Just heard on local radio...........SJax owners can breathe easy. :goodposting:

From Bernie Miklasz (ST.Louis Post Dispatch Columnist) as posted on his messageboard:

This just in:

Jackson is ending his holdout...

Jay Zygmunt got the call a short while ago...

Jackson will practice with the team tomorrow...

No contract yet -- but a team source tells me it won't take long to get it done, they are close, and both sides are confident that a deal will be reached soon.

Great news.

About time!!

With Steve Smith out for me for the first 2 weeks that would have been all I needed, to have SJ out for 2 as well. Hope he was working out ...... :lmao: :lmao:

Roto just confirmed it as well:

"Steven Jackson has decided to end his holdout and will report to the Rams on Wednesday evening.

He will resume practicing on Friday. The sides have not agreed to a new contract, but Jackson is confident enough an agreement will be reached to report to the team. He has 18 days to get up to speed with the offense, which is plenty in our opinion. Jackson's fines for missing camp totaled $408,132.

Still want no parts of him or any other STL players this year.
I think almost every other player on that offense represents value, aside from SJax. If the line can stay healthy, I think the Rams players can bounce back in a big way.Any offense that is playing the Cardinals, Seahawks at home, and the 49ers weeks 14-15-16 is worth looking at very hard.

This is extremely good news. He has more than 2 weeks to get into game shape and work with his teammates. Not optimal, but it could have been a lot worse.

Unfortunately, you are probably right.I heard an interesting quote from Saunders though in regards to McMichael. He was quoted as telling him that the TE on his team was one of the tops in the league every year he has coached.

 they have a great schedule overall
So did the 2006 Seahawks.I'm about 80% sure the 2008 Rams are going to be awful. This doesn't make me happy.
you sound like most st. louis fans at the moment. They have as good a shot as anyone in that division imo.

I could see a slow start, but from weeks 9-16 that looks pretty good right now.

Week 1 @PHI

Week 2 NYG

Week 3 @SEA

Week 4 BUF

Week 5 bye

Week 6 @WAS

Week 7 DAL

Week 8 @NWE

Week 9 ARI

Week 10 @NYJ

Week 11 @SFO

Week 12 CHI

Week 13 MIA

Week 14 @ARI

Week 15 SEA

Week 16 SFO

Week 17 @ATL

sjax stays in great shape. He will be in top shape when he arrives. They expect to get a long term deal ironed out within 24-48 hrs. The o-line already looks better. Take sjax in top 5 with confidence. Holt's knee is 100% too. has has been seen dunking basketballs recently and said his knee hasn't felt this good in a few years. The Rams could be a very suprising team this year. Their starting D looked great last week too.

:bag: I hope it was worth it for him. So what exactly did he accomplish with his holdout? What will he get now that he couldn't get before when they told him they won't renegotiate with him until he reports?

i'm not good with names, especially OLinemen, but i thought two starters were injured and already out for an extended period of time if not the whole year....do i have it wrong?

I'm not sure that's a lot of money to him.Furthermore, I wouldn't be surprised if his new deal would forgive or make up for the $400,000 he is scheduled to be fined.

i think it was one starter for the year, one backup

Guard Mark Setterstrom and Tackle Brad Gorin are both out for the year........both backups. They did both start at times last year........but who didn't as the Rams had to use 13 different offensive lineman due to injuries.

That O-line still scares me a lot. Still not sure whether I'll go with S-Jax or Larry Johnson.
Something tells me you have Larry Johnson ranked too high.
I'm sure I have him ranked higher than most people. Or maybe S-Jax lower than most. Probably a little of both. The Rams have Bulger and Holt to put their surrounding offensive talent higher than that of KC's, but Bulger is always good for some missed time and Bowe is certainly improving. But I think both teams have a mess on their offensive lines and frankly I think that S-Jax is more likely to miss time than Larry Johnson.

And I seem to remember hearing that Pace isn't 100% either. And he really hasn't been for about 3 or 4 years now. I'm not sure that he has much left in the tank. That O-line is a major concern with me. The FBG offensive line rankings seem to agree with my concerns.

I'm generally optimistic when it comes to "my" sports teams but I also try to stay grounded in reality. The reality is:The offensive line hasn't looked good in well over a year.Bulger also looks bad and scared in the pocket. He seems to have happy feet.Bruce is gone, an although older, it will be tough to replace his leadership.Linehan lost the players last year. Respect is earned and once lost at this level is next to impossible to earn back. The first team D is having trouble stopping the second team running game. Again. They have questionable talent at DB and half of them are hurt.Looks like another long year.

Yeah I'm not sure why such a basic concept like value is so often virtually ignored on a football junkie board...Some of the WR's going off the board a round before Holt are ridiculous imo.

Rams had an awful Oline last year and that didn't stop Sjax from tearing up ####e when he got back from injury.

I'm happy as ##### to get him at the 12 spot...

Just my luck. I'm drafting tomorrow night and was wondering how far he would drop (still doubt it that he would drop to me at #12 but I was hoping). Oh well, glad to see him report anyway.

@ 4 westy, s jax or addai?
Depends upon your scoring system, for the most part. IN a PPR league, it's B-West; no further discussion necessary. However, if you're a "Nervous Nellie", and can't deal with the dreaded "game-day decision" that's inevitable with Westy up to 5 minutes before game day, choose between Jackson and Addai. If you are looking for the "safe" (and there's no such thing in FF) pick where you can factor in 1400 total yards and 12 TDs, take Addai. If you want a home-run hitter, take Jackson.

Not necesarily. Sjax did catch 90 balls and lead the league in yards from scrimmage in 2006. I see him putting up similar numbers this year. OC Saunders wants to give sjax many touches, and I mean many.

Has Jackson ever had a stellar OFF line? Pace seems to get hurt ever year.

There is a reason Jackson is listed in top five in almost all preseason rakings. He is a beast and can score a lot of fantasy points (no matter how crappy his team is).

Grab him when available. I would only take LT and Westbrook over him.

Very valid point. Though I believe the difference will be with Al Saunders calling the plays, the Rams will be much more run-oriented. And no one runs more inside the 20s than a Saunders-coached offense (case in point: Padre Holmes with the Chiefs).

Sjax ordeal reminds me a lot of Jamal Anderson's situation long ago. Was a top RB, held out, came in late...soon to be injured.

latest column by rams beat writer jim thomas, dated 8-21... not sure there is any "new" news here, but reiterates what we already suspected... jackson was prompted to come because a new deal is in place & his signing is expected to be immanent... from yesterday (wed), should be 24-48 hours at the latest...

ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

08/21/2008

His 27-day holdout over, it's back to work for Pro Bowl running back Steven Jackson. By the time Jackson arrived in St. Louis late Wednesday night, his contract extension was all but a done deal.

"In principle, it's agreed to," Jackson said.

Once a few more details are ironed out today, Jackson, said, "We'll be pretty much done."

Jackson said the original stalemate was a matter of "just philosophy." He added, "We just had two different ways — how we were thinking, where we wanted to go on a contract. And the Rams, the way they were thinking. Their philosophy. That's where it came to a standstill."

Once talks broke off on July 25, the first day of training camp at Concordia University Wisconsin, Jackson said there was a long period without dialogue with the Rams.

"But once things started to recommence late last week, we got it done," Jackson said.

Once things reached a point, where Jackson felt a new deal was a real possibility, he decided to report.

"Things really got hot and heavy (Wednesday), and that's when I booked the flight," Jackson said. "When you're talking about this kind of money, there's going to be some kind of gripes and concerns. In negotiations, no one gets 100 percent what they want, so it was just the two of us coming to an agreement on some things."

Because of the risk of injury and the relatively shorter career of NFL players, second contracts are always important for players in the NFL.

"Especially for a running back," Jackson said.

So Jackson wanted to make sure he had peace of mind about the deal.

"It's definitely something I'm proud of and I can live with," Jackson said.

Now it's a matter of getting Jackson up to speed in time for the Rams' regular-season opener Sept. 7 in Philadelphia.

"It will be a challenge physically more than mentally," coach Scott Linehan said. "It would be different (mentally) if he were a rookie, but he's familiar with the offense from his participation in the offseason program."

Jackson's agent, Eugene Parker, informed the Rams on Wednesday afternoon that Jackson had agreed to report to Rams Park as a show of good faith in contract negotiations. With the nearly month-long stalemate over, Parker and Rams president of football operations-general manager Jay Zygmunt worked through the afternoon and into the evening on an extension.

"We're glad he's coming in, and we look forward to him being a Ram for a long time, and getting a deal done," Zygmunt said.

According to league sources, the Rams offered a seven-year, $50 million extension in late July, a deal that included $17 million in guaranteed money.

The dollars probably will be jiggled around somewhat, but the final numbers won't be dramatically different. Sources familiar with the negotiations said it was more a matter of how the dollars would be structured in the final contract.

Jackson is believed to have wanted more guaranteed money, more money in the first four years of the contract, and incentives and/or escalators that could increase the back end of the deal if he performed at a high level in the earlier years of the contract.

Jackson must first pass a physical before he can practice with the team, but that is expected to be a routine matter. There's a chance Jackson could be on the field this afternoon, but at the latest, he will practice Friday, which is basically a walk-through preceding Saturday's home exhibition contest against the Baltimore Ravens.

"I've been working out, keeping a low profile — staying away from sports radio and talk and all that kind of stuff," Jackson said. "I was in Vegas the entire time — at mom's and dad's house, taking in their love."

Even though Linehan said Jackson should catch up on the playbook quickly — he had practice scripts at his disposal during the team's time at Concordia University Wisconsin to follow along — he is expected to spend extra time in the meeting room once he reports. Then, it's a matter of getting into football shape.

"I'm sure he's going to be 'amped,'" center Brett Romberg said. "He's going to have some nice fresh legs. I'm sure he's in great shape. He's going to feel pretty good."

The danger, of course, is in trying to do too much too quickly, risking the risk of soft tissue injuries, such as a hamstring pull that could set Jackson back a few weeks if he's not careful.

At most, Jackson will have nine or 10 practices before the Philadelphia game, with about three of those being of the walk-through variety. As for Jackson's availability against the Ravens, Linehan said that was "definitely a long shot."

The Governor's Cup game Aug. 28 against Kansas City is a stronger possibility, but the starting units traditionally see little or no playing time in the exhibition finale. It's all but a certainty that Linehan will not play Jackson behind the second offensive line.

For nearly four weeks, Jackson was unwilling to report without a new contract; and the Rams were unwilling to negotiate unless Jackson reported. But when the stalemate ended, Zygmunt informed Linehan following Wednesday's practice. The news spread quickly at Rams Park, and several players learned Jackson was reporting before they left work early Wednesday evening.

"I'm excited, no question about it," wide receiver Torry Holt said. "I know he's excited. I hope he (gets) what he wants as far as his contract. So I look forward to getting him in (today) and going to work. It still gives us a couple weeks before we go to Philly and get ready to play them."

Offensive tackle Alex Barron said: "It makes us feel good to have our guy in."
