and Roy are only expected to play 10-12 snaps per the local beat writers. Obviously, the offensive line will have my attention. This will be their second game using the zone blocking scheme. Kevin Smith is almost certain to be the starter. It appears Aveion Cason is close to a lock to make the team because of the return game and other special teams. That pretty much leaves Bell, Calhoun, and Pinner fighting for one spot. My gut say they keep Bell because he has started before and even though he is not the best, the alternatives look pretty bad. Stanton is another player of interest. He stepped up his performance in practice following the Giants game, so his confidence seems to be rising. Defensively, I want to see Dizon and Alama-Francis play. I'm also interested in seeing whether the front 4 can generate a pass rush and want to see how the revamped secondary handles Chad and Housh. As for the Bengals, I'm interested in seeing Perry again after a very impressive game last week. Also want to see Rudi play. The WRs after the big 2 are next. Whoever lands the WR3 spot could have value, although my enthusiasm for that is less now since it appears Utecht will have a big role. Defensively, Rivers and Brandon Johnson are of interest, especially seeing how they line up.

What has been the deal with Housh, does he have an injury right now?
Houshmandzadeh is still nursing what by most accounts is a minor hamstring issue. He reportedly has not been able to pass strength tests yet, but doesn't appear to be at all concerned about his conditioning or chemistry if he doesn't return to practice until shortly before the season. May be a "contract year" type injury as well.He won't play tonight.

I'll be watching to see how quickly Bobbie Williams gets snaps at center, how well Rivers looks against the first team, if the Bengal corners can hang against the Lion receivers in man coverage and if Perry continues to look good for the Bengals.

Very interested to see how Dizon handles himself for the Lions and if their backs can run well against a shaky Bengal DL.

Lions v Bengals, it's a Super Bowl preview baby!

OK, what I really care about is whether Utecht is going to be as big a part of the O as CIN is saying or whether that's just talk and they'll ignore the TE like they have in years past.

I also have this tiny little voice in my head that says "pay attention to DeDe Dorsey, he'll end up the starter before the year is through." Just a tiny little voice though, whispering somewhere within all that mostly empty gray matter in there.

I don't think it's talk. The packages are there from what I've seen in camp and during the preseason games so far and there's no candidate actively taking control of the 3rd WR job. Dorsey is an interesting player, but he's still fourth in the pecking order. His injury early in camp is going to cost him any significant snaps against first or second teamers. He's going to be very tough to cut though. The chances of getting him back on the roster down the line a third time are exceedingly slim.

Regarding Utecht, he is a much better pass catcher than any recent Bengal TE, so the past use of TEs is not necessarily a predictor of how they will use Utecht...not to mention what Jene said about them lacking a solid 3rd WR.

This is the key to the Lion's season...can they run block? I think the answer will be yes with the addition of Cherilus and Gaines...
Cherilus did have some penalties, but I was impressed with his blocking. He just has to cut the penalties. I expect a lot of 2 TE sets with Campbell and Gaines. Both are very good run blockers and are better receivers than given credit for. I think the Lions will throw to the TEs more this year to keep defenses honest. But it is all about how effective they can be running the ball. The new zone blocking scheme takes time to learn, so I still think they may be a bit ragged tonight.

Bunch of Bengals I want to see:

Chris Perry--He has real deal talent. Hey, Fred Taylor shook the injury bug once, too.

Andre Caldwell and Jerome Simpson--Be nice if one of these two stepped up. My money is on Caldwell.

Utecht--Even if no one steps up at 3rd WR, I am not sure Utecht will be an every week starter type.

Dhani Jones--Can he be a tackle monster on a bad defense?

Pat Sims and Jason Shirley--There's room for a young DT to get some work.

I'd like to hear how if Calvin looks 100% healthy? getting doubled? etc
AFAIK Calvin has been 100% for some time now. You see him last week? Looked pretty healthy. I'm pretty sure his ADP will only rise as more people see him this preseason and he won't be a steal by the time I draft on Labor Day.

He won't be a steal anyway. Pretty sure everyone in your league is aware of Megatron.

I felt like a problem has been Carson not throwing deep to Chad. I'd love to see them come out of the gates and go bomb, bomb, bomb. Maybe this goofy offseason has put Chad in his place and he's ready to get for real.

Thanks for the info, I have to make a decision in a keeper league next week, I don't want to keep him if this is going to be a ongong issue...

Since I'm up here in Canada I would appreciate if anyone could direct me to any online links/radio broadcasts/etc. as I'd like to check this game out. TiA!

What I'm saying is that he's a steal at his ADP before the preseason started, and that after preseason his ADP will be alot higher. Yes I know everyone is "aware" of 2007 #2 pick CJ Megatron, especially in my money league here in the Detroit area.

Didn't mean to come off as a doosh there. My confusion came because I don't think he's a steal at his ADP.

I have Carson as a keeper, after his first preseason game, he did not look that sharp in his reads and throws. I'm looking for a security blanket, so if you could let us know how he looks when he is under center... that would rock!

Well boys, here we go...

Rudi out, Perry in

By GEOFF HOBSON

6:05 p.m.

Running back Rudi Johnson has been scratched for the second straight game of the preseason, but for the first time Chris Perry gets the start Sunday night when the Bengals play the Lions at Paul Brown Stadium. < P>Pregame buzz on the field is that Johnson's hamstring tightened following a couple of practices last week and that he didn't work Friday during the club's last practice at Georgetown College.

In another change from the opening night lineup in Green Bay, Marcus Maxwell got the start in place of wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh instead of Antonio Chatman.

That is not good news for Rudi Johnson and his owners if that buzz is true. However, I don't know how there can't be a little truth to it since the guy isn't playing......again. I'll see if they say anything on the broadcast later.

Kevin Smith is starting, gets a 3 yard gain.

Roy Williams caught about a 13 yard pass but he was called for offensive pass interference.

Kevin Smith on 2nd and 17 gets 16 yards on a nice run up the middle. He was very patient, looked good on that run.

On 3rd down and 1, Kevin Smith is stuffed.....not his fault, 2 guys just met him in the backfield.

Nice, keep the updates coming. :goodposting:

I'm hoping Perry doesn't look good tonight so the guy I offered a trade to for Perry will accept it.
Bengals | Team to use RB-by-committee approachSun, 17 Aug 2008 12:46:42 -0700Chick Ludwig, of the Dayton Daily News, reports the Cincinnati Bengals will use a running back-by-committee approach in 2008. RBs Rudi Johnson, Chris Perry and Kenny Watson will all share snaps.--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Looks like RBBC, so I temper what you expect from Perry

Lions picked the ball off on 3rd down and 9. Kelly basically grabbed the ball from Chad.

Chad Johnson landed awkward and is hurt. How bad, not sure. He walked off with help and is holding his side I believe.

Lions first play, a 9 yard slant to Calvin Johnson.

2nd down and 1, Calvin Johnson wide open for a TD.

The dude is a beast............32 yard TD I believe, freaken monster.
