I've seen McGowan really talked up around here, but it looks like he may not be the starting SS.

Can anyone shed some light on this murky situation? Is he worth a late round pick or is it better to stay away for now?

Any thoughts are appreciated?

ETA: the following quote-

"Danieal Manning is no longer the primary nickel back. and the only player with experience in the role is Brandon McGowan, so logic dictates he'll take over there, allowing Kevin Payne to step in at strong safety. That might not be the end of the moves. McGowan and Payne split time at strong safety last week against San Francisco, and coach Lovie Smith beamed when talking about the second-year player from Louisiana-Monroe. Smith was adamant the Bears draft Payne in 2007. It could be he's taking over at strong safety in the nickel as well as the base defense, and Thursday's preseason finale at Cleveland will be telling."

I don't want to wait until Thursday. I know some of you FBGs have a good feel for how this will shake out. Talk it up please...

the Bears defense looked awful against the 49ers so I'm guessing they are shaking things up a bit. I mentioned Payne as a player to watch and the staff seems to love him, but I think McGowan will be able to hold him off for the starting SS job. They have some young CBs they will likely use at the nickel CB spot first.

Bears Look To Switch Things Up In Secondary

Forgive me, as I do not know how to quote things the proper way in the forums. This looks like trouble to those of us that are taking serious the #13 ranking in John Norton's safety projections....

Any thoughts on this?

McGowan is a risk/reward type of selection in fantasy leagues this year. Assuming he can hold off the challenge from Payne for the starting job and stay healthy, he should put up very good numbers. But, he has a history of getting banged up and he's a free agent after this year so the team could decide to go with Payne at some point if they feel like he's the long-term solution, particularly if the team struggles like many expect them to. It sounds like McGowan could still wind up playing as the SS in base packages and then move over to the slot CB role in the nickel with Payne coming in to play SS. McGowan is better in coverage but Payne is probably the bigger hitter.

What to watch for Thursday--the secondary

Typically, there's not much that you can call riveting viewing in a fourth preseason game. I've always said if you've got season tickets, cross your fingers that the third preseason game is at Soldier Field. At least you get to attend (or sell your seats) a game that has some semblance of a regular-season affair.

That being said, the preseason finale against Cleveland at the end of the summer in 2005 carried at least some interest. It marked the first start for rookie Kyle Orton after Chad Hutchinson had bombed out following Rex Grossman's broken ankle.

Worth watching when the Bears take the field Thursday night at Cleveland will be how the secondary is deployed. Don't expect the first-team units to be on the field long, but Danieal Manning made it known change is in the air when he was asked about the departure of Ricky Manning Jr., the former nickel back.

"Right now they are moving some stuff around,'' Danieal Manning said. ``They said they are going to try something different. Some stuff might change.''

Brandon McGowan is the only member of the secondary with any experience as a nickel cornerback. It's a hybrid linebacker/defensive back position and he's stout vs. the run. He figures to take over there with Danieal Manning getting nudged aside in his bid to replace Ricky Manning Jr., who happens to be a distant cousin. That would allow the Bears to get Kevin Payne on the field at strong safety.

More compelling will be whether or not the change at strong safety in the nickel defense carries over to the base defense and Payne replaces McGowan there. Don't rule it out. Coach Lovie Smith is high on Payne and he split time against San Francisco with the first team. How things shake out in the defensive backfield will be interesting.
As I mentioned in the sleeper thread and in the camp updates, Payne is absolutely a player to keep your eye on.

We talked about this on the podcast tonight. I'm very interested to see what's meant by "nickel back". I don't see any reason that it can't be interpreted as McGowan plays safety on base defensive downs and moves to the slot to cover a receiver on nickel downs. That's unlikely to hurt his value at all.

Should be interesting to see how it shakes out this weekend. It's been pretty clear that the Bears really don't see McGowan as an every-down player. They apparently think he can handle a nickel coverage role, which would suggest that his range in coverage isn't a huge factor and he does nothing but rack up tackles when he does play, so run support shouldn't be an issue. Not sure what the problem is, other than maybe keeping him from injury.

Looks like I need to go into damage control mode, I have McGowan, K Phillips, Mikell and Doughty as my 4 Ss. Doughty now looks like the best bet to play week 1. I am SOL if one of the others doesnt start. What an awful feeling to have before the season starts.

I'm pretty sure that Lovie Smith said that McGowan was still the starter after the 49ers game. As bad as the Bears defense was in that game, McGowan still wound up with 5 solo tackles compared to just 1 for Payne.

I got offered Nate Clements for Bryant Johnson in my NFC only league...just might have to take it.

Still would have Anquan, Calvin and Galloway in the WR hopper.

Well, I sure hope you caught what is probably a mistake.

Danieal Manning never was the primary nickel back for the Chicago Bears. Ricky Manning Jr., was and he was just cut. This roto blurb is confusing the Mannings and that's confusing everything. The comedic irony is that Danieal Manning probably is the primary nickel back now. I have no idea why they're muddling Kevin Payne and Brandon McGowan in talks of the nickel back, who will be a corner, or in Danieal's case, a tweener. Nevertheless... I'm pretty sure that quote without a link was flawed. That's my take anyway.

eta: googled for more and wth, I have no idea what is going on here. It doesn't make sense but it is corroborated. I'm very doubtful that McGowan is going to be a nickel back, whatever that is.

Danieal Manning was expected to take over the nickel back duties this year. Mike Brown's return took away his starting spot at FS and Ricky Manning was no longer in the team's plans. They barely played Ricky Manning during the preseason, but they couldn't find anybody to take him in a trade so he was cut. I still think Danieal Manning could wind up back in that spot, but based on the comments he made, it sounds like he may be the one getting benched here not McGowan.

Not sure what makes you say he's on the bench. Mike Brown is the starting FS and had the night off last night. So, the Bears started McGowan at SS (his normal spot) and Payne started at FS. Thus, that would make you believe...McGowan is the starting SS and Payne was just filling in for Brown. So, not sure where you're getting the idea that Payne is the man and McGowan will be watching him.

Per KFFL:

Bears | McGowan demotedFri, 29 Aug 2008 01:55:26 -0700Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears SS Brandon McGowan has been demoted and is no longer the starting strong safety.Bears | Payne to start at strong safetyFri, 29 Aug 2008 01:51:00 -0700Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears have promoted SS Kevin Payne to starting strong safety.

Bears 1st team defense has been awful in the preseason. Kevin Payne is a really nice guy to grab that should be available on the wavier wire in almost all leagues at this point.

Also, according to the Chicago Tribune today, Danieal Manning started as the nickel DB and lined up at that spot for every snap he played in the first half.

I'd like to hear this from someone other than Brad Biggs, namely a Bears coach. McGowan has looked great in each game, and Payne has been pedestrian at best. Did anyone see him blow contain in this last Cleveland game, letting Jerome ####### Harrison score on a toss play? Pathetic. This is stupid.

Chicago Sun-Times
The team has already been back to the drawing board, making changes and at least considering others. Kevin Payne, who started in place of Brown, has been made the starting strong safety over Brandon McGowan.

''I'm just happy I got an opportunity to go out there and show what I can do,'' Payne said. ''Now I am just ready to go out and help the team. It's a blessing to be able to start.''

jene, or somebody, mentioned earlier that lovie had pushed to draft payne, so that's probably all it boils down to -- payne is lovie's guy.

I see Payne now has projections near to what McGowan's were. I watch alot of Bears games and really wasn't that impressed by McGowan. I heard the hype here but was disappoitned to hear he was going to be the man. Now its Payne whom I haven't seen that much at all, and when I have, it wasn't pretty. Whats the word on Payne if any? This is historically a pretty good IDP Position on the Bears isn't it?

That's right. Danieal has been playing nickel and was with the first team in the third preseason game. I thought McGowan has looked like a liability in coverage. Corey Graham or Zac Bowman make more sense at nickel over McGowan. Payne has rotated at SS, but McGowan started the third game and Payne was underwhelming in the last two, so I don't get it. Apparently Payne has shown something else in practice if everything coming out is to be believed. I've projected Payne based on that, but still think McGowan ends up playing more. Mike Brown will be the biggest producer at safety on the team until he gets hurt, then McGowan and Payne will probably both be playing with Danieal in the mix.

Anyone have any new news here? The Bears website has McGowan ahead. Is this a new decision, or an outdated website?
All indications last week were that Payne would play and McGowan would rotate in at times but be primarily a nickel defender. Anything is possible, but I think there's only a very small chance that McGowan gets 80% of the snaps or more this week.

Any further updates on this? This is vital for me, thanks.
Well I lost. Payne and Greenwodd killed me. I saw nothing of Payne last night except him getting excited when Briggs scored the TD. I saw a big missed tackle and not much of anything else. Brutal.

In a word: Payneful. You said it perfectly; his best play of the day was getting excited when Briggs swooped in front of him to take the pill to the house.

I only say McGowan during nickel and he was everywhere. His limited stats I think were almost all from the 4Q when they were primarily in nickel or dime. I might be wrong though....

Very possible they opened in 3 wr set...thus, nickle formation? Thus, McGowan gets start?

yeah, McGowan was out there on the first play but he didn't get mentioned in the starting lineups by NBC. They went with Payne and Mike Brown there.

I was reading through the Bears message boards about Payne and it was actually quite interesting. First, after you get through the griping fot the Bears because the let Chris Harris go, there were these opinions.

1. Payne was lost. Reasoning was much as what was posted above. Many of these folks were screaming for McGowan. After reading through many of these I got the impression that these folks were IDP owners and were only looking at the stat line.

2. The other side believed McGowan is putrid and he was the sole reason for Wayne's TD. They believed Payne, although did not put up great stats, had an intrical part of how poorly the Indy Pass O was. They claim this was Payne's first start and he will become more comfortable in the position. They were pleased that he wsn't out of position (as McGowan always is). Its hard to tell positioning of the DBs watching TV, but their points seemed valid.

I have room on my team and I am going to hold onto Payne for another couple of weeks. I will not be starting him (which means he will go off this week), but will monitor his progress. Cant deny how good the Bears D was Sunday night even with a hurt Manning. Maybe Payne will pan out.

OHHHH THE PAYNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
